Today on the Connections Episodes from Organize 365®, I'm talking to Corie Weathers, author of “Military Culture Shift”. Once Corie was married she and her husband desired to invest in marriages, in a private practice. That was until he decided to pursue being a chaplain in the Military. And so began a life long adventure of serving and PCS'ing with two boys. Corie is currently gearing up to PCS soon and vulnerably shared how she feels about it. Corie's strength is not in adjusting to change. As a therapist, Corie advises others to adjust their expectations and look for the things you are excited about in the new location. It's important to grieve the loss of your current lifestyle, feel it, process it, and then climb out of those feelings by looking for purpose in the new. And while it is a military family's choice to serve, she pointed out there are a lot of sacrifices and choices you forfeit. Corie is deeply committed to serving the military community. Military Culture Shift We talked about the culture shift among military families over the years. It used to be that 1 in 4 people knew someone serving and now it's 1 in 200 that know someone serving in the Military. Americans had a better understanding of the sacrifice service men and women and their families make, on a daily basis. The overall support system used to be greater. Because military families know the struggle of moving so often, when you arrived in your new location, you could count on the community to embrace you. The spouses acted as the backbone and placed on the back burner for their families. They volunteered so their active duty servicemember could focus on the mission. Honestly, the Military relies on the volunteers. It's volunteers who help the families settle in. Also as spouses, you need to get your family established, then you could explore work opportunities. But by that time it was almost time to move again. In the 80's the marketing had a fatherly figure kind of message as in you could count on the military to supply all your needs. That shifted to “we take care of our families so they can take care of themselves” kinda vibe. They were trying to break the dependency of families on them for every need. Families were starting to get used to 2 income households so they didn't have to rely on the military so much and because spouses wanted to work. Spouses face many challenges in relocating and often that second income is undependable. Where the spouse has a license or certification, in some cases they aren't recognized in other states or countries. We got into a deep discussion about possible solutions and whose job is it to develop and implement those solutions. Social media has filled some of the gaps but due to more spouses working, volunteerism went down and community decreased. Military Initiative Funding We also talked about how funding gets assigned to different buckets. And the appropriation process to make sure the money gets spent as intended. And what happens when money is supposed to be set aside but comes up short and then some programs don't actually get fully funded. It directly affects those that protect us. We talked a lot about the process. And that goes for every bill that becomes law, not just for the Department of Defense (DOD) initiatives. And when families fall on hard times due to programs not getting funded, now they no longer have that tight knit community to lean on. Corie's Challenge: “Who is going to be the people group that implements this thing that is so important to me?” We agreed that it's time for everyone to look at the issues with fresh eyes and come up with outside of the box ideas as solutions. As states are starting to have more control, it's time for us and private institutions to step up and provide actionable solutions for those who protect our freedom. Could you be part of the solution for an issue personal to you? EPISODE RESOURCES: Military Culture Shift by Corie Weathers Sign Up for the Organize 365® Newsletter Did you enjoy this episode? There were several ways I could have ended this series and many interviews I could have done, however, when Matt mentioned that I should end it with him interviewing me, it felt right. So... here I am. Here we are. We share my reflections on the project, where things go from here, and most importantly, the power of championing others- especially your spouse. Special thank you to SO MANY PEOPLE who have supported me throughout the years, too many to mention here. I hope you enjoyed the series and will share it with others. In the final chapter of Military Culture Shift, I reference a theory of reconstitution written by Stoney Portis, after he commanded the 3-61 CAV troops that survived the now historic Battle of COP Keating and needed to somehow become mission-ready again. Reading his reflection on what it took to wholistically serve the battle-weary troops who had earned every right to hang up the one tattered uniform they had left, I knew it was a case study on what it would take to reconstitute an entire culture as well. So I invited now LT COL Stoney Portis to join Matt and me in a discussion about their shared sacred space in hopes it could validate the sacred spaces in your own life, but also inspire the healing of us all. I will never forget the feeling that rushed over me when I heard about the Pineapple Express during August 2021. Scott Mann, a retired Lieutenant Colonel and former U.S. Army Green Beret joined with other veterans who resolved to fulfill their promises to the Aghan allies for protection. The efforts of Scott and other veterans through the Pineapple Express and other civilian-led efforts were nothing short of heroic. But their commitment to find and fund their own way back to Afghanistan illuminated a whole other level of integrity, leadership, and “What right looks like”. Against the backdrop of what Gen Milley has since called a “Strategic failure”, the Pineapple Express shook me and many others in the country awake, revealing the startling breakdown of the institution's hierarchy, a shift in the future of humanitarian aid, and the power of human kindness. I've been a military spouse for almost 15 years. And in that time, I've seen a lot of evolution in what it means to be a military spouse, what opportunities are available for military spouses, and how military spouses are viewed. In some ways, the change has been really good. And in some ways, the change is not all for the better. But my experience as a military spouse is just a drop in the bucket compared to the history of what it means to be a military spouse in the last 100 years. Today's conversation is definitely one you don't want to miss! I sit down with Corie Weathers to discuss her new book, Military Culture Shift: The Impact of War, Money, and Generational Perspective on Morale, Retention and Leadership. We discuss how military culture has shifted over the decades, what that means for military spouses, and what you and I can do to continue to shift the culture in a positive direction for the future. Shortly after I recorded the Spouse's Roundtable, Jessica- the millennial spouse whose husband Andrew served on the ground during the Afghanistan exit, reached out to me to say that Andrew was ready to share his story. Still serving, Andrew felt limited in what he could say as well as whether he was ready to share. None of us could forget the powerful images of the chaos at the Kabul airport in August 2021. It is seared into our minds, much like the stories from the fall of Saigon in 1975, and what many compared it to. Stories like these are nothing short of remarkable. Similar stories from Afghanistan, like the one you are about to hear, are still surfacing. They reveal the incredible training of our US and allied partners but also the wounding of moral and ethical decisions that are difficult to make sense of and challenging to heal from. Rather than being a voyeur as you listen, I hope these episodes invite you to think about how you might bring purpose from your own story and how they can inspire you to be a leader others want to follow. As our military valiantly scrambled to leave Kabul airport, the explosion at Abbey Gate killed 13 of our service members. All but one were Gen Z. For much of the older generation, war was all we knew but Gen Z had only been coming in for a few years, the oldest of them only four when 9/11 happened. Losing them this way, for this reason, at the end of our very long and painful chapter, yet at the beginning of theirs seemed even more wrong. With all this talk about Gen Z motivations and the recruiting crisis, I wondered about the Gen Z that entered the force before the end of those two decades of war. What motivated them to come in and how did the Afghanistan exit impact their very fresh perspectives on this career and lifestyle? I invited Aidan Gunderson, a Gen Z Marine deployed to Afghanistan during the withdrawal to share his deeply personal story of what happened at Abbey Gate as well as how it has affected his view of service. In 2023, Gallup reported that America's confidence in major institutions such as banking, education, religion, and government was historically the lowest it has ever been. Like a see-saw, trust has been declining for decades but there was always enough trust in the older or youngest generations to keep the see-saw somewhat balanced and institutions funded and functional. As confidence has steadily declined, some have said that the see-saw is finally tipping with more generations distrusting than ever. It isn't helping that Gen Z has been watching evidence of institutions mismanagement in real time online and in social media. With so much speculation around Gen Z, I wanted to bring on Matthew Weiss, a Marine Corps Intelligence officer, Gen Z, and author of the book “We Don't Want You Uncle Sam” to help us understand what Gen Z is really asking. Through the lens of his motivations for personal service, as well as connections to peers and his previous experience with a cutting-edge defense technology company, his book has sparked conversations on the highest levels. While the military culture is a subculture of America, the military spouse community is a subculture of the military. Similar to our military kids, these subcultures experience a unique perspective separate from what service members and government employees experience. While they are not employees and (mostly) aren't regulated by the institution, their relationship with the Department of Defense has a history of confusion, expectations, entanglement, and deeply personal experiences. It is unfortunately too easy to make their voice secondary, secondary to the mission, and secondary to our priorities and interests. And yet, we are told we are the backbone of force readiness. To skip over the spouse chapters in the book as well as this episode only enforces that narrative. So I'm inviting you to lean in. The best way to discuss the spouse chapters of the book was to bring in a multi-generational spouses roundtable with various experiences. Can an institution as large as our Department of Defense change? What is it about our relationship with the DOD that makes it difficult to ask for healthy accountability and transparency? As a Gen X, I wish I could say that it was my generation that was the Hero generation. However, Millennials swung away from independence and invited our multi-generational nation into a giant family meeting. With their signature question “why”, they have challenged us to talk about the many elephants in the room, making all of us a little (or a lot) uncomfortable. As conversations became public around diversity, mold in housing, and food insecurity many millennials found ways to advocate for government response. Shannon Razsadin, a millennial military spouse helped found Military Family Advisory Network, a non-profit that provides research on these topics. MFAN helped expose the model crisis in 2019 and are currently tackling food insecurity. I wanted to bring Shannon on the podcast to share more about her motivations before and during those years as well as her own first impressions of the military community when she came in. Millennials filled the lower ranks of the force while op-tempos reached exhausting levels and sequestration tainted the beginning of a second decade of war as it forced us to dangerously downsize. The “halo effect” left many Gen X and older Millennials, confused- trying to reconcile their positive expectations of the military with reality. Technology provided a megaphone to an eager and fearless generation that had a lot to say, and access to influential leaders who, they felt, needed to hear it. In Chapter 6, I shared the story of Amy, a millennial, a journalist for Military.com, and a military spouse who gave voice to the betrayal she and other families felt as service members were handed pink slips instead of promotions. Amy was just one of many examples of how Millennials aimed to bring about change. Amy later became an editor for Military.com and is known as one of the most competent voices on a lot of military issues, including understanding the Tricare system. I asked Amy to come on the podcast to share what she remembers from that decade, but also the shifts she saw in the culture as she covered it over the years. This podcast is based on the book Military Culture Shift by clinical consultant and SME on military family culture, Corie Weathers. This podcast offers leaders an opportunity to understand the growing shifts happening within the military culture as an immersive supplement to the book. Based on 15 years of research, counseling, and teaching the military culture across all branches. In the Army, there is an old saying that the commander is responsible for everything the unit does or fails to do. When morale begins to fail in the institution, the culture looks to the top. When the Afghanistan exit began to unravel, veterans and even some active duty looked to top military leadership, mainly the Joint Chiefs of the branches as well as the Chairman for responsibility and accountability. Some were even angry that stars were not put on the table in the name of protecting and serving the people in the fight. The more I dug into the frustration felt by those boots on the ground and leveraged curiosity for those carrying the weight of hard decisions at the top, the more messy accountability became. I found that most people, regardless of role, rank, or responsibility were genuinely doing the best they could in the circumstances they found themselves in. It turns out, the messy part is choosing to believe it. I knew it would be helpful to hear from one of those Joint Chiefs from that season, to not only get his lessons on leadership but more importantly, to share what it is really like to make tough decisions at the top that will impact an entire branch. So I invited retired General Norton Shwartz, or Norty as he likes to be called, and his wife Suzie to share some of their story. He became the 19th Joint Chief of Staff of the Air Force in 2008 after his predecessor was fired for misplacing nuclear weapons. They served in that role until 2012 as sequestration and exhaustion rippled throughout the military culture. Both Boomers, they have continued to invest in their community since then. The Defense Budget is not likely part of your dinner table conversations. Yet, the budget impacts the lives of everyday military families in the groceries they have access to, the condition of their housing, and of course their paycheck. I wanted to make the very confusing topic of Congress and Defense Budgets as simple as possible, so who better to invite than Heba Abdelaal, a Millennial military spouse, former congressional staffer, and incredible human to the podcast. Corie sits down with military historian Dr. Edward A. Gutiérrez who studied the Doughboys from WW1. Dr. Gutiérrez specifically researched how a sense of honor and duty were engrained in the everyday culture of Americans prior to WW1 propelling many of them to enlist in the war. In this talk, Dr Gutiérrez suggests that as a culture moves away from embracing suffering, and even war and death, we lose cohesiveness, our humanity, and resilience as a society. He also shares how key motivations of honor and duty represented something different than it does today. Dr. Edward A. Season 7 might be over, but we are bringing back the Top 10 most listened-to episodes in Lifegiver Podcast History! Episode 2, Season 4 What happens when a veteran, a military spouse, and a first responder spouse sit down and talk about life together? I often get asked, do we really have that much in common? Why would I have a podcast where I address the needs of both military and first responders? Because we have a whole lot more in common than you think. In this episode, I bring Ashley and Sarah on the podcast to talk about our different worlds and we would love for you to join us. Sarah is a first responder spouse, whose husband is now on the local SWAT team. She brings authenticity and humor that will brighten anyone's day. Ashley, calling in from Italy, is a veteran herself by has retired and is now a military spouse. For those who don't know, we call that a dual service family. She brings a perspective that all of use should pay attention to. Grab a cup of coffee or tea and pretend you are sitting at the table with us. You will definitely be changed by this conversation. Season 7 might be over, but we are bringing back the Top 10 most listened-to episodes in Lifegiver Podcast History! In this episode from Season 4, I'll talk about the results of a spouse survey I created that went viral. Almost 750 spouses told me how they are REALLY doing and it turns out... We have lots to talk about. I wasn't surprised that we are struggling as a community. Many of you aren't doing well and you aren't talking about it. In fact, many are burned out, exhausted, and borderline resentful. So in this episode, we are going to get honest about that. But there are some of you who are really doing great. So what is the difference? Take a listen to find out where you fall with other spouses in the community. Perhaps you need some encouragement from others who are figuring out how to balance it all or maybe you have a lot more to offer than you thought... It's time to breathe life into our family- the community family as well. Why I started the Hearts & Stripes podcast We underestimate the power of our influence My background as an entrepreneur in wedding and event planning & how skills used in planning a wedding can correlate to building a marriage Marriage is designed to bring out the good and bad so that you can acknowledge and address it, refining On the “other side” of marriage is the opportunity to love, leep over great hurdles and hope for something greater than we could ever be as individuals alone "Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope." - Maya Angelou Marriage is a team effort Communicate through prayer, communicate your needs and desires with your spouse using good timing and tact, communicate successes and use that to tackle the next thing Take responsibility for what you'd like to see in your marriage Brining your strengths to your marriage The importance of military marriage resources and the hope them to make them attainable and visible to the service couples who need them Having a career as a milspo and how your partner can help you protect your time and well-being to make you a better entrepreneur For more on Corie & Lifegiver head to: https://www.corieweathers.com https://www.life-giver.org Listen to our Heart Tracks II playlist on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6ymOG8ArepaBYgIqCe4vmi Military Marriage Day Summit info here at https://www.militarymarriageday.com Resource: Join us in the Hearts & Stripes Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/heartsstripes To get even more on Hearts & Stripes podcast, resources, coaching and more head to https://www.breecarroll.com Connects with us on IG https://www.instagram.com/itsbreecarroll/ Connect with us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/itsbreecarroll

This week on Strength in Numbers, your host COL (R) Tim Nye and Neal Keohane talk with Corie Weathers, author of the book Sacred Spaces.Corie is not only the author of Sacred Spaces, she a licensed professional counselor who focuses on military and first responder marriages, and is the 2015 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year. She has a podcast as well, Lifegiver, that helps military and first responder families deal with the stressors of service life with a special focus on maintaining strong marriages. As I mentioned in our brief call, she also traveled with Ash Carter when he was Secretary of Defense to Iraq, Turkey, etc. and she wrote about this experience and how it changed her perspective in her book. The Strength in Numbers podcast is the brainchild of Neal Keohane. At the very beginning of COVID, which seemed terrifying (and still is…), he wanted to provide a resource for folks to use. We went through several iterations and after discussion, we concluded that tactical resource needs were being met but what we need more of was inspiration. Thus, Strength is focused on “together, we can overcome anything” and people who demonstrate “grit, determination, and perseverance.”Produced by B. Gospel Scripture: (all NIV) Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:24 “and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:25 (a) “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.” Hebrews 9:22 (b) “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Luke 15:10 says “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Ephesians 1:13–14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Ok- so first a heads up- we are going there in this episode. We will be talking all about the female anatomy! Guys- this one is for you, too. I could not be more excited to share my good friend, Brittany Boccher with you. She was the 2017 AFI Military Spouse of the Year and has been traveling the country investing in military spouse by helping them define their identity and purpose. Originally, Brittany defined her purpose by advocating for special needs families as she has a son with multiple medical issues. However, she soon found that a bigger issue is plaguing our community- a lack of identity. Brittany continues to advocate for EFMP families, but her passion for helping spouses reclaim who they are and find new purpose has resulted in her partnering with the USO to create a workshop and workbook titled Discovering Your Spark. After the results from my latest survey came back showing the same issue, I knew I had to have Brittany on to talk about not only what she was finding as she sits down with spouses face to face, but also what she has discovered herself is a way to find our way back to ourselves again. It's time for the very first Lifegiver Sunday Special. I received feedback that some of you would like faith based content AND hearing from Matt- so this episode is the both of us giving a talk at our old stomping grounds where we first met- Gardner-Webb University. The sound on this one is a bit different because it was recorded in a different place and format, but I hope the message comes through in a way that will encourage your story. Welcome to the season four premiere of the Lifegiver podcast! I've returned from my winter sabbatical with new vision for this year and that includes great plans for season 4. When it all comes down to it, it's all about YOU. In this first episode, I'll briefly share about my plans to make the podcast far more interactive in 2019 as well as talking about the results of a spouse survey I created that went viral. Almost 750 spouses told me how they are REALLY doing and it turns out... We have lots to talk about. I wasn't surprised that we are struggling as a community. Many of you aren't doing well and you aren't talking about it. In fact, many are burned out, exhausted, and borderline resentful. So in this episode we are going to get honest about that. But there are some of you who are really doing great. So what is the difference? Take a listen to find out where you fall with other spouses in the community. Perhaps you need some encouragement who are figuring out how to balance it all or maybe you have a lot more to offer than you thought... It's time to breathe life into our family- the community family as well. Corie Weathers, author of Sacred Spaces, My Journey to the Heart of Military Marriage, transparently shares some of her own marriage struggles as a the wife of a military chaplain in this far reaching conversation. Corie was the 2015 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year. One of her responsibilities was to travel on a one-week overseas holiday trip with US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter. Corie’s personal goal for this trip was twofold: to better understand her husband’s deployment experiences and to bring other military spouses along through her daily video podcast and eventually her book. Sacred Spaces. Every military spouse will better understand their own challenges and struggles as Corie doesn’t hold back in taking listeners into the heart of her own marriage. She poignantly describes intimate, sacred moments where her understanding of how she realized that when she said goodbye to her husband when he was deployed to Afghanistan, she was actually saying goodbye to life as she knew it. Her husband would leave part of his heart in Afghanistan. Corie doesn’t leave listeners without hope or a path forward. This conversation is not just for military families. Every married couple will benefit from this strong message of help and hope. Corie Weathers, author of Sacred Spaces, My Journey to the Heart of Military Marriage is also a licensed professional counselor and hosts the Lifegiver Military Spouse Podcast. In 2015, Corie Weathers was named Military Spouse of the Year. That was in large part because of how her husband, Chaplain Matthew Weathers, nominated and championed her. But as we all know, championing your spouse is much easier when you feel championed. In honor of Military Appreciation Month, we wanted to honor and learn from the marriage of a military family who is also in the trenches serving other military families and first responders. In this episode, Chaplain Matthew and Corie Weathers take us behind their own picture frame and teach us how they connect personally as a military family. Even more, they share with us incredibly powerful insights and tools they use to help military and first responder families thrive. The nuggets harvested from this episode are gold. Here are a few of them: How to praise your spouse The power in seeing your spouse as a bonsai tree How to find purpose together in your marriage, especially for families with traveling spouses How much is too much to share with your spouse, especially in relation to deployment or where trauma is involved What it means to have sacred spaces in marriage and how not to miss them The feeling wheel on their refrigerator The healthy competition that keeps Team Weathers thriving. Discuss these questions and more with our 2015 AFI MSOY, Corie Weathers, as we dive deep into the sacred space of military marriage.
Secretary of Defense Ash Carter travelled to the Middle East to visit with Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines and thank them for their service while deployed during the holiday season...And our 2015 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year, Corie Weathers, went with him! We are in the middle of our Sacred Spaces Series on the Lifegiver Podcast and today's interview is a special one. Those of you who have read Sacred Spaces will remember Amanda Marr as the Gold Star Widow I have the honor of serving back in 2009. One of my most Sacred Spaces from that deployment, Amanda joins me on the podcast to have an honest discussion on what it was like to receive notification of her soldier's death, how she took care of herself, and her process to where she is now. This is an inspiring podcast for any listener. Amanda shares her honest thoughts on what makes a Care Team successful as well as tips she has learned about marriage now that she is remarried to an Army soldier. You will be empowered, encouraged, and gain new perspective on your own marriage.
