Fetus John the Baptist knew exactly who Jesus was, according to Luke. Adult John the Baptist sends emissaries to ask Jesus who he is. Jesus does not answer John's question, but rather instructs the question-askers to simply report what they see and what they hear. It seems that, according to Jesus, his identity must be shown, enacted, embodied for it to be real. Similarly, our Anabaptist faith has a centuries-long history of being done, enacted, embodied. Our faith is a lived faith and has traditionally been proclaimed more in deed than in word. This is why the decision of our denomination to be the named plaintiff in a lawsuit against the Dept. of Homeland Security (Mennonite Church USA et al. v. United States Department of Homeland Security et al.) is completely in line with our 500-year history of following Jesus. Because our faith IS caring for our neighbor. So when the U.S. Government tries to prevent us from doing that, the free exercise of our religion is compromised and we must resist.Sermon begins at minute marker 6:18Luke 7:18-35ResourcesBibleWorm podcast: Episode 626 – Are You Really the One?, Amy Robertson and Robert Williamson, JrIris de León-Hartshorn, “Our Anabaptist Witness as Mennonites,” (theological basis for legal action taken by Mennonite Church USA - see link below) February 12, 2025.“MC USA and more than two dozen Christian and Jewish denominations and associations sue to protect religious freedoms,” February 11, 2025.Mary H. Der Karfreitagsgottesdienst mit Abendmahl wird live aus der evangelisch-reformierten Kirche Wil in Dübendorf ZH übertragen.
In this episode William speaks with SCM member Jack Woodruff about his experiences with the Iona Community volunteering at Iona Abbey and volunteering with the Northern leg of the Pilgrim Cross. They discuss themes of ecumenism, pilgrimage, and spiritual practice in relation to Christian community. Find out more about Iona here. Find out more about Pilgrim Cross here. Every 2 minutes, someone in the world is diagnosed with leprosy - if they don't get treatment, the results are devastating - paralysis, nerve damage and loss of limbs eventually mean that someone with leprosy becomes unable to work. This is a disease of poverty - thriving where there is malnutrition and poor sanitation, in communities where there is no support for those unable to support themselves. MICHAEL HARDIE is the newly-appointed Community Partnership Manager for The Leprosy Mission, and during his recent visit to the Island he shared not only details of the current Leprosy Mission project to support the tea pickers of Bangladesh - where leprosy is rife - but also explained how his childhood experiences have uniquely prepared him for this work. LISTEN TO THE PROGRAMME NEXT WEEK as Michael returns to tell his Dad's conversion story, and how he found faith for himself. Author and Broadcaster RICHARD LITTLEDALE returns with - appropriately - another box of breakfast cereal, and there's music from the Iona Community and from Jimmy Owens - plus our notice board Notice board news can be emailed - judithley@manxradio.com Find out more about the Leprosy Mission at www.leprosymission.org.uk

Why are so many young people - from primary school age children to late teenagers - keen to join church and cathedral choirs? What is the important anniversary being marked later this week in Malew? When you want to buy something a little different for a special friend or relative, where do you look? And which of his 50 nativity sets has Richard Littledale brought with him today?? On today's programme I'll offer some possible answers! The Broughton Boys Choir with their Musical Director John Caterall will be there to help me - and there'll be music too - from the choir, and from the Iona Community. Plus there's a well-stocked notice board - lots of opportunities to get into the real spirit of the season ... Items for the notice board can be emailed to me - judithley@manx.net

Roy Jenkins and guests explore how attitudes to nuclear weapons have changed since the end of the Cold War. It's more than thirty years since the prospect of nuclear conflict cast a shadow over world peace; prompting massive demonstrations and feeding fierce debate. When the Cold War ended we all moved on, and largely forgot the cloud which had once loomed so threateningly. Until the first week of the Ukraine invasion, when Vladimir Putin openly placed his strategic nuclear weapons forces on high alert and assumptions about peace in Europe were rocked. The panel discuss whether nuclear weapons make the world a safer place, whether a deterrent actually deters, and with committed Christians on both sides of the debate, how do they square their different positions with their faith? Joining the panel is Ruth Harvey, Leader of the Iona Community, an intentional Christian community working for justice and peace. She has a background in church ministry and as a mediator with Place for Hope, a charity working in mediation with faith-based organisations. Major General Tim Cross is a retired army officer. He served in the first Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan, and has been an adviser to the House of Commons Defence Select Committee. Jane Harries is Peace Education Coordinator at the Welsh Centre for International Affairs. She's a Quaker and a key figure in Cymdeithas y Cymod, the Fellowship of Reconciliation. Martyn Gough is National Chaplain to the Royal British Legion. He was previously Archdeacon for the Royal Navy and Chaplain of the Fleet.

Pastor Sara Olson-Smith preaches on the last days of loved ones. When our loved ones are dying, our whole world shrinks to focus on them, they are the center of our attention, the here and the now is what matters. Because the time we once thought of as endless now has a finish line, a finite end. When we come face to face with death, we come to know that we do not have forever so we may experience more joy, more generosity because these moments are so utterly precious. For some, Advent is a time of grief and loss. Today's guest is John Bell – hymnwriter, author, and broadcaster and a guiding light from the Iona Community as he has for decades created resources for the global church in music, worship and spirituality, including his recent book Living with the Psalms. In this conversation we talk about how the Psalms – much like the incarnation we celebrate in this season – speak of God's solidarity with us in our vulnerability, how the Psalms give us permission to express doubt and anger when we come face to face with suffering and injustice, how sacred songs have the power to heal and tend to the brokenhearted, and how the Psalms offer us the precious image of God as midwife – delivering us through the pains of life and death. There is some sensitive content in this episode, so please be aware of that as you listen, and make sure you have the support you need in case any of the subjects are difficult to hear about, particularly regarding the tragic loss of infants and young children. https://kiranyoungwimberly.com/2021/12/16/psalms-for-the-spirit-ep-17-delivering-us-through-the-pains-of-life-and-death-with-john-bell/ (More on this episode)

Peter W. Marty preaches from the book of Romans from the Apostle Paul. In Christ Jesus, we get to trust that all will be right in the center of life, even when all feels wrong. It's all right. Behind this phrase are the murmurings of grace. All people sin and fall short of the glory of God, no exceptions, but through the righteousness of God, God brings us a gift through Jesus Christ. Everything is going to be all right in the life of Christ. A Mighty FortressText: Martin Luther, 1483–1546; tr. Lutheran Book of Worship. Music: Martin Luther, 1483–1546. Stephen Wright works as a spiritual director and trustee for the Sacred Space Foundation (SSF). Before this, he had a long and distinguished nursing career in the National Health Service and academia, the Royal College of Nursing, and as a consultant to the WHO. He gathered a few glittering prizes along the way. Then his personal and professional life took an about-turn over 35 years ago through a series of life-changing spiritual experiences. Consequently, he developed an interest in spiritual matters and the connection with wellbeing, and cofounded the SSF, to support those in spiritual crisis. He was made an Honorary Fellow of the University of Cumbria in 2013 for his work connecting spirituality and health. Three books explore the nature of healing relationships: Therapeutic Touch: Theory and Practice; Sacred Space: Right Relationship and Spirituality in Healthcare; and Reflections on Spirituality and Health. Coming Home: Notes for the Journey is a personal and scholarly account of spiritual awakening and support. Stephen has received significant development in spirituality and spiritual direction in the presence of several renowned spiritual teachers, most especially his mentor Ram Dass, at the Interfaith Seminary, and in the depth of his relationship with his fellow trustee and SSF cofounder Jean Sayre-Adams. He works with individuals seeking spiritual guidance and organizations developing the practice of healing, spiritual care, conflict resolution, staff support, compassion, and leadership. He is a supporter of and an activist in several environmental movements. As an ordained interfaith minister, he brings a rich experience of spiritual practice from many faiths to his work, as well as being a member of the Iona Community. He is a trustee of TheWEL, a charity based in Scotland offering groundbreaking approaches to wellbeing. With the support of the Diocese of Carlisle (in 2021 he was made a member of the Synod), Stephen established the St. Kentigern School for Contemplatives in 2018. His other recently published works include Burnout: a spiritual crisis: from stress to transformation; Contemplation: words and silence for the Way Home; The Kentigern Way: A life and Lakeland pilgrimage; A Grasmere pilgrimage; and collections of poetry and chant: Song and Dance for the Way Home; Beloved; and Yours, Faithfully. Heartfullness: The Way of Contemplation: 12 steps to freedom, awakening and the Beloved completes a quartet of related books on spiritual awakening and is a deep, experiential ‘course' in liberation from addiction to the ego-self, opening to the way of contemplation, and becoming receptive to the Beloved and a path of service. He lives with his partner in the English Lake District, deepening service and spiritual practice, participating in his local church community, taking care of his organic garden, and enjoying grandfatherhood. Discussion of this interview in the BatGap Community Facebook Group. Interview recorded October 16, 2021. Video and audio below. Audio also available as a Podcast.
