When Zimbabwe's dynamic roots band Mokoomba had a chance meeting with a house music producer and an American kamelengoni (Malian pentatonic harp) player, the sparks flew. A few weeks later, they all gathered for two days to write and record a song aimed at the lucrative Afro-House, DJ remix market. In this Zimbabwe-focused episode, we hear new mbira music from Mary Anibal and Othnell Mangoma Moyo, and go inside the creation of a future Mokoomba dancefloor sensation. Produced by Banning Eyre.

A vast expanse of musical ground is covered on the latest @weheardwonders podcast. Hey, it's what we do! We move from the sunlit Zimrock of Mokoomba to the mysterious medieval hijinks and levitating bananas of Immaterial Possession; from the latest inspired team-up (this time with El Michels Affair) of hip-hop firebrand Black Thought to producer-extraordinaire James Ellis Ford's idiosyncratic lurch centre-stage, and the warmly soothing and quietly profound Appalachian trance of Powers / Pulice / Rolin. Andrew discusses his Great Vinyl Migration, Iain freestyles about freestyle, and something swampy and funky has the Vinyl Word.

You’ll hear Alsarah and the Nubatones, inspired by the rich cultures of Nubia, Jojo Abot’s arty, dancehall-meets-Afrobeat grooves, Bombino’s joyous Tuareg rock, and the discovery of the night for many Afropop fans: Mokoomba from Zimbabwe, featuring phenomenal lead singer Mathias Muzaza, who spanned nods to Salif Keita, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, as well as a Congolese soukous animation that had the crowd up and dancing. Special bonus: a taste of the acoustic “traditional” set Mokoomba performed the next day up the Hudson. Produced by Sean Barlow.
