GRAMMY-winning producer, artist, and songwriter Charlie Peacock defies categorization. Paul chats with him about everything from his early days on the Norther California jazz scene, to writing hits for the Christian music world, to producing everyone from the Civil Wars to Switchfoot. PART ONE:Scott and Paul talk about aging, the Rolling Stones concert Scott just saw, the centrality of energetic drummers, and other fun stuff. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Charlie PeacockABOUT CHARLIE PEACOCKFrom jazz to pop to rock to country, gospel, and Americana, Charlie Peacock is a Grammy-winning producer, artist, and songwriter who defies categorization. In addition to his own wide-ranging work as a recording artist, he has written well-known songs such “Every Heartbeat,” which was a major pop hit for Amy Grant, and “In the Light,” which is best known for the version recorded by DC Talk. He's responsible for developing and producing the Grammy Award-winning duo The Civil Wars and the Modern Rock band Switchfoot, including their multi-platinum Top 40 pop hit “Dare You to Move.” Peacock launched his career as an artist on the Northern California jazz scene before recording his debut album, Lie Down in the Grass, which was released by A&M Records in the mid-1980s. After a stint with Island Records, he moved to Nashville to work as an artist and producer. His 1990 album, The Secret of Time, earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rock/Contemporary Gospel Album. In that decade, he produced nearly 50 albums for other artists, and was named the Gospel Music Association's Producer of the Year for three consecutive years. The long list of artists he has produced includes Nicole Nordeman, David Crowder, Holly Williams, The Lone Bellow, Al Green, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He has produced a wide range of music for film and television, including the Mandy Moore film A Walk To Remember, Chris Cornell's "Misery Chain" from the soundtrack of Twelve Years a Slave, and "Hush," the title theme to the AMC drama Turn: Washington's Spies, featuring Joy Williams and Matt Berninger of The National. As an artist, he returned to jazz with the Love Press Ex-Curio album in 2005 before embracing vocal music once again with his 2012 album No Man's Land. In late 2015, Peacock was appointed the Director of Contemporary Music and Industry Outreach at Lipscomb University's College of Arts and Entertainment in Nashville. An author of several books, his forthcoming memoir will explore his musical life, while his latest album as an artist, Every Kind of Uh-Oh, will be released at the end of August.

On this episode of Tent Show Radio, enjoy a thrilling hour of music from South Africa's Five Time Grammy Award winning singing group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Called South Africa's Cultural Ambassadors to the World by Nelson Mandela, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, was founded in the early 1960s by Joseph Shabalala, then a teenage Zulu farm boy living on the lands just outside the small town of Ladysmith. In 1970, a radio broadcast of one of their concerts opened the door to their first record contract. Singing a traditional style called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-Ya), developed in the mines of South Africa, they collaborated with Paul Simon, incorporating their rich harmonies into the Graceland album (1986) – a landmark recording considered seminal in introducing World Music to mainstream audiences. The group would go on to record with Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Sarah McLachlan, Josh Groban, Emmylou Harris and many others. They provided music for many movies, have appeared on Broadway and were even the subjects of a documentary film, On Tip Toe: The Story of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, which was nominated for an Academy Award. Their historic recording career includes over seventy albums, earning nineteen Grammy Award nominations and five Grammy Award wins, more than any other World Music group. They earned Grammys for their albums: Shaka Zulu (1988), Raise Your Spirit Higher (2004), Ilembe (2009), Singing For Peace Around the World (2013) and most recently Shaka Zulu Revisited: 30 Year Anniversary Celebration (2017). On today's episode of Travel Notes, we are featuring a musical group that had humble beginnings on a farm in South Africa some 63 years ago. Today, they are living legends whose music has played a pivotal role during the apartheid in South Africa. Nelson Mandela listened to their music while he was imprisoned during the apartheid citing their music carried a powerful message of peace. Today's featured guest is the legendary group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo We dive into their origin story, the style of music they sing, their new 2023 album ‘Soothe My Soul: Songs From Our South African Church' and revisit some of their most memorable moments throughout their incredible six decade long career. They've won more grammys than any other world music group in recorded music history - and today I'm honored to have Albert Mazibuko who is celebrating his 55th year as a member of Ladysmith Black Mambazo on the show.

Notes: Rain is not always the easiest weather for me to delight in... seems to come with dark days and wet, slippery footing -- I often get a little cranky in response! I love the delight in the rain this song evokes -- reminds me of how crucial water is, what a gift to have it falling fresh from the sky. The original melody reminds me of the whoosh of rain, and as we sing "Rain falling down on the plains," the melody falls, too. Then in the response melody, I put the plink of the rain drops on the rooftops -- so the whole song is an onomatopoetic celebration of rain that enchants me out of crankiness into delight. Songwriter Info: I got to record this one live with my daughter and dear friend, Rebecca, which affirmed for me the magic of singing with someone you love. Just as relationships of love grow and shift and change, some songs seem to grow organically, shifting shape and adapting to their circumstances. I always want to respect and hear the intent of the composer, and there are times when a song adapts in relationship to the singer. When sharing songs that have grown or changed, or songs of unknown provenance, I think it's really important to name what we do know, what we guess, what we've changed (after requesting permission if there's a living composer), and welcome learning more. So: I learned the melody of this song from Micky Hickey, who offers a beautiful set of pocket songs on Instagram. (See the links below.) She learned it from Bennett Konesni, a songsharer in Maine. It has definite echoes, and maybe even quotes from the Joseph Shabalala song, Rain, Rain, Beautiful Rain, that Ladysmith Black Mambazo released in 1987, but it's not exactly that song. I added the response melody… so what we're singing today is a song of accretion and adaptation. Maybe you will add to it or adapt it as it enters your life? And if you have more information about the origin of the song, I would love to hear! Sharing Info: Free to share, but please credit the full history as we know it. Welcome to Season 6! Shades and Layers is here with a brand new season, featuring fashion and textile designers, as well as other black women crafters and makers shaping culture across the world. In between there will be episodes from beauty, hair and personal care entrepreneurs. The first guest for the season is South Africa's quintessential multi-hyphenate, Maria McCloy. She and I are former business partners and our friendship dates way back to university days. In this conversation, we discuss her path to being a designer of iconic African-influenced fashion essentials in her hometown, Johannesburg. How she juggles fashion with being a sought after entertainment industry publicist and filling dance floors with her choice of vintage and modern African tunes when she deejays. We discuss many culture related topics like wax print being synonymous with African fashion, cultural appropriation, infrastructure limitations and opportunities, and the many other dynamics that influence the trajectory of the cultural industries of the African continent. It's a conversation of the ages and not to be missed. MENTIONS AND LINKS IN THIS EPISODEBlack Rage Productions - co-founded by Dzino, Maria McCloy and Kutloano Skosana in the late 90s, they documented South Africa's urban culture through television shows, an online magazine and through the independent record label, Outrageous Records. Welcome to Roadcase!! We're delighted to have the artist Anjimile on the show this week. Anjimile's latest album, Giver Taker, confronts their difficult journey as a trans person as well as their struggle with addiction to alcohol with honesty and conviction. Anjimile grew up outside Dallas, and spent several years studying in Boston and escaping what they felt was a suffocating environment in Texas. Now sober after a long stint in several rehab facilities, Anjimile has also faced head-on their gender identity road with courage, honesty and introspection. As reflected in their gorgeous and strikingly blunt lyrics, the journey was not an easy one but one that has been an inspiring touchstone for the many fans they have gained in their young career. So hop on the Roadcase bus for this inspiring story of perseverance and personal strength with Anjimile. It's gonna be a great ride!! Hello everyone and welcome to Speaking of the Arts. Our guest today is Katherine McVicker. In 2014, Katherine founded the boutique agency, Music Works International https://www.musicworksinternational.com/ , after three decades as an agent developing the touring careers of dozens of artists such as Brad Mehldau, Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and many others. In 2000, she launched the European touring career of Norah Jones and spent seven years developing Jones' profile internationally. Most recently, Katherine published the online course “Anyone can book a gig,”https://musicworksintl.thinkific.com/courses/anyone-can-book-a-gig which breaks down the core components of what goes into booking shows for independent artists. I recently spoke to Katherine about the course and wanted to share our conversation with everyone so they can learn more about this and where to find it. Independent musicians will find this episode particularly useful.

The great South African a cappella choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo are a global phenomenon. With their uplifting vocal harmonies and signature dance moves, they've been anointed “cultural ambassadors to the world” by no less than Nelson Mandela. (Some listeners might recall them appearing on Paul Simon's Graceland album back in 1986.) The group was formed in 1960 by Joseph Shabalala, has recorded more than 50 albums, and won five Grammys. Joseph Shabalala retired from the group in 2014, and died in February of 2020, but his sons and other family members carry on the tradition. During their 2018 world tour, Ladysmith Black Mambazo returned to perform songs in our studio. (From the Archives, 2018.)
Ladysmith Black Mambazo ('Wonke amehlo azokumbona'), Mahotella Queens ('Kazet'), Tumi & The Volume ('Limpopo'), Marcus Wyatt ('Prayer for Nkosi part. 2'), Hugh Masekela ('Molumpelo'), Abdullah Ibrahim ('Abide', 'Dreamtime'), Miriam Makeba ('African sunset', 'Thulasizwe'/'I shall be released' -con Nina Simone-), Zoë Modiga ('Kwasukasukela', 'Lengoma'), Nibs Van der Spuy ('Shaded in blue') y Zim Ngqawana ('Ebhofolo'). He's the first current male professional footballer to do so, which shows you how unusual it is. So, is it harder to be yourself in the men's game compared to the women's? With us on Woman's Hour is the footballer Lianne Sanderson who's won 50 international caps for England and was the first professional female player to come out 12 years ago, and Dr Rachael Bullingham, who's a senior lecturer at the University of Gloucestershire and specialises in homophobia in women's sport. We speak to the BBC's Sarah Rainsford who's covering the war in Ukraine about the Wives of Azov. Their husbands are part of the Azov Regiment who are seen as heroes in Ukraine because they've been defending Mariupol, but they've been trapped for more than two months in a steel works. Overnight some of them managed to get out of there. Paula McGowan's autistic son died when because he was given anti-psychotic drugs, despite warnings from him and his family. His death was described as ‘avoidable'. Paula is now on the brink of achieving her goal which is that all health and social care staff must, by law, undergo mandatory training in autism and learning disability awareness. We speak to Paula, as well as Alexis Quinn, who's been involved in piloting the training.

Paul Simon was in a slump in the early 80's. His relationship with Art Garfunkel was at a low point, he was recently divorced from his second wife, Carrie Fisher, and his 1983 album “Hearts and Bones” was considered a commercial failure. This album would change his fortunes. Graceland would become his highest charting album in over a decade, his most successful studio album, and would win the 1987 Grammy for Album of the Year. Simon lived next door to Lorne Michaels, creator of Saturday Night Live. Michaels introduced Simon to a singer-songwriter names Heidi Berg, and Simon agreed to produce a record for her. Berg wanted a sound like the street music from Johannesburg, South Africa, and loaned Simon a bootleg tape. This inspired Simon to travel to South Africa, meet the musicians, and create an album using these musicians and their native sounds. Obviously, this fractured the relationship between Simon and Berg. The album would also be controversial, because South Africa was under a cultural boycott at the time due to their apartheid policy. Simon would counter that he was lifting up the music of the indigenous South Africans, even paying three times New York union wages and giving writing credits, but this would not quell the criticism.Nevertheless, the album would do well both commercially and critically, and introduce American mainstream audiences to world music. GracelandThe title track was named "Graceland" because the drums reminded him of a traveling rhythm you would hear in a song from Sun Records. The lyrics reflect taking a road trip to Graceland from Louisiana on Route 61. Some also consider it a song about using a road trip to get over the pain of divorce.Diamonds on the Soles of Her ShoesThis song features the South African choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Simon wrote it when he went to South Africa but it was not originally planned for inclusion on Graceland. That changed when Ladysmith Black Mambazo and several other South African studio musicians were in New York for an episode of Saturday Night Live, and they decided to record it while they were in town.Under African SkiesThis deeper track references two people in the song one is Joseph Shabalala, the leader of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The other is Linda Ronstadt who lends her vocals to this track. Ronstadt's inclusion in the album was particularly controversial because she had performed at Sun City, a South African apartheid resort, three years earlier. You Can Call Me AlThe hit single from the album only went to number 23 on the charts. The names came from a party that Simon attended years prior with his first wife Peggy Harper. French Composer Pierre Boulez, who attended the same party, mistakenly referred to Paul and Peggy as Al and Betty. Many will remember the video starring Simon and Chevy Chase. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Somewhere Out There by James Ingram and Linda Ronstadt (from the animated film "An American Tail")This animated motion picture told the story of a family of Jewish mice and their immigration to the United States. STAFF PICKS:Goin' Crazy! by David Lee RothWayne leads off the staff picks with former Van Halen frontman, Diamond Dave. This is his third single from his first full studio solo album "Eat 'em and Smile." Steve Vai played guitar on this track. The song was supposed to be the title song from a proposed comedy television production starring Roth entitled "Crazy From the Heat" Human by The Human LeagueBrian brings us one of the most beautiful cheating songs you will hear. The Human League went to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis in Minneapolis to produce the album. It was a divisive decision, because the two women in the group did not accompany the other members when this song was recorded in Minneapolis.Emotion In Motion by Ric OcasekRob's staff pick by the former Cars front man reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. This is off his second solo studio album, and was his only single to hit the top 40 as a solo artist. Ric Ocasek died in 2019.Word Up! by CameoBruce finishes off the staff picks with the highest charting single from funk band Cameo - it hit number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Word Up" was an affirmation used in New York. Larry Blackmon is the lead singer, and was inspired to use the distinctive vocal monotone you hear in this song by listening to Sly Stallone. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Launch by BostonBoston's long anticipated third album "Third Stage" was released this month, and contained this instrumental lead-in to "Cool the Engines."
Maggie speaks with Grammy-winning author Ashley Kahn about his latest book, "George Harrison on George Harrison" a collection of interviews and TV appearances Harrison gave during his too-short life. Kahn's collection “covers [Harrison's] biographical sweep as fully as an autobiography would,” the preface asserts, and though one might argue with that, by book's end, we believe Kahn's exhortation: “Read his words, and know the man.”Ashley has received widespread critical acclaim for A Love Supreme: The Making of John Coltrane's Signature Album and Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece. His other books include The House That Trane Built and, as cowriter, The Universal Tone, Carlos Santana's autobiography. He teaches at New York University, and his articles have appeared in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, and other publications.Ashley Kahn is an author, educator, music journalist, and concert producer. A professor of music history and criticism at NYU who lectures at other institutions as well, his books include the A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album, Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece. Kahn's writing has generated two Grammy nominations, three ASCAP/Deems Taylor Awards, and two Book of the Year distinctions from the Jazz Journalists Association. Most recently, he has spoken, presented, and conducted interviews at a variety of festivals and conferences including: SXSW, CMJ, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Umbria Jazz Festival (Perugia and Orvieto), North Sea Jazz Festival (Rotterdam), the Detroit Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Barcelona Jazz Festival, Berklee School of Music, and other universities, music conferences and festivals.Kahn's byline appears in such publications as Rolling Stone, Mojo and The Wall Street Journal and his voice is often heard on National Public Radio's “Morning Edition”. During a thirty-year career in the music business, Kahn has helped produce countless concerts, tours and festivals including a ten-year stint as tour manager for a multitude of music groups, including: Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Debbie Harry & the Jazz Passengers and Britney Spears. He continues to work very closely with the Miles Davis family on a variety of projects, including a Miles Davis museum exhibition, tribute concerts and various panels and speaking engagements.“Despite all the pressures of fame, George Harrison managed to stay grounded, and real, and to live a life in full. In George Harrison on George Harrison, Ashley Kahn has summoned up a portrait of the artist as public figure, as friend, as husband, as spiritual devotee, through a kaleidoscopic assemblage of letters, interviews, broadcast transcripts, and more. Harri-son was thoughtful, sensitive, honest, warmly funny, kind, and very, very smart. It all shines through in this beautiful collection.” —Tom Piazza, Author of Why New Orleans MattersSource: https://www.amazon.com/George-Harrison-Interviews-Encounters-Musicians/dp/1641600519Source: https://tisch.nyu.edu/about/directory/clive-davis-institute/1417614318This episode is from an archive from the KPFK program Profiles adapted for podcast.
