We all struggle. Read that again…We all struggle.  Everybody is going through something in their life and everyone has a story to tell. It can be easy to feel like we are the only ones feeling the way we do. The next thing we know, those feelings have turned into reality because we tell ourselves there is nowhere to turn.  In those moments, it is important to remember that help is just a phone call away. On the other side of that experience, it's equally as important to be the person on the other side of the phone who can listen and remind your loved one who's struggling that everything will be okay.  We had an amazing chat with Kat Zempolich on this week's episode of Warriors Unmasked! If you haven't heard of her, she's the Co-Founder, Board Member, Co-Host of The Mental Matchup, and Director for Morgan's Message. After Morgan suddenly passed, Kat embarked on a heroic mission, sharing “Morgan's Message” and is now helping young people win their mental health battles.  Trust us, this conversation was filled with so much wisdom and insight. Kat shared her thoughts on why some people struggle to reach out for support and what we can do to overcome those barriers. We also delved into the topic of college athletics and mental health. With the pressures and demands placed on college athletes, it's no secret that this can take a toll on their mental well-being. Kat shared her experiences and offered practical advice for anyone navigating these challenges. This episode is packed full of good reminders we can all return to when times get tough. In this episode, we are focusing on mental health on our campus and beyond. May is Mental Health Awareness month, and given alarming mental health trends, this issue is a year-round priority for our community. Overcoming the stigma of mental health challenges is an important first step, so people can get support and treatment.  One way to overcome this stigma is for students to talk with each other about mental health, peer-to-peer —  evidence shows this can help significantly to overcome barriers and address mental health challenges. Naz senior Amanda Foster worked hard to bring the nonprofit organization, Morgan's Message, to Nazareth this spring, with the goal of supporting the well-being of Golden Flyers of the present and future.    Guests on the podcast: Amanda Foster is a senior psychology major with minors in human resources and business. Morgan first experienced mental health in the form of anxiety, and immediately it became clear to her that mental health should be treated the same as physical health. However, the stigma surrounding mental health prevented her from sharing her experience until much later. Morgan's collegiate career was unfortunately filled with numerous knee injuries and surgeries, and she was not able to step on the field and compete until her senior season. Sometimes against the advice of doctors and her parents, Morgan continued to push ahead, work on her rehab, and was able to return to the field for a successful senior year and fifth year. TW // Trigger warning: This episode contains sensitive topics. Welcome to a very special 2-part episode on Well, Not Perfect. This episode is close to my heart because it hits home for me. You guys may or may not know that I was a D1 volleyball player who experienced a sudden career-ending injury that caused me to spiral into anxiety and depression. In those years, I discovered the value of mental health and the importance of mental health in athletes. I have since dedicated my career to helping athletes never suffer in silence again and I did this over a decade ago because in mental health there was no support like there is today.   So In honor of World Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month, I am highlighting the very special nonprofit organization, Morgan's Message. Morgan's Message is an organization striving to break the stigma surrounding mental health in the athletic community. Morgan was a division 1 lacrosse player at Duke, and she silently battled depression after a career ending injury, Morgan died by suicide in 2019 at the age of 22.  After this tragic loss, her family and friends created a program that now helps hundreds of college athletes across the country.    I feel so deeply connected to this organization because, like them, I discovered the importance and my life's mission after the game was over. For me and the athletes who are involved with Morgan's Message, we pour energy into the athletic community so that no one has to suffer alone.    Join me in Part 1 and welcome Morgan's teammates and friends, Clare and Kat. Their words inspire all of us to care for one another and never be afraid to ask if someone needs help.    In today's episode, you'll learn:  How to balance the needs of friends with your needs as well   How to set gentle and loving boundaries  What to do when a friend needs your help    Morgan's Message strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics. They aim to expand the dialogue on mental health by normalizing conversations, empowering those who suffer in silence, and supporting those who feel alone. Morgan Rodgers was a former Duke Lacrosse student-athlete. Morgan was a successful student in the classroom, she had a witty and creative sense of humor, an unmatched artistic talent and carried a fierce loyalty to friends, family and animals. From the outside it looked like she had it all.In this 2-part episode, Dona And Kurt Rodgers tell Morgan's story from their point of view. What they knew, what they didn't know and what they have learned since losing Morgan to suicide in July 2019. Morgan's episode is split into two parts. Part 1 centers around Morgan's high school lacrosse success and her college recruiting process. Ultimately choosing Duke, she left Virginia to go to school in North Carolina. She enjoyed her classes, was the life of the party and was hell-bent on earning a starting position on the midfield line. Everything was aligning as planned until 10 days before the first game of her sophomore season she was sidelined with a devastating season-ending injury. After a year of rehab, still not cleared to play and with summer rapidly approaching, Morgan took a medical leave of absence to finish healing her body, coaching and spending time with her family. During this time, Kurt and Dona did not know what was going on with her emotionally. Morgan started isolating herself and was sharing less and less with her parents. Their relationship started to quiet. After taking a break from all the stress of the previous year, she seemed healthy, happy and ready to go back to Duke in the Fall of 2018 to get back on the path of which she had always dreamed.Part 2 centers around Morgan's return to campus in the Fall of 2018. She was medically cleared for play, more determined than ever and excited about the opportunity to work towards earning her spot on the field. This time the opponent she faced wasn't physical – it was emotional and mental. Everything changed for her during this time. Dona and Kurt lead us through her last few months and explain the what, how and why Morgan's Message was born.
