In today's episode, Kat chats with Nadine Crocker, an award-winning Director, Writer, Actress, and Producer, known for her impactful storytelling. Born in Nashville and raised in Fresno, Nadine moved to Los Angeles at 16 to pursue her passion for creating art that changes lives. We discuss her deeply personal film, Continue, which is based on her own survival of a suicide attempt and will be released in theaters on September 6th, 2024, for World Suicide Prevention Month. The film has garnered multiple awards, including "Best Director" at various festivals, and is the cornerstone of her nonprofit, "Continue On," focused on mental health and suicide prevention.Nadine opens up about her struggles with mental health, which began at a young age and culminated in a suicide attempt at 23, followed by years of self-harm before finding a path to healing. This experience became the foundation of Continue, where she relives her story through acting, directing, and producing—a profoundly emotional process, especially when faced with industry feedback that mental health is a topic "no one wants to talk about." Ashton and Schuyler met as freshmen on the Duke Soccer Team, and have been best friends since. Ashton now influences soccer culture as a photographer, creative director, and co-founder of The Footy Temple. She studied psychology and grew up in a family of professional athletes who shaped her understanding of mental health and toughness from a young age. We explore how Ashton adapts her support based on Scuyler's different mental health chapters and the importance of recognizing that not everyone can be the main support for others. This miniseries episode highlights how siblings can support each other's mental health. In today's episode, Schuyler speaks with Traci Pizzano, mother of three, including Dario Pizzano from Episode 85. Traci, a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) warrior, inspired Dario to create Mission Stadiums for MS, a nonprofit supporting MS research and families affected by the condition.Throughout the episode, Schuyler and Traci discuss key moments in Dario's mental health journey and how Traci supported him through similar struggles, including panic attacks. Dario's mental health challenges following retirement from professional baseball helped him understand other peoples' mental health states better, which increased communication about mental health within his family, who are some of his most important supporters. Sarah Kovan, MD, is a psychiatry resident at Brigham and Women's Hospital, specializing in the treatment of individuals with complex behavioral health needs within publicly supported healthcare systems. She has been honored with the U.S. Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Award and studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Additionally, Sarah was a collegiate athlete at Michigan State University, where she co-captained the Women's Soccer Team. During the episode, we cover lots of topics central to supporting others' mental health from Sarah's professional perspective, including the value of asking people what they need, how to approach someone who is resistant to care, and build community within sport. This episode is the foundation for the rest of the other episodes in the miniseries, thanks to Sarah's expertise.

This week, Bill Kvalheim, joins us on The Mental Matchup. Bill is a a former varsity football player at Kean University who has since become an educator and has also served as a college football coach. Bill is the founder of Tackle Depression, a non-profit organization providing knowledge, insight and resources for anyone battling mental illness. In the episode, he shares how his own struggles with mental health inspired him to create something to help others and highlights the importance of a strong support system. She also discusses the importance of breathwork and journaling to help manage her anxiety. Mary Beth is currently in her second year at Johns Hopkins for graduate school doing a Master of Science in Nursing.
On today's episode, we welcome Collette Herring to The Mental Matchup! Collette is a senior at Kennett High School in Kennett Square, PA. She shares her unique story of dealing with complications with her brain health and how social isolation can contribute to depression and anxiety. Collette grew up playing field hockey and lacrosse and is also helping to coach younger girls while also spreading the message that being an athlete does not make up your entire identity. Additionally, she is an active Morgan's Message Ambassador who relies on the MM community for strength, camaraderie and expresses how it has been a key piece of her healing journey!

Glenn has been a professional media producer for over 20 years and is now an Associate Professor of Media and Communication Studies at Catholic University. He grew up as an athlete and competed at some of the highest levels for race walking. He saw firsthand how the experience of mental health can alter an athlete's performance and how identity can be tied to your sport. This week, we are excited to welcome Chibuike “ChiChi” Odo to the podcast. ChiChi is a first generation Nigerian-American, his parents being originally from Nigeria and eventually settling in McKinney, TX. After growing up in Texas, ChiChi went on to play football and was pre-med at Davidson College in North Carolina. He talks about the struggle to balance academics and athletics in addition to experiencing multiple injuries throughout his 4 years in college. ChiChi was also honored as a 2022 Thomas J. Watson Fellow, a one-year grant awarded to seniors to take time abroad for independent exploration surrounding a topic of interest. ChiChi traveled for a year and visited 14 different countries, focusing on mental health in sport. This week we are joined by John Armistead on The Mental Matchup. John is from northern California and went on to play college lacrosse at the University of Richmond before heading to grad school and using his 5th year of eligibility to play football at the University of Southern California. During the episode, John speaks with Kat about moving across the country to attend college and the social anxiety that accompanied the move. He opens up about dealing with multiple injuries, learning to balance rigorous academics and athletics and also his experience with therapy versus relying on teammates, coaches, and friends to get through difficult times. Tara Kerr is our guest on The Mental Matchup this week. Tara grew up in NYC and is currently a senior on the women's lacrosse team at William and Mary.
