Jon Jordan and BlockchainGamer.biz editor Jenny Jordan talk through the week's news including: [2:54] Yuga Labs has been struggling since 2023 but is now focused on its Otherside metaverse. [4:03] It's testing Project Dragon, a FPS which reach 2,197 concurrent players - a new world record. [5:40] It uses Improbable's MSquared networking tech to handle this in a cost effective manner. [7:05] Improbable has also launched a new blockchain called Somnia. [8:38] It claims to handle 1 million transactions per second. [9:48] Why do we need another blockchain? The dial-up vs broadband comparison. [11:37] Improbable's CEO thinks web3 gaming is too insular and focused on token price. [14:45] Wemade's latest web3 MMORPG Legends of Ymir is #1 on Google Play [17:30] Wemade has been successful with web3-gated MMORPG like Mir and Night Crows. [19:10] These games are grindy. Jon's played Night Crows for a year and not unlocked web3 stuff. [22:20] Overall, Night Crows has been successful with 250,000 web2 players and $200M revenues. [26:55] Netmarble has revealed the 7 games it's bringing to Immutable in 2025. [32:50] It's not clear (to Jon) Netmarble has worked out the best strategy for its web3 games. [37:02] What is Immutable's signature blockchain game? What title is bringing in new players? [41:09] It's unclear (to Jon) why Immutable isn't pushing highend games like Space Nation more. [42:50] The very strange case of TOKYO BEAST. [48:56] Social deduction game The Mystery Society is shutting down ... or will it be saved?
Jon Jordan talks to Improbable CEO Herman Narula about why the UK game tech company decided it had to build its own blockchain. Called Somnia, its testnet is now live. [2:32] The Improbable genesis story: from Cambridge Uni to building games technology. [3:39] Building economies for virtual worlds means you need a blockchain for ownership. [4:54] Improbable's first success was The Multiplayer Guys, who worked on CoD, GTA, Fall Guys etc. [5:27] The biggest thing Improbable has learned is "the tenacity to pursue the mission". [5:44] The Improbable co-founders have been sanctioned by Russia due to their defence work. [6:59] The key thing for Improbable's MSquared tech is making the cost of operations so low. [8:19] Narula describes Improbable as a "venture builder" - it's a "company of companies". [9:56] What does MSquared do? It's a software platform to build large scale virtual worlds. [13:32] "We've always bet on the need for human beings to feel relatedness, even in games." [14:56] Why did Improbable have to design its own blockchain. Do we need another one? [15:32] The crypto space is obsessed with its token price. That's all they optimize for. [16:00] Somnia can handle 1 million transactions per second, with sub-second latency. [17:19] Improbable has almost a quarter of a billion dollars of cash. [19:08] "Pirate Nation's network costs are astronomical. It would save millions of dollars on Somnia." [20:55] Our focus isn't getting existing web3 games to move to Somnia, but new games. [22:23] The current problem for games is cost of UA and cost of development. [23:34] "I couldn't care less what the Somnia token price is. That's not how we make money." [25:31] Blockchain games now is like The Hunger Games - people fighting over a small amount of value. [27:39] How big a deal will AI agents be in future? How is Improbable using AI for development? [28:34] AI agents aren't going to have bank accounts. They're going to have crypto wallets. [31:02] In an post-AGI world, "Games are going to become a critical industry for human health." [35:17] If you're an EVM app, you change one line of code and move to Somnia.
We hosted a DMT celebration for the 1 year anniversary of the protocol inside 100.Bitmap. This event is a full circle moment for us after 5 years developing in the metaverse to see our community present in the metaverse on Bitcoin as we live broadcasted our own podcast to them. Through the scene we created we had on display all of the creations over the last year. From the first non-arbitrary fungible tokens like $NAT to the over 50 UNAT collections and metaverse avatars/wearables. We also were able to bring DMT Pirates on stage and have an in-world conversation with them as they explained their upcoming UNAT launch. We achieved so much as a community already, and year 2 we have even higher ambitions to create killer products and market verticals that expand the use case and application for DMT creators. We believe more events like this will help present Bitmap in a bright light and attract many more people the metaverse on Bitcoin. The demonstration of this event showcases some of the major technology upgrades coming to the NATRIX and BitmapOS supported ecosystems. With the collaboration with Msquared, all Bitmap owners will have the ability to leverage this technology to build out their own ecosystems. We are proud of the progress we have made and the community we are building who have an aligned belief in the power of a non-arbitrary metaverse ecosystem built on Bitcoin. Huge thanks to all who attended the event, more events will be hosted in the future. Topics: First up, the guys hosted a DMT celebration for the 1 year anniversary of the protocol inside 100.Bitmap. $16 billion is the estimated cost to build the new rail tunnel under the Hudson River. Decades of delays and funding spats ultimately led to the creation of the Gateway Development Commission, the bi-state entity responsible for making the tunnel a reality. Joining the podcast is Alicia Glen, co-Chair of the Gateway Development Commission, founder and managing principal of MSquared, and current CBC Trustee. Glen is also the chair of the Trust for Governors Island, and the former Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development during the de Blasio Administration.
Erin Marie has been in tech for 20 years. Prior to tech, she was a history major but became more passionate about building websites and technology. She went from web developer to programmer analyst to cloud engineering, and met her current business partner at Boeing. Outside of tech, she is into amateur photography, capturing landscapes and portraits. She is also passionate about passion and film, with her favorite grind core film titled "They call her one eye".Jesus Maria comes from the Caribbean, and enjoys beaches and being near the water. When he is not coding or coming up with crazy tech ideas, he describes the amount of heavy metal he listens to as obscene. He has 6 guitars, all tuned differently, and loves to take breaks from his tech and throw down a new riff. He's also passionate about art, and into doing illustrations. He shares the same favorite film as Erin Marie.Erin and Jesus are stationed in Denver, Colorado. During the pandemic, they were hanging out at the back yard picnic table, with wine and smokes. They were ideating over building a digital strip mall, to help local businesses build their platforms. Eventually, they started up a platform engineering company and when Lionsgate called, their pandemic picnic table idea started to grow. This is the creation story of MSquared.SponsorsPorkbun: Use the link codestory.co/porkbun and get a .dev, .app, or .foo domain name for only $5!CacheFlyClearQueryKiteworksLinkshttps://msquaredtc.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/erin-braconnier-87958531/https://www.linkedin.com/in/xuxogarcia/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/code-story/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Msquared is building critical technology to enable developers to build rich and robust metaverse experiences. Over the last several months they have showcased this tech in a variety of multiplayer demonstrations. This Halloween they created a maze experience where tens of thousands of players were competing to complete the challenge simultaneously, demonstrating the capabilities of their massive multiplayer technology. We participated and recorded our experience while discussing the applicability of this tech to the Bitmap ecosystem. Also, our review of the overall experience and thoughts on how it could be improved and reimagined to create an engaging experience for the non-gamer population of the world who seek to onboard onto the metaverse. Topics: First up, Iman and I join Msquared's Holloween event in the metaverse! Next, we go into what makes a sticky experience in a 3D internet. Then, after the Msquared event we review the overall experience and thoughts on how it could be improved and Finally, we talk about how Msquared's tech will push forward the progress of the metaverse using the metaverse markup language. On Friday, Improbable—which was reportedly valued at $3 billion when it raised funding last fall—opened up early access to its MSquared tools. MSquared (M²) is a creation suite for interoperable online worlds, spanning a network, tech stack, and metaverse markup language (MML) for creating digital assets and experiences within those worlds. In other words, it's a metaverse creation engine—and all part of what Improbable co-founder and CEO Herman Narula called a “stupidly ambitious project" and a "network of metaverses." Meanwhile, Epic Games and Nike have officially launched NFT integration into Fortnite.
The metaverse continues to progress despite its bearish sentiment. Fortnite has released a tool called creative 2.0 which is allowing creators to spin up their own games leveraging the Fortnite engine and its resulting in a boom of AAA quality experiences without the need for AAA game studios. This is huge for the UGC wave and will onboard many more people into the virtual space to find new ways to create value. Improbable and M2 also has been demonstrating some amazing technology designed to support the metaverse. One enabling thousands of concurrent users to be in the same shared space and the other a coding standard for developers to build interactive content that is deployable across any virtual environment connected to it. Also, how Twitter leverages this new technology to improve the experience of Twitter be the town hall of human civilization. Topics: First up, Iman and I look at Fortnite's creator tool and see what people made with it. Next, Elon Musk replaces the Twitter logo with Doge and what that means for crypto payments on Twitter. Then, we check out MSquare's metaverse design where you can experience thousands of players on screen Finally, will Improbable and MSquared technology be the foundation of the metaverse? (Featuring Alicia Glen, Founder and Managing principal of MSquared and former Deputy Mayor of Housing and Economic Development for New York City) https://www.afire.org/podcast/toodamnhighcast/ Alicia Glen, founder and managing principal of MSquared and former deputy mayor of housing and economic development for New York City, explains how to intelligently and profitably invest in affordable housing at scale. It isn't easy, especially when using old categories and old business models – and the biases people hold in their heads can often get in the way of seeing real opportunity. Glen is building her business—a women-owned real estate development and impact investing platform—by looking beyond unchallenged assumptions such as: poor people bring down property values; New York is too expensive; or there aren't enough talented women in real estate to hire. In this episode of the AFIRE Podcast with Gunnar Branson, Glen shows how each of these assumptions falls to the side when confronted with thoughtful analyses and forward-thinking investment philosophies that also make profitability possible while providing high-quality affordable housing at the same time. Through this lens, according to Glen, New York could actually be the affordable housing capital of the world.
Alicia Glen is the Founder & Managing Principal at MSquared, a nationwide real estate development and investment platform building the next generation of mixed-use, mixed-income projects in rapidly evolving cities. Alicia is a nationally recognized expert in urban development, infrastructure finance, job creation and housing policy. She’s worked both in the public and private sectors creating and implementing innovative solutions to enable cities to evolve and grow equitably. Alicia and I got together over zoom to talk about the role of cities, and about how to rebuild cities in a post covid world.
