On Day 3 of this Mental Health Week Mini Series Alex and Helen discuss depression and three ways they find depression exhibits itself in their lives.Lack of MotivationAlex and Helen recognise that as two people that are often quite goal-focussed and driven, it can be scary to be in a period of depression when there is no desire to do anything. How can we handle this lack of motivation?Self-acceptance and self-recognition. Alex and Helen encourage you to recognise the place and space you're in and to try to accept it.Tell someone. In sharing, you open yourself up to finding guidance and support. If you don't feel able to tell someone, step one can often be to write it down with the aim of working towards speaking to someone you trust.Readjust your goals. Perhaps your goals for the day might be going for a walk, cooking yourself a good meal and getting a good night's sleep. These things allow us to maintain some kind of basic self-care routine whilst dealing with these difficult emotions.Unhelpful coping methodsAlex and Helen are both aware that they have used a number of unhelpful coping methods to ignore their depression, including staying busy to ignore their emotions, substance abuse in the form of alcohol, and self blame. How can we handle depression differently?Recognising when your diary is unhealthily busy and combatting that by trying to carve out time for yourself in order to face the emotions you're attempting to run away from. It may be uncomfortable at first, but if you sit with your emotions and acknowledge them you're a step closer to handling them.Listening to your body. Whether it's craving sleep, a certain meal, sunshine or a hug, in listening to your body you give yourself the chance to understand what you actually need.Talking to someone. Alex and Helen discussed this in yesterday's episode with Quintin Beer but they couldn't recommend therapy highly enough.Unhealthy comparisonIn a world now dominated by social media it is easier than ever to make unhealthy comparisons about ourselves. This can feel far worse during a period of depression. How can we approach unhealthy comparisons?Take time out from social media. Often some of the worst comparisons come from a two-minute scroll on Instagram. It can be helpful to take a break from these platforms during a blue period to allow yourself the time and energy to rebuild strength.Question these comparisons! Often we feel inadequate or jealous when we see something on social media, but if we question that thought many times we can find it to be baseless. Yes, this person might have a new job and you feel jealous, but - did you even apply for that job? Would it be possible for you to have that job? What great things have you done recently because you don't have that job? Everyone's journeys are different and we can't all take the same career path in this industry. If you feel like you are suffering from depression, please feel able to talk with us here on the podcast. We'd also recommend taking a look at Help Musicians resources on mental health in music, in particular their Music Minds Matter website, and as well as that there's the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine which delivers health and wellbeing services for those in the performing arts.Episode edited and produced by Daisy Grant Productions. This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. It's a week hosted every year by the Mental Health Foundation that aims to get people across the country talking and thinking about mental health. At a time when people around the world are staying at home, and when many freelance musicians' and creatives' work has been cancelled for the next few months, looking after our mental health and wellbeing has been more important than ever. A recent study from the charity YoungMinds also indicated that more than 80% of young people felt that their mental health conditions had worsened during the coronavirus pandemic - a finding that has made it even more important for young musicians (especially who are studying at or about to leave their universities or music colleges) to protect their wellbeing during these times. On the Talking Classical Podcast, I have been doing some things to raise awareness of mental health. Last year, I recorded an interview with Lucy Thraves, Editor of Classical Music Magazine, in which we discussed the magazine's year-long campaign Harmony In Mind, raising awareness of mental health within the classical music sector. On future episodes, I would also like to be able to talk about other people’s experiences of mental health within the classical business so if you’re interested to be involved, please do not hesitate to get in contact. In the early 2000s – post-Britpop – an influx of indie bands emerged, beginning with New York based The Strokes. This paved the way for the Hives, The Vines, The Soundtrack of our Lives, and then a host of British bands – the most popular of all of them, The Libertines, as fronted by Pete Doherty and Carl Barat. Around 2003/4, following Pete and Carl's falling out in relation to drug abuse, Pete formed side project Babyshambles, which took off in its own right. After a turbulent start with drummer Gemma leaving the band, Adam Ficek – previously a musician in the band The White Sport – was brought on board as Babyshambles' drummer. My overriding memory of these early 2000s years was the extent to which drug use and litigious activity by rock stars were getting equal prominence in the press (if not more) as the music itself. While Britpop spread a message of invincibility, togetherness and youth, there seemed to be darker, sinister undertones connected to the drug culture around the 2000s bands which, for me, started to become synonymous with that time and which led to a noticeable isolation, separation and exclusivity within the indie music scene, spilling out into the behaviour and attitudes of the public fan base. I observed this shift acutely while at university when I was working a part-time job in a ticket box office of an indie club in my late teens. I really wondered about this phenomenon and welcomed the opportunity to speak to Adam Ficek of Babyshambles who was in his musical ascendancy around this time. On speaking to Adam, I became fascinated by his trajectory into the psychotherapeutic world after experiences with Babyshambles. I was keen to hear about his own understanding of how his turbulent upbringing led to deep emotional wounds that got re-triggered within the rock music industry climate of the time. We talk about that upbringing, his lifestyle on the road within Babyshambles, his exit from the band and subsequent healing process that led him to a new music journey and academic career in music psychology and psychotherapeutic practice. We also explore Adam's interest in the way sound production affects us emotionally.  Helplines and support listed below (hover over text for hyperlinks). In this episode, I speak to psychotherapist John Bassett from MITC (Music Industry Therapist Collective). All therapists in MITC began with fruitful careers within the music industry before retraining in therapy. They worked for record labels, in artist and tour management, A&R, or, as in the case of John, as sales and marketing reps for labels and music companies. They have first-hand, lived experience of the environment, and are now using that knowledge to educate, offer support and guidance, and cross-refer anyone in need of help. John and I explore the endemic culture within the industry perpetuating conditions for poor mental health, what music industry life was like in the 90s when he was involved, how songs of the time still trigger John physically, the impact of the industry on men compared to women and much more. News broke earlier this week of yet another Reality TV Star taking their own life & it really got me thinking about this 'dark side of fame.' It's heartbreaking that people get to this stage and that they don't get, or seek the help they need. In this episode I delve into the importance of taking care of your mental and emotional health as an entertainer and what it really means to love yourself to avoid spiralling down the black hole of being in showbiz. If you, or anyone you know are having any suicidal thoughts, or you're just in a 'dark' place, honour & value yourself enough to seek professional support. Some of the resources I mention in this episode are: Music Minds Matter https://www.musicmindsmatter.org.uk/ Mind https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/guides-to-support-and-services/crisis-services/helplines-listening-services Here's to your success for life Jade xo To work with me privately, please book a call iamjadestoner.youcanbook.me Keep up with me on the Gram @iamjadestoner
