On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Abigail Burrows, a professional flute player, admits that she's never had a healthy relationship with alcohol and started drinking at a very young age. She was an exceptionally talented child and was offered a place at a specialist music school aged 8. She had a busy international performing career throughout her childhood but in her late teens, she was drinking very heavily to cope with burn-out and guilt, unable to play the flute anymore and dropping out of the Royal College of Music. Later in life she returned to music and even managed to stop drinking for 5 ½ years. Celebrating this achievement with a glass of champagne, she believed her bad drinking habits had been due to being young and stupid, but after that drink, her life unravelled almost immediately, and it took her 10 years to get sober again. Her drinking took a particularly dark turn after her father died of alcoholism. Abbie is now over 1 year sober and she's never been happier. She owes her recovery to an amazing charity called Music Support who help people working in the music and live events industry. https://www.instagram.com/abbiefluteswww.abigailburrows.comMusic Support is a registered charity that helps anyone who works in the UK music industry experiencing substance use, addiction and/or mental health challenges. Find out more about their work at www.musicsupport.org. The charity is hosting “Understanding Addiction and Embracing Recovery: The Classical Edition,” a webinar in partnership with the Royal Society of Musicians on Blue Monday, 20th January, from 6pm – 730pm. It will feature Abbie and Music Support Trustee and cellist, Rachael Lander (a previous guest on my podcast). Send us a textLuckily, there's far more conversations happening about musicians' mental health these days. But how might gender impact our experience of things like depression and anxiety? And how might this differ in a music technology setting, specifically? Because, while this is something that's often touched upon in wider conversations around gender and music technology, it's rarely fully explored in its own right.Inside this conversation, Isobel chats with musicians' therapist and counsellor, Denise Devenis about the intricacies and complexities of being a woman or gender minority in music tech spaces and how this can contribute to burnout specifically. They also discuss what the industry can do better to prevent these challenges, how Denise works specifically with musicians in her private practice and how you can access support if you're affected by any of the issues we discuss in this episode. Music is a form of art. When different kinds of sounds are put together or mixed together to form a new sound that is pleasing to human beings, it is called music. Music is derived from the Greek word Mousike, which means the art of muses. Muses included the goddess of music, poetry, art, and dance in Ancient Greece. Chen Zhangyi talks to us about the importance of music. About Chen Zhangyi The music of Chen Zhangyi has been described by Straits Times as “a breath of fresh air on our musical landscape” and BBC Radio 3 as “music from a voice of the future.” Nature is often a source of inspiration in Zhangyi's music. The musical representation of Singaporean culture is another recurring theme within Zhangyi's music. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tbcy/support

This week on Rodes Live we attempt to get it right with serving up a little bit of "Humble Pie". We have music from Jonnie Taylor and Bobby Womack. There are many Men and young fathers that are in situations out of there control. Sometimes in relationships things look and appear to be one sided whether it's from a family member, sibling or an outsider. Perception of an actual situation must be looked at from every angle if you truly don't know or have the facts in front of you. The courts, judicial system and society automatically looks at a man that walks from a bad situation with shame or as the guilty party. I've recruited audio from "OG New New" and "Fuck Child Support" to be the actual voices for men going through a thing because they're actually policing the situation from inside out. The commentary is things that a lot of women need to hear because its coming from other women. The guest audio is all about accountability, mutualism, right and wrong from the female insight and truths. I've been a victim of some of the situations when it's not beneficial to allow your children to experience things in a negative light between parents. Sacha asks Morgan and Maggie who influenced Hitler? Some interesting ideas come out of the question (79:00). Sacha makes a bold claim regarding racism simply being a frame of mind and correctable on a whim and a deeper discussion grows from it (102:00) and our old friend the Kardashev Scale makes another guest appearance. Our third hour focuses on the tragic story of Breonna Taylor and the recent grand jury decision to exonerate several police officers involved in here death and we leave the rest of the episode unedited and we discuss a way out coming in the form of leadership (123:00) Sacha proceeds to call for a New World Order and some wrestling history makes its way onto the show and we discuss Secret Societies role in today's world here on earth may be occurring outside of our realm of understanding and we close out with what a leader looks like moving forward (181:00) Overture: nWo Main Entrance Theme Outro: Doobie Brothers- Listen to the Music --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/meandering/support

Episode 7: Trauma, with Adam Ficek of Babyshambles

In the early 2000s – post-Britpop – an influx of indie bands emerged, beginning with New York based The Strokes. This paved the way for the Hives, The Vines, The Soundtrack of our Lives, and then a host of British bands – the most popular of all of them, The Libertines, as fronted by Pete Doherty and Carl Barat. Around 2003/4, following Pete and Carl's falling out in relation to drug abuse, Pete formed side project Babyshambles, which took off in its own right. After a turbulent start with drummer Gemma leaving the band, Adam Ficek – previously a musician in the band The White Sport – was brought on board as Babyshambles' drummer. My overriding memory of these early 2000s years was the extent to which drug use and litigious activity by rock stars were getting equal prominence in the press (if not more) as the music itself. While Britpop spread a message of invincibility, togetherness and youth, there seemed to be darker, sinister undertones connected to the drug culture around the 2000s bands which, for me, started to become synonymous with that time and which led to a noticeable isolation, separation and exclusivity within the indie music scene, spilling out into the behaviour and attitudes of the public fan base. I observed this shift acutely while at university when I was working a part-time job in a ticket box office of an indie club in my late teens. I really wondered about this phenomenon and welcomed the opportunity to speak to Adam Ficek of Babyshambles who was in his musical ascendancy around this time. On speaking to Adam, I became fascinated by his trajectory into the psychotherapeutic world after experiences with Babyshambles. I was keen to hear about his own understanding of how his turbulent upbringing led to deep emotional wounds that got re-triggered within the rock music industry climate of the time. We talk about that upbringing, his lifestyle on the road within Babyshambles, his exit from the band and subsequent healing process that led him to a new music journey and academic career in music psychology and psychotherapeutic practice. We also explore Adam's interest in the way sound production affects us emotionally.  Helplines and support listed below (hover over text for hyperlinks). PLEDGEMUSIC COLLAPSE: UK MUSIC INDUSTRY UNITES TO SUPPORT AFFECTED ARTISTS & BUSINESSES https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Preview/?sm=7dHzuNJO40LOwYihNnmfuGU_2FmEV40bCO9NV3r_2FtSTHoxWyJCkcLteH_2F9R4Qi7coy   A group of UK-based music trade organizations and charities have launched a bid to support UK artists and businesses impacted by the collapse of D2C and e-commerce platform PledgeMusic. The collective will use an ‘impact survey' to better understand the scale of the fallout from the firm's collapse and to help coordinate assistance to those facing difficulties. The survey, hosted by the Musicians' Union (MU), can be accessed here and closes at 12pm on Tuesday June 25. As reported last month, PledgeMusic is headed into administration after it failed to find a buyer following a three month search, with estimates of what the company'sowes artists currently pinned at over $1 million. The latest action is being jointly promoted by UK Music, Music Managers Forum, Musicians' Union, the Association of Independent Music, Help Musicians UK, PRS Foundation and International Showcase Fund partners, including British Underground, PRS Members' Fund, the Music Producers Guild, The Ivor's Academy, Featured Artists Coalition, Music Support, and the BPI.     Thematic Surpasses 1 Billion ‘Demonetization-Free' Song Plays for Repped Artists   The LA-based Thematic is built on a simple premise: ‘demonetization-free' licensing for content creators on platforms like YouTube in exchange for artist and song promotion.   Now, in its public beta alone, Thematic, a company focused on enabling music artists and content creators to support each other via easy music licensing and cross-promotion, says it has facilitated more than 30,000 song placements in over 20,000 creator videos, driving more than 1 billion song plays for repped artists.   The company has constructed a licensing-safe space that prominent YouTube celebrities can tap into, without worrying about lawsuits, demonetizations, or video removals down the road. Early beta-stage participants include ODESZA, Late Night Alumni, as well as AWAL Recordings artists Lauv, Betty Who, and Matt Nathanson.   In fact, the entire company rose from the ashes of a nightmarish legal battle between YouTube celebrity makeup artist Michelle Phan and Ultra Records. According to fellow Thematic co-founder and CEO Marc Schrobilgen, Phan had been supporting many music artists through her YouTube channel, including Kaskade, before the murky waters of music licensing quickly overwhelmed her.   The result was a mega-million dollar lawsuit filed in 2014 by Ultra, which alleged massive copyright infringement.  But strangely, the suit was filed even though Ultra-signed artists like Kaskade publicly defended Phan, adding to the messiness and confusion of the situation. “From the very beginning, I've always wanted to empower and give back to creators,” Michelle Phan told us.  “Since uploading my first video 12 years ago, I've experienced lawsuits and seen first-hand what happens when big music labels come in and make copyright infringement claims. “I understand intimately the challenges facing creators today.  Through Thematic, I hope to protect creators and artists and provide a platform where they can connect, safely and free.”       Neal Cameron says: Roy and Buddy are touring this year in hologram form. So far there are a number of other artistes estates also signed up for future hologram performances. Is this the future of music?   It began in April 2012, when a virtual Tupac Shakur took the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. Billie holiday, Ronny James Did, Michael Jackson, ODB from Wu Tang is up next, Eazy E, Lisa "Left-Eye” Lopes from TLC, one of the biggest pop star sin Japan, Hatsune Miku, isn't actually a real person: She's a "digitally synthesized voice encapsulated in a crowd-sourced humanoid persona” bruce lee used in a whisky commercial although he was against drinking   artist doesn't have a choice, who has the final say? what it like to be in the band for a hologram? should we just let them go? iteraction with the crowd   Harmless Crossfire won Rak and Roll Battle of the bands on Saturday at stowmarket   Justin Bieber has challenged Tom Cruise to a cage fight. In this episode, I speak to psychotherapist John Bassett from MITC (Music Industry Therapist Collective). All therapists in MITC began with fruitful careers within the music industry before retraining in therapy. They worked for record labels, in artist and tour management, A&R, or, as in the case of John, as sales and marketing reps for labels and music companies. They have first-hand, lived experience of the environment, and are now using that knowledge to educate, offer support and guidance, and cross-refer anyone in need of help. John and I explore the endemic culture within the industry perpetuating conditions for poor mental health, what music industry life was like in the 90s when he was involved, how songs of the time still trigger John physically, the impact of the industry on men compared to women and much more.
