I caught up with iServalan at Blink Friction HQ to find out about the new collection of reclaimed art and fashion. In a world dominated by fast fashion, where mass production often drowns individuality, iServalan is carving out a bold and rebellious path. An artist, musician, and designer, iServalan is teaming up with Blink Friction on a groundbreaking, edgy upcycled clothing collection. Their mission? To create one-of-a-kind wearable art while championing sustainability, supporting musicians, and challenging conventional fashion norms.I sat down with iServalan to discuss their creative process, inspiration, and vision for the future of upcycled fashion.iServalan, your work sits at the intersection of fashion, art, and music. What inspired you to take this direction?I've always been drawn to uniqueness—whether in music, fashion, or visual art. As a musician, I know how crucial it is to have clothing that works on stage but also feels authentic on the street. I'm inspired by what I find; the material itself dictates what I create. Every piece is an experiment, a transformation. I ask: What can stay? Is it durable? What can I do with this fabric? That process is what keeps me engaged. At the same time, I'm driven by the idea of egalitarianism. On the street, people should be equal while still expressing themselves. My pieces embrace that philosophy—raw, rebellious, but also functional and inclusive.  A massive drive for me was the idea that clothes should get better with wear. We all love an old pair of Levis, or an old leather jacket. Why shouldn't clothes improve with age, with wearing, and with laundering? How was I going to achieve that goal? Well, hand stitching that shows or becomes the point, repairs that are a central part of the design, and a distressed colour pallet are just a few of the things I decided to embrace.Your collaboration with Blink Friction is gaining attention. Can you tell us more about it?Absolutely. Blink Friction is the perfect platform for my upcycled clothing because they share my passion for sustainability and individuality. Every item I make is exclusive to them. We don't do mass production; instead, we focus on meticulously crafted, unique designs that blend punk, hip-hop, glam rock, and utilitarian aesthetics. And it's more than just fashion—10% of our proceeds go to the Help Musicians charity and towards sponsoring other music projects. We want to reinvest in the creative community and give back to the artists who inspire us.Let's talk about the process. How do you transform discarded materials into statement fashion? It's labour-intensive, but I love it. I work with a mix of hand and machine stitching because some things just can't be done on a machine. I hand-dye, bleach, and paint every piece myself. Some take weeks to make, others come together in a few days. I often have multiple projects running at once, waiting for the right find to complete them.Washing and sanitizing are also a huge part of the process—people don't always realize how time-consuming that step is. I even work with discarded fast fashion pieces that are now showing up increasingly in recycling centres. Some of that material is very tricky to work with, but I don't turn it away. If I can reinvent it, why let it go to waste? It is possible to make circular fashion out of fast fashion but you have to be prepared to embrace some of its advantages.Your designs are edgy, but they also feel deeply personal. Do you see them as wearable art?100%. Every piece is an investment, a work of art with a story. They're not just clothes; they're statements. They challenge wastefulness, celebrate individuality, and push against the idea that fashion has to be disposable.I'm hoping to connect with retailers who share this ethos—boutiques or concept stores that appreciate upcycled fashion as more than just a trend. And, of course, I want to reach people worldwide who see the value in owning something no one else has. What's next for you and Blink Friction?More innovation, more collaborations, and hopefully, expanding the reach of upcycled fashion. I want to continue exploring what's possible with reclaimed materials and push the boundaries of what sustainable fashion can be. And of course, keep supporting musicians in the process. Final question—what's the one thing that ties all your pieces together?Obviously, the hand-drawn logo is on every item, sometimes small, sometimes an allover pattern. The eye means a lot to me as an artist. Modern citizens are drowning in this high-octane trajectory driven by technology and capitalism. I want everyone to calm down and look around at how great nature is, life, art, music, everything. But apart from the eye, the drive to make something real and honest, with compassion, is central to the whole Blink Friction project. I want to make something raw, expressive, and built to last. Every stitch, every dye, every patch has a purpose. That's what makes each piece special. As the world slowly wakes up to the importance of sustainability, artists like iServalan are leading the charge—not just with words, but with action. Their work with Blink Friction is more than just fashion; it's a movement, a rebellion against waste, and a celebration of individuality. If you're looking for clothing that tells a story, stands out, and supports a greater cause, keep an eye on iServalan's evolving collection. Because in the end, fashion should be more than just something you wear—it should be something you believe in.Follow iServalan & Blink Frictionhttps://www.iservalan.com/https://www.youtube.com/@taletellerclub

Send us a textLuckily, there's far more conversations happening about musicians' mental health these days. But how might gender impact our experience of things like depression and anxiety? And how might this differ in a music technology setting, specifically? Because, while this is something that's often touched upon in wider conversations around gender and music technology, it's rarely fully explored in its own right.Inside this conversation, Isobel chats with musicians' therapist and counsellor, Denise Devenis about the intricacies and complexities of being a woman or gender minority in music tech spaces and how this can contribute to burnout specifically. They also discuss what the industry can do better to prevent these challenges, how Denise works specifically with musicians in her private practice and how you can access support if you're affected by any of the issues we discuss in this episode. It's all KOHLA The seven track LP is the highly-anticipated album from this talented artist who has already forged a strong fan base thanks to previous singles One and Only premiered by Wonderland Magazine, Sweetest Love, which was awarded Single of the Week on BBC Radio Scotland, and Bedroom which was hailed as ‘an answer to pop misogyny' by The Herald Newspaper. Kohla is the project of Rachel Alice Johnson, a singer-songwriter and musician with a classical background. An interdisciplinary Scottish artist, she is a singer, songwriter, producer, fine artist, dancer, poet and a graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art. She is also the founder of Popgirlz Scotland, a support group for women in music, and lectures about feminism at international universities. A self-taught producer, working primarily in orchestral programming on Ableton software in her home studio (statistics show that only 2.9% of producers are female). She has recently been selected by Help Musicians to undertake production and mixing training with professional female Ableton trainer Anna Lakatos. Speaking about the new album, Kohla said: “I've always felt incredibly fascinated by the concept of romantic love; how cinematic and luxurious it feels to be adored by another human being. How rare it is. And how devastating it can feel to lose. “I wrote ‘Romance' whilst enduring a summer of filmic heartbreak. In desperate need of an emotional release, I turned to my piano for comfort. I wrote personally and vulnerably, for what felt like the very first time. Within eight weeks, ‘Romance' had written itself. “In hindsight, ‘Romance' feels very much to me like a ‘coming-of-age' album. From a female perspective, I realised I had grown up with a blissful naive idea of romance, whether formed through Disney or education. I felt impassioned to detach from this oppressive ideology, where women require a sub-standard partner to provide safety or validation. It feels emotional to let go of the little girl who wanted to believe in so much. But it's left me with a valuable perspective - the love I found for myself is worth so much more.” As a clarinettist she performed in school orchestras and competed in national competitions, while at home, her father would play Classic FM, subtly exposing her to masterpieces by Beethoven, Mozart and Debussy. Alongside these formative influences, Kohla draws inspiration from legendary 60s artists such as Sam Cooke and Etta James, and her cinematic production nods to the likes of Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey and FKA Twigs. ‘Romance' is co-produced by Kohla's creative partner Dave Lloyd, of the Edinburgh band Stillhound, and her sonic stories are coloured through a blend of digital and analogue, a vivid illustration of her sepia-tinged memories. Written during a summer that Kohla describes as a period of “filmic heartbreak”, ‘Romance' is the sound of emotional release and vulnerability. During the album's creation, she took inspiration from a range of sources, including daily hikes, meditation, painting and reading, the legendary soul and jazz of Etta James, Sam Cooke and Nat King Cole, Jackie Kay's poetry and Sofia Coppola's motion pictures. ‘Romance' marks the culmination of a rich and deeply creative and heartfelt chapter in Kohla's creative journey and musical career, and is an assured and alluring debut album from this exceptional artist. #KOHLA #Music #Popgirlz

He talks to Music Ally Editor Joe Sparrow about the bigger-picture possibilities and repercussions that AI could have on the music industry – he calls it "the most consequential tool the music industry could use" and one that "could solve a number of its biggest challenges," including real-time music detection, metadata, and personalised discovery. Cliff is a man with a lot on his plate – he's Joint Head of Media & Entertainment at law firm Lewis Silkin, is MD at Eleven Advisory, is Chair of the Ivors Academy Trust, and is Vice Chair of Help Musicians. He's also got deep experience working with companies in the AI music space – advising on all the various legal and business considerations that inevitably crop up when the music industry and AI come together. We took the chance to talk to someone who knows his AI onions and move the conversation along a bit from the basic legal implications. We asked him whether the music business is really prepared for the impact of AI, and we also picked his brains to discover some of the applications of AI in the music industry that you might not have yet considered. She talks to Music Ally's Editor Joe Sparrow about what she calls “reverse globalisation” of the music industry: a situation where UK artists become confined to touring in the UK due to it becoming increasingly hard to tour abroad.Post-Brexit, touring the rest of Europe is now a complex affair, involving visas and carnets, and accompanying rising costs. As a result, some musicians have been looking to America - and are finding complications there too, with the US planning to raise touring visa fees for foreign acts by more than 250%. On Day 3 of this Mental Health Week Mini Series Alex and Helen discuss depression and three ways they find depression exhibits itself in their lives.Lack of MotivationAlex and Helen recognise that as two people that are often quite goal-focussed and driven, it can be scary to be in a period of depression when there is no desire to do anything. How can we handle this lack of motivation?Self-acceptance and self-recognition. Alex and Helen encourage you to recognise the place and space you're in and to try to accept it.Tell someone. In sharing, you open yourself up to finding guidance and support. If you don't feel able to tell someone, step one can often be to write it down with the aim of working towards speaking to someone you trust.Readjust your goals. Perhaps your goals for the day might be going for a walk, cooking yourself a good meal and getting a good night's sleep. These things allow us to maintain some kind of basic self-care routine whilst dealing with these difficult emotions.Unhelpful coping methodsAlex and Helen are both aware that they have used a number of unhelpful coping methods to ignore their depression, including staying busy to ignore their emotions, substance abuse in the form of alcohol, and self blame. How can we handle depression differently?Recognising when your diary is unhealthily busy and combatting that by trying to carve out time for yourself in order to face the emotions you're attempting to run away from. It may be uncomfortable at first, but if you sit with your emotions and acknowledge them you're a step closer to handling them.Listening to your body. Whether it's craving sleep, a certain meal, sunshine or a hug, in listening to your body you give yourself the chance to understand what you actually need.Talking to someone. Alex and Helen discussed this in yesterday's episode with Quintin Beer but they couldn't recommend therapy highly enough.Unhealthy comparisonIn a world now dominated by social media it is easier than ever to make unhealthy comparisons about ourselves. This can feel far worse during a period of depression. How can we approach unhealthy comparisons?Take time out from social media. Often some of the worst comparisons come from a two-minute scroll on Instagram. It can be helpful to take a break from these platforms during a blue period to allow yourself the time and energy to rebuild strength.Question these comparisons! Often we feel inadequate or jealous when we see something on social media, but if we question that thought many times we can find it to be baseless. Yes, this person might have a new job and you feel jealous, but - did you even apply for that job? Would it be possible for you to have that job? What great things have you done recently because you don't have that job? Everyone's journeys are different and we can't all take the same career path in this industry. If you feel like you are suffering from depression, please feel able to talk with us here on the podcast. We'd also recommend taking a look at Help Musicians resources on mental health in music, in particular their Music Minds Matter website, and as well as that there's the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine which delivers health and wellbeing services for those in the performing arts.Episode edited and produced by Daisy Grant Productions. As Apple iPods, then iPhones, Music streaming services like Spotify and now COVID-19 have all seriously disrupted the music industry over recent decades, how has Michael Chugg navigated these potential minefields, and turned the internet from a disrupter into an opportunity for musicians? And is there a future for the live music scene, when life and borders open back up post-COVID? Well for an entrepreneur who has demonstrated such currency, impact and longevity in the industry, his insights into the path for success for young musicians might surprise you. In Part 2 of our interview he also reveals some of the work in the music and major events landscape of which he is most proud, not just for the sheer entertainment it provided to audiences, but for its ability to really mean something, for others in need. And that includes his largely unsung role helping turn the Paralympic Games into a world-class, quality, hugely popular event. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Join station host Eddie Davis (Captain Eddie) in his exclusive chat with singer-songwriter, podcaster, author Demi Michelle, right here in our Heart of Indie studio! Heartfelt, charismatic, and unique are three words used by reviewers to describe Demi Michelle’s music. She turns her life experiences into songs that touch the hearts of her listeners through captivating storytelling in her lyrics. Her creativity and love for both pop and country music drive her passion for writing meaningful songs with melodies that wrap each song’s message in the warmest hug. She greatly looks up to Julia Michaels, Kelsea Ballerini, and Taylor Swift, three incredible songwriters who share their stories in raw and truthful ways. Demi strives to remain honest and authentic as a songwriter in her own music and during her collaborations with other songwriters and artists. Demi pieced together her songwriting passion over the years. She began piano lessons in fifth grade, took voice lessons in high school, and learned guitar while in college. Also being a creative writer and in graduate school for her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction, Demi is always finding ways to blend her musical talent and storytelling in powerful ways. In the fall of 2019, Demi began recording at the Vault Recording Studio in Pittsburgh, where she works closely with her producer to bring her songs to life in the way she envisions them. She started her songwriting journey with two pop ballads, “Into Focus,” and her original Christmas song, “All I Want This Christmas.” “All I Want This Christmas” was played during part two of Voice of A Woman’s Christmas Special on Claremorris Community Radio in Ireland. Demi is ready to show the world her ability to write in more than one genre. Her third single and first country-pop song, “LA Will Wait for Me,” released on March 12. The song has received airplay during radio shows, including Country Belles on Belter Radio, Voice of A Woman on Claremorris Community Radio, the Collective Music Showcase flagship show for independent artists on ARC Radio, Unsigned on the Beach Radio, New Country Sunday Night on MJM Strategies Radio, Simply Country on Ridge Radio, SW20 Country Music Show on SW20 Radio, Country Chat with Dom on UK Country Radio, and Steve Garnett’s New Music Radio Show and Indie Afternoon on Revival Radio. “LA Will Wait for Me” entered Revival Radio’s New Music Top 40 chart at number 5 and peaked at number 4. During the week of April 17, Demi was made an artist of the week on Radio New Wheels, a radio station based in the Netherlands. Also, on March 28, Demi performed during the SW20 Country Birthday Bash. This virtual country music festival benefitted Help Musicians, a UK charity supporting professional musicians of all genres and career levels. During Demi’s forty-minute set, she performed “LA Will Wait for Me,” along with more country originals and covers.

In today’s episode, Digital PR students and hosts Andrew, Griffin and Ray talk social media and musicians. Over the last decade, musicians have come to use social media to take advantage of trends, collaborate with influencers and become influencers themselves. Our hosts reflect on some of the past successes and failures of musicians using social media from the widely successful 2016 Mannequin Challenge to Rita Ora’s 2014 failed attempt at a viral tweet on Halloween. What can we learn about PR professionals about viral trends, working with influencers, and how artists become influencers themselves? The hosts explore these questions and more. Also in this episode, the hosts discuss how musicians have come to use social media during the pandemic. Virality and influencers are becoming increasingly important, particularly with the almost complete shutdown of live concerts and events for over a year in the United States and many other countries. From going viral on TikTok to “live concerts” on Twitch and video games, there’s been a lot of development and changes in how artists can share their music and keep themselves connected with their fans. Will these changes be permanent or are they temporary? My guest this week is Chief Executive Officer for BAPAM (The British Association of Performing Arts Medicine) Claire Cordeaux.  BAPAMs expert clinicians understand the demands of a performing arts career and can help you with physical and mental health problems related to your creative practice.  Every month BAPAM offer free training sessions on keeping mentally well, vocal health and injury prevention for performing artists and those in training.  Since Lockdown they have started new online community drop in sessions on Tuesday afternoons at 3pm. Claire has a background in social care and shares her wealth of experience combined with love of playing live music. You don't have to be sick to get help from BAPAM, if you do have a health problem that is affecting your ability to do your job in performing arts call them on 0207 404 8444 or visit https://www.bapam.org.uk.   For many who participated in the first online community group over the summer, Claire observed it wasn't only the common issues of being unable to work (due to covid restrictions/lockdown), having no money, being missed out completely from the government financial help schemes through lockdown and the stress that all that can bring in itself but also that suddenly how you identify yourself comes into question.   Being a musician or singer is very often a calling and if you can't do it, or there doesn't appear to be a purpose in doing it, you can lose all motivation, you can experience grief-like symptoms, develop feelings of isolation and hopelessness, which in turn can affect your mental health and wellbeing.  If you need help with this please get in touch with BAPAM, who are funded by Help Musicians, MU (Musicians Union), Equity, PPL, PRS Members Fund and others.     During our chat Claire references some of her favourite performances which you can enjoy here: Anjelique Kidjo - Akwaba Joni Mitchell - Little Green (Live NYC 1967) The above link has a brief audio interview with a young Joni talking about stumbling into music. Followed by a live performance of Little Green in New York in 1967.  I hadn't watched this performance before and found it quite captivating,  I was interested how natural her flow was and how much the lyrics got me thinking!  Don't you love song lyrics that seem like they are offering advice, or a view that offers new possibilities?
