Play Along at Home. Hey ScumBaggers, Josh here from the Sounds Unprofitable newsletter. Where we try our best, to do our worst, and our mission statement was written by Fred Durst. As you might've noticed we've hired every degenerate in the Podcasting space to help us achieve our aim, of being unemployed and drowning in shame. And we want the same for you, you, you!! We're not here to give you knowledge, research or motivation: we're here to do next-to nothing, and take a permanent vacation. Stick around for semi-readable articles like this one: “How to pre-purchase the Choad-Master Blow 2.0 on GE Finance and tap your retirement accounts to cover the payments” ..cause folks, the author of this article is the perfect person, she looks like Elizabeth Olsen and avoids taxes like Willie Nelson. So if you're sick of reading run-of-the-mill podcasting articles, and would prefer to hear about running-on-pills and making podcasting farcical, make sure you keep tuning your radios to our on-demand RSS powered telepathic premium posts, and I'll see in you my second ex-wife's kitchen on Sunday for a poorly cooked roast. Keep following your dreams, and feeding your soul, I'm off to close all my bank accounts and miss my next payroll. In this episode, Chris and Jody take another deep dive into a classic piece of kit. This time, the LA-2A Leveling Amplifier. They take brief look at the history of the unit, it’s different versions, through software versions as well how they like to use it in their workflow and mixes. As always, there’s also some nonsense discussed. And if you’re keeping score at home, the Logic emulation is called ‘Vintage Opto’.Shoutout to: Slate, Warm Audio, Universal Audio, Teletronics, Waves, Brainworks, Native Instruments, T-Racks, Monty Python, Harem Scarem, Car horns, ML sound lab amp sims, Arizona - Problems, SpotifyGear We Used:Jody’s Mic & Voice Chain: Telefunken C12 - Apollo - UA Neve 1073 - UA LA2 - UA Studer A800Jody’s Channel Strip: iZotope RX 8 Spectral DeNoise - iZotope RX 8 Mouth DeClick - UA Neve 1073 - UA LA2 - UA 1176EChris’ Mic & Voice Chain: Slate ML1 - Apogee Duet - iZotope RX 7 Voice DeNoise - Slate VMR (FG12 - FG76 - API EQ - SSL 4kE)Chris’ Channel Strip: Eventide Precision Time Align - iZotope RX 8 Spectral DeNoise - iZotope RX 8 Mouth DeClick - UA Neve 1073 - UA LA2 - UA 1176EMaster: Soothe 2 - iZotope Ozone 9 Imager - iZotope Ozone 9 Maximize

Riley (@raaleh), Hussein (@HKesvani), and recently returned Milo (@Milo_Edwards) speak with migrant advocate Zoe Gardner (@ZoeJardiniere ) about refugees, migrants, right-wing opposition to all forms of immigration, endless liberal equivocation on the topic, and whether or not Riley is an economic migrant (he is). This episode was recorded prior to England’s advancing in the World Cup, though by the time we have a moment to even address the fact that it’s coming home, the joke will already have been murdered by the worst people on the face of the planet. You can commodify your dissent with a t-shirt from http://www.lilcomrade.com/, and if you’re a keen chef you can acquire kitchen-related goods from our socialist cookware sponsor, Vremi (https://vremi.com/). Nate (@inthesedeserts), who lives in a country founded by some particularly enthusiastic economic migrants, produced this with Adobe Audition, iZotope RX, and iZotope Ozone.

Can robots really master our music ? Kenny Gioia set up poll on Facebook to see, asking people to choose between six different masters of the same song - three by humans (John Longley, an anonymous engineer from Sterling Sound and Steven Slate) and three by machines (LANDR, Aria and iZoTope Ozone). The great thing is, the test was blind, and loudness matched - so no-one knew which master they were listening to, and loudness didn't influence the way the masters sounded. And the results of the poll were fascinating. In this show Kenny reveals which master was which, and we discuss the results - including: * Why this is not a scientific test * Ian's blind comments on the masters, including his instincts about which was which * Why the poll results are probably skewed * When automated makes sense * What the robots still can't do - and maybe never will Full show notes and links: http://themasteringshow.com/episode-43

A Q&A episode with a twist - we recorded it live, with questions arriving all the time we were recording. We've added them all to the list for future episodes - here are the ones we had time to tackle this time: * How has mastering changed over Ian's career, and where is it going next ? * Is there somewhere out there with reference tracks for mixing and mastering ? * Are there any tips for avoiding the trap of "mastering with your eyes" ? * Should you use compression when mastering classical music ? If so, when ? * Why you shouldn't make master everything at -14 LUFS for online streaming * Is absolute polarity audible ? Does it matter ? * Is “AI” mastering like iZoTope Ozone 8 any good ?
