Joshua Radewan is a Spiritual Coach, Public Speaker and Author who lives in rural Wisconsin. He is also co-owner of Aligned Alchemy a metaphysical shop in downtown Montello, Wisconsin. After going through a Spiritual Awakening in 2017 the trajectory of his life was forever changed. Before his awakening he was an atheist who was very outspoken against religion and spirituality. Shortly after his awakening experience the angels began to show themselves to him. To work with him in repairing his mind and body. To aide him in reconnecting with his spirit. He is now a coach to others who have started the awakening process. Helping to dispel fear, worry, dread, anxiety, guilt and shame. Holding space so that others may discover their purpose and claim their space in this world. In addition to this he has recently written a course with his fiancee, Cassandra, called Bridging the Gap an Intro into Angelic and Energetic Work so that they can reach people in both Eastern and Western philosophies and bridge the gap between the cultural differences. This course is geared toward anyone looking to deepen their connection to the Angelic Realm and understand how to work with them to heal the spiritual and psychological wounds in the Chakra system. The Great Basin! Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Desert, 15min., USA Directed by Eric Weeks The Great Basin! Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Desert is a film, book and print project that addresses climate change, the severe drought in the Western United States, gun culture, the military's use of the basin and range of Nevada for atomic testing, cultural stereotypes, my own personal history, and my experiences in this mostly remote area. In the 15 minute short film I am creating complex collages of my still and motion captures made in Nevada with appropriated short clips from Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, recent weather footage, The Lone Ranger, as well as John Wayne's and other historic films, cartoons, and many other cultural artifacts, in order to speak to the place and its significance. https://ericweeksphoto.com/the-great-basin-2 Get to know the filmmaker: In early 2022, I applied to a unique residency through the Montello Foundation (https://www.montellofoundation.org/) in Montello, Nevada. The residency is designed for one person to spend two weeks completely off of the grid in the basin and range of northeast Nevada. I was fortunate to be awarded a residency for that summer. While there I captured moving and still images, and did a deep research dive about the area. Two out of the twenty plus books that I read while there were instrumental in my conceptualization of my film The Great Basin! Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Desert. They were Rebecca Solnit's Savage Dreams and John McPhee's Basin and Range. While there in that peaceful and contemplative environment, I realized how so much of the human activity that has taken place in Nevada has affected my experience. Climate change, gun culture, atomic testing, cultural stereotypes, and my childhood came bubbling up for me, and I needed to make my film. I understood that I couldn't tell this story with my images of the basin and range alone, so when I returned to New York City after the residency, I began to appropriate clips from classic films, TV commercials, cartoons, etc. You can sign up for the 7 day free trial at www.wildsound.ca (available on your streaming services and APPS). Maxine Montello - Cold weather stuns sea turtles. The rescue plane. by John Catsimatidis
More youth are participating in Esports - and it's nothing like the trope stereotype of “gamer kids” isolated in their basements, chomping on chips and sipping sodas while gaming online with other kids in similar grunge contexts. In this episode, Esports expert Mike Dahle will help to accurately inform us about school Esports, including how it's in-person and team-centric, ways Esports hones skills for learning - from analytical problem solving to time management, and how Esports helps students consider STEM career paths. In fact, universities are providing scholarships for Esports athletes! ABOUT MIKE DAHLE. Mike Dahle is a Business Teacher at Elkhorn Area HS and President of the Wisconsin HS Esports Association, WIHSEA.org. He was a second-year teacher when he learned how far PC gaming had come since his younger gaming days when a student gave a presentation on the League of Legends World Championship. Ever since that presentation, his interest in esports has grown exponentially. He started one of the first state associations that has since grown to 125+ schools around the state, serves as a Board Member for the Milwaukee Esports Alliance, serves as a Board Member for the Interstate Scholastic Esports Alliance, and is constantly trying to push esports to the next level in the state of Wisconsin. WHAT DOES BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY LOOK LIKE FOR ESPORTS. There isn't a template for BOE policy for Esports. It's often treated similar to other school clubs. Surprisingly, some districts have bypassed Esports due to the cartoonish guns in some of the games. It's worth noting that high school trap shooting team numbers are at record highs in America. ARE ESPORTS INDIVIDUAL OR TEAM? Most games are team-based, and individual matches add into a team score. This happens in the game SUPER SMASH BROTHERS, for example. Think of it like batting order in baseball. Players are seeded so one school's #5 player would compete against the #5 player from a different school. Esports can be played by teams within a state, but also between states. It depends upon how the league is structured. WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR ESPORTS? The top five popular titles are: Super Smash Bros, Rocket League, Fortnite, Valorant, and League of Legends. ARE ESPORTS ACCESSIBLE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES? Yes! There is much flexibility in accommodating Esport players as long as the accommodation doesn't afford them an unfair competition edge. In Milwaukee, for example, a company designs adaptive controllers. A high-ranked quadriplegic player uses a mouth-held device to game. Esports also require minimal travel. Students typically only leave their district if they are participating in a state-level competition. 3D PRINTING AND ESPORTS. The 3D printing community collaborates through sites such as “Thingiverse” to create different or adapted controllers, and Microsoft offers several adaptive controllers. BENEFITS OF ESPORTS FOR STUDENTS. Gamers gain useful skills from participating in esports that help them on a broader learning journey. Analytical problem solving, time management, collaboration, and teamwork are key. Video games can also help to improve visual perception, enhance memory, and lead to better focus and attention. Some students who participate in Esports had previously not participated in other extracurricular activities. DO SCHOOLS GIVE CREDIT FOR ESPORTS. In most instances, students do not receive “credit” for participating in Esports. There is no curriculum approved by DPI to this point, although there is discussion to develop a curriculum. There is an inaugural INTRO to ESPORTS class at UW (Wis)-Parkside this year. Some Wisconsin schools, including: Random Lake, Racine, and Montello, award a patch for varsity. ARE ESPORTS PART OF TRADITIONAL STATE ATHLETIC ORGANIZATIONS? This varies by state. In Wisconsin, the WIAA and WIHSEA are separate entities and, at present, do not collaborate. Playfly (an Esports business) partners with high school state associations in Washington and Arizona to provide students with the infrastructure to compete and learn. HOW DO SCHOOLS FUND ESPORTS? Esports has a very small funding footprint. Coaches are either unpaid volunteers or receive stipends ranging from $400 to $5,000. Compensation for coaches and persons managing leagues is inconsistent across schools. Esports is generally under-funded when compared to compensation for coaches or people who oversee school clubs. Twitch channel and affiliate program generates $2.50 per subscriber. SPONSORS at the local level (Wisconsin) include: Spectrum Industries from Eau Claire, Bug Tussel Wireless, and Allstate insurance agents. Jolly Good Soda sponsors Random Lake. There are no state-level sponsors for Esports in Wisconsin. It is difficult for Esports groups to obtain a bank account or PayPal. Some schools host fundraiser invitationals. The “Extra Life” www.extra-life.org gaming marathon is a 24-hour charity event that raises money for children's hospitals, including Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. It was held on November 5, 2022. POST HIGH SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES AND CAREERS. There is a significant and growing collegiate scene for Esports with various organizers, including The National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE). Students might receive scholarships. Post-secondary institutions have dedicated facilities and faculty, and the universities that recognize Esports as a varsity level program enable players to compete for a national championship. In less formal settings, Esports might be thought of similar to intramural sports, or be student-run club level teams, like Rec Well or Student Life. Collegiate teams can compete in other leagues. Universities feature Esports as a recruitment tool. ESports might have a similar influence for K-12 open enrollment. Beyond gaming, players maximize Esports to develop their own business acumen - complete with social media marketing, analytics, coaching, blogs, analyzing competition film, networking, and IT infrastructure. Being an Esports player or working in an Esports league as an analyst, IT, etc., has parallels to an internship in marketing and IT. WHAT SHOULD PARENTS AND SCHOOL LEADERS KNOW ABOUT ESPORTS? Esports is broadly popular, but specifically offers opportunities for a school's under-represented students. For some students, Esports is the only extracurricular activity they participated in during their school career. And there's evidence to suggest that playing Esports improved student's grades and attendance. Esports aligns with the CDC's themes for School Connectedness. At Arrowhead Union High School (Wisconsin), 60-70 students stay after school on Fridays to play Esports. Parents drop off TVs and students even play under tables. Esport players are voluntarily participating in-person with their peers. They are not sitting at home in their basement. Esports participants learn play-by-play announcing, media coaching, post-game interviewing, and public speaking skills. Esports has helped students obtain scholarships. One student received a 60% scholarship. He was an athlete on the autism spectrum. “If you leverage this program correctly, you can do a ton with it.” The National Association of Esports Coaches and Directors works to serve, legitimize, and advance Esports at all levels https://www.naecad.org/about-naecad. Mankato University (MN) presented at the NAECAD conference. It's ranked as the top school for broadcasting. An Esport player's next step could be to form a broadcasting club, or to pursue a career in broadcasting - perhaps by attending Mankato University. MORE THINGS SCHOOLS SHOULD CONSIDER ABOUT ESPORTS. Some games include cartoon guns, a disqualifying feature per some school districts. Student data privacy is a concern. What is on the networks? Is there an in-game chat feature, and if so, how do we turn it off? The Esports launching software can present challenges. The games themselves are efficient, but the system to access the game can be buggy. Schools should create separate Esports logins on computers and also toggle settings so Esports can't be accessed until after 2PM. Esports is inclusive, and also an equity-oriented activity. You don't need expensive gear and to pay a sports fee to participate. You also don't have to rent expensive facilities. Esports increase opportunities for students both as players as well as other niche roles, such as announcing, communications, web design, and IT. There isn't a Name-Image-Likeness (NIL) prohibition clause in Esports. Although it is rare, a high school Esports player could enter into paid sponsorship deals - and by doing so, wouldn't have to forfeit their eligibility to play Esports. Esports can be included in the school district's DPI 5-year Pupil Nondiscrimination report as increasing extracurricular opportunities for students. It is particularly inclusive for students with disabilities or students without the financial means to participate in activities that have higher barriers to entry for personal equipment costs, facility rentals, and participation fees. Esports teams can consist of a mixed-gender roster. Consider formal club recognition for Esports to facilitate a funding account in your school district's fiscal chart of accounts. Where is Dylan Rounds, join us with Candice Cooley to discuss the investigation. DAHO FALLS — The FBI is now involved in the case of an eastern Idaho man who disappeared from a remote farm near the Utah/Nevada border nearly a month ago. Dylan Rounds, 19, had been farming in the desert town of Lucin, Utah during summer months over the past few years. His grandmother last spoke with him on Saturday, May 28 and nobody has heard from him since then. There has been no sign of Rounds anywhere and no activity on his cell phone or bank account, according to his parents. RELATED | The boots of a missing young man have been found, and his mother is speaking about his disappearance Multiple searches have been conducted in the remote Utah town and in nearby Montello, Nevada. The Box Elder County Sheriff's Office is the lead law enforcement agency but the FBI confirms they are now helping with the investigation. “We routinely offer our assistance and resources to our law enforcement partners,” FBI spokeswoman Sandra Barker tells EastIdahoNews.com. A plea for help Dylan's mom and dad sat down with EastIdahoNews.com Wednesday in their first joint interview since their son vanished. They hope the FBI's involvement will lead to some answers. “The main goal is to find Dylan. That's the first and only priority but (the other goal) is to just find out who did what and make sure they get what they got coming to them with the law or whatever,” says Justin Rounds, Dylan's father.
Welcome to Episode 962 Marc Millon interviews Andrea Milesi of Ferrowine in this special 5Star Wines & Wine Without Walls episode of Wine, Food & Travel with Marc Millon on the Italian Wine Podcast. This is part of a special sub series in which Marc interviews the winners and the contributors of the competition in the coming weeks! More about Ferrowine: The adventure of the Ferro family began in 1920 as a tavern with a shop and then developed as a cellar. In those years, in fact, Giovanni Ferro bought grapes in the neighboring production areas and vinified them. A small business that supplied taverns, families and customers. Shortly thereafter, the first home distributions also started, which took place with a simple cart pulled by a horse. In the following years, his son Gastone transformed the winery business into a commercial company. He immediately joined wine with drinks, specializing in the trade of grappa, vermouth, chinati, French liqueurs and Marsala which were among the most popular products at the time. In 1990 his sons, Michela and Giovanni, took over the company and through expansions and acquisitions extended the commercial boundaries to the Montello and Pedemontana area. A more organized sales network and a new strategy allowed a wider and more widespread distribution. The hunt for Dylan Rounds #DylanRounds #CandiceCooley #Missingperson #FoulPlay BRIGHAM CITY — A young Box Elder County farmer remains missing three weeks after he was last seen just over the Utah line in Montello, Nevada, and a Box Elder County sheriff's official said Thursday the case is an active criminal investigation. “We are looking at all avenues as to why he's missing,” Box Elder Chief Deputy Cade Palmer said of Dylan Rounds, 19, who lived in a trailer at his farm in the Lucin area on the county's western edge. “Our son did not walk into the desert and disappear,” Rounds' mother, Candice Cooley, of Twin Falls, Idaho, said in a Facebook post. “His farm and everything he's worked for is out there and someone knows something.” She said her son was last seen in Montello on May 27 and that his boots were found three days later behind a dirt pile about 5 miles west of his farm. The parents have offered a $20,000 reward for information about Rounds. Palmer declined to release further information about the disappearance due to the criminal investigation. But regarding the search, he said Box Elder deputies have covered 3,000 miles in their searching. Numerous law enforcement and search and rescue units have helped, such as the Box Elder County Horse Posse, the Elko County, Nevada, Sheriff's Office, Weber County Sheriff's Search and Rescue and the Utah Department of Public Safety's Aero Bureau. Palmer said anyone with information about Rounds' disappearance can call the sheriff's office at 434-723-5227, ext. 3894 or 3131. Efforts to contact Cooley were not immediately successful.
FL Morris, a hemp grower from Monroe and co-founder of the South Central Hemp Cooperative, is optimistic about the hemp sampling transition from DATCP to USDA. She says a USDA-ran program means there will be more samplers (because the private sector is now involved) and less cost. Meanwhile, Scott Battuello of SwampBuck Farms in Montello is more cautious. He says while lower cost and more samplers are a good thing, a USDA program means there are more players involved and more room for error. Since growers have just begun the process of reaching out to their FSA office, time will tell how smooth the transition will be, he says. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We're getting another look at what the hemp crop looks like in Wisconsin so far this year. Scott Battuelo is the founder of SwampBuck Farms in Montello. He grows over 1,100 hemp plants spanning two acres. He's just moved his plants from the greenhouse to the ground beginning June 9th. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On December 17, 2021, the CDC changed its guidance for students in schools who have been “close contacts” to persons that have tested positive for COVID-19. In this episode, Doc analyzes the new guidance, compares it to previous guidance, unpacks how contact tracing works in schools, and also takes a macro-look at overall immunization compliance in schools for students K-12 for mumps, measles, rubella, polio, and other required (non-COVID) vaccinations. Doc studied schools' data and assembled a graphic with alarming information. Thanks to all of you for helping Doc surpass 1000 subscribers to his “The Safety Doc” YouTube channel. CDC TEST-TO-STAY. From the CDC: “Test to Stay combines contact tracing and serial testing (testing that is repeated at least twice during a seven-day period post-exposure) to allow asymptomatic school-associated close contacts who are not fully vaccinated and do not test positive for SARS-CoV-2 to continue in-person learning. Because fully vaccinated close contacts are not required to quarantine following exposure, they would not be included in Test to Stay. Students who participate in Test to Stay should consistently and correctly wear masks while in school and should stay home and isolate if they develop symptoms or test positive for SARS-CoV-2. In the studies done in Illinois and California, both the person with COVID-19 and the close contact had to be properly masked at the time of exposure to qualify for Test to Stay. If schools are considering implementing Test to Stay, they should also have robust contact tracing in place and access to testing resources (for example, testing supplies and personnel to conduct testing, or access to an existing community testing site), among other layered prevention strategies. Testing frequency can vary (for example, from twice in a seven-day period to daily), but more frequent testing can more quickly identify students who become infected with SARS-CoV-2 and need to isolate.” CONTACT TRACING IN SCHOOLS. Dr. Perrodin shares that most school districts in his state have fewer than 1000 students and do not employ a designated “contact tracer.” Close Contacts are determined by settings in the school's schedule software. For example, identifying which students were in a 7th hour geometry course attended by a student who tested positive for COVID. Doc is skeptical of the test-to-stay guidance due to shorthanded schools and lack of tests. WISCONSIN STUDENT IMMUNIZATION COMPLIANCE CHECK. Wisconsin Immunization Law (State Statute 252.04)requires that each of the state's 421 school districts annually submit a report of immunization compliance for students. The 2020-2021 compliance requirements are found at (https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/publications/p44021.pdf). Here are the requirements: K-5: 4 doses polio, 3 doses hepatitis B, 2 doses MMR, and 2 doses Varicella. Per Wisconsin DHS, students are compliant with the immunization law if they meet all of the minimum immunization requirements, are considered “in process”, or have a waiver on file. The percent of Students Compliant with Immunization Law in 2020-2021 in Wisconsin is publicly available at https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/publications/p02388a.pdf : Here are reports from 12 of Wisconsin's 421 school districts: Blair Taylor 628 students total enrolled in district = no reports received; Beloit 5426 students with 389 students not in compliance = 92.82%; Baraboo = 100%; Ashland 1863 students with 95 students not in compliance = 94.87%; Butternut = no reports received; Columbus 1242 students with 30 students not in compliance = 97.52%; Fall River 492 students with 3 students not in compliance = 99.38%; Portage = 100%; Potosi = no reports give; Madison 25,503 students with 438 students not in compliance = 98.28%; Milwaukee 66,977 students with 6429 students not in compliance = 90.40%; and Montello (614 students with 29 students not in compliance = 95.22%. 32/421 (8%) school districts did not submit reports! This is abysmal, yet there are no statements from the DPI or DHS indicating efforts to complete the data sets. The European continent is not free from tornado events. While in the USA, some 1,200 tornadoes could be observed annually, on the European continent only 300 events every year are recorded. Europe experiences less frequent events than USA, but storms can be really devastating. Storms occur when warm humid air near the surface lay under drier air aloft with temperatures decreasing rapidly with height, providing energy for the storms through the production of instability. Large changes in wind with height or ‘‘wind shear'' over both shallow and deep layers—combined with the instability and high humidity near the surface—create a situation favorable for tornadoes to form. Midwestern American areas are an incredible basin that in summer fills with hot air and humidity, provided by the Gulf of Mexico; the drier air comes from Canada, providing energy for the storms through the production of instability. In Europe the northeast of Italy is often the place in which cold air coming from the Alps encounter warm and humid air coming from the Adriatic Sea and Africa, and cause widespread severe thunderstorms across the plains of northern Italy. On July 24, 1930 the vicinity of Montello in the Po river valley of northeastern Italy, just south of the southern foot of the Alps was hit by the strongest tornado in Europe on record. The tornado maxed out on the Fujita scale at F5 rating, producing extreme damage – even destroying strong masonry like churches. The area was devastated with more than 20 fatalities and whole villages wiped off the map. Learn more about your ad choices.

Frankly, I’m astonished by how little school systems spend on covering purpose in students’ lives. Where do they see themselves in 10, 20 years? We leave them to the “next step” (either lost and apathetic or in incredible amounts of debt) to figure it out for themselves. How do we go about creating a purposeful society? Is it possible for a teacher to actually make a change? And, in addition, what about our sense as educators in the classroom? What about our purpose?GUESTS IN ORDER OF APPEARANCEDr. Kendall Cotton Bronk, head of the Adolescent Morality Lab at Claremont Graduate School, Dr. Cotton Bronk is one of the founding/leading researchers surrounding youth purpose-finding.Dr. John Cagle, a 27-year public education educator who currently serves as Assistant Principal at Jefferson County High School in Tennessee. Paola studia beni culturali, Lucia è laureata in scenografia, Marilena laureanda in fisica e ricercatrice all'università di Vienna. For me Alternative Finance is the most exciting sector in Fintech by far in terms of near term impact as competition for the “Old FS” and as choice for both borrowers and lenders. In this episode I am delighted to be joined by Christian Faes CEO of Lendinvest. In the world of Fintech froth that has been 2014 Lendinvest and Christian are the real deal. In this episode we “kick the tyres” of P2P and have an organic conversation exploring some key angles in the sector right now. There is plenty of “linear” content out there (eg this concise YouTube explaining Lendinvest), and conference panel discussions (eg this LendIt one with Christian on the panel) – and they are all great. However as usual on the podcast I aim more for the kind of conversation that one might have with the insiders in the bar after the formal conference. This is also a special episode in being rather longer than normal – there is so much to be discussed as the sector is very active right now and the future is busy taking place with lots of seismic shifts happening beneath our feet. We discuss a whole variety of topics as we kick the four tyres around the car – Lendinvest; penetrating the subsector’s opaque/confusing terminology; understanding the risks; and the future of the industry. In editing the podcast (which means I listen to it many times) I progressed my own thoughts on how I see the risk in P2P and how to describe it simply. So for the avoidance of doubt I put the risk thoughts in a “Postscript” section down below to make it obvious that these are my afterthoughts and language (Christian’s comments are in the podcast). However I think that the terminology will be helpful in listening to the podcast so it’s not an “unrelated” mini essay Lendinvest In the AltFi awards Lendinvest was ranked as the best UK fintech-real estate platform (which has done over £166m of deals to date). Recently I heard a leading Fintech analyst describe them as the best dark horse bet for London’s first major fintech IPO. They have grown organically from being a “non-digital” real estate lending business to the world’s largest real estate platform. And all of this without raising any VC money. Since 2008 they have returned (in one incarnation or another – more on that in the show) over 6% to investors via secured short-term bridging loans (1mt-1yr) with LTV’s (loan-to-value ratios) of around 60% and no capital losses. More recently they have added a 1-3yr buy-to-let mortgage product. Lendinvest also have a (relatively?) unique twist to their business model in that their (financially separate) fund management company Montello pre-funds/underwrites the deals they list on their platform. In other words they put their money where their mouth is – if no investor buys that asset Lendinvest’s sister company is left holding it “themselves”. For the borrower this means there is no uncertainty as to whether a loan will be funded (whereas on a typical platform they have to wait to see if it gets funded). For the lender its a whole extra dimension of confidence above and beyond “we rate this X” – rather it’s “our sister company has already bought this asset – that’s how much confidence we have in it”. A recent bank line application led to the bank’s Head of Credit saying that Lendinvest’s credit quality procedures (that the bank audited) were better than the bank’s Towards the end Christian explains more about, not just Lendinvest’s history, but also their direction going forwards – in particular their investment in tech to improve deal origination, credit and the time it takes to offer a buy-to-let mortgage (currently around two weeks, hoping to move it to a matter of days (which is of course tremendous compared to the banks processing time)) Opaque Terminology Shakespeare may have been right about the fragrance of roses for more abstract matters naming is everything – the words we use condition our thinking – a point marketers spend years studying in degree courses. If I said to you “do you want to lend money to dozens of folks you have never met so they can splash out on a new car, have a fancy wedding, get a house extension etc, and you will have no security?”, you might think one thing. If I said to you “do you want a team, who are incredibly motivated to make a success out of your investment, and who have got a brilliant credit track record over a decade, including one of the worst recessions ever, to invest your money in consumer finance and get you a return ten times what you get from a bank?”, you might think another. So words are important. What else do we speak and write with? In LFP010 “The 3,000 feet overview of Alternative Finance”, Rupert Taylor mentioned how he dislikes jargon which serves only to (1) form a barrier between insiders and outsiders and (2) a block to understanding. He also mentioned that there is no commonly agreed definitions in the sector (I am sure I saw the FSA include P2P within crowdfunding recently (?!)). Language also (3) leads to groupthink (which is a factor in many FS risk disasters in the past decades/centuries). Peer-to-peer is originally a tech phrase which describe a de-centralised network (in contrast with client-server architecture all “peers” are both “clients” and “servers”). Napster was really peer-to-peer in this sense. If you look up “P2P” on Wikipedia right now it doesn’t have any reference to Alternative Finance! [Note to P2PFA edit that wiki page?! :-)] As if to make matters worse, following on from using phrases like peer-to-peer, the sector is now taking up the (very tech, very VC) term of “marketplace lending”. This is in large part a “valuation play” – “marketplaces” are more highly rated and there are billion dollar IPOs coming in the US .. so the #OldFS hype machine is busy. Now once again I don’t feel that this is a widely comprehensible term, nor do I feel it’s accurate – eBay is a marketplace – which to me means that plenty of folks can come and sell their stuff and plenty of folks can come and buy. We discuss this term – Christian is a fan and I am not. You can form your own opinion Another term we don’t discuss (but it came to me many times when I was when editing the audio) is “exchange” [and coincidentally today I heard Ron Suber President of Prosper describe themselves as “an online exchange for consumer credit” which I thought clear, simple and with the right implications (after all compare and contrast two exchanges – the London Stock Exchange and AIM – it’s clear which is a more reliable market)]. Most importantly I don’t think any single term can cover the disparate models in P2P right now (see below in the Risk comments). For investors my advice is both to dig below any label and not to read too much into any label. “Alternative Finance/Online-lending&borrowing” is something that (a) never existed before (hence no vocabulary to fit it) and (b) is evolving over time (hence a label that worked last year might not next). THE FUTURE – Where the P2P Industry is Heading The US model is much more institutional and “marketplacey” – hedge funds for example being well able to make their own credit decisions (assuming they can “see through” to the asset). The UK has to date been much more of a “savings substitute” design (lower yielding, minimal losses on the top platforms). In the US the market has been heavily regulated (enabling a few platforms to grow very large and their owners very wealthy (sound familiar?)). Lending Club alone is forecast to do perhaps $10bn of business next year – more than the entire UK P2P industry put together. In the UK regulation has been light touch, it’s easy to enter (maybe even “from your bedroom”). Both the government and the London Mayor’s office have been a major part of the 2014 promotion/hype – talking of vocab … take your pick – of Fintech as a whole. The government has been a heavy supporter not just in terms of considering including P2P assets as viable ISA investments but also in terms of investing tax payers money in deals via some platforms. In the UK there are a lot of players ~150 in the P2P Finance Association – even Christian who is full-time in this sector and attends many conferences doesn’t know many of them. A “Goldilocks” growth curve is very important – not too hot, not too cold. P2P is still a tiny portion of the market (eg the UK mortgage market is £1.6trn) and therefore unlikely to be constrained in terms of quality asset acquisition in the near term. So “external” constraints aren’t that significant right now. However internal constraints are always significant – Fintech is not Tech – you are dealing with people’s money. There will be a spectrum across P2P of how automated the process can be – more automatable in consumer-P2P due to big data? less in real estate as one needs “boots on the ground” eg re valuation. Where there is manual intervention – especially around credit (far more common in the UK than in the US) – you can’t “just add another server” – “adding another person” takes longer to do well. To wrap up the show Christian outlines the rosy scenario, the downside scenario and his central scenario – you’ll have to listen to find out the details but his conclusion is “there is a rough ride ahead but the long-term viability of the concept is very real”. Everyone has an important job in deciding how the market evolves. Platforms; regulators/industry associations; the government and last but not least the investors – caveat emptor – plenty of real opportunities out there for great risk;returns – but be wise! Personal Afterthoughts – Rewording the P2P Risk Debate These comments are all my own – even if all being inspired by listening to our conversation. Whilst we touch on a number of these topics in the episode these are my afterthoughts. The industry is very focused (correctly) on credit analysis. However personally – as an outsider (mind you if I am an outsider I wonder what the average member of the public is) – I feel it is less easy to ascertain all the risks the investor takes. In a sense this is a question of evolution. Historically the main platforms have done an excellent job of risk management – I don’t wish to question that for one minute. However going forward – especially given the possible ISA flood – can we be certain that all platforms will do as good a job? My view of FS as a whole is that on the one hand much of #OldFS needs to wake up to an epochal shift. On the other much/most/all of #NewFS needs to get ever more professional/solid/reliable over time. What happens, post ISA-flood when a hundred or more platforms are listed on a consumer “price comparison website”? Hard to see how one avoids a whole tsunami of unsophisticated investors being attracted to the biggest headline rates rather than assessing quality. On a price comparison site one could see headline rates and volumes perhaps. But what about the platform risk/quality? Clearly not all platforms are as strong/good/reliable – you name it – as each other. How would one even assess a simple red/amber/green measure? In LFP006 I discussed this problem over the lack of quality assessment on price comparison sites in the insurance marketplace. Price comparisons websites are just that – they compare the prices of your insurance. They do not compare the quality of the insurance (you only find that out when you claim). That the public is rate-driven we know – witness in 2008 how many people had money with Landsbanki in the UK (as it had had the “best” rates in the market). Few folks are able to assess the risk of banks or platforms. Even banking analysts don’t have a great record of predicting demises .. just to name a few – Barings, Bankers Trust, Lehmans, Landsbanki were all (as far as I recall) unheralded by the analysts. RISK I/II – Asset Risk (Principal) vs Platform Risk (Agent) What the use of the term P2P is trying to convey is that the investor ends up with a direct exposure to the underlying loans. I get that. However there are less obscurantist ways of doing that Arguably the “peer-to-peer” phrase itself distracts one from the central role of the platform. To me this is the most important point – vocabulary apart – AltFinance-borrowing&lending is absolutely not “disintermediated”. The role of the platform as an intermediary/agent is absolutely central, absolutely vital. As Christian says all of the (sensible?) platforms have segregated client bank accounts (and one assumes a settlement mechanism re investing in the loans which means you are not on risk to the platform (not discussed)). So you shouldn’t have a direct cash-asset risk on the platform. However even though you end up with a principal exposure to the specific loan-asset(s) you also have an agency exposure to the platform. What do I mean by agency exposure? Well let’s assume you have a holiday home abroad which you rarely visit. The general solution is to have some agent looking after it for you. And if they do that well your asset remains in good shape. However if the agent goes bust or disappears your asset is more exposed to deterioration as any problems that arise aren’t addressed immediately etc. This agency role is far more vital than say an estate agent – when you buy a house you see it, you decide if you want to buy it and you get an independent survey, valuation etc – so you have little exposure to an estate agent as such (and none post-purchase). All (?) platforms accept their agency responsibilities – and will live or die by their ability to – source quality deals, filter out fraud, service payments flows, chase late payments, work out defaults etc etc etc. Owning assets (secured (0.00001% of 1 Park Lane or unsecured loans (£70 to Mr Bloggs1-100)) is one thing if you have a platform there fulfilling all the agency responsibilities. Even if technically your asset exposure doesn’t change if a platform disappears your asset servicing (“agency”) exposure certainly does. It would become a huuuuuge hassle to start collecting yourself on all those loans etc – in fact in the general case it would be inconceivable (and by definition you couldn’t do it as well as the platform, especially as, in most cases, you would become just one of many many tiny creditors). If we fast forward many years to the first platform to fail, in practice the “book”/”portfolio” would have to be transferred (/sold) to another platform to fulfill the agency duties. Maybe this agency risk is obvious to some of you (it wasn’t to me despite watching a whole host of conference videos!). However as Christian points out whilst the industry (of course) loves volume figures and does publish loss rates, all too often it doesn’t publish and measures of platform profitability or other measures of financial viability/longevity. So how can you assess this agency risk? This is clearly key. Especially now loan terms are increasing (out to 5yrs) I, having worn a number of FS Risk hats, certainly would not invest any money of that term without assessing my agency risk exposure over that time horizon to the platform. And don’t forget these platforms are not covered by the Bank Deposit protection scheme, nor do they have an industry guarantee scheme (unlike eg travel agents and ABTA/ATOL). If you are an investor who is considering investing in all 100++ P2Ps but first you want to select which ones to rule in and rule out, it is essential to measure this “agency risk”. Firstly what is the chance of the platform running into financial problems? I absolutely don’t know myself – but generalising from Fintech as a whole – most Fintech startups are not going to survive. Secondly what is their equivalent of “banks living wills”? That is, in the worst case of the platform falling over, do they have a new agent lined up? I believe in Lendinvest’s case Montello Capital (a related but separate company with experience of loan servicing/agency duties) would step in as the fallback/”safety net” agent. Based on a quick straw poll of P2P websites I just checked “not everyone” (being polite) has such arrangements. Some P2Ps merely have vague comments saying the servicing fee should be enough for you to pay for someone else to service your assets. I am not making these points merely to be critical or to throw rocks at other people’s greenhouses. Rather I am: (a) trying to help lenders understand the risks they are taking and flag up due-diligence issues to consider; and (b) trying to help the evolution of Fintech as a whole, but in this case P2P by flagging up my perception of how to make them even more solid and robust than they are right now. RISK II/II – P2P Two Main Subtypes – YOU select your asset(s) or THEY select your assets Revisiting the vocabulary point – no single term right now meaningfully covers all of Fintech hence the subsectors. Nor does any term now cover all the “P2P” subsector. There are many models within P2P. If we ignore the “shades of grey” and simplify into a black and white schematic we could say that “P2P” (the debt subsector of AltFinance) has bifurcated into two main subgroups. Both approaches are perfectly valid – however they are sufficiently different to explain the fact that no single term fits both. One type of “P2P” is the P2P/You-Select subtype (eg Lendinvest). They are (somewhat) like a marketplace – or perhaps more like a shop that sources all the things it sells. The platform’s main role re principal risk is, like a stock exchange perhaps, to be a quality control on the individual assets “sold in the shop”. The other main subtype one might call P2P/They-Select. They are (somewhat) like a fund (albeit neither structured nor regulated as such). In this case your agency exposure is much greater as they are making your principal investment decisions for you. One key difference with a fund is that in some cases there is no transparency – ie you may legally own a bunch of loans (or rather parts-thereof) but you have no knowledge of them, and no auditing that you would get if you invested in a fund. There are further bells and whistles in that some “P2P-They-Select”s may run provision funds, take out insurance, run “rolling 1mt investments”, have “rate promises”. There is a further agency wrinkle that touches on principal (which we don’t go into) around liquidity – how easy is it on various platforms to get your cash back before the term of the asset? The agency role there gets very close to your principal risk bone if you need to rely on the agent to (effectively) re-sell your asset. One for another day – and I have written faaaaar too much lol – am sure next to none of you made it this far – but wearing my old bloodhound hat I would want to sniff some of those quite hard to ensure that principal risk on any given platform hasn’t slipped back in. Did anyone read all of this? Say hi if you did
