From Tucker Carlson to Johnny Depp, a celebrity bromance is the must-have accessory for modern dictators, says Marina Hyde (1m50); the Libertines on feuds, friendship and their tortured reunion by Simon Hattenstone (9m03); and how habituation, a simple behavioural trick, can help you experience less pain and more pleasure by Cass Sunstein and Tali Sharot (35m49).
Drogues, brouilles, chaos, arrestations… The Libertines se séparent. Fantastischen Vier, Seeed, Deichkind, The Babyshambles.

GUEST OVERVIEW: Todd DiCiurcio is an American artist who lives and works in NJ, USA. His drawings and paintings are created within, and respond to the corporeal context of the staged "live" performance and special event with acts such as Mac DeMarco, Broken Social Scene, Post Malone, The Rolling Stones, Ty Segall, New Order, Cage The Elephant, Blondie, Morrissey, Dope Lemon, Guided By Voices, Kings Of Leon, Dinosaur Jr, Babyshambles, On Broadway with Sweeney Todd, and In The Heights among others. Concurrently, his observed studio work addresses the exo-distortions inherent in the patterns of displacement and excess strewn across American Society. Finding truth in portraiture, he utilizes technology both spiritual and psychoanalytical to create images that become words, stories, bands, armies of personal mythology. Striving against ordinary, DiCiurcio seeks miracle in the spectacle.

The Fantasy Life of Poetry and Crime“.

The Fantasy Life of Poetry & Crime”.
Gig season AKA the best season is upon us! Tune in this time out as a long awaited interview with the superb Katy J Pearson - one of the best voices in British music - as our BigSmoke:InFocus Artist. Katy opens up about her country influences, how Joe Lycett sliding into her DMs ended up in a music video, finally touring 2020's sublime debut 'Return' and why cows are what it's all about! In the co-host hot seat this week, Luke is joined by Joey Julliard - bassist for Honey Moon - fresh from supporting FUR out on their UK tour. Joey tells all about the buzz of being back out on the road, as well as how FUR are shaking live sets by getting the crown involved in a raffle midway through the set. He tells all about his ventures with the intergalactic gig space Close Encounter Club, rehearsing as a 17 year-old next door to Babyshambles and how he found himself filming with one of the UK's hottest bands right now, Wet Leg. Gig reviews of TV Priest, Kasabian & Paul Weller are peppered in nicely for y'all, along with a blast of CloseUp:60Seconds with Rob Castelino from Castells, fresh from the studio! The Orchid Room er aktuelle med singlen "Be The Light" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktPCoc_rKpo).

Join independent artists Narcy and Lowkey for a wide-ranging conversation celebrating the release of Narcy's debut book Text Messages. ---------------------------------------------------- Independent hip-hop artists Narcy and Lowkey on art, technology, empire, and the struggle to survive the end of consumer capitalism. ---------------------------------------------------- Text Messages is the first multi-genre collection by Montreal-based Iraqi hip-hop artist, activist, and professor Yassin “Narcy” Alsalman. Composed entirely on a smartphone during air travel and married to artwork from comrades, Narcy's writing speaks of the existential crises experienced by diasporic children of war before and during imperialism in the age of the Internet. Narcy 's verses span the space between hip-hop and manifesto, portraying a crumbling, end-stage capitalist society, visions for a new reality, and exposes the myth of multiculturalism in post-9/11 North America. The wordsmith hollows and transmogrifies the grotesque excess of the West by juxtaposing McLife with images of death, destruction, and trauma in the East. From the depths of apathetic consumerism arises a voice of spiritual self-realization that explodes the misrepresented, mythical monolith of Islam in the West and with the rubble builds healing through intelligent resistance and radical love. ---------------------------------------------------------- Real name Yassin Alsalman, Narcy is a musician, director, professor, writer, and actor. He teaches a hip-hop production class and a cultural study of rap and politics at Concordia University. He is the cofounder of WeAreTheMedium, a culture point for publishing, media, and the arts. He currently resides in Montreal, has his heart in the Arab world, and is grounded on planet Earth. Most importantly, he is a father of two. Lowkey is a hip hop artist and political campaigner. He has worked with Immortal Technique , Wretch 32, Akala, Dead Prez and Outlawz. He is part of the super group Mongrel alongside members of the Arctic Monkeys, Babyshambles and Reverend And The Makers. How do you go from being one of the musical sidekicks to the world's most notorious rock star Pete Doherty to a psychotherapist to the stars? This is the question we put to sometime Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek in this episode. Adam invited Rick down to his clinic in central London for a good old chinwag about his unusual career change and some classic tales from his days in Babyshambles. He talks about how he joined the band, recorded a couple of their albums and toured the world, before being unceremoniously kicked out by Pete, seemingly on a whim. Adam also gives us the latest on his solo project Roses Kings Castles and discusses whether Babyshambles will ever perform together again. Elsewhere in the episode, Rick and guest co-host Jamie Fullerton question how a musical written from the point of view of Michael Jackson's fingerless white glove could work and run the rule over Tyson Fury's tilt at the Xmas One spot with Robbie Williams. In the early 2000s – post-Britpop – an influx of indie bands emerged, beginning with New York based The Strokes. This paved the way for the Hives, The Vines, The Soundtrack of our Lives, and then a host of British bands – the most popular of all of them, The Libertines, as fronted by Pete Doherty and Carl Barat. Around 2003/4, following Pete and Carl's falling out in relation to drug abuse, Pete formed side project Babyshambles, which took off in its own right. After a turbulent start with drummer Gemma leaving the band, Adam Ficek – previously a musician in the band The White Sport – was brought on board as Babyshambles' drummer. My overriding memory of these early 2000s years was the extent to which drug use and litigious activity by rock stars were getting equal prominence in the press (if not more) as the music itself. While Britpop spread a message of invincibility, togetherness and youth, there seemed to be darker, sinister undertones connected to the drug culture around the 2000s bands which, for me, started to become synonymous with that time and which led to a noticeable isolation, separation and exclusivity within the indie music scene, spilling out into the behaviour and attitudes of the public fan base. I observed this shift acutely while at university when I was working a part-time job in a ticket box office of an indie club in my late teens. I really wondered about this phenomenon and welcomed the opportunity to speak to Adam Ficek of Babyshambles who was in his musical ascendancy around this time. On speaking to Adam, I became fascinated by his trajectory into the psychotherapeutic world after experiences with Babyshambles. I was keen to hear about his own understanding of how his turbulent upbringing led to deep emotional wounds that got re-triggered within the rock music industry climate of the time. We talk about that upbringing, his lifestyle on the road within Babyshambles, his exit from the band and subsequent healing process that led him to a new music journey and academic career in music psychology and psychotherapeutic practice. Adam Ficek is probably best known as the drummer in Pete Docherty's post-Libertines band Babyshambles. But as well as a very successful music career, he's also a trained psychotherapist, and about to embark on a PhD. Adam and Suzi have a wide-ranging discussion in this episode of Say Why to Drugs, that takes in why Adam wanted to become first a musician, then a psychotherapist, whether musicians might be particularly at risk of developing poor mental health or substance use problems, and why that might be. Music industry researcher and vocal coach Lucy Heyman talks to psychotherapist and Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek about starting out in music and coping with the transition into a high profile band and why access to support in the music industry is so essential. Lucy also talks to Help Musicians’ Head of Health and Welfare Joe Hastings about the common challenges faced by musicians, the importance of maintaining health in the music industry as well as how and where to get support when you need it. It's time for our second episode made up purely of Ko-Fi donations! Thanks again to everyone who contributed, it's another terrific mix of genre and era. This week we're discussing Enter Shikari's The Spark, a PJ Harvey classic, Babyshambles' sophomore album, and Portico Quartet's latest.
An ending fitting for the start. In part 2 of our Libertines double header we find out what happened after the release of Up the Bracket and follow Pete's descent into heroin and crack hell, and ultimately prison. We also look at the birth of Babyshambles, the reunion and freedom gig and discover what a steeplejack does. We mourn the ultimate dissolution of the band but not before releasing their second wondrous album of which we gift you a track by track analysis. Hurry up Mrs Brown, I can feel it coming down and it won't take none too long!

On this special episode of The StageLeft Podcast ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week, we welcome Psychotherapist & former Babyshambles writer and drummer, Adam Ficek. As well as an impressive solo output as ‘Roses Kings Castles', touring the world as a celebrated DJ, Adam now works to support those in the music industry through Music and Mind, which is established to provide support, therapy, consultancy, and wellbeing in the music industry. Adam talks candidly of how his own experiences led to the creation of Music and Mind, and the importance of duty of care within the industry: ‘…one minute you are at the top of the game and the next minute you're not, you're struggling for support with all these different things which can really be quite overwhelming… the pressures are innately growing, for young bands especially…' We hear the most common root cause behaviours of those that are coming to him and what specific actions musicians can take right now, the effect on creative and artistic output, how social media is a potent force for disabling people's mental health, and the conundrum of being commoditised with-in the industry: ‘…if you are going to step into the arena of commoditisation, then you're going to be a commodity, that's how it is…I did have a choice, no-one had a gun to my head saying ‘you must stay in this industry…' Adam also talks about what differentiates the Babyshambles from the Libertines, the unique approach young songwriters could learn from Pete Doherty, and the time the chief Babyshamble was babysat by two ex-military: ‘…Every other week he'd be nicked for drugs and it was part of a court order… so rather than sending him down, he would have these two ex-military guys babysit him for the recording of ‘Down in Albion'. It was a very messy time for everyone I think…' Adam talks with affection about legendary drummer and teacher Bob Armstrong, why he no longer thinks of playing Wembley and Glastonbury as momentous occasions, and being in The La's for two whole days: ‘…I think I was in The La's twice, once was for about a day…' This episode is in keeping with our ethos to lift the lid of the music industry. Thanks to Adam, we hear a side of it that is not often spoken about yet has an ever-increasing impact from the lowest to the highest echelons of the industry. Inspelat 16 juli 2013. Trashing the hotel room, a cameo from Pete's son, impromptu singing, this interview with the Libertines in Ibiza is ace, and mental!
They're the latest Manchester sensations - swaggering rockers with more than a hint of Oasis about them. No wonder Alias Kid were snapped up by music maven Alan McGee, the svengali who gave Oasis to the world! As band manager and the boss of Creation Records, McGee has been associated with some of the biggest names in British independent rock, including Oasis, the Libertines, Primal Scream and The Jesus & Mary Chain. Now he joins Garry with his latest protégées who play live in our studio. As ever the lively chat is interspersed with the best new sounds around proved by the Ming City Rockers, the Amphetameanies, Shotgun House, The Crunch, 1Eye, Iron Chin, Last Seen Laughing, The Cundeez, Bambu Sauce, Knock Off, 3 Stone Monkey, the Kombi Killers, Phoenix 23, The Black Bullets, and the not so contemporary music of Jimmy Parramore. They won our coveted track of the year award on our last show, and now the Bar Stool Preachers are playing live in the Hungry & Hunted studio. The hot young Brighton band are as bracing as a 6am plunge in the English Channel. Influenced by 2-Tone and streetpunk, the Preachers are in the vanguard of the new south coast sound that is as passionate as it is authentic and melodic. A proper alternative to mainstream pop pap. Other great bands this edition include Alan McGee’s new signing Alias Kid who are latest of Manchester’s swaggering terrace pop likely lads. Will they follow Oasis into the charts? McGee certainly thinks so. On Trial, Reading punks with brain and punch Christine ‘Sugary’ Staple, with her ‘Original Rude Girl Sound’ New Hampshire’s granite-hard Iron Chin, where streetpunk meets arena rock Punk veterans Sonny Vincent & Spite, including members of the Damned, the Sex Pistols and the Stooges Glasgow’s boisterous Amphetameanies who marry 2-Tone with 1977 energy and backstreet attitudes. New Mod heroes The Spitfires from Watford X-Ray Junction from mid-Wales with their addictive brand of melodic punk Adelaide’s ballsy indie-punks Young Offenders Vasteraz from Sweden, who have been described as Cock Sparrer meet Perkele UK punk veterans The Boys currently enjoying a creative second wind The Crunch with their blend of sinewy power pop and top drawer musicianship Hard-hitting Texan streetpunks Sniper 66 And the extraordinary Pimpmane with his fresh and endearingly bonkers ‘Swag’ sound. This is are the sound of the streets, the poison in the pop machine. Can you take it? For full track listing, see the show notes. So here it is... our special, annual Song Of The Year Show... in which Garry and guests review the very best tracks submitted to us in the past year and - without fear or favour - pick the most excellent example of indie music in the history of the universe. Or something like that. Garry special guest panel comprises rock writer and musician Johnny Wah-Wah and London Mod icon Shona “Wattsie” Watts. And Mik Whitnall drops by to deliver a live set while the judges are out in the jury room. Altogether, a show of superlatives! All we can hope is that 2015 produces songs of equal excellence. Plus there are great numbers from The Droogettes, Tankus The Henge, Daveit Ferris, the City Saints, Ross Harper, Model Society, the Brassknuckle Boys and much more. She's the love child of Marilyn Monroe and Ziggy Stardust, and Kiria Le Pink is simply one of the most exciting artists on the UK's newly-revitalized rockabilly scene. Working with Camden's legendary producer Phil 'Doyley' Doyle the North London singer-songwriter is intent on making one of the earliest forms of rock'n'roll vital and sexy again. Kiria and two of her Missy Le Pink crew join Garry in the studio for a lively Xmas/New Year show. And as usual the playlist mixes and mashes new songs from old veterans like The Boys with the fresh sounds of Manchester's next big thing The Backhanders. Plus there are great numbers from The Droogettes, Tankus The Henge, Daveit Ferris, the City Saints, Ross Harper, Model Society, the Brassknuckle Boys and much more. As usual, the show also includes new music from the hottest new bands around - for full track listing, see the show notes. Mik Whitnall is best-known as the lead guitarist with Pete Doherty’s Babyshambles, but before that he cut his teeth in the rated Ska band 100 Men. Here Mik talks about his new Ska project 1969 OK who will be on the road next year. Also joining Garry in a packed show are Chris Pope of Pope, one of the best songwriters to come out of the 1979 Mod Renewal, Damon Coles, who performs live in the studio, and via Skype 2-Tone legend Rhoda Dakar. As usual, the show also includes new music from the hottest new bands around - for full track listing, see the show notes.
