On this episode, we celebrate Women's History Month with fiction and nonfiction about women's history, one of the prompts on the Winter-Spring 2024 Books & Bites Bingo reading challenge. From a graphic novel about Soviet women fighter pilots to a page-turning book about the evolution of female bodies, we'll show you that there's nothing dull about women's history. Michael's PickThe Night Witches is a graphic novel written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Russ Braun. During World War II, the Soviet Union formed the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, recruiting women to fly night missions, bombing the invading Nazis as they cut deeper into Russia. The Nazis came to dub them the “Nachthexen” or “Night Witches.”The novel follows Anna Kharkova, a fictional Night Witch. It opens as Anna is recruited to join the 588th regiment with her friend and gunner, Zoya. If you're a World War II history buff or a fan of military history, you might enjoy this powerful story.Pairing: A glass of Kompot, homemade fruit juice enjoyed by many Russian and Ukrainian families. Carrie's PickEve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolutionby Cat Bohannon upends popular and scientific belief to argue that female bodies have been the primary agents of humans' evolutionary change. Bohannon builds her case over nine well researched and lively chapters: Milk, Womb, Perception, Legs, Tools, Brain, Voice, Menopause, and Love.Pairing: Chocolate Covered Frozen Bananas in honor of our matriarchal primate relatives.Jacqueline's PickThe Lovely War by Julie Berry tells the love stories of two WWI couples through the frame of the Goddess of Love's own love story. She seeks to answer the age-old question: "Why are Love and War eternally drawn to one another?" but her quest for a conclusion that will satisfy her jealous husband, Hephaestus, uncovers a multi-threaded tale of prejudice, trauma, and music, revealing that War is no match for the power of Love.Pairing: The war-time treat Lemon Sponge Cake. It's made with rice flour instead of wheat, which was in short supply during World War I. Spies, intrigue and forgeries, oh my! You're gonna Juan-a hear the whole story of super-spy Juan Pujol Garcia. He worked his butt off to build a spy ring, operated as a double-agent, spied on multiple sides of multiple conflicts, and was an early example of an expert at fake news. Once called "the best actor in the world", come find out what all his secret agent names were and tell us your favorite! RIP Agent Spoon.... We stick around WWII to tell the tale of the 588th Bomber Regiment in Soviet Russia, also known as the Night Witches. These ladies kept swooping into Alanna's orbit so she had to share with us about these amazing women. Armed with little more than paper planes and pencils, they efficiently terrorized the German troops flying their night sorties, that they started calling them the Nachthexen, or Night Witches. Did they secretly have some super spy injections that gave them night vision? or was that just a rumor the enemy clung on to in order to explain how freaking good they were. We bet you can guess. Let's celebrate the white Lily of Stalingrad and all her sestras (sisters)! On October 8th, 1941, with Stalingrad surrounded, Leningrad besieged, and the Nazis making new gains on Russian territory every day, Joseph Stalin ordered the creation of three new Air Force regiments... the first female aviation military regiments in world history. Led by famed civilian aviator Marina Raskova, these young women, most of whom were between the ages of 17 and 26, would have to transform from flight hobbyists to killer soldiers. The 588th Night Bombers Regiment would earn the nickname “the Night Witches” from the German soldiers they terrorized in the darkness. Flying no-frills wooden planes with ill-fitting uniforms and no parachutes, most runs would happen with three planes, the first two meant to draw attention and enemy fire, with the third being the one to drop the bomb. What made this so dangerous is the fact that the third plane, to avoid detection, would have to cut their engines and glide over their target as quietly as possible. Despite the danger, the Night Witches regiment alone would fly around 30,000 sorties and have 23 of their pilots awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union— and they would definitively help change the tide of the war against the Nazis. Orna Merchant learns how, during World War Two, a desperate Soviet Union created three all-female aerial combat units. The most celebrated of these was the 588th Night Bomber Regiment. Using Polikarpov Po-2 wooden biplanes, as the aviators approached their target they would cut their engines and glide in to drop their bombs. The eerie sight and sound of this – added to the discovery of them having all women crews - led German forces to nickname them ‘Nachthexen' - the Night Witches.

The Night Witches were an all-female pilot regiment who flew under the cover of darkness in bare-bones plywood planes, bombing Nazis during WWII. - The planes the Night Witches operated made whooshing sounds similar to a sweeping broom, leading to the Germans coining their nickname, Nachthexen or Night Witches. - These women flew in harsh cold conditions risking hypothermia using planes originally designed for agricultural purposes – not for battling Nazis in a massive world war. They also lacked parachutes and other common aviation equipment such as radios and radars. Further, they had no defense capabilities onboard… In a firefight, they could only escape, unable to retaliate. - Despite their disadvantages, the Night Witches were a formidable force and were like terrifying ghosts maneuvering through the night. Their engines would idle, allowing them to silently coast over enemy infrastructure before unleashing their explosives. - Overall, the Night Witches were a thorn in the Nazis plans, constantly destroying key infrastructure such as railway lines as well as providing crucial supplies to friendly troops. - Herein we outline the history of the Night Witches, discuss their tactics and strategy, the equipment they used, and the key battles/operations they were involved in. This lesser-known pilot regiment was truly brave and inspiring. It was a pleasure to research this one. - What say you?
In this episode, we opted to cover Bad Bitches again. We accidentally did a themed episode outside of that as we're both talking about female fighters during WW2 in the Soviet Union. Roya talks about how the sound of sweeping brooms haunted the dreams of Nazis because of the Nachthexen, or Nightwitches, an all female night bombing brigade. Casey talks about Lyudmila "Lady Death" Pavlichenko, the incredible woman who still holds the highest confirmed death count of any female sniper.
The Soviet Union’s WW2 regiment of all women pilots flew over 24,000 missions. They specialized in harassment bombings of the enemy. They earned the nickname the Night Witches from the German’s for their demoralizing tactics of low flying, silent, night bombings. Flying small, 2 seat, wooden planes only large enough to carry 2 bombs, they would deliver their payloads sometimes 18 times a night, reeking havoc on the German offensive, sleep, and psyche

In 1941, Germany surprisingly attacked the Soviet Union. Through the work of Marina Raskova, three regiments were created, all entirely staffed by women. The 588th Night Bomber Regiment bombed the Germans in the darkness of night. They did their job so well; the Germans began calling them Nachthexen, the Night Witches.

Today (tonight?) we’re talking about a chilling chapter from flight history— Night Bomber Regiment 588. They were a group of about 80 Soviet women who flew combat missions during World War II. Led by famous Russian pilot Marina Raskova, these fearless aviatrixes would fly across German lines under cover of darkness and drop bombs from their WWII bi-planes, striking targets on the ground and terror in the hearts of their enemies. They became so feared by the German army that they were dubbed the die Nachthexen, or the Night Witches. This isn’t a lame Halloween story, this is badass history.
The 588th Night Bomber Regiment didn't have the best equipment, and they didn't have the best planes. What this all-female bomber regiment did have, however, was unstoppable ambition, brilliant strategies and dozens of fearless pilots. Listen in to learn more about the rise of the terrifying force the German soldiers called die Nachthexen -- the Night Witches. So feared were these pilots, flying almost silently over the German positions at night to attack any movement or light, that the Nazis called them Night Witches. With just the wind whistling through the wires of their old Po-2 biplanes, again and again the brave young women of the Soviet Air Force flew with such skill that many were made Heroes of the Soviet Union. James, Lacey, and Carrie review Night Witches from Bully Pulpit Games. Night Witches is a Powered by the Apocalypse RPG where you play the Russian airwomen of the 588th during WW2. Dubbed the Nachthexen or Night Witches by the German army because they bombed German troops during the night. Night Witches isn't just a WW2 pilot RPG, your characters go on bombing raids but it also focuses on the relationships between the pilots and their struggles with the tragedies of war, dealing with the political police and struggling to keep their planes in the air. Night Witches was a German nickname for these female military aviators of the U.S.S.R. during the Great Patriotic War (WWII). They wore the name with honor and were the bane of Eastern Front Nazis!
