Paul's relationship with Jewish law is notoriously difficult to grasp. In this episode, Dr. Matthew Novenson joins the podcast and proposes a new interpretive framework to make sense of the prolific apostle—Paul saw himself as a Jew, not at the end of Judaism, but at the end of history. Dr. Novenson is a Professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary and the author of “Paul and Judaism at the End of History.” In this conversation we will examine Paul's views on justification, legalism, and chauvinism, as well as his criticism of Jewish conversion for Gentiles. These perspectives help explain some of the tensions and seeming contradictions in his letters as he addressed communities he believed were on the cusp of a radical transformation to a new era of human history. — Takeaways — ► Paul's view of himself and Judaism: Paul considered himself a Jew and did not see his teachings as a departure from Judaism but rather as a part of its historical progression. ► Paul's imminent eschatology and its implications: Paul's belief in the imminent end of the age and the coming of the new creation heavily influenced his views on the law, justification, and conversion. ► The interpretation of "justification": The concept of justification in Paul's letters is interpreted as a "transfer term" referring to the transfer into the new creation rather than merely a forensic declaration of righteousness. ► Paul's opponents: Contrary to the common assumption that Paul's opponents were Jewish, Dr. Novenson suggests that they were actually Gentile converts advocating for proselyte circumcision. ► Paul's "legalism": Dr. Novenson challenges the traditional view of Paul as being anti-legalistic by pointing out instances in his letters where he sets strict standards and prohibitions, indicating a form of "legalism." — Chapters — (00:00) Introduction to Dr. Matthew Novenson (06:30) Galatians 1:3 – Did Paul abandon Judaism? Send us a Text Message.Welcome back Soap Fiends !!What happens when professional aspirations collide with personal biases? On this episode of Soap Loar we dive headfirst into the dramatic world of Dynasty's favorite "ism's". Sexism. Chauvinism, Nepotism ,you name it! Season 4, Episode 7, titled "Tracy." We dissect the internal struggle and palpable tension as Tracy's dream job at Denver Carrington is snatched away by Blake in favor of his far less-qualified wife, Krystal. Tracy's frustrations explode in a moment of raw emotion, signaling the start of a riveting new conflict. Jett, our host, can't help but voice a growing disillusionment with Dynasty, hinting at a possible pivot to other prime-time heavyweights like Falcon Crest and Knots Landing. This episode promises a deep exploration into Tracy's professional heartbreak and the broader shifts in the soap opera landscape of the '80s.This episode is riddled with HR violations as Mark and Adam both have to be reminded that "No means no, not "no means turn it up a notch"The intrigue doesn't stop there. We untangle the deceptive manipulations of Adam, Blake, and Alexis, spotlighting Adam's moral quandary as he attempts to frame his own mother for poisoning Jeff. The tension escalates with Kirby's suspicions and confrontations, adding multiple layers to the storyline. The power dynamics within Denver Carrington are questioned, particularly around Crystal's unexpected appointment. We scrutinize her motivations and the office dynamics she disrupts. As always, our sage advice to our listeners: stay vigilant, keep your remote handy, stay hydrated, and let the drama play out on your TV screens, not in your lives. Don't miss this engaging discussion filled with treachery, corporate drama, and tangled loyalties.

There's Only One Man Who Can Save the World From US Dangerous Chauvinism and Hegemony
There was this popular video from the Daily Show where Desi talks about how she's trying to understand the male experience better by acting like a man: getting paid more for no reason, interrupting people more, mansplaining, and gaslighting via invalidating the other person's feelings and telling them to calm down & don't act crazy. And while it is funny, it's taking on a serious topic – misogyny. In today's episode, I have a special guest who is doing ground-breaking work on the topic of a VERY specific type of domestic abuse. She has named this Betrayal Violence. And we're going to dig into not only what misogyny is, but unapologetically talk about internalized misogyny. If you're new here, I wanted to encourage you to go to my website and sign up for my newsletter – that way you can be in the know about any conferences I'm speaking at, specials I'm running, or new programs I'm releasing. And whether you're new here or been with me since the beginning, I'm so glad you're here. Bio: My guest today is Hope Ray, of the Betrayal Violence Institute (website)Story Time: Sarah and Hope discuss the difference between misogyny, chauvinism and sexism, and get curious about how misogyny and internalize misogyny show up - and, most importantly, how we can unknowingly perpetuate it. Chauvinism: the unreasonable belief in the superiority or dominance of one's own group or people, who are seen as strong and virtuous, while others are considered weak, unworthy, or inferior. Sexism: the belief that the members of one sex are less intelligent, able, skilful, etc. than the members of the other sex, especially that women are less able than men Internalized misogyny is a subconscious way of degrading yourself and other women based on sexist ideas of how women should act, dress or speak.

In the second verse of Parashat Beshalach (the flight from Egypt and the crossing of the Sea of Reeds), the Torah states that the Israelites fled fully armed. I explore the traditional commentaries on why, and connect this to the haftarah (story of Deborah and Yael) and to the intelligence failures in Israel caused by male chauvinism.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: 4. A Moral Case for Evolved-Sapience-Chauvinism, published by Roger Dearnaley on November 24, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. Part 4 of AI, Alignment, and Ethics. This will probably make more sense if you start with Part 1. A society can use any criteria it likes for membership. The human moral intuition for fairness only really extends to "members of the same primate troupe as me". Modern high-tech societies have economic and stability incentives to extend this to every human in the entire global economic system, and the obvious limiting case for that is the entire planet, or if we go interplanetary, the entire solar system. However, there is a concern that obviously arbitrary rules for membership of the society might not be stable under challenges like self-reflection or self-improvement by an advanced AI. One might like to think that if someone attempted to instill in all the AIs the rule that the criterion for being a citizen with rights was, say, descent from William Rockefeller Sr. (and hadn't actually installed this as part of a terminal goal, just injected it into the AI's human value learning process with a high prior), sooner or later as sufficiently smart AI would tell them "that's extremely convenient for your ruling dynasty, but doesn't fit the rest of human values, or history, or biology. So it would be nice to have a criterion that makes some logical sense. Not necessarily a "True Name" of citizenship, but at least a solid rationally-defensible position with as little wiggle room as possible. I'd like to propose what I think is one: "an intelligent agent should be assigned moral worth if it is (or primarily is, or is a functionally-equivalent very-high-accuracy emulation of) a member of sapient species whose drives were produced by natural selection. (This moral worth may vary if its drives or capabilities have been significantly modified, details TBD.)" The argument defending this is as follows: Living organisms have homeostasis mechanism: they seek to maintain aspects of their bodies and environment in certain states, even when (as is often the case) those are not thermodynamic equillibria. Unlike something weakly agentic like a thermostat, they are self propagating complex dynamic systems, and natural selection ensures that the equillibria they maintain are ones important to that process: they're not arbitrary, easily modified, or externally imposed, like those for a thermostat. If you disturb any these equillibria they suffer, and if you disturb it too much, they die. ("Suffer" and "die" here should be regarded as technical terms in Biology, not as moral terms.) Living things have a lot of interesting properties (which is why Biology is a separate scientific field): for example, they're complex, self sustaining, dynamic processes that us evolutionary design algorithms. Also, humans generally think they're neat (at least unless the organism is prone to causing the human suffering). 'Sapient' is doing a lot of work in that definition, and its not currently scientifically a very well defined term. A short version of the definition that I mean here might be "having the same important social/technological properties that on Earth are currently unique to Homo sapiens, but are not inherently unique". A more detailed definition would be "a species with the potential capability to transmit a lot more information from one generation to the next by cultural means than just by genetic mean". This is basically the necessary requirement for a species to become technological. A species that hasn't yet developed technology, but has this capability, still deserves moral worth. For comparison, we've tried teaching human (sign) languages to chimps, gorillas, and even dogs, and while they're not that bad at this, they clearly lack the level of mental/linguistic/social...

In this Weekend Chit-Chat, we discuss: How the Klan of 1920s used mainstream acceptance and the mantle of Christianity to push their agenda in the center of American life, and we ask how the descendants of that group, like the Proud Boys, have altered those tactics in ways that seem radically different on the surface but maybe aren't so different after all. We talk absurd memes, the "it's just a joke!" defense, and tapping into pop culture references to appeal to the modern mainstream. But, hey, soccer! Soccer's good!
This was a ramble on my phone. I hope you enjoy. Back to our normal programming this week. If you enjoyed this, let me know. I can record others as they come up!
Father's Day is a great day to celebrate and honour all of the fathers out there. But it's also a good day to reflect on what it is to be a father and a man in our society. As much as "it's a man's world," men suffer the effects of chauvinism too and if we want to break the cycle of it, it starts (in part) with dads. Happy Father's Day everyone!

And of course, we'll debate which of the six brothers is our ultimate favorite. But we don't stop there – we'll also dig into the movie's underlying themes around romance and marriage, including some of the more questionable attitudes portrayed.Join us as we tackle Adam's objectifying attitude toward women, his leathery fringe outfit, and how the movie reflects his chauvinistic views. Teena Purohit's new book Sunni Chauvinism and the Roots of Muslim Modernism (Princeton University Press, 2023) maps how various Muslim modernists from the 19th to the 20th centuries used their Sunni normativity to construct social and political boundaries around conceptions of tawhid or Islamic unity. The book distinctively focuses on how Muslim modernists such as canonical figures like Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, Muhammad ‘Abduh, Rashid Rida and many others, focused on communities such as Shi‘as, Ismailis, Ahmadis, and Bahai's in their activist and intellectual projects that aspired for a singular unified Islam against encroaching western modernity. For Muslim modernists who were anxious to reclaim a “lost unity” of Islam that existed in the past and believed could be achieved again in the future (though lacking in their time), non-Sunni groups, like Ahmadis for Muhammad Iqbal or esoteric groups for Rashid Rida, became communities that received disparaging attention and intolerant attitudes that led to a particular Sunni chauvinism, Purohit argues. And as such, this obsession with unity (tawhid) and the privileging of Sunnism that went with it was found in all forms of Muslim modernism. This book then invites a rethinking of our conceptualization of Muslim modernism in light of these thinkers approaches to esoteric (i.e., Sufi) and Shi‘a groups who were viewed as problematic for the social and political goal of tawhid. This accessible book will be of interest to those who think and write on Muslim modernism and non-Sunni movements in Islam. It will also be a great teaching resource for undergraduate and graduate classes. Shobhana Xavier is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Queen's University. In this episode we welcome J. Moufawad-Paul back to the podcast. Previously we had him along with Alyson Escalante and Devin Zane Shaw to talk about On Necrocapitalism a collectively authored book they all worked on together along with some other authors. For today's episode we are focused on J. Moufawad-Paul's latest book Politics In Command: A Taxonomy of Economism. This book seeks to understand what economism is, how it is deployed through socialist analyses, and the ways in which various categories (economy, politics, class, practice, revolution, etc) are mobilized and classified according to its imaginary. Today we talk about a range of topics related to this book, including what economism is, ways it manifests, and related issues like workerism, the concept of the labor aristocracy, and arguments around so-called identity politics. We also get into a little discussion around Marx's model of Capital, what Samir Amin called “actually existing capitalism” vs “imaginary capitalism,” and Cedric Robinson's idea of racial capitalism. And relatedly we talk about why class is not an identity, but rather as Moufawad-Paul puts it “class comes cloaked in the messiness of social relations.” Along the way JMP debunks some conspiratorial understandings of how capitalism works and how the ruling class reproduces itself. And we get into discussion of what Moufawad-Paul argues is the role of the vanguard party as an interventionist party that helps the working class understand itself as a combative class struggling for the overthrow of capitalism, rather than just fighting for immediate material gains in order to defend against the ravages of austerity. As we mention in the show, this book is available through Foreign Languages Press, we will include a link to that in the show notes, as well as to several of Moufawad-Paul's other books, writings and interventions. Happy New Year to those of you who live under a Gregorian calendar. We have a goal for January of adding 31 patrons to keep up with attrition and hopefully continue to build a little bit as well. Alyson and Breht reflect on the recent online stir caused by "MAGA Communism" and analyze the ideas of some of its main represenatives and proponents. Together they discuss and clarify core marxist concepts, criticize and explain the specific errors being made, shine light on its intellectual influences, explore its connection to previous iterations in american history (like the movement that formed around Lyndon LaRouche), laugh at the extremely predictable response they recieved from Trump supporters, and then they reflect on what it all means and what we can learn from it.
