He told 6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett Australia has gone through "a hell of a lot in the past two years" and the Liberals and Nationals needed to form a pathway forward for the Coalition to be successful at the next election in 2025. "Peter Dutton and myself will have to work collaboratively together... we can't win in isolation, the Liberals can't win in isolation... there will some severe lessons," he said. The peaceful, western-dominated world order - secured by the victors in world War 2 and an incalculable cost - is showing signs of fraying. Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and Communist China's global ambitions may have already propelled us into a new era of global strategic conflict - what is at stake is nothing less than the cultural and strategic dominance of Eurasia and the Pacific and possibly the world.
In this Watercooler Conversation, John Anderson and Nick Cater ask if today's Australians, Brits, Canadians and Americans ready for what lies ahead. Will they find the courage - if it is needed - to stand up in the defence of their country? Or has the decline in values - and possibly character - turned the West into a force that lacks the will to defend itself? John Anderson was Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Nationals Party from 1999 to 2005. text by Sam Clench and Charis Chang, news.com.auFormer deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce will challenge Michael McCormack for the leadership of the Nationals Party today. The former Nationals leader received a huge boost after frontbencher and Nationals Minister Matt Canavan sensationally quit Cabinet overnight to support Mr Joyce in today’s spill. In a statement, Mr Canavan said he had offered his resignation because “I have come to the view that we need change in the Nationals Party leadership to effectively fight for regional Australia”.“It is my view that forthright leadership from the Nationals Part is needed more than ever,” he said.Mr Canavan’s shock announcement came just hours after Queensland Nationals MP Llew O’Brien announced he would move a motion to spill the leadership at today’s party room meeting and will back Mr Joyce to become deputy PM again.Mr Joyce confirmed yesterday morning that he would stand if both positions, for the deputy leadership and leadership of the Nationals, were put to a vote.“If there is a spill I will stand. It is entirely up to them if they wish to spill,” Mr Joyce told the ABC.“A spill is a real option but not a certainty.”Mr Joyce appeared on Channel 7’s Sunrise program to remove any doubt about his intentions.“If there is a spill on I will put my hand up,” he said.“Obviously after a spill, there is technically no leader. That is a right in a Westminster system of government. It is up to others if there is a spill.“I believe that I’ve done the job before. Every seat we’ve got is one I’ve won at the previous election. But I’ll leave that up to my colleagues, they can make the call.”“Have you been told that they will make the call for a spill?” host David Koch asked.“Well I’m going to leave that up to them, Kochie,” Mr Joyce said.“No, you must know though. You must have some sort of political stooges in the party who’ve said, ‘Mate, we’re going to call for a spill, are you going to run?’” Koch said.“If they choose to do it, they choose to do it. I never put a certainty on anything. I’ve said every time people have asked me, if there’s a vacancy I will stand. And I’ll leave it up to my colleagues to make a choice of what they wish.”“Yeah but going on national TV the day before a party room meeting like this is pretty clear that you’re putting your hand up,” Koch’s fellow host Natalie Barr pointed out.“Going on national TV on a Monday on Sunrise is what I do every week, and of course it’d be more odd if I all of a sudden didn’t appear,” said Mr Joyce.“But it’s what you’re saying, we’re talking about. You’ve just said that you’ll put your hand up if there’s a spill. You want to be the leader, don’t you?” she pressed.“That’s correct,” he said.Mr Joyce went on to pitch his credentials, saying his previous stint as leader gave the Nationals the highest number of Cabinet ministers in their history and more seats than they’d held in roughly three decades.“We did a whole range of things, and I believe that if people want to investigate whether there’s going to be a chance, now is the time to do it, two years before the next election,” he said. His Sunrise sparring partner, Labor’s Joel Fitzgibbon, described Mr Joyce’s move as a “vote of no confidence” in the leadership of the Nationals.“Barnaby Joyce just told us that the National Party is dysfunctional, and indeed hopeless. My concern is that a dysfunctional government just got a whole lot more dysfunctional.”Mr McCormack himself addressed the issue at a press conference in Canberra.“We want regional Australians to know they are our focus. Not ourselves. Not the Canberra bubble,” he said.“There is no vacancy for the leadership at the moment of the National Party. And I have delivered for regional Australia.”The incumbent defended his record as leader.“I have absolutely made sure that the $100 billion of money that we are spending on infrastructure, that regional Australia has received its fair share,” he said....

Mark Latham in the upper house? A Coalition minority government? The NSW election is nearly upon us and it's going to be a wild ride

It's a fight for a rapidly vanishing centre, which will make passing bills difficult for whoever wins. Chris Pavlich/Dean Lewins(AAP)We are but weeks away from an election in New South Wales – polling day is on March 23 – and it will be eagerly watched. Not just for the outcome but for the implications for the looming federal election. That’s according to Dr Andy Marks, a political scientist from Western Sydney University, who tells us on the podcast today that this state election outcome may give us some clues on how some global political themes are playing out here in Australia. “It’s not just about state politics. Increasingly the Australian electoral cycles, federally and at the state level, are subject to changes in political dynamics internationally. We’re seeing the erosion of centrist politics around the world […] and that even affects humble New South Wales.” He predicts a weakened Nationals Party will be facing a strong challenge from the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party and that One Nation’s Mark Latham is almost a sure bet to win a spot in the NSW upper house. “I do think you’ll see a minority Coalition government returned but the really interesting play is what happens in the upper house. Currently, the Coalition have to deal with two to three independents or minor parties to get stuff over the line,” said Dr Marks. “I think what we’ll see in the coming parliament is that that the ranks of cross-benchers will expand quite dramatically, up to seven to nine cross-benchers. So that makes negotiations pretty fraught. "This is really going to be new territory,” he said. “We’ve got One Nation returning to the fold. Mark Latham, their number one ticket holder in the upper house, will get in. But potentially they’ll get two seats in the upper house. You’ll have an emboldened Shooters and Fishers Party. "So you really have a really broad field and it’s going to mean negotiating the passage of bills will be pretty difficult.” We also talked about: why East Hills (which takes in suburbs like Panania, Condell Park, the Bankstown aerodrome, Padstow, Revesby and others) is the most marginal seat in NSW how a plan to demolish and rebuild two stadiums turned into a political headache for NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian why Michael Daley, who took over from Luke Foley as NSW Labor leader late last year, is only now just making his mark how local issues in rural seats may end up deciding the fate of the state what it all means as we head into the May federal election.
