Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/bionicplanet Two weeks ago, climate pioneer Interface Inc announced they would become carbon-negative across all their operations by 2040, enabling them to move beyond the use of carbon credits. Some people heralded this as a sign that the days of offsetting emissions are over, but that's not exactly true – at least not yet. Most companies aren't as far along on their climate journeys as Interface is, and we still need offsets to accelerate reductions in the next decade. The fact is a company's decision to offset or not depends on its unique circumstances. In this episode of Bionic Planet, we delve into the remarkable journey of Interface, Inc., a flooring tile manufacturer that has been at the forefront of climate action since CEO Ray Anderson (pictured) the 1990s. The episode explores how Interface's early efforts to offset emissions paved the way for their groundbreaking carbon-negative carpet line, which absorbs more greenhouse gas than it emits over its lifecycle. We replay a 2021 interview with Buddy Hay, the industrial engineer who played a pivotal role in quantifying Interface's emissions, and we detail the company's transition to offsetting, the challenges they faced in measuring and reducing their carbon footprint, and the evolution of the voluntary carbon market, the role of verification and validation in offsetting, and the importance of natural climate solutions -- as well as how the company used offsets the right way: to reduce emissions in the present while developing technologies that enabled it to move beyond offsetting in the future. And if that is happening, then inevitably there will be new opportunities where investment will be going instead of coming to oil and gas.So, it was driven by old follow the money situation. And if the investors are thinking and investing in sustainable projects, in green energy, or any other options rather than oil and gas, then probably this is where I need to be.Excellence in expertise requires industry and world awareness09:39: It doesn't matter how good you are at what you do. You need to understand what is happening across the industry and what is happening in the world, as well. Geoscience is not limited13:28: Geoscience is not limited. It's not just we are so technical we can do one thing. We can actually do many, many things. This would be probably if any other prospective student's thinking about changing their profession, thinking that they are very technical, as I was thinking before. You are not. Please don't be discouraged. You will learn ninety-nine percent of things you will learn is new, but the application of the things that you will learn, you are doing today. So, this will just help you and expand your horizons, but it will not be completely pushing you towards the unknown. So, don't be discouraged. On being a woman in the STEM industry16:32: I never felt like, because of the woman, I could not do something. It's never, never on my radar. And maybe because I didn't think that the people around me who I work with didn't think that either. I was just able to filter out whatever would be offensive or sensible for other people. You just learn to do that, and push forward.Show Links: TranscriptGuest Profile:Diana Khandilyan | Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University Diana Khandilyan LinkedIn

As the UN's COP28 Conference continues in Dubai, one would think the Net Zero Emissions Agenda would be artificially propped up at an aggressive level. While they may be trying that at the conference, the plans have taken quite a bit of hits. COP 28's President, COP28 president Sultan Al Jaber, recently stated there is "no scientific evidence" supporting the need to end using petroleum and related fuel sources. The British Parliament voted to set back electric car quotas endorsed by PM Rishi Sumak. Consumers have pushed back against proposed government mandates limiting gas-powered cars and appliances and more scientists are stepping forward to challenge pop-science climate claims. Co-host Michael Chui talks with Nan Ransohoff. Ransohoff is the head of climate at Stripe and leads Frontier, an advanced market commitment for carbon removal. She answers questions including: Is carbon removal a get out of jail free card for emitters? What are the most promising carbon removal technologies? Is it possible to scale up effective technologies quick enough? How much do costs need to come down before scaling is possible? What is an advanced market commitment? See www.mckinsey.com/privacy-policy for privacy information
There are no studies where absolute zero emissions can be reached with reductions alone, meaning carbon removals are crucial to reaching ‘net' zero emissions, according to the IPCC. After the world has reached that point, any remaining emission would need to be countered by an equivalent removal from the atmosphere. Because of this, the world of carbon removals is rapidly growing in importance, from technological innovations to legislation looking into how to verify removals. To introduce us to the world of capture and storage (CCS) and carbon dioxide removals (CDR), Eve Tamme, policy expert and founder of climate policy advisory, Climate Principles, joins the Watt Matters team. On Monday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by Sarah Clancy, Clare PPN Co-Ordinator, and Elaine D'Alton from Clare Women's Network to talk about the Fair Clare Report being launched at a free event in the Templegate Hotel, Ennis this evening. A first of its kind research project conducted in Clare which examined the effects on Clare communities of the transition to net zero carbon emissions has found that there is a risk of ‘an unfair transition in the county' unless significant measures are taken to address this. The report, entitled ‘Fair Clare: Securing Socio-Economic Rights and a Just Transition in Clare', contains strategic recommendations for local and national policymakers aimed at reducing emissions and tackling poverty in the county. One of the major themes of India's G20 presidency, which concludes later this year, has been the advancement of an ambitious green transition for the 21st century. If the world's hopes of accelerating a clean, sustainable, just, affordable, and inclusive energy transition are to come to fruition, ensuring the spread of solar power—especially to the poorest parts of the globe—will be essential. Milan's guest on the show this week is tasked with doing exactly this.Dr. Ajay Mathur is the Director General of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), a relatively new international consortium of more than 120 countries. ISA's overarching objective is to foster the efficient consumption of solar energy to reduce the world's dependence on fossil fuels.Dr. Mathur was formerly the Director General of The Energy and Resources Institute and the Director General of India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency. He and Milan discuss the explosive growth in solar power and what that means for India—and the world. They also talk about the promise of green hydrogen, the impediments to solar adoption, and the expansion of mini-grid technology.Episode notes:1. Ajay Mathur, “International finance must take a lead in mobilising solar investments,” Business Standard, September 7, 2023.2. We discuss Singapore's sustainable agenda with Grace Fu, the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment.
Global efforts to mitigate climate change are coming into focus ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference - or COP28 - in November. Many countries have shifted their targets since the Paris Agreement, which aims to avoid catastrophic temperature rises by limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees. So where does Australia stand on its net zero targets in comparison to the rest of the world?
According to the International Energy Agency, energy accounts for more than three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions, with oil and gas operations alone making up 15% of that pie. Is there a pathway for the energy sector to achieve the ambitious target of Net Zero Emissions by 2050? We discuss these themes with Brandon Spencer, President of ABB Energy Industries.

Experts recently released a new study examining the extinction risk posed by the advancements and potential of the artificial intelligence industry. This comes not long after Geoffrey Hinton, widely known as the "Godfather of AI," quit his high-ranking position at Google over the devastating possibilities. In Ireland, the Climate Change zealots within its leadership are mulling over the idea of slaughtering around 200,000 cows simply to satisfy the Net Zero Emissions plan. This and the Green Agenda's War on Farming (pushed by John Kerry) will have destructive effects on the world food supply if this is allowed to happen and continue, says Dr. Jerome Corsi, who delves into these and other issues on The Truth Central. Continuing our focus on sustainable semiconductor manufacturing, in this episode Françoise speaks with Cédric Rolin, project manager at imec, about its Sustainable Semiconductor Technologies & Systems (SSTS) research program. Launched by imec in 2021, the SSTS rallies stakeholders from across the semiconductor industry to help reduce the ecological impact of the IC value chain. In response to mounting concerns about climate change, tech companies around the world are accelerating efforts to complete carbon neutrality for their supply chains and products. The semiconductor industry recognizes its pivotal role in this endeavor. Studies show that almost 75 percent of mobile devices' CO2 emissions can be traced back to the underlying manufacturing process – with chip production being responsible for nearly half of that footprint. Against this backdrop, the SSTS program provides detailed information on the environmental impact of choices made during semiconductor technology's definition phase. To date, SSTS has 15 member partners including Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft; GlobalFoundries, TSMC, Samsung, and Rapidus; and equipment suppliers including Applied Materials, ASML, Edwards, Kurita, SCREEN, and Tokyo Electron. In this podcast, you'll learn the back story of the program, how it's structured, what role these companies play, how they developed a new data tool called imec.netzero, how the program will help companies achieve Net Zero Emissions, and more. imec will be discussing this important topic further at its ITF Semicon USA, in a fireside chat with imec's Emily Gallagher and SEMI's Mousumi Bhat. This week on the podcast our special guest is John Dillon, former Senior Vice President, Policy and Corporate Counsel at Business Council of Canada. First, John joins Jackie and Peter in a discussion about the Alberta Election that is being held on May 29, 2023. What can we learn from the past record of the two leading parties, the United Conservative Party (UCP) and the New Democratic Party (NDP)? What do we know about their plans for the future of Alberta's energy industry? Next, we ask John to reflect on his 32 years at the forefront of climate change policy in Canada. How have corporate attitudes towards reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions changed over that time? What policy changes are needed for Canada to make big reductions in GHG emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050? Despite the Green Agenda's increasing damage to the US economy (as well as that of the EU), the Climate Change fanatics in power continue to spend increasing amounts of money on their goal to achieve "Net-Zero Emissions" as an energy production standard. Dr. Jerome Corsi explains why this is a fantasy and will continue to sink the nation's finances and create a true dependency on the Chinese Communist Party. Is that, however, the true goal?Meantime, not long after J.P. Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, without evidence, proclaimed the bank crisis is over, regional banks stocks have fallen hard. What happens next? The Federal Reserve's decisions this week become more crucial than it had been in years. Our path toward a resilient clean energy future depends on new and developing carbon-free technologies. The Institute for the Energy Transition (IET) was launched earlier this year to advance the commercialization of breakthrough technologies, which will allow electric companies to reach net-zero emission goals while keeping customer reliability and affordability front and center. The IET will build off the foundation set by the Carbon-Free Technologies Initiative (CFTI). (You can listen to a previous discussion about CFTI at: https://bit.ly/41EuefK). On this episode, Gerry Anderson, who retired after a distinguished career leading DTE Energy and now chairs the Edison Foundation, and Eric Holdsworth, EEI's managing director of Clean Energy and Environmental Policy, discuss the efforts of EEI and our partners to accelerate the pace for research, development, demonstration, and deployment of new carbon-free technologies; the vision behind IET and the work underway; and more.
Global warming is a growing threat that we must reckon with, and dealing with climate change starts with de-carbonization. The renewable energy transition is an ongoing revolution that could determine humanity's survival in the 21st century. How do we ensure a safe transition to renewable energy? How are China and the international community doing in this area? What are the hurdles in the process, and how does the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict impact Europe's energy transition?
In this episode, we'll explore the intricacies of the steel manufacturing and sustainability process, and understand just how many economic steps are required in order for us to move towards a better, more environmentally friendly world. Host David Kirkpatrick welcomes Annie Heaton, CEO of ResponsibleSteel™, a multistakeholder organization founded to bring together steelmakers, civil society, suppliers, and downstream users to provide a global standard and certification initiative for steel.
In this week's episode, host Margaret Walls talks with Grace Wu, an assistant professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, about the intersection of land use change and the adoption and implementation of clean energy technologies. Wu discusses the impacts of land use change on species and ecosystems, the land use requirements of different clean energy technologies, and strategies that can help us meet net-zero energy targets while minimizing negative impacts on habitats and ecosystems. This week, climate negotiators and world leaders from around 200 countries are descending on the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el Sheikh for COP27—the twenty-seventh gathering of the 197 nations that signed up to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change back in 1992. As proceedings get underway, a huge question mark hangs over this year's climate summit. Rich nations are pushing for poor countries to announce greater cuts to carbon emissions, but developing countries claim that their developed counterparts have stiffed them when it comes to climate finance. To make sense of this dynamic at this year's gathering and to explore the unique role India plays, journalist Bill Spindle joins Milan on the show this week.Bill is the climate and energy editor at the new journalism start-up, Semafor. He's also a ten-year veteran of the Wall Street Journal, where he served as South Asia Bureau Chief from 2016 to 2020. Bill has spent the last year crisscrossing the length and breadth of India reporting on the transformation of India's energy sector—a journey he documented on Substack.Bill and Milan discuss the developed vs. developing country deadlock that imperils the COP27 proceedings, India's opportunity to play a leadership role, and the continuing uncertainty over U.S.-China relations. Plus, the two discuss Bill's year-long adventure traveling 8,000 kilometers across India by train. Semafor “Climate” newsletter by Bill Spindle.
