In this episode, we chat to Honourable Shane Jones, member of the NZ government and the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, Minister for Regional Development, Minister for Resources, Associate Minister of Finance, and Associate Minister for Energy. Shane entered Parliament in 2005 and joined New Zealand First as an MP in 2017. As a proud born and bred Northlander, Shane has always asked the tough questions, identified policy solutions, and accelerated implementation in his political life …and has been a very vocal supporter of the mining industry, including the possibility of seabed mining. He very much sees New Zealand's own natural resources as a pathway to economic prosperity, creating regional wealth and jobs.  On the podcast, we discuss what the mining industry means to NZ, the policies the government have, and are looking to implement to make the industry more attractive and why companies should invest into NZ's mining industry and much more. KEY TAKEAWAYS The New Zealand government, under the leadership of Shane Jones, is committed to revitalising the mining industry, reversing previous bans on oil and gas New Zealand has developed a Critical Minerals List and a mineral strategy aimed at restoring pride in the natural resources sector The introduction of Fast Track legislation aims to streamline the environmental permitting process for mining projects, allowing for quicker allocation of permits  A $200 million co-investment fund has been established to encourage both local and international investment in the mining sector, addressing concerns about potential future government changes BEST MOMENTS "I believe a lot of the climate change hysteria is actually going to wreck Western economies unless we restore some balance to it."  "We've got a kind of figurative Sahara desert of iron sands resource, largely in the ocean."  "Any economy that races ahead, demonises, cancels its fossil fuels industry without an affordable strategy... is dicing with economic calamity."  "No one enjoys a perfect history. So what we've got to do is ensure that mining as it goes forward is strongly defended." The political landscape across the island of Ireland has been changing over the past decade. Demographic changes, Brexit, polling data, and the realignment of traditional politics in the Oireachtas all point to the need to prepare for the increasing inevitability of substantial constitutional change in the future. Dialogue around the potential for a United Ireland has become more prevalent, particularly in Northern Ireland. In his address to the IIEA, Senator Conor Murphy discusses how this now requires more structured formal planning involving the Irish Government to ensure the necessary preparations are in place for a smooth transition in the event of constitutional change. Speaker bio: Conor Murphy was appointed as Sinn Féin Leader of the Seanad in February 2025. In 1998, after serving as a Newry and Mourne councillor for eight years, he was elected to the Assembly where he chaired the Assembly Committee, was the Party Chief Whip, and also held the position of Group Leader of the Sinn Féin MLAs. In 2005, Senator Murphy became the first Irish Republican to be elected as MP for Newry and Armagh, he then retained the seat in 2010. In 2007, Conor was appointed the Minister for Regional Development, a position that he held until 2011. In 2012, as part of Sinn Féin's commitment to ending double-jobbing, he left the Assembly to concentrate on his role as an MP.

R&D Edition: Recapturing water and nutrients on WA's deep sands

Vegalogue is a regular podcast from vegetable, potato and onion industry peak body AUSVEG, where we examine the pressing issues and latest developments in our sector. The deep, sandy soils of Western Australia's Swan Coastal Plain are among the most infertile in the world. They're also where many of the state's vegetables are produced, however, and growers have long struggled with the low ability of these soils to retain nutrients or moisture.More than 60 percent of irrigation water and nitrogen fertiliser applied to vegetables on the sandy soils of the Swan Coastal Plain leach past the rootzone. The story's not much better for phosphorus or potassium.Against that backdrop, input costs continue to grow, water allocations tighten, and concerns about fertiliser runoff into waterways and wetlands increase. In an effort to address this problem, WA's Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has launched a new levy-funded project to develop a system for capturing leached nutrients and irrigation water from below the crop's root zone, and recycling this water back onto crops as irrigation. The project, which runs until February 2030, will investigate the use of geomembranes installed below the root zone of crops to collect leachate and divert it into dams for reuse. We had a chat with DPIRD research scientist Dr Valeria Almeida Lima about the project, and how this new system might work.Learn more about the project discussed in this episode: Evaluating on farm water and nutrient recapture in Western Australia production systems You can also contact Dr Lima at Valeria.AlmeidaLima@dpird.wa.gov.au.Thanks for listening to Vegalogue! There's growing concerns about the future of small town New Zealand - with one expert warning 'tough conversations' are needed. The closure of Winstone Pulp International's Ruapehu mills have cost the region 230 jobs, and the proposed shutdown of Alliance Group's Smithfield meat processing plant in Timaru could cost over 600 more. Regional Development Minister Shane Jones says the need to achieve certain climate goals is driving down key industries - and negatively impacting regional New Zealand. "If we're not going to maintain access to gas and coal during a managed transition and we're going to continually make it more difficult for farmers to sustain production, we are going to see a contraction of the economy around some of our small towns." Shane Jones says "structural change" to the energy sector is definitely on the agenda following the closure of two central North Island mills.  Winstone Pulp has confirmed it's closing its two mills near Ohakune, with 230 people set to lose their jobs.  Jones says the Government can't control factors like global commodity prices, foreign exchange rates, and global shipping logistics.  But the Regional Development and Associate Energy Minister told Mike Hosking the power of large "gentailers" needs to be broken up to make energy prices more competitive.  He says the aluminium sector is looking towards importing, there's uncertainty for corn growers, and the country's biggest gas user Methanex has been facing issues.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Carolyn Blacklock's passport was confiscated from her in a foreign country she was faced with a scary reality that got wilder at every turnCarolyn Blacklock's passport was taken from from her at the Port Moresby International Airport when she was trying to get on a plane back to Australia. It was at that moment she realised just how much trouble she was in. Carolyn, who had headed up the national power company in Papua New Guinea and worked for the World Back there, had faced charges of corruption after a change in government. When the court cleared her of any and all wrongdoing, she thought she would be able to leave the country, but still she was detained or threatened at every turn. So, Carolyn set about getting herself out of PNG and back to Australia by any means necessary. What ensued was a wild, nine-day journey travelling in a helicopter, in the boot of a four-wheel drive, in a tiny dinghy and on foot. While Carolyn did get herself out of PNG, she desperately misses the country she called home for more than a decade.Carolyn's story explores escape, adventure, family, regional development, the Pacific, banking, diplomacy, corruption, governance, country Australia, Papua New Guinea, close neighbours, emigration, illegal immigration, politics and foreign affairs.

Sea-level rise is already causing harm in the Bay Area, but it's hard to picture what's yet to come. Some Bay Area artists are using their crafts to imagine what our region might look like as waters continue to rise: drowned cities, hills turned into islands, and more commuting by boat. These visions of the future are manifested through graphic images, art installations and storytelling. For our latest installment of Climate Fix, Forum's regular collaboration with KQED's Science team, we'll hear from the artists grappling with sea-level rise. Guests: Ezra David Romero, climate reporter, KQED Kristina Hill, director, Institute for Urban and Regional Development, College of Environmental Design, UC Berkeley Ana Teresa Fernández, artist, creator of the "On the Horizon" art installation that has been displayed on beaches in California, Mexico and at the San Francisco Cliff House. Nicole Gluckstern, playwright and director of "The Forever Wave," an audio play set in San Francisco in 2070 after major sea-level rise. Brian Stokle, urban planner and cartographer, co-created a series of poster maps that depict the Bay Area.
