The government has fast-tracked legislation to strengthen the Triple Zero emergency call system following Optus' recent failures, which have been linked to at least three deaths. As parliament resumed, leaders also marked the second anniversary of Hamas's October 7 attack through southern Israel, which sparked the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The priority of the new session was to improve the emergency call network.

On Thursday, Optus users across four states attempted to call for help – but they couldn't get through. The 13-hour outage has been linked to three deaths and met with outrage. The Federal Communications Minister says Optus can expect to suffer significant consequences following last week's triple-0 outage, that's been linked to multiple deaths.
