Vanessa Stockard recently visited the podcast for the 3rd time!Vanessa Stockard was born in 1975 in Sydney and spent her formative years in a small country town in the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. At 12 she returned to Sydney as a boarder at Abbotsleigh. After graduating from the College of Fine Arts (COFA) Sydney in 1998 with a BFA, Stockard launched head first into the avant-garde art scene in the bohemian village of Glebe.Stockard is one of the most dangerous artists on the Australian, and by extension, international scene. Her ethereal works of art are a window into the soul of a talented and complex artist, one whose legacy is bound to resonate well past her generation. The existential nature of her painting viscerally questions our concepts of social relationships and reality.Twenty years of introspection and experimentation, ranging over a number of media, have forged Vanessa's style and vulcanised her craft, enabling her to reveal complex misdemeanours, while simultaneously demanding the viewer's self-reflection. She deals with isolation and sadness with intimate care and attention.Vanessa is unhindered by failure, always continuing the discovery of things previously unseen, revealing work that is fresh, unlaboured and penetrating. The deceptive everyday nature of her subject matter belies hidden depths of relationship, feeling and emotion. One could describe her process as absence of thought, a freedom of construct, not unlike the stream of consciousness associated with authors such as Hemmingway and Thomas Wolfe. If light and shade were students, she would be their master. This skill, combined with a naturally deft hand and a determined use of perspective, imbue her subjects with gravitas. The artist refers to set design elements that often alter and morph as her piece progresses. She has said she feels grounded from her ability to draw from the benign surrounds of familiar life, infusing these images with a meaning that yields a meditative satisfaction.Stockard's oeuvre features many pieces developed without any direct visual reference but rather from memory, often incorporating domestic pets such as cats and dogs. Juxtaposing the anthropomorphic nature these animals are given by our society, she infuses the personification of virtue and vice into the everyday canine and feline status quo of our pets. Cats with their fluffy comical exteriors glint with an instinctive urge to kill and cruelly torment their prey, dogs with their providence of happiness, loyalty and friendship are flung back onto Churchill's menacing metaphor for depression. The Kafkaesque mindset behind such works is reminiscent of the existentialist authors like Sartre and Camus. Absurdism appears with cake imagery and its relation to a childlike nostalgia for happiness which may never be real, but rather imaginary, unattainable and unachievable. It's been said “pain is inexhaustible, it's only people who get exhausted…”One can never “have it all”, to be both the artist and patron. To intrinsically understand those things around us that others overlook is what we want from our artists, our creatives. They give voice to the profound mystery of the world around us, surrounded as we are with consumerism, pointless greed, deceit and dissatisfaction. There's no pretension here in these paintings, just spontaneous insight and beauty. Some art is said to speak volumes, but these works are more like innocent and delicate poems, whispering untold truths with an economy of words.Something Rather Than Nothing Podcast

Introducing Jo Taylor, the Chief Executive Officer of the Siddle Family Foundation, to Purposely. Jo sheds light on her professional and personal odyssey from the UK to Australia and the impact of her partner—a medical professional whose dreams of a life downunder set the stage for their move. We delve into her her leadership role in philanthropy and how the work she is involved in is reshaping the narrative around giving and philanthropy.  After 23 years, Jo is now happily married to her partner, and they are parents to two children. Having spent two decades in Bondi, they recently moved to the Mid North Coast region.   Contrary to her initial career plan of becoming a lawyer, Jo has emerged as a leader in the philanthropy sector in Australia. Leveraging her legal studies, her involvement in Raise & Give (RAG) during her tenure at the University of Leicester, and her experience as a fundraiser in the charity sector, Jo brings a substantial depth of knowledge and expertise to her current role   Jo shares her professional journey from lawyer to philanthropy leader. This transformation involves her engagement in 'Pay What It Takes' (PWIT), a coalition between for purpose organisations and funders aiming to redefine philanthropy and reshape the funding landscape for the charitable sector. Serving as the Chair of this Coalition, Jo and the PWIT Steering Committee drew inspiration from the impactful work of Bridgespan and Foundations in the United States, prompting crucial questions about the level of financial support provided by Australian funders. Their objective is to challenge the cycle of underfunding and organisational challenges by advocating for unrestricted funding or a 30% addition to project-based funding to adequately cover indirect costs.   A pivotal catalyst for this movement was the inquiry titled 'A Sector in Peril,' laying the foundation for collaboration among like-minded foundations. The Coalition led by Jo, and comprising Philanthropy Australia, the Centre for Social Impact, Social Ventures Australia, The Origin Foundation, and the Paul Ramsay Foundation, conducted comprehensive research, interviews, literature reviews, case studies, and workshops to address chronic underfunding of core operational expenses within Australian organizations. The vulnerabilities exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic further emphasized the critical need for adequate funding.   Jo emphasises the necessity to challenge misconceptions surrounding indirect costs and advocates for a redefined evaluation of efficiency and effectiveness by funders. This paradigm shift demands courage and peer leadership within the sector, recognising the entrenched mental models ingrained in both funders and nonprofit organizations that need to be reshaped.   Despite the challenges, the Pay What It Takes movement is gaining momentum, offering optimism for a sector striving for genuine impact and change. The collaboration aims to redefine the philanthropic landscape in Australia, ensuring that organisations receive sufficient funding to effect lasting, impactful change.   Throughout her professional journey, Jo's commitment to social justice has been profoundly shaped by personal aspirations, life experiences, and the influence of her parents, particularly her mother. Her story serves as a compelling inspiration for those seeking to make a meaningful difference in the world of philanthropy. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message

In the last episode of the season Cass and Sam share their own personal stories and experiences of listening to their intuition and following messages from the universe. Sam pulls three Dreamy Moon cards that beautifully support today's topic and then we dive in. We talk about how everyone receives messages differently, often in the way that each individual wants to speak to the universe. Cass receives messages through occurrences that she experiences in life and Sam receives them in many ways but today shares how animal spirits come through to speak to her. Sam first shares the story of when she dreamt of her dog Luna being born and shares the wild story where animal medicine guided her move from Melbourne to the Mid North Coast of NSW. #016 - Kathy and Matt McMillan are experienced tiny housers from the mid-North Coast of NSW and who were on the podcast back in episode #009.In that episode, they shared some of their experiences with their composting toilet. Compost toilets are a common area of discussion in the tiny house world, and it's always great to hear real-life, practical experiences from people using them in their everyday lives. So I've asked Kathy and Matt to join us again today to dive deeper into their own experiences with the two different brands they have used, as both toilets work quite differently, but the first one didn't work for them and the one they have currently is working for them.About Kathy & MattKathy and Matt McMillan have been living in their pre-loved tiny house on wheels with their dogs Chloe and Webber since April 2021. They live off-grid, with solar power, rainwater tank, and compost toilet, and believe living this way makes them more mindful of their impact on the environment.Their tiny is parked on the property where Kathy grew up, on Dunghutti Country in the Mid North Coast hinterland of NSW. The family appeared on the Too Much Stuff episode of the ABC's Compass program in July 2021, which is still available to view on ABC iView. Going tiny was a conscious decision to live more sustainably, downsizing to what they really needed, and fuelled by a desire to slow down, live simply, in the peace and quiet of nature. When living off-grid and managing waste, the couple decided a waterless compost toilet was the most efficient and sustainable way to use less water and recycle waste, which can eventually be used on fruit trees. It makes them uncomfortable using flush toilets now, seeing a precious resource wasted. The couple do not claim to be experts in compost toilets however they want to share their experiences and some really honest toilet talk, no BS! In this conversation we talk about:Why Matt and Kathy chose a waterless composting toilet over other toilet options in their tiny homeTheir first composting toilet and why it didn't work for themTheir current "Separett Tiny" composting toilet, how it works and why it's a better option for themAll about emptying, consumables and smells of composting toiletsWhat they've learned and wish they knew before buying and using a composting toiletLots more!Find out more about the podcast and get the episode show notes & links here:https://tinyhouseconversations.com/016And make sure you subscribe so you'll know exactly when new episodes are live! You can follow Kathy and Matt's tiny adventures here:IG: https://www.instagram.com/atinylifeafterall/Compass documentary: https://iview.abc.net.au/show/compass/series/35/video/RN2011H020S00You can follow Lucy's tiny adventures here:IG: https://www.instagram.com/tinyhouseconversationsFB: https://www.facebook.com/tinyhouseconversationsSupport the show

The family appeared on the "Too Much Stuff" episode of ABC's Compass program in July 2021, which is still available to view on ABC iView.Ten years ago, the couple started questioning their stressful city life and excessive consumption. They had busy corporate jobs, a mortgage, and mounting personal debt just to keep up with all the things they thought they needed. Five years ago, they discovered the tiny house movement but thought it would remain a dream for them. When Kathy's Mum died in 2018, it forced introspection and set the wheels in motion that got them to where they are now.Going tiny was a conscious decision to live more sustainably, downsizing to what they really needed, and fuelled by a desire to slow down, live simply, in the peace and quiet of nature. Financial freedom was a motivator, along with freeing up time to concentrate on meaningful pursuits and most importantly living close to family. In this conversation we talk about:Why Matt and Kathy chose to buy a pre-loved tiny home instead of DIY buildingTheir off-the-grid set-up including what they do with solar, water, a composting toilet and management of greywaterFinancing a tiny houseHow living in a tiny house connects you to everyday life and natureSome misconceptions they commonly hear about tiny house livingPlenty more!Find out more about the podcast and get the episode show notes & links here:https://tinyhouseconversations.com/009-off-the-grid-tiny-house-kathy-mattAnd make sure you subscribe so you'll know exactly when new episodes are live! You can follow Kathy and Matt's tiny adventures here:IG: https://www.instagram.com/atinylifeafterall/Compass documentary: https://iview.abc.net.au/show/compass/series/35/video/RN2011H020S00 You can follow Lucy's tiny adventures here:IG: https://www.instagram.com/tinyhouseconversationsFB: https://www.facebook.com/tinyhouseconversations

DONE Coffee is a coffee company based on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Surfers by passion, their company has a relaxed vibe, but they are serious about the service that they provide for their customers. DONE Coffee sells coffee and other complimentary products to cafes around the region and beyond. They also provide training and consulting services to these cafes and have always prided themselves on their commitment to roll up their sleeves and support their customers in every way that they can. Recently, they decided to grow the business by expanding into the retail market. And while they had been doing bits and pieces with their marketing while working in the business to business space, approaching a new market segment was going to need a little more thought and planning. So, I thought I would chat to Stewie about how he thought that his marketing strategy and plan would now set them up for marketing success.
