Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/butterfly-bench-with-edge-lit-acrylic/overview Build a bench for your backyard or your festival theme camp that shows your logo or camp mascot in glowing rainbow colors. Playa Tech is a system of furniture plans designed by Sunshine Zwern. Create benches, tables and chairs from a single sheet of plywood using common wood shop tools. The furniture packs flat, then slots together in minutes, allowing you to bring an entire living room set for your festival camp in the back of your Subaru. This system is rapidly gaining popularity with the Burning Man crowd, and we've seen it being used at festivals nationwide. Our camp decided to get a bit fancy this year and worked together to create this Playa Tech Butterfly Bench. The butterfly is cut with a handheld CNC router from a sheet of 3/4" plywood, and then back-lit with edge-lit 1/4" acrylic, 30/m NeoPixels and running WLED software powered by a Sparkle Motion board. It's a lovely addition to our camp setup, and makes an absolutely lovely "selfie spot" in any garden. The LED build is pretty easy on this project. The challenge is in the woodworking. But, who doesn't love a good woodworking challenge? Build a countdown clock to help teach toddlers how to visualize time. Guide: https://learn.adafruit.com/toddler-timer This project uses NeoPixel LEDs to represent blocks of time that can be setup to countdown any number of minutes. It features an OLED display to show the time remaining and a rotary encoder to set up the intervals and to start and stop the countdown. You can customize the blocks of time in the code and easily cycle between them with the rotary encoder. We think it's a unique way to show the passage of time with NeoPixel LEDs. This uses the Adafruit QT PY RP2040 dev board to drive the NeoPixels and the rotary encoder. Coming soon! We were catching up on a recent Hackaday hackchat with Eben Upton (https://hackaday.io/event/202122-raspberry-pi-hack-chat-with-eben-upton) and learned some fun facts: such as the DVI hack for the RP2040 was inspired by a device called the IchigoJam (https://www.hackster.io/news/ichigojam-combines-strawberry-and-raspberry-to-deliver-a-raspberry-pi-pico-powered-educational-micro-66aa5d2f6eec). We remember reading about this back when it was an LPC1114, now it uses an RP2040. Well, we're wrapping up the Metro RP2350 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6003), and lately, we've been joking around that with DVI output and USB Host support via bit-banged PIO, you could sorta build a little stand-alone computer. Well, one pear-green-tea-fueled-afternoon later we tried our hand at designing a 'credit card sized' computer - that's 3.375" x 2.125", about the same size as a business card (https://hackaday.com/2024/05/07/the-2024-business-card-challenge-starts-now/) and turns out there's even a standard named for it: ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 (https://www.iso.org/standard/70483.html). Anyhow, with the extra pins of the QFN-80 RP2350B, we're able to jam a ridonkulous amount of hardware into this shape: RP2350B dual 150MHz Cortex M33 w/ PicoProbe debug port, 16 MB Flash + 8 MB PSRAM, USB type C for bootloading/USB client, Micro SD card with SPI or SDIO, DVI output on the HSTX port, I2S stereo headphone + mono speaker via the TLV320DAC3100 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/tlv320dac3100irhbt/2353656), 2-port USB type A hub for both keyboard and mouse or game controllers, chunky on-off switch, Stemma QT I2C + Stemma classic JST 3-pin, EYESPI for TFT displays, 5x NeoPixels, 3x tactile switches, and a 16-pin socket header with 10 A/D GPIO + 5V/3V/GND power pins. The PSRAM will help when we want to do things like run emulations that we need to store in fast RAM access, and it will also let us use the main SRAM as the DVI video buffer. When we get the PCBs back and assembled, what should we try running on this hardware? We're pretty sure it can run DOOM. Should that be first? :) We also need a name. Right now, we're just calling it Fruit Jam since it's inspired by the IchigoJam project.
Since the latest release of 'piolib' we can do things like drive NeoPixels on any pin on the Raspberry Pi 5 (https://learn.adafruit.com/circuitpython-on-raspberrypi-linux/using-neopixels-on-the-pi-5) which rocks, and means we can tackle the next, more complex, project: driving HUB75 RGB Matrix displays (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5362) these require even MORE timing freakiness: using 10 pins, and 'manual' PWM means we have to constantly blit out the color dithering. Historically this was done with mmap'd memory to the GPIO controller bitbanging, which required a full core and could jitter depending on load. But now we can use the PIO peripheral! We can drive massive display arrays at high speeds and color depths using just about any pins. The future is looking bright
Ladyada tasked Jepler with exploring the new libPIO for Raspberry Pi 5 computers: this gives us access to the RP1 chip so that we can run custom PIO state machines on the GPIO pins. A common use case is NeoPixels, because of the tight timing requirements of the WS281x LEDs. Here is our first light test that shows it is possible... Hot off the PIO-presses, our resident Jepler created a Python binding for the Raspberry Pi 5 that lets us use the RP1 chip (https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/rp1-the-silicon-controlling-raspberry-pi-5-i-o-designed-here-at-raspberry-pi/) on the 5/500 series boards to drive Neopixels using PIO. This is great because we can now use Neopixels (https://www.adafruit.com/category/168) and friends on the latest Pi boards, and we can use any pin because PIO is not limited by underlying peripherals. You do need the latest kernel and firmware, so it is not quite ready for prime-time, but once piolib (https://github.com/raspberrypi/utils/tree/master/piolib) is more readily available, we'll be able to have folks test this out. The ESP32-C6 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5672) is Espressif's first Wi-Fi 6 SoC integrating 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 (LE) and the 802.15.4 protocol. It brings the goodness you know from the low-cost C3 series (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5337) and improves it with Zigbee/802.15.4 at 2.4Ghz. That means it could make for great Matter (https://csa-iot.org/all-solutions/matter/) development hardware! We took our Feather ESP32-S2 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5000) and swapped out the 'S2 for a C6. Plus some re-routing and here's what we've got: a C6 Feather with lots of GPIO, lipoly charging and monitoring with the MAX17048, (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5580) NeoPixel, I2C Stemma QT port, and a second low-quiescent LDO for disabling the I2C and NeoPixel when we want ultra-low power usage. We also tossed a BME280 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2652) on there, so you could use it immediately as a low power temp/hum/pressure sensor. Now it's time to do the bringup - we like to blink LEDs, toggle pins, and also check that NeoPixels glow up. Good news: so far everything works! We're going to keep at it and see if we can maybe get a simple Matter demo going before we book the PCBs #adafruit #feather #esp32c6 #featherboard #wifi6 #bluetooth5 #zigbee #matteriot #lowpower #iotdevelopment #tempmonitoring #pcbdesign Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------
Back in 2021 we were on a real tear (https://blog.adafruit.com/?s=trinkey) making a whole bunch of 'low cost and easy to use' USB devices called Trinkeys (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=trinkey): the idea is you could just shove it into your USB A port on a computer or laptop and get instant access to a few NeoPixels (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4870) or an APDS9960 proximity sensor (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5022) or a rotary encoder (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4964). buuuut then there was a massive chip shortage (https://blog.adafruit.com/category/adafruit-video/chip-shortage/) and we couldn't get any ATSAMD21E18's which power most of the designs. welp, we have lots now. so lets keep designing Trinkeys! This is a trinkey with an SHT45 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5665), a favorite humidity and temperature sensor! The factory code will just spit out temperature and humidity over the USB Serial port in CSV format for easy integration. there's also a neopixel and a captouch sensor. we added a U-shaped cut-out to minimize self-heating from the neopixel or samd21 chip to get the best accuracy, we'll also have a version with an SHT41 that's less expensive (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5776) Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------
OK, after a long hiatus, the ESP32 Itsy Bitsy prototypes are built and ready for testing! We first designed this board Feb 20, 2020 - and it's been waiting oh so patiently for its turn. The ESP32 Pico module packs 8 MB of flash and 2 MB of PSRAM. Despite its small size this board can handle fairly complex programs. This board is very small but has lots of pins, with a USB-serial converter, NeoPixel, reset and user button, Stemma QT connector, and a 5V-logic output specifically for driving NeoPixels. to do my final 'all in one' test we're reading temperature and humidity from an I2C sensor, sending it to IO, then reading back the onboard NeoPixel color from the dashboard. It's an excellent way to make sure the whole thing is working the way we like. Last up, we'll do a low-power test, and then it'll be ready for fabrication! Autumn Lights Festival in Oakland, CA is a long-running and beloved Oakland tradition. It takes place at the Gardens at Lake Merritt every October. This event is a fundraiser for the garden, which is a peaceful sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city, right on the shore of the lake. Around 100 LED light artists bring their creations out to Autumn Lights every year. This year, we caught up with Yvette Schindler, who created a giant Connect 4 game using laser-etched acrylic, NeoPixels and arcade buttons. It's a fully functioning game where players can face off with each other by standing on either side of the board and pressing buttons to drop a "piece" wherever they'd like. This was a really popular installation -- people were lined up to play all night long. The game also functions as an art piece, with gorgeous colorful animations that run while no one is playing. It is one of the most beautiful and intuitively interactive use of pixels and Arduino we've seen. The Great Search - Single Channel 3V to 5V level shifter https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/diodes-incorporated/74AHCT1G126SE-7/2711993 On our new Prop-Maker Feather we like to do a 'favor' to our users by level shifting the NeoPixel signal from 3.3V to 5V. We don't always need this but some NeoPixel chipsets are a little finicky about the levels, especially if you have a 5.5V or 6V power line on the NeoPixels. We'll use a single buffer, and it needs to be small, so we'd like a tiny package. We'll also review the 74 series logic family (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7400-series_integrated_circuits) to verify what series we want to filter out when we search on DigiKey for this part. NeoPixel LEDs (a.k.a WS2812 / SK6812 family) are a super-easy way to add addressable RGB lighting with only one GPIO. they're ubiquitous on microcontrollers, but some chips or SBC's dont have neopixel support due to the precision timing required to send data. we often get folks asking how to get NeoPixels working on some OrangeBananaOnionRockchipAllWinner Pi type board, given we have our Blinka library that provides support for CircuitPython libraries. but if theres no neopixel_write implementation written for that platform, it just wont work. a quick solution is this seesaw-based NeoDriver board: send it the NeoPixel data you want to write over I2C and it will blit out the perfect pixel timing on the other side. we're using an attiny1616 so we have enough RAM to buffer a 512-pixel long strand. now, to be fair - its not super fast because we have to write each pixel over I2C https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-seesaw-atsamd09-breakout/neopixel, but with 1MHz clock and as long as you're not writing the whole strip at once, its not so bad! we add a 5V charge-pump so even on 3V boards, you'll get a clean 5V signal. pre-soldered terminal blocks and Stemma QT plugs make this a no-solder solution for adding NeoPixels easily to any device with I2C. we spent this evening updating this cute menorah project we've had for over a decade, from an Arduino UNO to run on a RP2040 QT Py board (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4900) with our prototype "IoT Button BFF" board to increment through the nights. we used PaintYourDragons' LED candle flicker code from this halloween project (https://learn.adafruit.com/circuit-playground-jack-o-lantern) and sorta mixed it with Liz's NeoPixel menorah project from last year (https://learn.adafruit.com/neopixel-menorah). this project predates NeoPixels - all we had were WS2801's at the time! we think it looks pretty nice now, and its a lot more compact :) #Hanukkah #menorah #circuitpython Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------
Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/neopixel-remote-ir-control-with-wled/ RGB LED lighting strips are everywhere. Many of these strips come with a handy infrared (IR) remote control that will allow you to select different colors, change brightness, and fade from one color to the next. They're very easy to install and use, but can be rather a disappointment for the discerning LED connoisseur. The pre-programed animations and available colors on these cheap RGB strips are very basic. You can get ordinary solid colors or annoying blink modes, but buttery smooth subtle color shifts, gradients, and beautiful mesmerizing animations are far beyond the reach of these "dumb" RGB strips. For subtlety and beauty, you need NeoPixels - "smart" individually addressable LED lights that can be controlled with code. This guide will show you how to get beautiful, subtle NeoPixel animations up and running and controllable with a simple IR remote in minutes, with no coding required. The free, open-source WLED app allows you to create your own NeoPixel animations, choosing from hundreds of effects and color palettes. Automatically map your custom animations to the buttons on your IR remote, so you can choose solid colors or run your beautiful custom animations from the same controller. For the RP2040 SCORPIO, we have 8 level-shifted outputs that come out the end, and they may end up connecting to a looooong wire strand before hitting that first NeoPixels. To avoid ringing, we can add a small in-line resistor (say 100 ohm). But we are really tight on space! How can we fit 8 resistors into a 2mm wide strip of space? Behold the magic of 0804 resistor packs! We love packs for space saving and possibly even cost saving when manufacturing. With prices of TFTs back down to earth we're doing a lot of revisions and updates for our TFT breakouts. This week we looked at the 2.8" TFT with capacitive touch. We revised the board to go from having SOIC to TSSOP 74VHC245 level shifters, and with the space left over added an EYESPI connector. We're also trying to wrap the RP2040 Scorpio feather - this is an RP2040 board that is designed for driving 8 strands of NeoPixels with the NeoPXL8 library. This is going to be our first RISC V based dev board, and isn't that something to celebrate? It's a QT Py based on the ESP32-C3 which is a WiFi + BLE chipset with RISC V instead of tensilica core. This chip is a little new, but it does seem to have fairly good Arduino support, we're able to do WiFi tests and thankfully someone sent us a patch for NeoPixels so that's glowing as well. This chip has a built in USB-to-Serial converter (*not* native USB!) so there's a ROM bootloader, great for beginners because its not brickable. There are not a lot of pins on the C3, its a very minimal chip, so the QT Py is actually a perfect format. this particular board is the first off the machine line this morning, so it'll be in the shop soooooon https://www.adafruit.com/product/5405 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

For the SCORPIO Feather, we need to buffer 8 outputs for NeoPixels from a 3V signal to a 5V signal. The '245 is the transceiver we have traditionally used - but we need a very smol chip, that can also handle if the logic level is 3V and the power supply maybe gets towards 5.5V, thus getting dangerously close to 1/2 VCC. We'll show why the T is important!
