According to this week’s guest, the British royal family has the greatest long-term brand of any organization. Hard to argue with public relations strategist Julia Angelen Joy. Not only is she an ardent follower of the Windsors, she is also a fan of Netflix drama, The Crown. That’s where I come in. When I read Julia’s blog post, 16 Royal PR Lessons, I knew I needed to bring her on the podcast to discuss the intersection of my favorite subject—public relations— with my favorite program at the moment. You guessed it.

ABOUT THE CROWN: Based on an award-winning play ("The Audience") by showrunner Peter Morgan, this lavish, Netflix-original drama chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) from the 1940s to modern times. The series begins with an inside look at the early reign of the queen, who ascended the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI. As the decades pass, personal intrigues, romances, and political rivalries are revealed that played a big role in events that shaped the later years of the 20th century. Netflix's The Crown is back for season three, and it's got a fresh polish in the form of a brand new cast playing the British royal family. This time out, the great Olivia Colman steps into Claire Foy's sensible brown shoes as Queen Elizabeth. This season follows the Royals from the mid-60s to late 70s, as we watch them contend with both external events — labor strikes, a mine disaster, a possible coup — and with internal strife — Margaret's wild ways, Charles coming-of-age, and the fact that Philip's still the same insufferable prig he always was.
Today on Boston Public Radio: WGBH News Political Reporter Adam Reilly and Joanna Weiss of Experience Magazine joined us for a politics roundtable. They discussed the presidential campaign of former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, Friday’s impeachment testimony from Marie Yovanovitch, and the method behind President Trump’s use of humor. Charlie Sennott discussed Marie Yovanovitch’s Friday testimony, and the rise of populist nationalism around the globe. Sennott is a WGBH News Analyst and CEO of "The GroundTruth Project." We opened lines to callers to ask: is the Democratic primary moving too far to the left like President Obama has implied, or is big structural change the zeitgeist of the party? Medical ethicist Art Caplan discussed a new rule by the Trump administration that aims to increase transparency between hospitals and insurance companies. TV critic Bob Thompson discussed season 3 of Netflix's "The Crown,” and a disclaimer being shown for classic Disney films on Disney+ to denote what the company calls “outdated cultural references.” Tech writer Andy Ihnatko discussed new rules for drone owners, an ongoing lawsuit between Google and software company Oracle, and the state of Black Friday culture in 2019. Authors Tonya and Ben Mezrich spoke about their new children's book, “Charlie Numbers and the Wooly Mammoth."

*Warning: This episode contains spoilers for Episode Six of Season Three of *Unforgotten. Alex Jennings is already a MASTERPIECE regular, with his role as the suave King Leopold in three seasons of Victoria. He's become known for his ability to fully inhabit royal personas, like as the Duke of Windsor in Netflix's The Crown. As Dr. Tim Finch in the third season of *Unforgotten, *however, Jennings got to create an entirely fictional character. But Dr. Finch wasn’t exactly the easiest of characters to play.

Hey all! We're back with a brand new studio, hot takes on television, and a long discussion about feng shui and location identification in the multiverse. But, it's hilarious to listen to us struggle. Tune in each Monday as we choose a new show and make more wildly inaccurate assumptions. Okay byeeeeee.
