Scientists have genetically engineered mice with some key characteristics of an extinct animal that was far larger — the woolly mammoth. Colossal Biosciences, a Dallas company, is trying to revive the Wooly Mammoth and, in the process, created a cute, cuddly, hairy, wooly rodent. Yes, it is fascinating, but it is also concerning whether or not we resurrect the Mammoth ala Jurassic Park. Geneticists perform this unbridled mad science because it is possible, but they never think about why they shouldn't and what the long-term ramifications are of playing God. Clyde Lewis talks about GENESIS OF THE GOD WEB tonight on Ground Zero (7-10 pm, pacific time on groundzeroplus.com).

We wrap 2024 with headlines regarding bears and heroism, a new species added to the Boone & Crockett Club, Wooly Mammoth findings and more! Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 217 Details Hunting Heroism, Rare Species Milestones, and Ancient Mammoth Findings 12-Year-Old Boy Saves Father from Bear Attack on Wisconsin Hunting Trip A Minnesota father is praising his 12-year-old son for saving his life after a black bear attack on September 6, 2024. While hunting in Wisconsin, Ryan Beierman was knocked down by a wounded bear that son, Owen, had shot earlier. The bear charged, and Ryan was left fighting for his life when 12-year-old Owen quickly shot and killed the bear with a hunting rifle. Ryan suffered several injuries, including cuts and puncture wounds, but credits Owen for his heroism. The father-son duo had extensive hunting experience, the father is proud of Owen's quick thinking and the shot that saved his father's life. The name Javelina descends from Spanish for “wild sow,” though javelina are unrelated to feral hogs, which sometimes share the landscapes they occupy. Native to the Southwest, javelina from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico are eligible for the records once measurement standards, likely based on skull dimensions, are finalized. This decision highlights the species' growing popularity among hunters and its value to conservation efforts, especially in desert habitats. Interest in javelina hunting has surged, with hunters reporting stable to growing populations and range expansion into northern areas like Santa Fe, New Mexico. Biologists report that across all three U.S. states with javelina populations, nearly 58,000 hunters annually harvest an estimated 33,000 javelina. Adding javelina as a trophy species aims to elevate their conservation status, bringing attention and resources to their often-overlooked habitats. The move reflects a collaborative effort among wildlife managers and conservationists across the Southwest and Mexico. Previously regarded as pests in some areas, the designation gives javelina greater value, encouraging responsible management. With its inclusion, javelina could impact the "North American 29" Super Slam of big-game species, though Boone and Crockett has not confirmed changes to this roster. Final details, including minimum scores for entries, are expected in the coming months. The jaw, along with additional bone fragments, was discovered in a backyard near Scotchtown. The homeowner spotted two mastodon teeth protruding from the soil, which led to further excavation and the discovery of the full jaw, a rib, and a toe bone. The fossils are set for carbon dating and analysis to learn more about the mastodon's age, diet, and habitat. This discovery adds to New York's rich Ice Age history, especially in Orange County, which has seen over 150 mastodon finds. Experts believe the jaw will provide crucial insights into the ecosystems of the Ice Age. The jaw will be displayed at the New York State Museum in 2025. This find highlights the importance of preserving and studying natural history and encourages the public to report similar discoveries. Picked up in the NoCKRs 2024 destash room. Cast on and worked on this almost exclusively on my Alaska trip. I have completed the yoke and about 5” of the body. Pinot Noir Purchase Targhee: Started spinning the giant (2.2 pound) ball of Targhee roving I bought from an attendee at last fall's Fort Worden Knitting Retreat. You know I cannot resist those large balls! The woman I bought it from said she got it from a weaver's estate. It seems pretty dusty and I was sneezing like crazy last night. I'll have to wear a mask while spinning. Kelly's Projects Finished: Pride dish towels in German Birdseye weave structure. I used three variegated skeins of fluffy cotton singles plied with a thin thread of something else (polyester or nylon?). For the stripes around these three I used cotton or cottolin yarn in red, orange, green, and blue. I used all those solids as warp and also used a royal blue cotton, a brick red cottolin and some bobbin leftovers from the last project. I ended up with 5 dishtowels and a square. I love these towels and can't wait to do another stash busting warp like this. Two skeins of Jazzman (CVM x Merino x Columbia) are finished. I'm in the process of topping off the bobbins before doing more plying. It's turned out to be a lighter yarn than I expected–fingering weight. It didn't plump up as much as I thought it would after washing. Use all the Spinning Tools Challenge: I've finished and wound off a second ball of the green singles from the tahkli. I've been taking it with me in the car and to dog class where we have a break between classes. I also spun up small samples (about 6-8 grams) on the other two spindles. Still to go: Charkha, Salish Spinner, Great Wheel, and Norwegian Found buttons for Marsha's baby sweater. Have three baby items to make–two for baby boys and one for a baby girl. In The Rose Garden, Jarboe seeks new ways of empowering museum visitors with agency that allows for a sense of narrative surprise, vulnerability, and catharsis. The inspiration for the work came in 2018 when Jarboe, at age 33, came out as trans to her family back home in Michigan, saying she uses she/her pronouns. What happened next would trigger a new gender journey for the artist: John's aunt revealed that John not only had a twin sister in the womb, but that John consumed her: “You ate her. That's why you are the way you are.” She began constructing a musical shrine to the consumed twin, named Rose, in both a stage performance and museum exhibition that welcomes audiences into a “feast of gender” through song, storytelling, and a full plate of wordplay.John's autobiographical museum exhibition "The Rose Garden" is now on view at the Fabric Workshop + Museum through Sept. 29. https://fabricworkshopandmuseum.org/pressreleases/fwm-presents-john-jarboe-the-rose-garden/The stage version, "Rose: You Are Who You Eat," makes its DC debut June 5-23 at Wooly Mammoth. https://www.woollymammoth.net/productions/rose-you-are-who-you-eat/

Extreme Genes - America's Family History and Genealogy Radio Show & Podcast
Host Scott Fisher opens the show with David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org. The guys begin with David's recent amazing discovery while visiting the National Archives. In Family Histoire News, David tells the story of a pre-photographic era artist from Virginia whose silhouettes from 1803 to 1812 have been digitized. Then, a treasure trove of Neanderthal tools and remnants has been discovered. David has details. Next, one of the more bizarre stories you'll hear anytime soon is about a giant meatball that contains DNA from the Wooly Mammoth and other extinct creatures. President Biden is learning about his ancestry in Ireland. And a kitchen renovation in England has revealed some insane 17th century artwork! Next, Fisher visits with Jewish researcher Kathryne Thorne from sponsor Legacy Tree Genealogists. Kathryne will explain why your Russian Jewish ancestry may not be so Russian after all. She also explains the challenges of Eastern European Jewish research. Fisher then talks with author Anne Hansen about her book “Buried Secrets- Looking for Frank and Ida.” These were Anne's grandparents who apparently had no past! Hear about Anne's research process and how she writes in a fascinating genre called “Creative Non-Fiction.” David then returns for another round of Ask Us Anything. That's all this week on Extreme Genes, America's Family History Show!
