We kick off a fresh new decade for Amblin with our last - at least for now - Clint Eastwood movie, the 2010 supernatural drama HEREAFTER. Our Clint journey began with something of a surprising gem with The Bridges of Madison County, and to bookend our experience with Mr. Eastwood we also get a film full of surprises; a meditative, pragmatic  look at belief, grief and questions of life and death. We get into it all, from Peter Morgan's triptych screenplay, the range of performances, its occasionally bizarre swings, to Charles Dickens and Pizza Express. TRIGGER WARNING: In the episode we discuss matters of grief, loss and death - and particularly on the experience of losing loved ones.Follow the podcast on Twitter (@RamblinAmblin), Instagram (@ramblinamblinpod) and Blusky (@ramblinamblin.bsky.social). Given the choice Peter Morgan would rather be spending time with his horses than standing around with a mobile phone. He very kindly made an exception for us last week, and we've been able to capture some of his recollections of a life with horses. Peter talks firstly about his talented galloper Burrandana whose first up win at Gundagai recently proved he's on track for a TAB Highway mission. The veteran trainer talks of Burrandana's troublesome feet. Peter says he actually bred the horse. He looks back on Burrandana's form line with special mention of the Wagga win that was taken off him. A substance used on another horse in the stable showed up in Burrandana's post race swab. Pete says a very hefty fine ensued. The trainer talks of Burrandana's five TAB Highway attempts. He hasn't been able to win one yet, but he's knocking on the door. Peter speaks of Burrandana's owners, long time clients David Lloyd and Geoff Miller. He mentions another recent winner from the stable in Unique Prince who's due back in work following a break. Peter looks back on early days in Melbourne under the tutelage of his grandfather Frank Kernaghan. He says Frank was a skilful trainer who was rarely without a handy horse. He had one very talented hurdler. He says one piece of advice offered by his grandfather has remained with him over half a century. Peter was apprenticed to Frank Kernaghan and had a short stint as a jockey. He rates his talents in the saddle. He talks of the legendary jockeys he got to know in the 1960's. He says one of them took an interest in his progress. During his apprenticeship at Flemington Peter got to know some famous trainers. He makes mention of a couple. Peter says he eventually borrowed boxes from his grandfather to get his own training career under way. He runs through a list of horses who helped to get him up and running as a professional trainer. Peter moved to Albury in 1974 and brought with him a promising apprentice jockey. The trainer acknowledges other talented jockeys who've given him good service since moving to the Riverina. Peter says the art of horse training has changed dramatically in recent times. He talks of the accessibility of racetracks from his Wagga base. Peter mentions some of the trainers he's most admired. In naming the best horse he's seen in six decades, the veteran plumps unequivocally for Tobin Bronze. We share a few memories of the great horse. The laconic trainer doesn't waste words in taking us back over his journey in racing.

Each year, a fund manager is added to the Hall of Fame. It's an illustrious list, including only the best of the best Australian funds management talent - the likes of Olev Rahn, Kerr Neilson, Peter Morgan, Anton Tagliaferro, Catherine Allfrey and more.  Given another name will be added to the list later this month, we've called on the big guns - Hall of Fame alumni Chris Kourtis from Ellerston Capital and Matt Williams from Airlie Funds Management, who were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018 and 2022 respectively.  With a unique opportunity to have two Hall of Famers in one room, Livewire decided that the best use of their talent would be to pick apart each other's highest-conviction stock picks.  So, in this episode, Matt and Chris share their best ideas today - and joyfully point out the holes in each other's theses.  Note: This episode was recorded on Tuesday the 8th of October 2024. "Russia has been an empire for so long, she doesn't know how to be a country." This line from Peter Morgan's new play, Patriots, captures the story of Russian kingmaker Boris Berezovsky and his mysterious death in England. On the day Putin was inaugurated for his fifth term, Andrea attended a performance of Patriots with a former colleague of Paul Klebnikov, the American journalist and author of Godfather of the Kremlin: The Decline of Russia in the Age of Gangster Capitalism. Klebnikov was gunned down in Moscow in 2004, likely on Berezovsky's orders. In this chilling episode of Gaslit Nation, Russian mafia expert Olga Lautman and European analyst Monique Camarra of the Kremlin File podcast join Andrea to discuss the latest leadership shake-up in Russia's disastrous invasion of Ukraine, the forces behind Vladimir Putin's rise to power, and the latest threats from Russia's mafia state, including against Olga and her fearless human rights work. Western leaders must wake-up and do more to protect those on the frontlines, fighting for our democracy, more than the institutions failing us.  The discussion with Kremlin File begins around the 18-minute mark and is exclusive to our subscribers at the Truth-teller tier and higher. In the opening segment, Andrea reads comments from Gaslit Nation subscribers at the Democracy Defender tier and higher on our recent coverage of Israel and Palestine. Thrilling political drama. Collective Imagination. Playing Putin.  Patriots on Broadway is a political thriller written by Peter Morgan, writer of The Crown. You don't need to know much about politics to be wrapped up in this electric drama to understand what's happening in the world and on stage, especially with a little use of collective imagination. Lets dive into a little about what makes Will Keen's (Putin) process and approach to this play, which also happens to be his Broadway debut. Will Keen has just closed the West End transfer of Peter Morgan's Patriots, directed by Rupert Goold, for which he won the Olivier Award for Supporting Actor last year. He most recently wrapped “My Lady Jane” and the second series of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” both for Amazon, as well as indie feature Borderland opposite Felicity Jones and Mark Strong. He is currently on screens in “The Gold” (BBC1/Viacom), “Ridley Road” (BBC), and “The Pursuit of Love” (BBC) opposite Andrew Scott and Emily Beecham. His other TV credits include “His Dark Materials” seasons 1 and 2, “The Crown” seasons one and two, “Genius,” “Picasso,” “Wolf Hall” and “The Musketeers.” Stage credits include Ghosts, Waste (Almeida); Quartermaine's Terms (Wyndham's Theatre); The Arsonists (Royal Court); and Mary Stuart (National Theatre). In 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the new Russia belongs to its oligarchs—and no one is more powerful than billionaire Boris Berezovsky. When an eventual successor to President Boris Yeltsin is needed, Berezovsky turns to the little-known deputy mayor of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin. But soon Putin's ruthless rise threatens Berezovsky's reign, setting off a riveting, near-Shakespearean confrontation between the two powerful, fatally flawed men. Tony® and Emmy® Award nominee Michael Stuhlbarg stars as Berezovsky and Will Keen reprises his Olivier Award-winning turn as Putin in PATRIOTS, a shockingly timely history play from Peter Morgan, creator of “The Crown.” Don't miss this strictly limited engagement of Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold's kinetic, exhilarating production, which reveals to us all how Russia's post-Soviet machinations continue to shape our world to this day. Patriots is playing at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre through June 23rd. https://patriotsbroadway.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Reageren? 162: Harry and Meghan called Charles on his birthday, Kate's golden thread speech

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 4:45 We were off for three weeks due to my health. I watched the docuseries The Billionaire, the Butler and the Boyfriend on Netflix, about L'oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt. She reminds Chandra of the late great Duchess of Alba. Royals: Minutes (4:45) to 19:30 The Earthshot Awards and the Kenyan Tour were flops. King Charles had his 75th birthday on November 14th. Courtiers told Roya Nikkhah at the Times that Charles invited Harry to his 75th birthday party but Harry “snubbed” the invite. This was an obvious move by the palace to deflect from the mediocre Kenyan tour. A day later, the Archewell spokesperson went on the record to say Harry had not been invited and so there was no “snub.” Charles supposedly wanted Harry to call him for his birthday. Both Harry and Meghan called and talked to him along with sending a little happy birthday video with their kids. It definitely sounded like the palace briefed the media but then they did what they always do and claimed Harry and Meghan were the source. Kate gave a speech about early childhood as part of a symposium. They previewed it in The Telegraph and made it sound so groundbreaking. However it was super generic and basic like everything she does. I remember the Shaping Us claymation video they did earlier this year. Omid Scobie's Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy's Fight for Survival is out on November 28th. His last book, Finding Freedom, came out in August, 2020 and that was an international bestseller. We've been covering the excerpts from the book which were published in People Magazine. Harry's family snubbed him after the Queen died and worked to exclude Meghan. We heard some of this before but not the extent of it. The press claimed that Charles told Harry about the Queen dying but as Harry explained in Spare, he found out from the press as he was on a plane when it happened. Scobie also wrote that William sees Harry as a defector and that he thinks Harry and Meghan blindsided their family by going public with their issues. William also thinks that Harry is brainwashed by therapists and that he's California and self-important. Harry still has warmth for Charles though and that came through in Spare. Chandra thinks Camilla would rather they didn't talk.  The Daily Mirror claimed that Scobie timed his book excerpt release to overshadow Kate's big girl speech. They royals are panicking about the book. The first half of The Crown season six is out now. We wonder how Peter Morgan will show Will and Kate's love story and if he'll just go with the official version. Comments of the week: Minutes (19:30) to end Chandra's comment of the week is from Berkeleyfarm on the post where William calls Harry Californian and self important. My comment of the week is from Jane on the post with Travis Kelce's old tweets. Thanks for listening bitches!
