A Note from James:Oh my gosh, one of my favorite guests ever: Ben Mezrich.Ben wrote Bringing Down the House, which became the movie 21. He wrote The Accidental Billionaires, which became The Social Network. And now his latest page-turner, Checkmate, is about one of the most explosive scandals in modern sports: the Hans Niemann chess cheating controversy that took over the world. You remember the story. Magnus Carlsen, the greatest chess player of all time, loses to this completely arrogant, egotistical 19-year-old bad boy of chess. Then Magnus accuses him of cheating. This had basically never happened before at that level in chess. What followed was a viral meltdown: the infamous anal beads tweet, death threats, lawsuits, chess.com, Netflix documentaries, and a chess world at war with itself.Ben spent over a year with Hans Niemann. He got access to Magnus's camp, chess.com, and the drama behind the chessboards. So we talk about whether Hans actually cheated that day, the insane rise of online chess during COVID, the world of prodigies, the generational clash inside elite chess, and how one suspicious game nearly destroyed a young player's career. So welcome to one of my favorite guests, Ben Mezrich.Episode Description:James talks with bestselling author and screenwriter Ben Mezrich about Checkmate, his new book on the Magnus Carlsen–Hans Niemann chess cheating scandal. It's classic Mezrich territory: brilliant young people, high-stakes competition, huge money, a gray area between genius and rule-breaking, and a story that becomes much bigger than the facts alone. The conversation is especially strong because James knows the chess world firsthand. He was a master-level player, helped build early internet chess infrastructure, knows many of the top players, and has commentated on Norway Chess. That gives the interview a different texture: Ben brings the reporting and the narrative access, while James brings the chess context and the ability to test the story move by move. They talk about Hans's rise, Magnus's suspicion, chess.com's cheating algorithms, why online cheating is different from over-the-board cheating, the role of the infamous anal beads tweet, and the psychological cost of being publicly accused without definitive evidence. The question underneath the whole episode is not just “Did Hans cheat?” It's: what happens when reputation, genius, technology, money, and suspicion all collide on one chessboard? What You'll Learn:Why the Carlsen–Niemann scandal became a global story far beyond the chess world. How Ben Mezrich got access to Hans Niemann, chess.com, Magnus's camp, and the hidden details around the scandal. Why cheating online is easier to detect than many people think, while over-the-board cheating may be harder to catch. Why Magnus's accusation is both serious and complicated, even without definitive public evidence. How the anal beads rumor actually started—and why it turned a chess controversy into an internet phenomenon. Why Hans Niemann's comeback to elite chess is so unusual after that level of reputational damage. How Ben thinks about stories involving ambition, genius, scams, gray areas, and young people breaking rules.Timestamped Chapters:[02:00] Preview: Hans Niemann, Magnus Carlsen, and the cheating accusation[02:59] A Note from James: Ben Mezrich returns[04:17] James's chess background and connection to the story[04:45] Ben's year embedded with Hans Niemann[05:00] Why elite chess players have such unusual personalities[05:42] Why chess carries cultural weight[06:15] Why the scandal exploded worldwide[07:44] Chess.com, streaming, and the billion-dollar chess economy[08:12] The Mezrich formula: genius, ambition, gray areas, and scandal[09:49] Online cheating vs. over-the-board cheating[10:29] Why technology has changed cheating in chess[11:44] The reputational risk of cheating over the board[12:37] Why top-20 chess status matters financially[13:12] Hans Niemann's unusually fast rise[14:00] COVID, online chess, and Hans's obsessive tournament grind[15:49] Suspicious patterns, livestreams, and uncertainty[17:09] Hans's history of online cheating[17:33] Hans living alone in New York as a teenager[18:42] Not getting into Harvard and resetting his life around chess[19:35] James admits he may have been the first person to cheat online[20:42] Why cheating can help build a streaming reputation[21:29] How chess.com detects online cheating[22:04] Magnus's gut feeling after the Sinquefield Cup game[23:19] Magnus's state of mind before playing Hans[24:00] The photographer incident no one knew about[25:19] Magnus confronting the photographer[26:47] Hans's body language during the game[27:32] Why Magnus felt “nobody plays me like this”[28:08] Hans's explanation of the win[29:00] The psychological battle between Hans and Magnus[29:43] Magnus's breakfast with Danny Rensch before the game[31:00] Why prior online cheating changes how opponents experience the board[31:39] Hans's belief in a “chess mafia”[32:44] Hans spiraling after the accusation[34:30] The mental health cost of cheating accusations[35:07] How the anal beads rumor became the whole story[35:41] Ben tracks down the source of the viral tweet[37:54] Could Magnus and Hans ever respect each other?[38:16] The rematch and Magnus's decisive win[39:13] Prodigies, aging, and being replaced[40:28] Why Ben thinks Magnus still believes Hans cheated[41:10] Magnus wanting to confront Hans directly[42:00] Henrik Carlsen, old-world chess honor, and suspicion[43:26] How cheating might have been possible at Sinquefield[44:49] The theory of an accomplice and the limits of evidence[46:00] Chess.com's report and what it did—and didn't—prove[47:14] The suspicious post-game interview[48:10] Why accusation without proof is still dangerous[49:45] Aging, rating decline, and the future of elite chess[51:13] Could Hans Niemann ever become number one?[52:00] Psychology, killer instinct, and the gap between top 10 and number one[53:05] How Hans makes money now[54:08] Turning chess into a stadium sport[55:33] The movie adaptation with Nathan Fielder, Emma Stone, and A24[57:35] Ben's next projects: The Social Reckoning and The Last Orbit[59:21] Ben and James on Billions[59:39] Closing thoughts on chess, storytelling, and CheckmateAdditional Resources:Checkmate: Genius, Lies, Ambition, and the Biggest Scandal in Chess by Ben MezrichBen Mezrich's official websiteChess.com's interview and coverage of Mezrich's CheckmateChess.com's 2022 Hans Niemann reportNetflix's Untold: Chess Mates, the documentary on the Carlsen–Niemann scandalFIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission decision related to the Carlsen–Niemann controversyBringing Down the House, the Ben Mezrich book adapted into 21The Accidental Billionaires, the Ben Mezrich book adapted into The Social NetworkSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Bill Burr, Mark Normand, Vic Henley, Matt Pinfield, Ben Mezrich 2/20 The final year of my radio journey holds a special place in my heart, made even more poignant by the loss of my cherished friends, Carl Ruiz and Vic Henley. Reflecting on that time, I rediscovered the pure passion and exhilaration that drew me to radio in the first place. Amidst the chaos and challenges, we found endless moments of hilarity and camaraderie. Alongside Carl, Vic, and Sherrod Small, we shared unforgettable experiences both on and off the airwaves, our tight-knit bond shining through every episode. That year also marked Carl Ruiz's meteoric rise to stardom, inspiring me to launch the Opie Radio podcast with him. I'm immensely grateful to Erock, Clubsoda Kenny, Paul, and Louis for joining us on this wild ride. Get ready to dive into the rollercoaster of emotions—the highs, the lows, and the laugh-out-loud moments—that defined my last year in radio.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Andrew joins Ben this week to talk about a particular piece of punctuation that isn't a dinkus! People have strong opinions about when and where the ellipsis should and shouldn't be used, so our hosts decided to investigate… for SCIENCE! Along the way they discovered a number of new words to share (including dinkus)! Fortunately there won't be a vocabulary quiz at the end of the show, but there will be an exploration of the use of the ellipsis in the text and dialog of comics, manga, and video games. Finally, they close the show with a couple of odd questions from Ben and some of their soon to be famous tangential discussion nonsense. 00:00:21 - Unrefrigerated, getting a Whirlpool, Kevin Meaney, and no refrigerator magnets?! 00:02:56 - Ben throws some crazy, cabinet positions, still a general, and getting over… again 00:04:53 - Birthday time travel, trust the process, meeting on Threads, and Judy Blume books 00:08:04 - Best social media wingman, and “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai…” references 00:10:00 - Ben wants to compare arcade attendant notes with streamer AdventurerJessica 00:11:47 - Visual migraines, multifactorial, “the matchy color fun game,” and accomplishment 00:14:16 - Breaking up chapters, text message teaser, a very wordy hybrid, and linguistics 00:16:45 - Greek origins, graphs, two dollar words in 1800s, and the MLA format for writing 00:20:00 - Andrew thinks it's judgmental, prescriptive versus descriptive grammar, and ain't 00:22:31 - Interesting trends in language development, dialect coaches, and Ohio is derpy 00:24:51 - Generation Alpha's meme inspired phrases, Florida man, and ellipsis use in texting 00:28:03 - Unspoken anger, punctuation usage confusion, the Mongolian ellipsis, and math 00:30:52 - Folding, nobody else cares, picking up styles, and guides for technical writing 00:35:10 - Vocabulary words of the episode: aposiopesis, cæsura, and “elision or deletion” 00:37:40 - Andrew goes off on Shakespeare, the days of Solid Snake, and fancy Breakout 00:39:46 - “Goddess of Victory: Nikke” conversations, and Zero Wing's bad translations 00:42:07 - Pac-Man eating punctuation, more frequent in Japanese media, and pauses 00:44:12 - Widening the gap, interpreting the worst, and problems deciphering body language 00:48:29 - Andrew hopes he's getting paid, the movie rights, and Ben Mezrich's strategy 00:50:32 - Who would play you in a movie about your life, and does the face include ears? 00:52:34 - Tenet, Andrew's nemesis, Inception, and Ben threatens to buy Andrew a BluRay 00:54:10 - Final thoughts, to confuse and annoy, that's it, and a hero named “The Ellipsis” Follow Andrew / Partly Robot Industries on… His website: https://partlyrobot.com/ On Instagram: https://instagram.com/partlyrobot On TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@partlyrobot On Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/partlyrobot Follow Two Vague on… Our website: https://www.twovaguepodcast.com On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/two_vague_podcast On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@twovaguepodcast For show appearance and other inquiries, contact us at: twovaguepodcast@gmail.com -AND- …for all of your PRI and 2VP merch check out the Partly Robot Industries store at TEEPUBLIC! https://www.teepublic.com/user/partly-robot-industries References, Links, and Tags Threads/IG Shout Outs for Liz, Kaja, and Jessica… (please be on the podcast)! https://instagram.com/liz_lapoint AND check out her GenXcellent Substack! https://instagram.com/booksbyblackley https://instagram.com/adventurerjessica #Podbean #DIYPodcast #ApplePodcast #VideoGames #Trivia #Comedy #Talkshow #2VP #TwoVaguePodcast #PodernFamily #InterviewShow #GamersofThreads #Gamer #PartlyRobot #PartlyRobotIndustries #TeePublic

Such:https://www.rankia.com/blog/such/6375505-87-golpe-wall-street-theveritas
Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for information about all your favorite fictional Universes. Everyone's favorite villainous character actor Giancarlo Esposito made waves by announcing he has been cast in an MCU film with the added caveat that it is not a role fans have speculated about. Actor and writer Paul Walter Hauser - who has been in the news a lot lately - is also joining the MCU in Matt Shakman's Fantastic Four movie in an unknown role. The casting news comes on the heels of Bob Iger's comments today about shrinking the volume of the MCU to three films and two television series per year. May the Fourth has come and gone, but with it Lucasfilm provided a full trailer for June's new live action series, The Acolyte. Fans of the franchise who enjoyed seeing The Phantom Menace back in theaters last weekend were also treated to an extended look at a scene from the first trailer featuring Carrie Ann Moss. James Gunn took to social media, rather than the sky, and debuted a first look at the Superman costume that will be donned by David Corenswet. Set against a Metropolis that looks to be in distress, Corenswet appears to be getting ready to go to work as the new Man of Steel. The baddest superheroes around will soon be back. The Boys Season 4 trailer dropped this week showcasing a crossover with characters from Gen V. Adapt Deez, a brand new season of GateCrashers, is dedicated to appreciating media adaptations in all their many forms! From the classic book-to-movie adaptations to the many iterations associated and in-between, episodes of Adapt Deez will focus on a specific property and its (officially licensed) adaptations. Not simply a recounting of the differences and similarities between each adaptation, Adapt Deez aims to highlight the ways in which each iteration shines and how its individual media-specific properties—such as film scores, casting, and packaging—elevate the material and affect the way each work is received. In today's episode, Amanda, Amir, and Jon discuss the Academy Award-winning movie The Social Network. The film—which received eight nominations at the 83rd Academy Awards, including for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for leading man Jesse Eisenberg, and won for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing—released in 2010 from Sony Pictures, and was directed by David Fincher. The screenplay was written by Aaron Sorkin, and was adapted from The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal, a work of narrative nonfiction by Ben Mezrich that was published in 2009 by Doubleday. The Social Network tells the story of the founding of social media service Facebook in 2004 by Harvard college students Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes, and Andrew McCollum. Focusing primarily on the relationship—and fall out—between Zuckerberg, played by Eisenberg, and Saverin, portrayed by Andrew Garfield in what would become his international breakthrough role, The Social Network spans several years from Facebook's inception to the depositions between Zuckerberg and Saverin, and Zuckerberg and Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss (Armie Hammer/Josh Pence), twins and fellow Harvard students. If you think that sounds dry, just wait until you witness Amanda, Amir, and Jon's dramatic reenactments of iconic scenes—we guarantee you'll be just as riveted by this biographical drama as we were more than a decade ago.

"...I wrote nine novels in one year, which I don't recommend to anybody out there who wants to be a writer, because my dad had basically said, ‘I won't let you starve for one year, but you have to have some level of progress.' By the end of the year, you're gonna have to go to law school or something. So I wrote and I wrote, not that there's anything wrong with law school, I just wasn't for me.…” Meet Ben and the stories he's telling at www.benmezrich.com Be the first to know of new episodes by subscribing to this show on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. What does a dramatic narrative nonfiction account of a dramatic tech CEO look like? To find out, we turn to Ben Mezrich, the author whose books have been adapted to films like 21, The Social Network, and Dumb Money. His latest, Breaking Twitter, has already been optioned by MGM. In this conversation: Ben's process for blending hard facts with informed speculation, Kara's advice for dealing with the tech titan, and predictions about Linda Yaccarino's fate. Oh, also a brainstorm about who should play Elon on the big screen: Kara envisions a classic Vince Vaughn type, Nayeema picks Brendan Fraser, and Ben throws in a Succession character — but *not* the one you'd expect! This week, Jeff and Rufus have Ben Mezrich on to talk about his "narrative non-fiction" style of writing, the impact of the film "21" on gambling, and the aspects of journalism vs. storytelling. Ben Mezrich has sold over 10 million copies of his books. And, by the way, that's not even the impressive part. The impressive part is that he sells EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS BOOKS as a movie or TV show; in fact, if Hollywood isn't interested in the treatment, he doesn't even write the book.Mezrich has gotten into this position because of a chance encounter with some MIT students, which led to his writing Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions, which led to Kevin Spacey snapping up the film rights before the book was even out, which led to the book spending over 60 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Then there was his book, The Accidental Billionaires, which David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin jumped on as Mezrich was writing the book and which, of course turned into the multi award-nominated movie The Social Network. (Mezrich is the only non-fiction author to have two adaptations open at #1 at the box office.)He's written numerous other books, including Bitcoin Billionaires and The Antisocial Network and is also a consulting producer on Billions. Oh, and his most recent book, The Midnight Ride, has an NFT component that already has over 3500 owners. So how does this happen? How does a former struggling novelist become Hollywood's go to guy pursued by designers who want to dress him for his book tours? And what is the secret to finding the sort of story that makes Hollywood salivate? It's all in this episode.GET MORE INFO ON THE POD AND OTHER STUFF BY GOING TO WWW.ONGOODAUTHORITYPOD.COM

Today's Flashback Friday is from episode 547, published last July 27 2015. Vladimir Putin's rise to the top is a Shakespearean drama. Putin the President was created by a group of wealthy businessmen to replace Boris Yeltsin. While believing they found a man who aligned with their own desires to keep the money at the top, Putin had different ideas. He successfully brought down elite families who disagreed with his politics. Russians embraced the leader and made him one of most popular Russian presidents of all time.
