I had artificial intelligence write and voice this entire 3 minute podcast (minus the intro and outro of course).I used Descript to create a synthesized version of my voice. This required me reading 30 minutes of copy, taken, interestingly enough, from a Planet Earth II script. (Also, I had to read it twice because I had the wrong mic selected the first time - it happens to the best of us). Each time, it took Descript about 24 hours to send back the new AI version of my voice. I can type text, and it will be read in my own voice.Next, I went to Chat GPT, and prompted it to write me a 3 minute podcast about the pros and cons of AI in podcasting. What you'll hear is their script, minus of course the podcast stereotype features, like the name of the show, and unnecesssary musical transitions. There are a couple moments where the audio hiccups, and it doesn't always get the inflection totally right. But overall, I find it quite impressive. Can you tell that it was AI and not me? Sure. But not by a lot. The script follows here.Questions about podcasting, AI, or both? Email me. jag@jagindetroit.com.Script:Nearly everything in this podcast is AI generated. I used Descript to create a synthesized version of my voice, by reading a 30 minute script. Then I asked Chat GPT to write me a 3 minute podcast exploring the pros and cons of AI in podcasting. It's only lightly edited. Enjoy.Artificial intelligence has made significant advancements in recent years, and the podcast industry has not been left behind. Let's start by looking at the pros of AI in podcasting."One of the most notable benefits of AI in podcasting is content creation. AI-powered tools can transcribe, summarize, and even edit audio recordings, saving podcasters a considerable amount of time and effort. These tools can automatically generate show notes, enabling hosts to focus more on creating compelling content rather than spending hours on administrative tasks.Additionally, AI can enhance the listening experience for podcast audiences. With machine learning algorithms, AI can analyze listener behavior, preferences, and feedback. This data allows podcast platforms to offer personalized recommendations to their users. By suggesting relevant shows and episodes, AI helps listeners discover new content aligned with their interests, broadening their podcasting horizons.Furthermore, AI can improve accessibility in podcasting. Through automatic transcription and closed captioning services, listeners with hearing impairments can engage with podcast content more easily. Transcripts also benefit non-native English speakers, those who prefer reading, or individuals in noisy environments where listening may be challenging. Now, let's consider the cons of AI in the podcast industry. One concern revolves around the potential loss of human touch and authenticity. While AI transcription and editing tools can expedite workflows, they may lack the nuanced understanding and emotional connection that human editors or producers bring. It's crucial for podcasters to strike a balance between AI automation and preserving the human touch that makes their shows special.Another issue to consider is algorithmic bias. AI systems learn from vast amounts of data, and if that data contains biases, it can unintentionally perpetuate them. In podcasting, this could affect recommendations, leading to a lack of diversity or reinforcing existing inequalities. Careful attention must be given to the training data and the algorithms used to ensure fair and inclusive content recommendations.Lastly, privacy concerns arise as AI collects and processes vast amounts of user data for personalization. It's essential for podcast platforms to be transparent about their data collection practices, provide clear privacy policies, and obtain informed consent from users before utilizing their data. Safeguarding listener privacy should be a top priority."That concludes our exploration of how AI is shaping the podcast industry. Despite the challenges, AI offers exciting possibilities for content creation, enhanced listener experiences, and improved accessibility. As technology continues to evolve, it's crucial to strike a balance between the advantages of automation and the preservation of human connection.

Gavin Thurston is the award-winning Blue Planet II and Planet Earth II cameraman who worked with Sir David Attenborough for over 20 projects. In this podcast, he shares with us the extraordinary and adventurous true stories of becoming a legendary cameraman. I met Gavin in Dubai on his book tour at Emirates Literature Festival, and instantly I was moved by his stories and his kind personality. Gavin has been a wildlife photographer for over thirty years. Against a backdrop of modern world history, he's lurked in the shadows of some of the world's remotest places in order to capture footage of the animal kingdom's finest: prides of lions, silverback gorillas, capuchin monkeys, brown bears, grey whales, penguins, mosquitoes - you name it he's filmed it. From journeys to the deepest depths of the Antarctic Ocean and the wide expanse of the Saharan deserts, to the peaks of the Himalayas and the wild forests of the Congo, Gavin's experiences describe much more than just the incredible array of animals he's filmed. He invites you to come inside the cameraman's hidden world and discover the hours spent patiently waiting for the protagonists to appear; the inevitable dangers in the wings and the challenges faced and overcome; and the heart-warming, life-affirming moments the cameras miss as well as capture. His passion for the great outdoors and the landscape started with landscape photography and we chat about his transition into moving images and the lifestyle and work of a professional cameraman. Alongside this we discuss the challenges both technically and mentally of being on location for months on end waiting for spectacular animal behaviour or indeed witnessing natural wonders of the world. We touch on hot topics including the impact of climate change and tourism, alongside some tips for how to break into this industry. Tom is also a passionate landscape photographer and we discuss his free approach to this shooting style. Thanks as ever to WEX Photo Video & Fotospeed for supporting the show. Click here to buy: https://adbl.co/2Ji40v0 From Gavin Thurston, the award-winning Blue Planet II and Planet Earth II cameraman, comes extraordinary and adventurous true stories of what it takes to track down and film our planet's most captivating creatures. Gavin has been a wildlife photographer for over thirty years. During that time he's lurked in the shadows of some of the world's remotest places in order to capture footage of the animal kingdom's finest: prides of lions, silverback gorillas, capuchin monkeys, brown bears, grey whales, penguins, mosquitoes - you name it he's filmed it. As president and CEO of Bleeding Fingers Music and Extreme Music, Russell Emanuel is a trailblazing leader, innovator, and producer in the music industry. Bleeding Fingers is one of the leading producers of quality-crafted film and television scores in the world, bolstered by a unique creative association and business partnership with industry legend, Hans Zimmer, and his long-term business partner, Steve Kofsky. Russell’s vision for Bleeding Fingers led to a thriving collaboration with David Attenborough and BBC on the music for Planet Earth II – a score that contributed to the series’ record-breaking viewership, international acclaim, and BAFTA and Emmy nominations for Bleeding Fingers’ work. This paved the way to his most recent project - producing the score for the highly-anticipated BBC One natural history landmark, Blue Planet II, which premieres later this year. Alongside his work producing the series’ orchestral score, Russell creatively produced a track for the prequel, titled “(ocean) bloom,” featuring a collaboration with Radiohead, one of the world’s most acclaimed rock bands, and Hans Zimmer. Under Russell’s leadership, Bleeding Fingers has amassed an expert crew of over a dozen in-house composers leading to an unmatched balance of musical creativity, collaboration and efficiency. Bleeding Fingers’ music has strengthened countless projects, with their prolific and diverse output including scores featuring sweeping orchestral pieces, industrial rock and electronic sounds, Americana, and everything in between. Operating out of their twenty-studio Santa Monica facility on the same campus as Remote Control Productions, the company is producing carefully-tailored scores for some of the most acclaimed series on television. In addition to Planet Earth II and Blue Planet II, Bleeding Fingers’ musical efforts include Netflix’s Roman Empire, Amazon’s American Playboy, and Crackle’s Snatch. Before creating Bleeding Fingers, Russell had already made a name for himself as a titan within the composing industry, thanks to the tremendous success of Extreme Music, which he co-founded in 1997. Extreme Music was conceived as a business that would provide production music for projects that did not have access their own composers, while retaining incredibly high standards of passion and quality. The company soon became famous, not only for the music it offered, but also for the notorious punk energy and marketing that Russell channeled through the company (most famously, he sent condoms to numerous industry professionals, printed with the massage “the only safe thing you will ever get from us”). Russell grew the company to such a large success that it was purchased by SonyATV in 2008 for $110 million with Emanuel still remaining as the active CEO. Russell is not only an entrepreneur, but an experienced musician within his own right. For many years, he was a session musician, producer and manager, most notably managing The Jam and Stiff Little Fingers. He’s also collaborated with musical heavy-hitters such as George Martin, Snoop Dogg, Rodney Jerkins, and Quincy Jones, and spent an early stint of his career engineering at Abbey Road Studios. Russell currently lives in Los Angeles. When not working, he likes to perform with his twisted pop-hit cover band "Courtesy Flush,” ride his Harley Davidson and serve as a chauffeur and entertainment officer to his wife and five children.

Colorists that worked on films from Lord of the Rings to Saving Private Ryan, TV shows NCIS Los Angeles and Planet Earth II, and commercials for Coca-Cola and Levi’s. We delved into many different topics, like collaborating with DP’s, working in foreign countries, and emerging technologies like HDR. In this podcast, I’ve included some of my favorite insights from 2017: Peter Doyle: Working on films that vary visually and conceptually Dave Abrams: HDR and it’s effect on calibration Warren Eagles: Film stocks and how they relate to digital cameras today Bob Festa: Working with clients and getting them to come back for more Alexis Van Hurkman: Techniques for working with HDR Dale Grahn: Developing looks for The Ring and Saving Private Ryan Juan Cabrera: Collaborating with Directors and DP’s in the suite Adam Inglis: Working with nature footage in Planet Earth II Patrick Woodard: Being flexible and working efficiently in television Vanessa Taylor: Working in a foreign country and overcoming language barriers This episode is sponsored by: Colorist Society International For more information on how you can become a member, visit, www.coloristsociety.com. Jacob Shea and Jasha Klebe are two composers who have produced exemplary work early on in their careers. Both Jacob and Jasha got their starts working with some of the most notable composers working today including Steve Jablonsky, Lorne Balfe and of course Hans Zimmer. The two of them found themselves working together when BBC Earth came knocking on the doors of Bleeding Fingers Music with their new show Planet Earth II. Hear Jacob and Jasha share their backgrounds and paths to film composing, and hear them discuss their approach to scoring Planet Earth II. They talk about the Bleeding Fingers Music model and how it has become a new platform for composers to become attached to some amazing projects. Go in-depth into how they split scoring duties on Planet Earth II, and the approach they took to scoring a massive TV nature documentary series. Jacob Shea and Jasha Klebe have already carved their own paths as musical storytellers early in their career, and Planet Earth II further demonstrates their talents. This interview shines a light on two emerging talents who without a doubt have many more stories to tell. Comedian/writer/editor Sasha Feiler talks to us about DOG SPORTS. We get into how great her dog Spoon is at dog sports. We talk about "nose work." We talk about "dog agility." We talk about training. We talk about how dog owners in the world of dog sports can be, ironically, catty. We also touch very briefly on how Russia views WWII, as seen from Sasha's childhood in Siberia. But it's mostly dog sports. This is one of our favorite segments ever. Also Anthony discusses Planet Earth II and Will discusses Letters to Cleo's new song.

Nature documentaries and wildlife films transport us to places in the world that still feel wild, but what if the wilderness they present is staged? What if, in order to capture nature’s unvarnished beauty and conflict, filmmakers have to engage in a bit of fakery? In this episode we examine how deception is used to enhance the drama of nature documentaries, from Disney’s Oscar-winning film White Wilderness, to the incredible footage featured in the BBC’s Planet Earth II. Plus, we own up to some of the production tricks we use to make this podcast.
It's about Planet Earth 2!
It's 160 degrees outside, a massive sandstorm could appear at any moment, and you're trying to capture footage of a pack of lions chasing a giraffe. They're bigger, faster, and scarier than you are. Oh, and you've been out in the desert for weeks, waiting for this exact moment. Don't screw it up. That, evidently, is what it's like to be a member of the crew for Planet Earth II. And as we watched the show, we found ourselves wondering how it all comes together.
A lot has changed since Planet Earth wowed audiences with new images of the globe's wildlife ten years ago. Now, Planet Earth II is taking advantage of advances in technology and science to bring even more stunning images to audiences. Also: Why "Iron Fist" is Marvel's first Netflix flop.

Brett here -- I made a difficult decision recently, and dumped seven of the shows I watch. I will tell you which shows, and why. Also, Planet Earth II started last week, it is amazing, and we shall discuss it. Finally, Jeff makes his predictions for the Oscars!

"One of the differentiators between the original Planet Earth series and this series is the technology," executive producer Mike Gunton told the Television Critics Association earlier this month. Planet Earth II producers spent over three years, 40 different countries, 117 filming trips, and a total of 2089 shooting days creating this jaw-dropping look at our planet. I wanted to find out more about these significant advances in filming technology and how they are enhancing our understanding of the natural world, not to mention what it's like working with the inspirational Sir David Attenborough. So before, Planet Earth II Premieres Saturday, February 18 on BBC AMERICA I invited Mike Gunton onto the show today who works for BBC Worldwide and the BBC as The Creative Director of Factual and The Natural History Unit.
