Book Vs. Movie: Billy Elliot The 2000 Film Vs the 2014 Musical Live“Musicals in March!”The Margos continue “Musicals in March” with the film & stage show of Billy Elliot. Both tell the inspiring story of a working-class boy in 1980s northern England who discovers a passion for ballet during the UK miners' strike, but they differ in tone and presentation. The film, directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Lee Hall (based on his play Dancer), is a gritty drama starring Jamie Bell, featuring a rock and pop soundtrack. It focuses on Billy's journey and his family's struggles, earning critical acclaim and multiple BAFTA and Oscar nominations. In contrast, the musical expands the story with more extensive dance sequences and fantasy elements, highlighting the miners' plight. It includes music by Elton John and offers more character development and stylized theatrical moments. The musical has won numerous Olivier and Tony Awards.Which version did we prefer? In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing BILLY ELLIOTT (2000), from writer Lee Hall, the film is directed by Stephen Daldry. Despite the negative views and prejudices of those around him, the youngest son, Billy (Jamie Bell), of a working class English family finds himself irresistibly drawn to the practice of ballet. The film clocks in at 1 h and 50 m, is rated R and we watched on the TCM app but can be found streaming on Peacock and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Stranger Things: a bonafide telly phenomenon. The Duffer Brothers' Netflix series has won an army of diehard fans across all demographics with its big budget mix of horror, fantasy and 80s nostalgia that makes sure never to skimp on character or storytelling. Kate Trefry's been a writer on the series since season two and is currently wrapping up the fifth and final season, expected to be released next year. She's also written its stage production and prequel, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, working with the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne and Stephen Daldry to bring Hawkins to the Phoenix Theatre in London. As well as a slew of five-star reviews, Stranger Things: The First Shadow recently picked up the best new entertainment or comedy play at the Oliviers. Our Mick has also seen and been blown away by it, so was chuffed to bits to catch up with Kate a couple of days after the awards. They're chatting Stranger Things (obviously), the play and the series, being an outsider, winning hearts and minds, new motherhood, and the birth of evil. Visit phoenixtheatre.co.uk for tickets.

Blake, Kofi & Rich take a look at one of the most popular British films in history.Directed by Stephen Daldry, "Billy Elliott" follows an 11 year-old boy (Jamie Bell) from a working-class family who discovers a talent and passion for ballet while his father (Gary Lewis) and older brother (Jamie Draven) struggle through the historic 1984-85 UK miners strike. Under the direction of a local dance teacher (Julie Walters), Billy's talent develops to the point where he earns an audition with the National Ballet School. As a young dancer, dance grad and one-time professional, Blake identifies with much of what Billy goes through. Blake shares his own stories of scorn and misunderstanding related to gender conformity. We also look at the profound love and grief experienced by Billy's dad Jackie - and consider the importance (and challenge) of seeing your children for who they really are. #fatherhood #billyelliottmovie #parenthood #raisingyoungmen #raisingstrongchildren #movies #growingup

Joseph and Jamie discuss Stephen Daldry's critically panned drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2011): how the film treats its sensitive subject matter, the way it was adapted from the book, and how it managed to get a Best Picture nomination despite its poor critical performance.
If anyone on this planet is a natural born cinematographer, it might just be Chris Menges. His earthiness and pragmatism combined with his uncanny, innate sensibility for the moving image are what makes his films special: Kes, The Killing Fields and The Mission, to name just a few. If you haven't seen them, then trust us that they are among the most beautiful movies ever made. Chris Menges has seen a lot of adventure; he's been all over the world, and he has stories. In this wide-ranging discussion we talk about the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson's influence on Menges' work and the importance of "walking the streets." From his early days in documentary to his later work with directors like Neil Jordan, Stephen Frears, Stephen Daldry and Sean Penn, Menges is a true master of observation... and he's picked up a couple Oscars along the way. Justin Martin Ammar Haj Ahmad Justin Martin, co-director, and Ammar Haj Ahmad, one of the principal actors of “The Jungle,” a play by Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson, at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco through May 18, 2019, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. The Jungle tells the story of a refugee camp near Calais, France, where people fleeing violence in their own countries came while they awaited asylum in England. The camp lasted around nine months, and during that time, developed its own culture and community. Playwrights Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson opened a theatre there, and took notes on the people and events during the Jungle's existence. Co-directors Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin joined with the playwrights, and actors representing the various countries in the camp, and created an environmental theatre piece, which received accolades in earlier productions at the Old Vic in London and St. Ann's Warehouse in New York, before coming to San Francisco. Justin Martin has worked as associate director with Stephen Daldry beginning with the national tour of the musical “Billy Elliot” and has served as second unit director for several episodes of Daldry's Netflix series, “The Crown.” Ammar Haj Ahmad began his acting career in Syria and came to Britain to work, and then found himself a refugee and unable to return. Now a British citizen, he was one of the original workshop members of the play “The Jungle.” Curran theatre website The post Interview: Justin Martin & Ammar Haj Ahmad, “The Jungle” at the Curran appeared first on KPFA.
