I was forced to spend most of my boyhood time (5 years old-6 years old) in the infamous red-light district Washington D.C. (14th Street NW, Logan Circle.) due to the women sex workers' "thing" for me.

“In the 1970s and 1980s, a portion of 14th Street became known primarily for its red-light district. Several strip clubs and massage parlors were concentrated roughly between New York Avenue and K Street, while prostitutes plied their trade around Logan Circle. However, rising land values eventually pushed out the adult businesses. The Source Theatre, founded by Bart Whiteman in 1977, was given some credit for the area's revival. Whiteman stood outside the theater to escort people inside in order to make them feel safer.[5] During the 1980s and 1990s, Logan Circle, although dominated by Victorian homes that had survived mostly untouched by redevelopment or riots, was considered an unsafe neighborhood by many due to overt drug use and prostitution that existed in the neighborhood.[17][18] During this period, property values in the area began to increase, but issues of homelessness in the area came to the forefront. Fourteenth Street, NW became widely viewed as Washington's red light district. It also became an area for small, independent theater companies that acquired relatively cheap space north of the circle.” -Wikipedia. “I sat on the benches, walked on the streets, moved on the grass, and roamed the parks within Logan Circle, Shaw neighborhood, The U Street Corridor, and 14th Street NW in Washington D.C. as a five-year old in the late 1990's. I frequently encountered, conversed with, saw the sex work, saw the sex workers, and hung out with pimps, brothel keepers, clients, customers, madams, procurers, and panderers the most in Logan Circle, The Shaw neighborhood, The U Street Corridor, and 14th Street NW at that time. I saw pimping, brothel keeping, madaming, procuring, pandering, customering, and clienteling the most at Logan Circle, 14th Street NW, Shaw neighborhood, and The U Street Corridor.” Antonio Myers. “Procuring, pimping, or pandering is the facilitation or provision of a prostitute or other sex worker in the arrangement of a sex act with a customer.[1] A procurer, colloquially called a pimp (if male) or a madam (if female, though the term pimp has often been used for female procurers as well) or a brothel keeper, is an agent for prostitutes who collects part of their earnings. The procurer may receive this money in return for advertising services, physical protection, or for providing and possibly monopolizing a location where the prostitute may solicit clients. Like prostitution, the legality of certain actions of a madam or a pimp vary from one region to the next.” -Wikipedia. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Welcome to the 3rd episode of Discover St. Cloud Florida. We will start with St. Thomas Aquinas on 900 Brown Rd in Saint Cloud. They are having a fall festival starting on Friday, November 12th, and running through the weekend. Friday's festivities start at 5:00pm and go to 9:00pm where there will go food trucks. The festivities continue into the weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday runs from 9am - 9pm and Sunday run from 9am – 5pm. There will be games, food, dancing, entertainment, rummage sale, and other fun activities. The focus on Saturday will be Salsa dancing and Sunday's focus is on the entire family. The November and December market events will focus on the Holidays so you will see a lot more Christmas vendors. There are so many great local vendors for people to support. There are vendors who do handmade soaps, woodworking, jewelry, home décor, and so many more. One of our favorite local vendors is Gypsy Waves Studio. Hart Art is another local vendor where Jeanine purchased an early Christmas present for somebody. They hand paint everything there and do custom orders which is what Jeanine had done. She loved what they did for her. Z & Q is a children's boutique store in downtown Saint Cloud on New York Avenue, and they have a mailbox for letters to Santa. All of the letters put into their mailbox actually get a response from Santa himself. We also wanted to give everything a preview for what's to come in December in St. Cloud leading up to Christmas. On Friday, December 3rd there will be the Christmas Tree Lighting in downtown Saint Cloud right in front of City Hall. There will be singing, crafts and even an Elf Driving School. The next big event in December is on Saturday, December 4th and it is the St. Cloud Christmas Parade which is put on by the Chamber of Commerce. This is a big event for our city and it's fun and helps our downtown businesses. On Dec. 10th and 11th from 6pm – 9pm is the “One Night in Bethlehem” event on Michigan and 19th. This will be a drive-through experience about the Christmas story. This event is put on by the St. Cloud Church of The Nazarene. They have over 70 cast members and live animals as well. Saturday, December 11th from 11am – 1pm there will be a Bluegrass Jam at The Peghorn Park. They will have live acoustic bluegrass music in the Cannery in Peghorn Park. Christmas in the Cloud will take place on Saturday, December 11th, and is hosted by Animals Inc Wildlife Preserve on 4235 Rambler Ave in St. Cloud. In this episode of Wine, Women, and Revolution Heather interviews activist and author Laurie Greene. Laurie wrote the book "Drag Queens and Beauty Queens" which tells the often overlooked LGBTQ drag history in Atlantic City and the undeniable impact drag culture had on the Miss American pageant. She discusses how people competing in both Miss America and the drag pageant Miss'd America use it to access power structures that may otherwise be denied to them in this Cis, Hetero, White, Male, Capitalist world. Now Miss's America is struggling to reconcile its more subversive roots with the goal of capitalism to make everything consumable for the bland mass audience. Only the future will tell if they will be more successful than their beauty pageant inspiration, Miss America. Transcript Auto Generated Laurie Greene 0:00But the history of this event which you would never know from looking at any press anywhere, including the Miss America page is that "show us your shoes" started because drag queens used to be at the corner of New York Avenue and the two buildings would sit up on their balconies during the parade and lean out the windows. And tease the contestants, because they saw they weren't wearing shoes and they're wearing slippers but you couldn't see their feet they would yell "show us your shoes." Heather Warburton 0:34This is Wine Women and Revolution with your host, Heather Warburton. Hi, and welcome to Wine Women and Revolution. I'm your host Heather Warburton coming at you here on Create Your Future Productions. You can find us online at your future creator. com. Follow us on all the social medias and get us wherever you get your podcasts from. Today, I'm talking to someone that's a friend of mine. They're a fellow activist from South Jersey. And specifically what we're talking about today is they're the author of the book, Drag Queens and Beauty Queens. Welcome to the show, Laurie Green. Laurie Greene 1:08Hi, thanks for having me, Heather. Heather Warburton 1:10So you're actually joining us all the way from London today. Even though you live locally here, you're all the way in London when we're recording this Laurie Greene 1:18I've been here for two weeks, I'm actually going to get out of quarantine tomorrow. And I just found out today that they're closing down the country again. So it looks like I'm gonna be in quarantine for another week. Heather Warburton 1:30Yeah, things are definitely challenging in these times of COVID. But that's not what we're here to talk about today. We're talking about Drag Queens and Beauty Queens, which is an awesome title for a book, by the way. And I think what really compelled me was you kind of tell a lot of like the not so well known history of both the Miss America pageant, which if you're local here, you know, you know, Atlantic city's tied to Miss America, and Miss'd America, which may not even be as well known, but it's getting quite popular. And one thing that really stood out to me was when I first moved to the area, I had a friend of mine who was like, Oh, I'm going watch the shoe parade for Miss America. And I'm like, Wait, what? Like this was something I did not know about living outside the area and they were like, yeah, we go and they show us their shoes. I was like, well, why do they do that? And they had no idea why. I don't know, it's just something that happens and you actually explain the history of where that all came from. Do you want to give a little like, quick teaser about what that is, before we dive into the meat of the book. Laurie Greene 2:35Well, the parade is actually called the show us your shoes parade. It is trademarked that way by the Miss America Pageant. And what happens during that parade is that the contestants get dressed up in costumes and funny costumes that spoof or somehow over emphasize the characterizations of thei

http://polaroid41.com/spring/ Wednesday April 8th, 2020 – 2:48pm. In Crown Heights, on New York Avenue between President and Union Street, my very dear friend Sarah stumbles upon a quote from Pablo Neruda that has been scratched into the sidewalk: “They can cut all the flowers, but they can never stop spring.” She thinks it's probably been there for a while, but she never noticed it before. Maybe because she didn't need it until now. She sends it to me. It's the spring of 2020 and for the first time in the 15+ years I've lived in France, what we're going through here is also what my friends and family are going through in the US. A paradoxically shared and separate experience : quarantine, isolation, confinement, distance. We are in our fourth week with no clear end in sight. In France, life started changing with the announcement of school closures on March 12th. According to the calendar, March 12th is still winter. In fact, just the week before that, I remember going to a school council meeting all bundled up in my warmest boots and an oversized sweater, braving sleet and rain. At that meeting the question of school closures was discussed as a distant and unlikely event. Little did we know… In the weeks we've been inside, Spring has come. My favorite season. This preference might come from my midwestern roots….there is nothing like the joy of spring after a long, harsh Minnesota winter. Or it might be the Parisian in me…because there is also nothing quite like the joy of spring after the dreary, gray damp and the oppressive low cloud cover of winter in Île-de-France. Either way : spring is my season. Spring is for falling in love, for stretching sleepy winter limbs, for starting over. Spring is our chance to see nature burst forth in all of her splendor and to witness her unstoppable, audacious blooming. There is a ‘rushing' energy, not in the sense of hurrying but like the rushing of a mountain stream: cold, sparkling and swollen from the thaw. Across the street from our apartment there is a big, beautiful park which is currently gated and closed. From our windows I can see the grass is growing much longer than usual and among the green, I spy hundreds of white wild daisies. At the center of the park, too far for us to see from home, there is a park within the park called “le jardin japonais” or the Japanese Gardens. I keep thinking about the cherry trees, they must be ablaze in a riot of pink right now. They're blooming just like every year, indifferent to the fact that we aren't there to admire them. There's something ironic about being trapped inside as nature roars to life outside our windows and there's something comforting about spring's disregard for the current state of human affairs. Yes, you can cut all the flowers, but you can never stop spring.

Patrick Fasano has over forty years of real estate development experience. It all started in 1974 while he was working at his first restaurant job in New Brunswick. With the savings he earned, Patrick began buying boarded up houses and renovating them. He even rented these single and multi-family homes to the staff that worked alongside him in the restaurant. The owners of the restaurant eventually invested in Mr. Fasano to begin his first business, Reliable Properties. What followed were many successful development projects across the US. Fast forward to 1998 when Pat acquired his first building in Asbury Park on Bangs Avenue. The first floor of this building he donated to the gay & lesbian community, and the 2nd floor was converted into apartments to provide housing for his contracting employees as they began rehabbing more buildings throughout the beachfront city. Over the past 15+ years Mr. Fasano has focused on developments in Asbury Park. In the past decade he built over two hundred condominium units for sale with a market value of over $50 million. Additionally he built a number of commercial spaces and restaurants such as Brando’s, The Asbury Lanes, The Wonder Bar, Plaza Tapatia, The Bond Street Complex, and Passion as well as 12 storefronts on Cookman & Mattison Avenue. We were fortunate enough to catch up with Pat for a live podcast and walking tour of his latest passion location, Atlantic City. Pat literally shouted his love for this City from the streets as we toured his development on the New York Avenue portion of the Orange Loop, home to Bourre, a New Orleans style restaurant, the home of a shipping container style hotel with 40 rooms, and a CBD dispensary along with 12 apartment units that were currently under construction. Pat has a contagious passion for his projects, which is evident in this quick interview. Perhaps most interesting in this episode is Pat's response to the question about the approval process in Atlantic City with respect to his extensive plan on New York Ave. Be on the look out for Part 2 as we look to sit down with Pat in the studio for a more extensive conversation soon!
