The market's deli section also offers prepared meals ready to be consumed on site or for takeout. A mile or so up the road, Williams Apple Grove Market recently held a soft launch. The store plans to sell hot food, cold food and cold sandwiches and will offer breakfast on weekends.  Mason County Commissioner Rick Handley said he expects other businesses to locate in the Apple Grove area once the mill goes into operation.  Read more: https://www.wvgazettemail.com/business/small-businesses-in-apple-grove-mason-county-thrive-as-nucor-steel-mill-goes-up/article_3dc0d0bd-ea40-408f-a1a6-4b4d999f5e81.html   #2 – From WVVA-TV – The Mercer County Convention and Visitors Bureau has released this year's edition of the county's visitor guide. The Pro Road National Championships are set for May 19 -26 in Charleston this year, two days longer than the national cycling event's debut in the city last year. Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau President Tim Brady said they are looking for about 100 more volunteers to serve as course marshals. Course marshals serve a key role in keeping both race participants and spectators safe. They monitor crowds along race routes to reduce risks to cyclists, provide rapid communication relating to any hazards that may arise, serve as a crossing guard along roadways operating as race courses, and act as an ambassador to spectators regarding event details. Volunteers will receive a whistle and a branded volunteer shirt. All shifts are provided with a meal and water. To sign up to volunteer or to view the race schedule and routes, visit the CVB's website. Do you know a West Virginia kid who demonstrates spirit, resilience, kindness, drive or talent? Nominate them for the next class of WV Living's Incredible Kids.  Nominations are due by April 21. Then, from April 22 to 28, readers will vote for their favorites, and the top nominees will be featured in the Summer issue of WV Living. And because they're all winners, every nominee will also be recognized in print and online and receive a special swag box. As the state animal, black bears symbolize West Virginia's wild beauty and resilience.  However, as their population expands and human activity continues to grow, encounters between people and black bears are becoming more common—especially when black bears are drawn to easy food sources. The good news is that most conflicts can be prevented. By learning a few basics, you can help keep black bears wild and communities safe. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello everyone. Welcome to another episode of The Suite Spot. This is your host, Ryan Embree. If you're listening to us or watching us on our YouTube channel, you'll see that we are not in our content creation studio in Maitland. We have hit the road for a new series, the Suite Spot Road Trip, and we are here at the Spring Hill Suites, Jacksonville Beach, Ocean Front. And I'm here with two wonderful guests joining me today, general Area General Manager Alex Reitter, and Area Director of Sales and Marketing, Samantha Pritchard. Alex. Samantha. Thank you so much for hosting us on the Suite Spot at your beautiful ocean front property. Alex Reitter: We're happy to have you. Thanks for coming out. Ryan Embree: Very excited to be here. As it is, Suite Spot tradition. One of the coolest thing about hospitality, we were talking about off camera is just our, the history, the DNA that gets built over the years. Maybe different brands, different management companies that you've been a part of. Everyone has a unique story, but it all leads us back to people serving people, right. That that's why we love hospitality. So love to hear maybe your backgrounds in hospitality and what let you here to a brand new property, which we're gonna talk about here shortly. Alex, we'll go ahead and start with you. Alex Reitter: Okay. Well, thanks Ryan. Thanks for coming out. Of course. Again. So, yeah, I think I have an interesting start in Hospitality fell into actually start out on small cruise ships. Intercoastal, I'm not even sure if you knew that Samantha. Samantha Pritchard: No. New Skills. Alex Reitter: So it was definitely a interesting start. You know, uh, intercoastal cruising, seven night trips up and down the, uh, east coast after college. You know, we did trips in Maine, Chesapeake Bay, all the way down to Florida. It was, you know, amazing experience. But when you're working six to eight weeks on a boat, nonstop, you kind of look for other options. And hotel kind of was a natural fit for me. From there, I've had a chance to actually work a courtyard down the street from this Spring Hill. And then actually a little time in the Florida Keys, uh, most recently in a Marriott in Durham, North Carolina. The weather got a little cold. It snowed a couple times on us, and we said, let's get back to Florida. So excited to be here. And excited to work with Samantha. I've only been here a couple months and ready to get the ball rolling. Ryan Embree: Well, I think you're our first guest that has got their hospitality start. I've, I've heard behind the front desk I've heard bellman. I don't know if I've ever heard on a cruise, so that's very, very cool. But it's a story that resonates probably with a lot of our hotel audience, and listeners sometimes just kind of jumping from place to place. But again, people serving people, hospitality. Samantha, you've had kind of a different journey here. Talk to us a little bit about that. Samantha Pritchard: Yeah, so I started my hospitality journey in the Convention Visitor Bureau with Visit Jacksonville. It was, it was some of the best years just learning the business, being around people that have been doing it a long time. So then I left the CVB and went out as a director of sales. So my first job on property was a director of sales, just from some of the hotel connections made dur...

Columbia's city council will hear a presentation Monday at city hall on the convention center feasibility study. It's an issue that has been discussed in Columbia for about 30 years. The feasibility study discussion will take place Monday at 5 pm at city hall, during the council's pre-meeting. Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) director Amy Schneider will be presenting that report, and she joined host Fred Parry in-studio this weekend on 939 the Eagle's “CEO Roundtable” to discuss the issue. The report she will summarize is 131 pages. A company best known as CSL, Conventions, Sports and Leisure International, was retained by CVB to conduct the nine-month feasibility study for the potential development of a convention center in Columbia. The 131-page report notes Columbia's population is growing at nearly four times the rate of the state of Missouri. Columbia currently offers about 3,600 hotel rooms, and the report notes there are only two hotels downtown. The report says Columbia attracts 1.7 million visitors annually, generating 3.8 million visit nights and more than $615-million dollars in visitor spending. The report also says that to capture 90 percent of the potential event market, a convention center in Columbia would require 13,000 square foot ballroom and 8,800 square feet of meeting space. The report also discusses the issue of funding. Ms. Schneider tells listeners this is about economic development through tourism. She also notes Columbia is missing some of the larger conventions. “Columbia is really good at the small to mid-size meetings, those 50 to 350 size meetings. If they get any bigger than that, the Wyndham Executive Center, they've changed flags now, they're really one of the only places you can hold those larger meetings,” she tells listeners. Amy Schneider grew up in northeast Missouri's Shelbina, where her father owned a feed and fertilizer store. Her first job was cleaning that store, and she also was a waitress at Shelbina's popular Skyway Café, which was best known for its biscuits and gravy. She says she's always wanted to work in hospitality. She and Mr. Parry also discussed this weekend's busy schedule with True/False and Missouri state high school wrestling championships. They also discussed the 2026 World Cup in Kansas City and what that will mean for Columbia:

Next, the former Executive Director of the Landers Center in Southaven was recently fired after 14 years but the reason raises some interesting questions. Todd Mastry says it was because he was booking too many Black artists and does not like the crowds they draw from Memphis. These statements came from the CVB and members of the Board of Supervisors. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025. West Virginia's giant salamander population serves as a monitor to the Mountain State's water quality…West Virginia Northern Community College receives a federal grant to support manufacturing education…and Weirton residents gear up for the tastiest event of the year: Weirton Restaurant Week…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – Beneath the surface of clean-flowing streams in West Virginia, a multitude of strange creatures lurk, but none is perhaps more shocking to encounter than the hellbender. Also known as the devil dog, the mud devil, and the Allegheny alligator, its names testify to the strangeness of what turns out to be a giant aquatic salamander. These strange creatures thrive in only the most healthy streams. They are thus indicators of poor water quality, a concern in parts of West Virginia where the hellbender lives. Due to the impact of disease and habitat loss, the animal is listed as a vulnerable species though groups like the New River Conservancy. The conservancy is urging people in the New River watershed and beyond to comment on a proposal by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to designate it as endangered. “Not only does the presence of hellbenders indicate the rivers we rely on for drinking water are clean,” says Andrew Downs, executive director of the conservancy, “but this sometimes-strange-looking and beautiful creature is part of the identity of our region. WVNCC is one of only 18 institutions nationwide, and the only recipient in West Virginia, to receive this funding. The grant will fund WVNCC's M.A.P.S. 2.0: Manufacturing and Production Skills Pathway for the 21st Century. The program is a next-generation, industry-aligned skills pathway designed to support the revitalized manufacturing and production industries in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle. This initiative aims to build workforce education and training capacity in the Ohio River Valley region, focusing on sustainable and scalable change to prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing and next generation energy. Scheduled from Feb. 2-8, Weirton Restaurant Week is being organized by the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce as a way to celebrate the local dining scene. Weirton bed & breakfasts team up with the local CVB to showcase the work of area artists…the new Heritage Highway joins four other scenic Mountain Rides throughout Almost Heaven…and West Virginia's Paranormal Trail gets even spookier, with four more additions…on today's daily304. #1 – From WEIRTON DAILY TIMES – Weirton area residents and visitors had an opportunity to tour three local bed and breakfasts and view a variety of art recently through a collaboration of the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau and Rivertown Inns. Rivertown Inns is an umbrella for the three bed and breakfasts — Arabian Nights, Aunt Mary's and the Sarah Miller House — which teamed for a revival of the CVB's Art Hop event. The bed and breakfast's artistic guests were James Sulkowski, an oil painter from Canonsburg, Pa., and Devin Ashmore, a photographer from Weirton. Arabian Nights owner Danielle Thomas said of the art hop, “I think it's fantastic. I love the collaboration with the other bed and breakfasts. We all refer people to each other.” An avid baker, she suggested a cookie crawl, in which visitors would be treated to cookies and other snacks made by local bakers, could be the next event for them. Heritage Highway, the new name for the 194-mile scenic loop, will lead travelers throughout the state's southern region, starting in Raleigh County, down to Wyoming, down to McDowell into Mercer County and then to Beckley. West Virginia Mountain Rides is a partnership between the Tourism and the West Virginia Department of Transportation to designate and promote the state's most scenic country roads.  Ruby and Justice praised everyone, especially the Division of Highways, that worked on these scenic routes, putting them together, cleaning them and keeping them free of potholes. Heritage Highway joins Seneca Skyway, Capitol Circle, Cranberry Corridor and Birdeye Bend as a part of the rides that people can take. But over the last few years, spring, summer and fall have been really healthy seasons for us,” said Pocahontas County CVB Executive Director Chelsea Faulknier. This increase in spring, summer and fall tourism has been particularly facilitated by the CVB's efforts to increase the quality of its biking trails. Snowshoe's Bike Park brings in thousands of guests annually to events like the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. Shavers Lake at Snowshoe is also a prime location for swimming and paddleboarding, while the rest of the resort is a destination for horseback and side-by-side tours, as well as the 4848 Music Festival. Other summertime attractions in Pocahontas County include the Cass Scenic Railroad, the Green Bank Observatory, the Greenbrier River and the Allegheny Trail. As President and CEO of Visit Cincy (formerly known as the Cincinnati USA Convention & Visitors Bureau), Julie Calvert leads the region's destination marketing and management organization. Her strategic vision and collaborative approach help maximize the size and impact of Cincinnati's visitor economy and expand the region's travel, tourism, and convention industries. Prior to her appointment as CEO, Calvert served as Executive Director of Source Cincinnati (Cincinnati Experience), where she led the charge to connect the region with national media and elevate the “Cincinnati Story” into the global spotlight. In that role, she created a coalition of like-minded, visionary funders. She built and engaged a board of directors and tapped our best regional resources and outside experts to establish Source as the region's only organization focused solely on global reputation management. Calvert has spent her career developing and executing strategies that drive awareness, build reputation, mobilize resources, and spark economic vitality in the region. She started as a media reporter and editor, worked as a senior advisor at one of Cincinnati's top communications firms and served as Vice President of Communications and Strategic Development for the CVB from 2001-2016. While there, she was the driving force behind the CVB's national marketing, communications and reputation-building strategies and was instrumental in the Bureau's record-setting results in attracting and hosting some of the world's most high-profile conventions. With a profound appreciation of our region's rich diversity, Calvert has a track record of finding ways to celebrate the varied voices, backgrounds and viewpoints that make up our Cincinnati tapestry. She helped build the CVB's Supplier Diversity Program and multicultural marketing channel. And she made diversity a key part of Source Cincinnati's strategic vision, from the people it engages to the stories it tells about the region. In 2019, she was honored with the APEX award from Black Meetings & Tourism. In 2015, Calvert spearheaded civic communications efforts for the 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game hosted in Cincinnati, raising the city's national profile during one of the signature events in all professional sports. In 2019, Calvert was included in the Cincinnati 300, a compilation of the city's top 300 business leaders, along with a spot in the Power 100, a list of the 100 most influential business, political and community leaders in the Cincinnati region. In 2020, amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, Calvert was tapped to chair the Ohio Governor's Statewide Task Force on Travel and Tourism to craft safe reopening strategies and protocols for the industry. She serves on board of Destinations International, the Hamilton County Commission on Women and Girls, the Board of the Cincinnati Music Festival, a former Cabinet Member for the ArtsWave Annual Community Campaign and has volunteered in leadership roles with several other regional non-profit organizations. Calvert earned a bachelor's degree from Miami University and resides in Anderson Township with her husband Chris and two sons.

Did someone say NBA All Star Game? Well, Justin did and he's laser focused on making that happen. In a new tradition enjoyed pretty much exclusively by the hosts, Justin and Emily talk national day-of holidays (vegan corndogs, anyone?), throw shade at Ohio (technically the moon is throwing the shade), swipe left on MasterCard and Visa temporary swipe fee reduction, and set an ominous tone for the preparation on what's to come for Michigan's tip credit. If they qualify, the team will play in Paris during the summer games that are scheduled to run from July 26 to August 11, 2024.   Tickets for the Charleston event may be purchased online on Ticketmaster or at the Charleston Coliseum box office. Read more: https://wvliving.com/champions-in-charleston/   #2 – From WV NEWS –  With only a few weeks left of summer, Marion County officials are encouraging people to step outside and see all the county has to offer while the weather is still nice and warm. “There is still lots of summer left in summer,” said Marion County Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Leisha Elliott. “There are concerts at Palatine Park. We've got Traditional Music Day coming up at Pricketts Fort, as well as other activities there. “We have another Hometown Market coming up in September. There are lots of activities that the family can get out and enjoy as far as entertainment, as well as the rail-trails, disc golf and hiking at Valley Falls State Park.” The CVB combined three popular outdoor activities this summer with a kayaking and rail/trail-based geocaching trail. The 32-cache “Fairmont Land or Aquatic Trail” (F.L.O.A.T.) starts in downtown Fairmont, where geocachers can either kayak nearly eight miles along the river to find 23 caches or get on the rail-trail to find eight additional caches. Both trails end at Pricketts Fort State Park, where an additional “bonus” cache is available to find. Looking for additional fun-filled activities? Her next flick is set to be Netflix's “Family Switch,” which involves body switching, so it's only natural that there are a few nods to “13 Going on 30.” “We overtly mention ‘13 Going on 30',” director McG said. “There's a meta sort of runner in the movie because I like showing the audience that kind of respect. We get it, we get it.” The movie will see Garner finding herself in the body of her teenage daughter, played by “Wednesday” star Emma Myers. The film also stars Ed Helms from “The Office” and everyone's favorite, Rita Moreno. Garner's character isn't the only person switching bodies, everyone in the family gets in on the action, including the dog. Garner was born in Houston, Texas, but moved to Charleston, West Virginia at age three. She is a graduate of George Washington High School. The CVB just received a federal earmark that will put that vision much closer to reality. The CVB has received $5 million in federal funds for its proposed welcome center on that property, one of two Wheeling initiatives that received seven-figure funding boosts in a Senate Appropriations Committee mark-up on a trio of funding bills. On top of the CVB's $5 million, the Community Impact Network Inc. received $1 million to help build a child care center. “I don't think we ever really over-promised about what this project would be,” said Wheeling CVB Executive Director Frank O'Brien. “But as we get this funding stack in play, now we can not over-promise, we can show what we can deliver. The earmark will make the project much more attractive as the CVB applies for other grants and funding. With $5 million in hand, other funding avenues should open up, he added. According to a survey by Family Destinations Guide, the Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant is the most anticipated event in West Virginia and the 55th most anticipated nationwide. The festival celebrates West Virginia's most famous cryptid, Mothman, and takes place every September. Last year, it brought thousands of visitors to Point Pleasant. This year, the event is scheduled for Sept. 16-17. The guide ranked the West Virginia State Fair as the 82nd most-anticipated event of this summer. Before her path would take her along the country roads of West Virginia, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, earning a degree in public relations, marketing and communications. Pack's office now overlooks the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. She bounces among helping with the resort's Mountain Serenity Spa, collaborating with the assistant lodge manager, or making sure rooms are great for their guests. Pack credits Governor Jim Justice for the difference his focus on tourism has made in the state parks. “He's made it a thing that people want to go to. Break the Ice Media team members Rhonda Cardenas and Brittany Lynn attended the Georgia CVB annual conference and discovered a wealth of inspirational stories and ideas that the state has to offer. With a positive momentum coming off of a strong 2022, there is a lot of optimism for a bright future in Georgia tourism. The state's beautiful outdoors continues to attract visitors, with state parks seeing large numbers of visitors and new apps featuring outdoor experiences like canoe and kayak trails. The conference attendees described the event as exciting, innovative, collaborative, and like a family, making it clear that Georgia's tourism industry is evolving and staying relevant in a changing world. In this episode, you'll hear from seven Georgia tourism leaders: Joe Marinelli – President, Visit Savannah Kat Hoyt – Visitor Center President, Discover Darien Sam McDuffie – Director of Tourism for Discover Dahlonega Sandy White – President & CEO Alliance for Dade, Chamber of Commerce & Welcome Center Stephanie Stuckey – CEO of Stuckey's Corporation Steven Schumacher – President, Cartersville Bartow CVB Tyler Bryant – President & CEO, Visit Hawkinsville Collaboration and Learning The Annual Conference organized by GACVB offers an excellent chance for professionals in the tourism industry to upgrade their knowledge of destination marketing and management. At this conference, industry suppliers, travel and hospitality affiliates, and tourism professionals come together to discuss successes and explore solutions related to the travel and tourism industry. It is a fun and informative event that offers ample opportunities for collaboration and learning with like-minded professionals across the state. Joe Marinelli – President, Visit Savannah Joe shares one of the many successful partnerships that his organization has fostered in Savannah. He explains how they work closely with the leadership of the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport and formed an Air Service Task Force made up of representatives from the airport, Visit Savannah, and Hilton Head to attract new air service to the region. By working together, they have brought in new airlines and expanded the number of destinations the airport serves. Kat Hoyt – Visitor Center President, Discover Darien Kat shares why it's about more than just visiting attractions, but getting outside and enjoying Georgia's beautiful natural spaces. Whether it's hiking through the mountains or paddling down a river, visitors are increasingly interested in connecting with nature and exploring the outdoors. Kat also describes the potential she sees in the use of technology to enhance the visitor experience. For example, the riverkeepers are developing apps that offer information about canoe and kayak trails in the state. This kind of technology can help visitors plan their trips more effectively and make the most of the available destinations. Sam McDuffie – Director of Tourism for Discover Dahlonega Sam shares his successful collaboration and partnership experience in using Over-the-Top (OTT) Television for their destination's tourism promotions. He emphasizes the importance of adapting to new technologies to cater to the ever-changing preferences of their target audience. With more people now using streaming devices for their TV viewing, his DMO has been trying to reach its target market by promoting its commercials and brand in streaming services through OTT TV. Sandy White – President & CEO Alliance for Dade, Chamber of Commerce & Welcome Center Sandy shares her excitement for tourism in Georgia in 2023 and notes that the trend of outdoor activities continues to gain momentum, with state parks seeing large numbers of visitors. She believes people are rediscovering the joys of road trips and staying close to home due to lingering concerns about air travel. As a result, small communities and outdoor destinations in Georgia are poised to benefit greatly. She also observes that the market is shifting towards more family-oriented weekend trips that involve outdoor activities. Stephanie Stuckey – CEO of Stuckey's Corporation Stephanie believes their brand is all about the freedom and independence of exploring America, which is at the core of tourism. Stuckey is excited to see a revival of the road trip in the country, as people are enjoying the joy of getting in their cars and exploring. In terms of changes in the market, Stuckey has noticed an increasing interest in small-town America. The sense of belonging and connection to a place is becoming more important to travelers, which makes Stephanie optimistic about the future of tourism in America. Steven Schumacher – President, Cartersville Bartow CVB According to Steven Schumacher, one trend that's new to the market and booming right now is the popularity of platforms like Airbnb for renting homes and cabins. In the past, hotels were always the main focus for CVBs to earn occupancy taxes. However, in recent years, with Airbnb's contributions to CVB funding, it has expanded their reach to those who may not want a traditional hotel stay. By partnering with both hotels and home-sharing platforms, CVBs can attract a broader range of travelers. Steven believes this trend enhances their ability to appeal to people who are interested in experiencing destinations in a more home-like setting rather than a traditional hotel. Tyler Bryant – President & CEO, Visit Hawkinsville According to Tyler, the word that best describes the GACVB annual conference is “collaboration.” This conference is all about sharing and learning new ideas from each other and working together towards success. The attendees collaborate with one another to grow and prosper in the industry. He shares why the conference offers a great opportunity for professionals to network, exchange knowledge, and find ways to work together toward a common goal. Forward Momentum for Georgia Destinations Our attendance at the Georgia CVBS conference has revealed some exciting insights into the state's tourism industry. Georgia is experiencing positive momentum after a successful 2022 with a promising outlook for 2023. Visitors are drawn to the state's natural beauty, with outdoor experiences remaining a top priority for many. Furthermore, the revival of road trips and interest in small-town America is playing into Georgia's strengths, making it a compelling destination for visitors. The state's tourism industry is continuously evolving to remain relevant in a changing world, and we're excited to see what the future holds for Georgia. CVB Executive Director Debrina Williams said 40% of the organization's working budget is based off the numbers presented in the report. “You can take a look at those numbers and know that tourism is booming in Logan County,” Williams said during Monday's meeting of the Logan County Commission. According to the CVB's annual report, the organization had $243,367.15 in total assets in 2022, compared to $236,761.23 in 2021.  Commission President Diana Barnette, who also sits on the CVB Board, noted that the 2022 figure is a representation of how much hotel/motel tax the county is raking in, largely due to out-of-state riders on the Hatfield McCoy Trails.   Read more: https://www.loganbanner.com/news/hatfield-mccoy-cvb-reports-higher-financials-for-2022/article_99575ef0-f81b-54a1-89b2-61261b73be38.html   #2 – From WV STATE PARKS –  Celebrate spring's return with a getaway at West Virginia state parks and forests! You understand the exhilaration of cruising the open road and the challenge of controlling a motorcycle. But motorcycling also can be dangerous.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges drivers and motorcyclists to share the road and be alert, and reminds motorcyclists to make themselves visible, to use DOT-compliant motorcycle helmets, and to always ride sober. Safe riding practices and cooperation from all road users will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our nation's highways. But it's especially important for drivers to understand the safety challenges faced by motorcyclists such as size and visibility, and motorcycle riding practices like downshifting and weaving to know how to anticipate and respond to them. By raising motorists' awareness, both drivers and riders will be safer sharing the road. Learn more: https://www.nhtsa.gov/road-safety/motorcycles Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. On today's episode, we're featuring our recent panel at DESTICON, a virtual conference that brought together tourism and hospitality professionals from the DMO (Destination marketing organization) space. In our session, we discussed how professional managers can work with their DMOs and CVBs to promote responsible tourism. (DMO = designated marketing organization and CVB = convention visitor's bureau. These organizations are typically funded by local and state tourism dollars, and exist to promote tourism to the destination.) There's plenty of confusion as to what the difference is between our product and what Airbnb is as a company. Lauren Madewell, David Krauss, and John Flanagan represent different sides of our industry – and collectively, we attack the biggest questions and misconceptions.Don't miss this episode of Alex & Annie: The Real Women of Vacation Rentals – it's an important one!“REAL” TALKLauren Madewell: The lack of ways to verify guests on Airbnb is concerning"Frankly, every bit of it is concerning. So you're getting their name and you're getting their cell phone number. Thank God you're getting their cell phone but you're getting a masked email. You're not getting their address. You have no way to verify their identity. You are trusting that this listing company, this tech company, Airbnb, has fully verified their identity and said, it's cool. It's cool. Everything's good."David Krauss: Create a voice for vacation rental on the boards                    "I think that's fundamentally the area of opportunity is to be proactive, not let this conversation kind of happen without engagement, but in terms of the CVBs and the boards and the DMOs, generally speaking, I think that the more that accommodation option is valued and seen as a valuable contributor and a complimentary activity, I think that's where the conversations are productive."John Flanagan: Regulations are actually good, restrictive bans are not"One thing that I think that I would impress upon anyone listening is that regulations are not a bad thing. We actually want regulations from both the supplier side and the operator side in our industry. The threat to what we're trying to do for travel and short-term rentals is restrictive bans and restrictions on short-term rentals. The reasons that those things come into fruition and happen is because of a lack of education on what a real professional operator does and a lack of regulation is standardization."This episode is brought to you by our Premiere Brand Sponsor, Casago, along with Co-Sponsors, Guest Ranger and Good Neighbor Tech.Special thanks to Rev & Research, Presenting Sponsor of Alex & Annie's List Connect with our guests below:David Krauss | Lauren Madewell | John FlanaganConnect with Alex and Annie and get more real vacation rental goodness:Alex Husner | Annie HolcombeAlexAndAnniePodcast.comIf you enjoyed this episode of ALEX & ANNIE: T

Karen Kuhl is the Executive Director at Cayuga County Convention and Visitors Bureau. She is a tourism and management professional with hospitality and F&B experience and has 15 years of experience as a tourism destination manager. As the former Director of Tourism and Hospitality Operations for Selva Negro Ecolodge and as Owner of Tastefully Nicaragua, she focused on sustainable tourism in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Her responsibilities included: marketing, sustainability certification process, human resources, long-term planning, and itinerary management. Karen's experience in the public and private sectors makes her an excellent advocate for the Cayuga County CVB's role in marketing and product development in the tourism industry. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Karen Kuhl, Executive Director for the Cayuga County CVB. Karen shares the programs her destination is currently working on and how their offerings are evolving as they dive deeper into how the internationally known abolitionist Harriet Tubman lived and worked in the region. Karen's team is also making a significant impact in DEI in the rural community and championing and supporting economic development as much as possible. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Where in the world Karen has worked, and what brought her back to the US An overview of Cayuga County, where it sits, and what it offers The importance of Harriet Tubman to Cayuga County and Auburn and how the CVB is using the significance of this historical figure to stand out from the crowd Why it's critical to build a solid foundation of DEI Their Harriet Tubman initiatives and how they are evolving How Cayuga County is promoting and elevating Black-owned businesses in their community The challenges and obstacles Karen has worked through and creative solutions that have helped her team navigate them An Important Legacy Karen describes how her destination, the Cayuga County CVB, draws visitors in through their connection to the internationally famous American Abolitionist, Harriet Tubman, and how they use that link to elevate and support economic development in the region. We discuss how Karen and her team live Harriet Tubman's legacy in Auburn by ensuring that the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusivity were built into the DNA of their organization. An Evolving Story The visitor experience in Auburn is a thriving story that continues evolving as the CVB finds out more and more about the businesses that were in town while Harriet Tubman would have engaged with them. Karen has also made a concerted effort to identify the broader individual Harriet Tubman was and uncover the human connection that so beautifully reveals all the facets of her character from the conductor of the Underground Railroad to a military leader, spy, nurse, and forger. We discuss why it's important as a destination marketer to appreciate all facets of why visitors might want to connect with a historical character and how CVBs can form partnerships that help them dig through the data to paint a fuller picture. Authenticity and Purpose Karen shares how her organization works with local businesses and community leaders to share their message, including putting together a grant to support the promotion of events around the Harriet Tubman bicentennial year in 2022. We also dive into why the tourists of today and tomorrow are traveling with a focus. And the importance of building a solid and authentic foundation as a destination and living it through your decisions.
