HELLO! Gosh, it's been a while, and I'm sorry about that. But, welcome back from Heard It's unexpected (but necessary) break. In this episode we cover quite a bit from the hell of next steps to my *anxiety* to two lukewarm light-hearted takes and just doing something though you know it's not always going to be 100%. You'll hear it in the episode, but I'm sorry for the long wait, grateful for those of you who stayed on me to pull myself together, and ecstatic to be back. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/heardit/message
‘It's not the people that quit and leave your organization that you have to worry about, it is the people that quit and stay.' Dr. Hope Zoeller My guests today are Dr. Hope Zoeller and Dr. Joe DeSensei. Dr. Hope is the founder and president of Hope LLC. Hope stands for Helping Other People Excel, and it is a firm that specializes in facilitating leaders' success at every level of an organization. For 14 years of her professional career. Dr. Zeller worked at UPS in a variety of roles including customer service training and development and employee relations. For16 years she has been consulting with organizations on leadership development. Dr. Joe DeSensi is the president of Educational Directions LLC, an educational consulting firm helping schools around the southeast for over 20 years. He developed custom and enterprise software to help districts track data and target students' needs. Joe holds patents in school data management software and database integration. Hope and Joe have co-authored two books, Hope for Leaders unabridged, Volume One and Hope for Leaders in the 2020s: New Issues to Face, New Problems to Solve, New Hope for the Future, Volume Two. Leaders question how they can be able to lead post-pandemic, which is now normal. Organizations have to get on board with leading differently than they've ever led before. Post-pandemic, people no longer have the tolerance to work for people that they don't feel genuinely care about them. Time and time again, studies have shown that the number one reason why people leave organizations is a bad leader. People want to know that the person that they work for cares. We have so many things that we do, just because we've always done them this way, but people have to actively go back and recapture those inefficient processes today. It is much more difficult for people to do things that they have just been conditioned to do. The workforce now has really rethought their priorities, and so organizations are going to have to take a serious look and have a serious conversation. It's not the people that quit and leave your organization that you have to worry about, it is the people that quit and stay. There are a lot of people that quit and stay and remain working for bad leaders. In a world where we have scarce resources you've got to treat your people to where you're always getting an engagement level out of them, not just a compliance level. Not everything before the pandemic was bad, nor is everything through the virtual world is good. It's really based on your circumstance, and not just your industry, but the talent that you have in your company. We have stopped looking at how many hours people work, and have started looking at the amount of work you can handle and if you're meeting your deadlines or not because that's ultimately the metric of success. There is a real opportunity for collaborative conversations. If you're a leader leading by yourself, you're not a true leader. Working backward from the way people think is really important in terms of how to tactically use your resources, and retain and motivate your best people. The four components to be able to lead with love are having a listening ear, an objective mind, and being curious rather than critical of what is being shared. Having an empathetic heart is also key. Leaders need to focus on their culture and climate since it is one of the few things that is going to retain the best people for businesses. Wall Street is starting to worry about Washington. Will the debt ceiling debate and tax hikes be what stops this rally? Plus, SPACs have had a spectacular meltdown since being all the rage earlier this year. And though it was a big year for IPOs, it wasn't a great one, especially for some of the biggest names. And the government reportedly trying to fight back against hackers by hitting them where it hurts: their crypto wallets.
Lawmakers are lining up to decide what Medicare will pay for after the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) is over – and they are looking confident that they have the votes to include it in a must-pass piece of legislation this year.Congress also seems to be on board with a plan to allow millions of Medicare patients to continue to video-chat with their physicians once the PHE is over. The Medicare advisory committee, MedPAC, has recommended a cautious approach, however, that would temporarily cover some telehealth services for all beneficiaries, but revert to lower reimbursement rates post-crisis for virtual appointments compared to in-person. There's also concern that a rapid expansion could prompt more fraudulent billings: the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) estimates that $4.5 billion in telehealth-related fraud was lost last year, which is why Part B evaluation and management (E&M) services provided during the PHE is on the current OIG 2021 Work Plan.Nationally recognized physician auditor, educator, and coder Terry Fletcher will report on this developing story during the next live edition of Talk Ten Tuesdays. The live broadcast will also feature these other segments:Coding Report: Laurie Johnson, senior healthcare consultant with Revenue Cycle Solutions, LLC, will have the Talk Ten Tuesdays Coding Report, along with the broadcast's weekly Listeners Survey.RegWatch: Stanley Nachimson, former Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) career professional-turned-well-known healthcare IT authority, will report on the latest regulatory news coming out of Washington.News Desk: Timothy Powell, compliance expert and ICD10monitor national correspondent, will anchor the Talk Ten Tuesdays News Desk.TalkBack: Erica Remer, MD, founder and president of Erica Remer, MD, Inc., and Talk Ten Tuesdays co-host, will report on a subject that has caught her attention during her popular segment.

Recent years have seen expanded interest in new or less common forms of taxation—things like wealth taxes, digital advertising taxes, excess compensation taxes, and financial transaction taxes.States have little or no experience with these taxes, leaving basic questions about the proper structure of such taxes unresolved and creating significant uncertainty around fundamental issues such as their revenue potential, impact on tax competitiveness, and even, in some cases, constitutionality. In this session, we will dive into several of these notable additions to the tax debate, outlining the arguments made for and against each tax, exploring some of the design and implementation challenges policymakers have encountered or are likely to encounter, and surveying the legal hurdles such tax proposals would have to clear.Areas of Focus:Wealth taxes and the mark-to-market taxation of capital gains incomeFinancial transaction and stock transfer taxesDigital advertising and data taxes, contrasted with sales taxation of digital goods and servicesExcess compensation taxes, business head taxes, and other new developments in state taxationLearn more at: https://taxfoundation.org/boot-camp

Hello there! After last week's episode with Jericho Brown in which we hashed it out over rhyme and why we write, Jericho brought us Lucille Clifton's "The Lost Baby Poem" to nerd out over. Trump Fires Attorney General Jeff Sessions Attorney General Jeff Sessions Wednesday, following a yearlong public shaming campaign that has raised questions about whether the president improperly interfered with the Justice Department’s inquiry into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Trump, who requested Sessions' resignation, named the attorney general's chief of staff Matthew Whitaker to serve as interim attorney general. Whitaker was Sessions' chief of staff and had been considered for a variety of jobs in the Trump administration, including the No. 2 post at Justice or as White House counsel. And now all hell is breaking loose with Democrats threatening new investigations and trying to get Whitaker to recuse himself concerning the Mueller Investigation. However, their efforts should prove unsuccessful according to John, it's clearly within the President's power to do so.

President Trump has started his way around in the IT industry with an attempt to empower more companies and jobs through the new H1B Bill, and this can both be a great move or a setback for IT companies. I won’t say Ailish Hopper‘s collection Dark~Sky Society (New Issues Press, 2014) is “about” anything because that would do it a disservice. These poems are human. They move like legs on a street, like a mind at work that calls you to ruminate with it. Because we can’t understand everything, we have to be comfortable in that space of being unsure. Hopper calls it “Art out of Ignorance” and I agree, but wonder if it is not also “Art out of a Refusal to Misunderstand.” It is not easy to stay in an uncomfortable space until you hit on a truth. It is also difficult to accept silence as a part of communication but this poet does and what she has discovered, she shares with us in this collection. “Dark Sky Society” does not see its own bravery. It does not draw attention to its confrontation of everything “place” can mean. And it does not apologize. The poems implicate themselves, and in turn implicate anyone who has ever dared to wonder, “How and why does our world work in this way?” I strongly encourage our listeners to pick up a copy of this collection to witness the ways in which Hopper reminds us that the song, the visuals, and the voice of the poem can engage the senses in a brilliance of stimuli and, in turn, the mind.
