In the Torah portion of Va'Yigash, we see a powerful moment of reconciliation and personal transformation as Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers, who had once betrayed him. This moment of intense emotional release and healing resonates with themes found in The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, where characters grapple with past betrayals and seek redemption. Just as Joseph's brothers must confront their past actions and seek forgiveness, the protagonist of The Kite Runner, Amir, spends much of his life running from his guilt over betraying his friend Hassan. In both stories, the act of facing painful truths is the first step toward healing and reconciliation. Joseph, like Amir, is forced to decide between vengeance and forgiveness, and in choosing to forgive his brothers, he ultimately allows for personal and communal redemption. In Va'Yigash, the family is reunited not just physically, but emotionally, showing that true healing requires confronting past wounds and making a conscious choice to rebuild relationships. Just as in The Kite Runner, the journey toward forgiveness can be long and difficult, but it offers the promise of renewal and wholeness.

The antisemites of this world are right – the Jews do run the world – but not in the way they think... In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed “Bohemian Rhapsody”. His music publishing company, Druidcrest Music published the music for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and as a record producer, he co-produced the quadruple-platinum debut album by American band “Foreigner” (1976). American Top ten singles from this album included, “Feels Like The First Time”, “Cold as Ice” and “Long, Long Way from Home”. Other production work included “The Enid – In the Region of the Summer Stars”, “The Curves”, and “Nutz” as well as singles based on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy with Douglas Adams and Richard O'Brien. Other artists who used SARM included: ABC, Alison Moyet, Art of Noise, Brian May, The Buggles, The Clash, Dina Carroll, Dollar, Flintlock, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, It Bites, Malcolm McLaren, Nik Kershaw, Propaganda, Rush, Rik Mayall, Stephen Duffy, and Yes. In 1987, he settled in Jerusalem to immerse himself in the study of Torah. His two Torah books The Color of Heaven, on the weekly Torah portion, and Seasons of the Moon met with great critical acclaim. Seasons of the Moon, a unique fine-art black-and-white photography book combining poetry and Torah essays, has now sold out and is much sought as a collector's item fetching up to $250 for a mint copy. He is much in demand as an inspirational speaker both in Israel, Great Britain and the United States. He was Plenary Keynote Speaker at the Agudas Yisrael Convention, and Keynote Speaker at Project Inspire in 2018. Rabbi Sinclair lectures in Talmud and Jewish Philosophy at Ohr Somayach/Tannenbaum College of Judaic studies in Jerusalem and is a senior staff writer of the Torah internet publications Ohrnet and Torah Weekly. A thought for the week of Parshat Va'eira 5784/2024.
Gratitude is one of the most vital - if not the most vital - character trait a person could have. It's the key to happiness and to faith. So much so, that the Almighty personally taught Moses how very profound gratitude is. We see this lesson in this week's Torah portion, Va'era.
Why are there ten plagues instead of one big one? Why did Pharoah harden his heart? Are there 4 or 5 phrases of redemption? All this and more on this week's Ponderings on the Parsha!
The phrase “Turn it up to eleven!” still brings a nostalgic smile to my lips. The concept of being over the top unwittingly recognizes that there is a top. In reality this world is bounded by the number Ten. In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed “Bohemian Rhapsody”. In this conversation with Rabbanit Dr. Adina Sternberg we explore the prohibitions of adding to and subtracting from the Torah and how these commandments have far-reaching impact on our lives as Jews today. Our series on Devarim is titled, Dor Hemshech: Messages for a lifetime. Each episode explores Moshe's educational message for the Jewish people as they prepare to enter the land of Israel. Our week's guests are women who themselves have learned at Matan and are now passing these educational messages to next generation of Torah students.

Parshat Va'eira: Passover, Pharoah, and The Name of God - English only. An Atheist? Don't Believe Him! Aharon Barak, the ideological head of Israel's left, was photographed wearing tefillin. Can an Israeli really be an atheist? (Parshat Va'era)
At the beginning of Parshat Va'era, Moshe complains to God that He has set him up for failure. "Even the Jewish people won't listen to me, how can you expect Pharaoh to listen to me?" Rashi suggests that this is one of 10 instances of "kal v'chomer" (a fortiori) logic being used in the Torah. Rabbi Dunner shares a powerful question on Rashi's statement, and offers various solutions.

Are we ready to admit to our mistakes? We all make them. Stubborn refusal to acknowledge when we are wrong is one of life's gravest errors. Learning to correct that mistake is one of life's most important lessons. Rabbi Dunner explores this topic via historical anecdotes and a lesson in Parshat Va'era.

What is the common denominator between King Louis XV of France and King Chizkiyahu of the First Temple in Jerusalem? And how exactly do they differ? Rabbi Dunner explains that the answer can be found in the Haftora for Parshat Va'etchanan, which begins with God's incredible declaration: "Nachamu Nachamu Ami".
