The chapter begins with the appearance of a "strong angel" or "mighty angel," whom Zumpano ultimately identifies as Jesus Christ in the form of the Holy Spirit (the "angel of the Lord") due to the angel's association with a cloud (the Shekinah glory) and his physical description matching that of Jesus in Revelation 1. This angel stands with one foot on the sea and one on the land, proclaiming that there will be "delay no longer" in the revelation of the "mystery of God" (Verse 7) when the Seventh Trumpet sounds. This mystery, subject to scholarly debate, is believed by Zumpano to be the long-unanswered question of why God permitted sin and Satan's entry into the world. The second major event is John's instruction to take an "open little book" from the angel's hand and "eat it," which signifies receiving prophetic knowledge. John experiences sweetness in his mouth (the revelation of the Messiah's coming and Jewish redemption) but bitterness in his stomach (the coming great suffering of the Jews during the Tribulation). The book also instructs John to prophesy again, indicating its relevance to his personal ministry. Following this, Revelation 11introduces the next event: the command to measure the rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem, excluding the outer court which is still under Gentile (Muslim) control (Dome of the Rock) on Mount Mariah. This reconstruction is the final major prophecy needing fulfillment before Christ's return, as it sets the stage for the Antichrist's desecration ("abomination of desolation"). This entire sequence of events signifies that human history is coming to an end, to be replaced by God's history (theocracy). Chapter 11 then introduces the Two Witnesses—Jesus's "my witnesses"—who will prophesy in sackcloth for 1,260 days before being killed by the Beast and resurrected.

The Torah reading this week begins the story of Yosef, or Joseph, favored son of Yaakov. Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for a two-part look at parsha “Vayeshev,” Genesis chapters 37 through 40, where the story begins, and builds on dreams. The Erev Shabbat reading: https://hebrewnationonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/SSM-12-12-25-Vayeshev-teaching-podcast-xx.mp3 While this parsha contains a number of ‘nuggets’, or memorable elements, images, and component lessons, the midrash suggests that even the structure of the story is all about a ‘long-term’ plan of YHVH. This reading itself is only just the beginning of a series of what might be called “cliff-hangers,” where we see, as do Yosef and his brothers, that structure being put in place for what is to come. In any number of ways… Vayeshev: ‘Two Dreams, Two Witnesses – Who can BUT Prophesy’ https://hebrewnationonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/WT-CooH-12-13-25-Vayeshev-Two-Dreams-Two-witnesses-Who-can-BUT-prophesy-podcast-xxx.mp3 The combined two-part reading and Sabbath midrash:
Revelation 11 reveals God's unwavering faithfulness through His witnesses even in the midst of global apostasy and tribulation, emphasizing that divine purpose prevails despite human rebellion. The chapter centers on a future temple in Jerusalem—symbolizing a temporary return to Old Testament worship—while affirming that Christ's once-for-all sacrifice renders such rituals obsolete, highlighting the spiritual reality of believers as God's living temple in the present age. Two prophetic witnesses, empowered by the Holy Spirit and symbolized as olive trees and candlesticks, emerge during the final three-and-a-half years of the tribulation, preaching repentance and the supremacy of Christ, enduring persecution and martyrdom before being resurrected and raptured in a dramatic display of divine vindication. Their resurrection and ascension instill terror in their enemies and confirm God's ultimate triumph over evil, underscoring the eternal truth that no believer's death is outside God's sovereign plan. The passage ultimately exalts Christ's coming, affirms the reality of divine judgment and resurrection, and calls the faithful to steadfast hope amid tribulation.
This powerful exploration of Revelation 11 takes us deep into the prophetic narrative of God's two witnesses during the tribulation period. We encounter a remarkable truth: God will never be without a witness, even in humanity's darkest hour. These two prophets, described as olive trees and lampstands, embody spiritual anointing and serve as bearers of divine truth when deception runs rampant. What strikes us most profoundly is the assurance that we are indestructible until God's purpose for our lives is complete. Like Paul, who endured beatings, imprisonment, and persecution yet declared 'I have finished the race,' we can face our own trials knowing our breath is held securely in God's hands. The passage reveals a sobering contrast between the Lamb of God who saves sinners and the beast of Satan who persecutes saints. Yet even amid judgment, we witness God's incredible mercy—when the two witnesses are resurrected after three and a half days, many give glory to God. This reminds us that divine grace extends even to the final moments, offering salvation to those who will turn their hearts. The question becomes deeply personal: have we accepted this gift of salvation while we still have breath? Are we living as His witnesses in our own generation, unafraid because we know whose hands hold our destiny?
Sunday Service (11/30/25) // Revelation 11:3-14 (ESV) // The Two Witnesses1 Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, 2 but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months. 3 And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.”4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. 5 And if anyone would harm them, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes. If anyone would harm them, this is how he is doomed to be killed. 6 They have the power to shut the sky, that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire. 7 And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit[a] will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, 8 and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically[b] is called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified. 9 For three and a half days some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb, 10 and those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and exchange presents, because these two prophets had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth. 11 But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here!” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them. 13 And at that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.14 The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is soon to come.Footnotesa. There is perhaps no more hotly debated passage in the Book of Revelation than chapter 11. It is a particularly complex passage filled with challenging allusions to various Old Testament texts such as Zechariah, Daniel, Exodus, 1 Kings, and Ezekiel. It is a passage filled with temple imagery and the symbolic use of numbers. The […]
Revelation 11 opens a fascinating window into the final years of human history, revealing God's unwavering commitment to reach hearts even in the darkest times. At the center of this passage is a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem, a structure that emerges during the tribulation period through a deceptive peace accord. When John is instructed to measure this temple, we discover something profound: God isn't concerned with architectural dimensions but with the spiritual condition of hearts. The measuring represents divine assessment—how will Israel respond when the Antichrist's true nature is revealed? This speaks directly to our own lives today. We are each temples of the Holy Spirit, and God measures us not by perfection or performance, but by the loyalty of our hearts. The passage reminds us that God's love for Israel—and for us—persists through deception and darkness. Even when we're deceived or have wandered, God works to unveil truth and call us back. The imagery of sackcloth-wearing witnesses mourning over a rebellious world challenges us to examine our own hearts: Do we grieve over the lostness around us? Are we willing to be faithful witnesses regardless of the cost? This chapter isn't just about future events; it's about the character of a God who refuses to leave anyone without a witness, who measures hearts with mercy, and who calls us to faithful obedience even when the world celebrates rebellion.

In Peter's last letter, he makes clear that he will soon facedeath, and Peter wants to leave his readers with a final reminder of what he has taught about the gospel of Jesus Christ: The return of Christ in glory. Peter is going to provide us with two witnesses to establish the truthfulness of Christ's return in glory—the witness of the apostles and the prophetic word.
This is the age of "The Two Witnesses." As creation moves to a wind-down moment: two distinct ministries will be restored by the two men who were taken into heaven alive: Moses and Elijah never tasted death. These Two Witnesses will return to wind up God's program for the ages. It will not be fun and games. It will be an epic shaking and recovery of all that God has purposed since the world began. Moses was used by God to destroy the gods of Egypt and bring the Law. Elijah decimated the worship of Idols and brought the people back to their Covenant with God.
