The world is meant to be moving away from oil and gas, yet we are consuming more of it than ever. Global oil demand is now running at more than 102 million barrels per day, above pre-pandemic levels, and expected to continue growing according to the International Energy Agency. At the same time, oil and gas still account for roughly 55% of global energy consumption, underscoring just how far the transition still has to run. That's not to say the shift isn't happening. Renewables now generate close to 30% of global electricity, and clean energy investment has surged past US$2 trillion annually, well ahead of fossil fuels. But here's the catch: existing oil fields decline at around 5–7% per year, meaning fresh supply is constantly needed just to stand still. Recent events have made that juxtaposition impossible to ignore - just ask anyone who has filled up their car at $2.50+ per litre in recent weeks. The conflict in the Middle East has provided a sharp reminder that, for all the progress, the global economy remains deeply reliant on hydrocarbons. Australia remains one of the world's largest LNG exporters and is home to globally competitive oil and gas producers across the market cap spectrum. In this episode, Acorn Capital's Rick Squire and Datt Capital's Emanuel Datt discuss the energy market and run the ruler over four ASX oil and gas stocks. This episode was recorded on Wednesday, 8th April 2026.

Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Ellison run companies that are increasingly taking on the characteristics of independent governments. Acting as states within a state, these tech oligarchs are building powerful blocks that resist democratic regulation, for example from the EU. Is the era of liberal capitalism coming to an end? The global economy no longer revolves around rule-based competition. Today, might makes right. For contemporary tech multinationals, this means obtaining a monopoly on a planet where resources are finite, argues the French economic historian Arnaud Orain. In doing so, the current rogue capitalism of companies like Meta and Oracle harks back to the state capitalism of the Dutch East India Company in the seventeenth century. What parallels can we draw from history, and is the economic world order indeed at a tipping point? In this edition of Techdenkers, we explore with Arnaud Orain how his long historical view helps us understand the power dynamics of today's technological landscape, along with philosopher and writer Maarten Doorman and economist and America-expert Heleen Mees.Programme editor: Rosalie DielesenModerator: Lennart BooijThe Techdenkers series is provided and broadcast by De Balie and is part of our partnership with Adyen.Zie het privacybeleid op https://art19.com/privacy en de privacyverklaring van Californië op https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I'm thrilled to share some exciting insights from our latest podcast episode, where I had the pleasure of interviewing Sam Gibson, the visionary founder and CEO of Hadron Energy. Sam's pioneering work in developing 10-megawatt micro reactors is set to revolutionize the energy landscape, particularly for data centers, industrial applications, and national security. Here's a sneak peek into our conversation:Key Takeaways from the Episode:Sam's Journey into Nuclear Energy:Inspired by his father's work and a childhood fascination with Iron Man 2, Sam's passion for mechanical engineering and clean energy led him to nuclear power.Despite being one of the youngest executives in the field, Sam's fresh perspective is driving innovation in an industry traditionally dominated by older generations. The Vision for Micro Reactors:Hadron Energy is bridging a significant market gap by developing scalable, factory-fabricated 10-megawatt light water micro reactors. These reactors are designed to be efficient, safe, and commercially viable, leveraging proven technology used in existing U.S. reactors.Overcoming Challenges:Sam's journey wasn't easy—starting solo, he traveled cross-country to pitch his concept, facing skepticism and regulatory hurdles.Persistence paid off, and now Hadron Energy is gaining traction with strong interest from data centers, industrial operators, and government entities.Technology and Market Differentiation:Hadron's micro reactors offer a modular, scalable solution, reducing risks and costs associated with traditional large nuclear plants. This approach is particularly attractive to data centers and industrial operators needing reliable, carbon-free baseload power.Demand Drivers:The growing energy needs of data centers, driven by AI infrastructure, and the push for decarbonization in various sectors are fueling demand for Hadron's reactors.National security considerations also underscore the strategic importance of reliable baseload power.Policy and National Security:Favorable policies, like the ADVANCE Act, aim to triple U.S. nuclear capacity by 2050, aligning government incentives with industry goals.Initiatives like Project Janus highlight the critical role of micro reactors in national security.Leadership and Company Culture:Sam's leadership style focuses on servant leadership, fostering a collaborative environment where the best ideas win.Hadron's culture prioritizes safety, technical excellence, and an engineering-first approach, essential for their deep tech focus.Advice for Founders and Investors:Sam advises aspiring founders to identify a unique value proposition and commit to navigating complex regulatory landscapes. For investors, understanding the technical and regulatory nuances of nuclear technology is crucial for long-term, predictable investments.Looking Ahead:Sam envisions Hadron Energy operating a manufacturing facility producing mass-manufactured micro reactors, with licenses for deployment in the U.S. and internationally. The company aims to significantly contribute to a larger nuclear industry, meeting the growing demand for clean, reliable energy. Why You Should ListenSend us a textConnect with Kip on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/kipknippel/Watch Bite-Sized Clips on YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/@capitalistculture/shorts

This week we explore the power behind the power - the hidden figures quietly pulling the strings in the rooms where world leaders make history (but don't call them puppeteers though… they don't love that). This week, I'm joined by Phoebe Saintalin Stocks, founder of Missing Perspectives and author of the brilliant new book The Right Hand. What makes this book so extraordinary is that Phoebe sat down with the real chiefs of staff to some of the most influential leaders on the planet - from Jacinda Ardern, Kamala Harris and John Howard to Nelson Mandela, Tony Blair and Julia Gillard. In our chat, Phoebe opens up about her own career journey and how she learned just how human our world leaders really are. Perfect content for our fellow political nerds… or if you peaked early as your Primary School Vice Captain.

What would it feel like To Run the World? The Soviet rulers spent the Cold War trying desperately to find out. In To Run The World: The Kremlin's Cold War Bid for Global Power, Sergey Radchenko provides an unprecedented deep dive into the psychology of the Kremlin's decision-making. He reveals how the Soviet struggle with the United States and China reflected its irreconcilable ambitions as a self-proclaimed superpower and the leader of global revolution. This tension drove Soviet policies from Stalin's postwar scramble for territory to Khrushchev's reckless overseas adventurism and nuclear brinksmanship, Brezhnev's jockeying for influence in the third world, and Gorbachev's failed attempts to reinvent Moscow's claims to greatness. Perennial insecurities, delusions of grandeur, and desire for recognition propelled Moscow on a headlong quest for global power, with dire consequences and painful legacies that continue to shape our world. Sergey Radchenko is the Wilson E. Schmidt Distinguished Professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He has written extensively on the Cold War, nuclear history, and on Russian and Chinese foreign and security policies. He has served as a Global Fellow and a Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Centre and as the Zi Jiang Distinguished Professor at East China Normal University (Shanghai). Professor Radchenko's books include To Run the World: the Kremlin's Cold War Bid for Global Power (Cambridge UP, forthcoming in 2024), Two Suns in the Heavens: the Sino-Soviet Struggle for Supremacy (Wilson Center Press & Stanford UP, 2009), and Unwanted Visionaries: the Soviet Failure in Asia (Oxford UP, 2014). Professor Radchenko is a native of Sakhalin Island, Russia, was educated in the US, Hong Kong, and the UK, where he received his PhD in 2005 (LSE). Trump's tariffs are certainly bold - but are they beneficial? Markets tank - then soar! Interest rates...UP? Should one person control the world's economy? And, should it be Trump? Is there any chance he's got this wrong?

Welcome to the Season 6 Premiere of Decorating the Set: From Hollywood to Your Home with Beth Kushnick! We kick off the new season with a fantastic interview with Production Designer and Beth collaborator, Michael Fitzgerald. We are so lucky for him to bring us his love of production design and his boundless passion and creativity. A must listen to episode to begin the new season! Interact with Beth, Caroline, Producer Mike, and all of the DTS listeners! GUEST BIO: MICHAEL FITZGERALD Production Designer Michael Fitzgerald is a California native, having begun as a teenager interning for Shakespeare Santa Cruz and regional theater companies, he continued his exploration of theater and set design at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. His subsequent move into the realm of feature films allowed him to nurture close collaborations with directors, a creative relationship that he values immensely. His recent forays in the documentary world have also enabled him to bring the directors' very personal visions to the screen. Michael is currently working on the documentary series People of the West, recounting and visualizing the rich and complex history of California's native peoples. Out of My Mind, is Michael's third feature film collaboration with director Amber Sealey, after the Ted Bundy prison drama No Man of God (2021) starring Elijah Wood. Amber and Michael met at Shakespeare Santa Cruz as teenagers! Out of My Mind (2024) is Disney's very first film featuring a nonverbal lead actor with cerebral palsy. The challenge for Michael was two-fold: to create realistic spaces at the character's home, school environments and other locations, and also to make every working set completely accessible, to accommodate the numerous actors in the cast with disabilities. Michael has always had a strong intuition for how to best bring a story to life, creating worlds that are visually authentic and in synch with the tone of each project. Elon Musk and a band of young DOGE engineers are taking control of key government infrastructure. The scale and speed with which they're hijacking control of the federal government is shocking, and even President Donald Trump appears not to know all that Musk is doing. Applebaum is a staff writer for The Atlantic, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, and author of the recently released Autocracy, Inc.: The Dictators Who Want to Run The World. Higgins is a reporter for the IT Brew and author of Owned: How Tech Billionaires on the Right Bought the Loudest Voices on the Left. This week's show brought to you by: Personal Coaching As your training kicks into full gear this spring, don't underestimate the difference a personal coach can make when it comes to getting the results you deserve. For newer runners, a personal coach is that expert who can answer every question you have (and even the ones you don't know to ask) so you're absolutely positive that each day you're maximizing your training. For experienced runners, you'll finally have someone who knows and understands your strengths and weaknesses in-depth to help you squeeze that last 10% out of your training. Personal coaching is more than just a training schedule. Working one-on-one with a personal coach from RunnersConnect means you have someone analyzing both your short-term progress, but also helping you plan for long-term progression. Plus, you get feedback and adjustments on all your runs and workouts so you know you're making optimal progress. But, what makes our coaches different? First, we specialize in working with runners between 45 and 65, not elite athletes. Plus, our custom platform allows us to dig into your training data to give you insights and advice you can't get anywhere else. To learn more and see some of the results runners like you were able to achieve, head to runnersconnect.net/personal. Plus, you can get a free custom gait analysis through the end of January. Again, that's https://runnersconnect.net/personal MAS Iron Outside of training deficiencies, low iron is one of the most common reasons for poor results during workouts and races. Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. The problem with eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with traditional iron supplements is that iron is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. In fact, only about 25% of dietary iron found in animal sources is absorbed while 17% or less of the iron from plant sources is absorbed. But MAS Iron has found a way to combat these absorption issues to ensure you can get the iron you need for health and performance. By combining the most efficiently absorbed form of elemental iron with clinically proven ingredients to aid in absorption, MAS Iron performs like no other iron product on the market. In fact, clinical research has shown the combination of ingredients in MAS Iron can quadruple absorption and increase bioavailability by 30%, all while reducing GI issues by 50%. Check out the research and the results for yourself at masedge.com/iron. Runnersconnect fans will automatically save 20% on any purchase.
To celebrate 2024, we're taking a look backwards, and diving into the standout thinkers who have taken to the Intelligence Squared stage in the past 12 months. You might still be on the hunt for that perfect gift for the avid reader in your life, or perhaps you're after some food for thought over the festive period. Either way, this 12 episode mini series will highlight the books that shaped 2024. We hope you'll join us in 2025 for more events that intrigue, fascinate and entertain. In the 20th century most autocrats were brutal dictators whose main goal was to control a domestic population. But in the 21st century autocracy has become much more sophisticated and ambitious in its scope. States like Russia have developed sophisticated cross-border networks of kleptocratic financial structures, innovative security services and professional propagandists. The members of these networks are connected not only within a given country, but among many countries. Propagandists from one country can promote and finance extremists and propaganda in another – pounding home the same messages about the weakness of democracy and the evil of the West. In September 2024 Anne Applebaum came to Intelligence Squared to provide a radical new framework for understanding autocracy in the 21st century. Applebaum argued that autocracies today are best viewed like an agglomeration of companies or what she calls Autocracy, Inc. Their relations are not based on values, but are rather transactional, which is why they operate so easily across ideological, geographical, and cultural lines. In truth, they are in full agreement about only one thing: The destruction of democratic challengers. Applebaum was in conversation with BBC broadcaster Jonny Dymond to discuss how to understand and thwart this new evolved form of autocracy. ... It started with The Exorcist and it ended with Pikachu - The Satanic Panic is a strange period of history that began in the 1970s off the back of McCarthyism and the Cold War and in many ways continues to this day. A time when people all over North America in particular became worried the USA, and maybe the world, was being overrun by satanists. They worried frantically that satanists were using media like music, movies, and even boardgames to control the minds of the population.
