The Experience Economy is a diverse and substantial part of Irish life and plays an important role in Ireland's international reputation as a place to live, work and visit. In this episode we will discuss the scale of Ireland's Experience Economy, Ibec's ambitions for its growth, and recommendations to Government for further support. We are joined by Sharon Higgins, Ibec Executive Director of Membership and Sectors, and Pat McCann, Non-Executive Director of Glenveagh Properties and Former Dalata Hotel Group CEO. Pat McCann started in 1969 with Ryan Hotel Group plc and later joined Jurys Hotel Group plc in 1989. He rose to the position of Chief Executive in 2000 and retired from Jurys Doyle in 2006. However, retirement did not slow Pat down, and he founded the Dalata Hotel Group in 2007, which went on to become the largest hotel group in Ireland. Besides his success in the hotel business, Pat has contributed significantly to various organisations. He served as President of Ibec from September 2019 to September 2020 and is a member of the Ibec Board. Despite retiring from Dalata at the end of 2021, Pat currently serves as Chair of the National Maternity Hospital and Glenveagh Properties plc and is involved with several private companies. Hey Guys! I’ve got a bit of a unique episode this week. I sat down with my buddy Pat McCann to chat about the Masters and to review the upcoming RBC Heritage this weekend. Pat shares my love of golf and is an avid sports gambler. I had a short lived sports betting career after going down big in my first week a few years back. So I thought it would be nice to get some commentary from him on the unfolding of the Masters and the upcoming tournament this weekend. I’m going to do Major tournament previews moving forward.

After over 50 years in business, Pat McCann has weathered many storms. Starting out in the hospitality trade during the Oil Crisis of the 1970s, McCann successfully steered businesses through the many crises and recessions in the decades that followed. Now, as CEO of Ireland's largest hotel operator, Dalata PLC, he is facing into his latest challenge with perspective and resilience, understanding that while the group will “face some short-term headwinds, it doesn't mean that we should get blown off track completely, because that's not what's going to happen”. In this episode of The EY Podcast: CEO Series, Richard Curran talks to one of Ireland's best-known hotel operators as he slowly reopens his doors to an unrecognisable and unpredictable tourism market. Forced to shut down the vast majority of his operations during Covid-19 with revenues reduced to zero, Pat McCann set out to develop a clear strategy for retaining senior staff while retraining others, seizing the opportunities that this crisis will present, and developing a post-Covid hotel experience for holiday-makers. In this interview, Pat reveals how he went about developing this strategy based on his vast experience in the sector and his unique approach to people-management. He also talks about:+Why he predicts a big bounce in domestic tourism, and what the new hotel experience will be like for visitors. +The moment he opened the envelope containing developer Sean Dunne's record €275m bid for Jurys Hotel, Ballsbridge. +The differences between leading a private company and a publicly listed one, his approach to delivering shareholder value, and his advice for achieving a successful IPO.+How and why he applies an ‘internal-first' approach to developing management.+His personal approach to work and leisure (they're one and the same); also, his love of Mafia movies, his business mantra, and the other business leaders that he most admires.

Pat McCann, founder of hotel group Dalata, says this crisis is worse than the many previous recessions and crises of his career all put together - but he says Dalata has the strength to survive, even if, as he believes, restrictions remain in place until late 2020. He talks to business editor Ciaran Hancock. From the Inside Business team, thanks to our listeners for their patience while we have been on hiatus for the past fortnight. Hosted on Acast. We are sad to announce the passing of two members of our Leftscape family. Alan Semok, Mary's husband, passed away on Sunday, October 27th. In this episode, Mary enumerates his many creative accomplishments and speaks from the raw place of recent loss. Known as "The Dummy Doctor," Alan Semok was a ventriloquist with a special expertise in repairing and restoring ventriloquist dummies. He was an accomplished actor and had many unique credits including performing as Larry of The Three Stooges and becoming the voice of Bela Lugosi. Tragically, Mary's beloved nephew, the funny and talented Pat McCann, also died one week before Alan. Thank you for listening, helping Mary through an extraordinarily difficult time, and honoring their lives. Considering the distressing nature of the recent events, All the News We Can Handle is on the lighter side. Stories include tracked eagles accruing outrageous roaming charges, Trump getting booed at the World Series, and a ridiculous "Florida Man" story. In a special Rewind segment, Robin and Wendy discuss Episode 60 featuring David Jamison and why Jewish people were not mentioned anywhere in the conversation on how we divide ourselves by race. The show begins in celebratory form, with mentions of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, Saxophone Day (November 6th), National Men Make Dinner Day (November 7th), National STEM/STEAM Day (November 8th), World Science Day for Peace and Development and the US Marine Corps Birthday (November 10th), and Veterans Day (November 11th). The birthday people of the week are former pro tennis player Ana Ivanovic, Emma Stone, Sally Field, Lorde, Marie Curie, Gordon Ramsay, Carl Sagan, Emma Gonzalez, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Peaches. We've had some fantastic guests on The Coaching Journey Podcast. Today, though, is what I consider to be the best episode we have done so far on the podcast. Today's episode features Pat McCann, professional player with the Richmond Kickers in the USL, and yet Pat's name isn't one you'll be familiar with. This is an inspirational story that any coach, player, or fan of the game NEEDS to listen to. We discuss Pat's journey from Long Island, NY, to trials with MLS clubs, to purchasing a one way ticket to Ireland on the hopes of acquiring a professional contract. Pat's story is what the pathway looks like for most players, and we are proud we are able to bring this necessary discussion to you.
