Ep. 172 - Sharon Kan: The CEO & Co-Founder of Pepperlane On the Hard Decision to Stop Her Start-up [Live in Boston]

Sharon Kan is the CEO & Co-Founder at Pepperlane, a start-up that helped mothers transform their ideas, skills, and passions into businesses that fit into their busy lives. They raised millions with her brilliant concept. Alas, like so many others, COVID had a massive negative impact on her business, and she had to make the difficult decision to shut it down earlier this year. In my conversations, I'm keenly aware of survivorship bias—that only talking to people who've won the lottery can give us a false impression about what it's like to play the lottery. Or as Mitch Hedberg said: “You know when you see an advertisement for a casino, and they have a picture of a guy winning money? That's false advertising, because that happens the least. That's like if you're advertising a hamburger, they could show a guy choking. “This is what happened once.”” Today we talk about life after a start-up, and how this unpleasant aspect of the journey led to Sharon finding a new voice and a new passion. Now she's mentored hundreds of women CEOs and business owners, and she's building a new life behind the scenes. If you've ever tried to build something ambitious, this episode is for you. ➡️ https://www.linkedin.com/in/sharon2016/ ➡️ Highlights: https://rosspalmer.com/sharon-kan ➡️ Follow me on Instagram: @therosspalmer ➡️ Subscribe on YouTube: @therosspalmer

In this episode MBO Partners speaks with Sharon about how she is shaking up the patriarchal system of work and supporting a 20-million strong market of talented moms that has the power to reshape the small business economy.Sharon talks about how denying our full identities at work—leaving the motherhood label at the door—adversely affected economic output even before the “She-cession” brought about by COVID-19 put many women out of work. She notes, however, how the current situation has also sparked great creativity among entrepreneurial mothers. She discusses how most professional gender gaps are motherhood gaps and the role that independent work plays in closing them. She also talks about the ways that organizations looking to educate and support new sectors of talent can work together to close entrepreneurial knowledge gaps and how a few pointed policies could aid working mothers and society as a whole.About This Episode's GuestSharon Kan is co-founder and CEO of Pepperlane, the organization helping mothers turn their skills and ideas into businesses that fit into their lives. Welcome to Episode 119 of The VentureFizz Podcast, the flagship podcast from the leading authority for jobs & careers in the tech industry. For this episode of our podcast, I interviewed Gail Goodman, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at Pepperlane. Gail is a legend in the Boston tech scene. As CEO of Constant Contact, she took the company from its earliest days to a successful IPO and later, an acquisition by Endurance International Group for over $1B. Constant Contact was a groundbreaking company that was going against the grain in terms of building a successful SaaS business while working with SMB's (Small-to-Medium) sized businesses. This was unheard of back then and it is truly an inspirational story that all entrepreneurs should listen to. Gail is now working with an amazing team to hopefully build another pillar tech company that is unlocking a massive market opportunity. Pepperlane is on a mission to help mothers build successful businesses and become entrepreneurs on their own terms. In this episode of our podcast, we cover lots of topics, like: -A walk through Gail's career and the different roles she held before Constant Contact. -A deep dive into the story of Constant Contact and how they overcome the odds to build one of the most successful tech companies in the Boston area. -The spider web effect that Constant Contact has made to the Boston tech ecosystem with several CEOs, founders, and executives who are building companies. -All the details on Pepperlane and why she is incredibly excited about the mission behind the company. -Why she is the company's Chief Product Officer versus CEO. -Advice on how to land a seat on the Board of Directors at a company. -And so much more. If you are listening to this podcast, then it is highly likely that you are interested in the entrepreneurial journey and all the lessons learned around building companies.
