It's like Dragons Den with a different kind of dragons, a group of young kiwi students with Dyslexia have got the chance to develop their entrepreneurial skills in tailor-made workshops this week - all the way from initial idea through to pitching to a tough audience - their parents. Many change-makers throughout history like Albert Einstein and Henry Ford had Dyslexia, and it's estimated that 35 percent of entrepreneurs in the United States have the learning disorder. Dean Bragonier, who's running the workshops, said while Dyslexia is a challenge it also provides a unique set of skills which are invaluable for starting a business and even changing the world, Luka Forman has more.

Unfortunately, his life took a downward spiral due to addiction, leading to failed relationships and a desperate attempt to end it all. But Dave's path took a transformative turn when he reached out to Alcoholics Anonymous and found support from a person named Lauren. Through AA meetings and the guidance of his fellow members, Dave began his journey to recovery. It was during this time that he came across Tony Robbins, initially skeptical of his messages but ultimately finding inspiration in Robbins' teachings. Dave took a leap of faith and invested in Robbins' Personal Power program, which ignited his passion for personal growth. Today, he combines his military background with his newfound knowledge to create a rite of passage called the "do no Harm firewalk" for veterans. As a firm believer in the power of reaching out for help, Dave highlights the urgency in addressing the high rate of veteran suicides. During our conversation, Dave challenges our audience to let go of excuses and change their stories to create a better life. Drawing inspiration from individuals like blind climber Eric Weinmeyer and the daring acts he has learned, Dave encourages us to push through our self-imposed limitations and embrace our potential. In addition to his work with veterans, Dave is a member of Rotary and is actively involved in efforts to support and uplift this community. The trend of higher education employees leaving their jobs before they have been offered another is an under-mentioned aspect of the “Great Resignation”. Whether the reason could be due to caregiving for a family member or friend, or the acceleration of wage growth in sectors outside of higher ed, it has highlighted a lack of pay, work/life balance and/or growth opportunities (i.e. “career paths”) for those who work at colleges. Simply put, we have focused on that for our students, but we have done a poor job of mentoring and growing our employees. This is especially important to those who start as entry level staff in academic advising, athletics marketing and communications (events and promotions), and media who want to be able to rise through the organization. After searching for an answer to her problem and finding nothing, Michele decided that she would invent one.Michele moved to Grande Prairie, AB from BC 21 years ago and never left. She met her husband 10 years ago and they have two beautiful kids. Michele worked in office administration most of her career, and then in 2019 when her daughter was 2 and she was playing with our vent covers, she came up with a crazy idea - what if she invented a childproof vent cover? Since then she's designed, patented, and manufactured a childproof vent cover that sells online. She has recently auditioned for Dragons Den Canada, and would love to get her product into retail stores so it is accessible to more people.
