In this episode I am joined by the architect Tom Kundig of the Seattle based studio Olson Kundig. We talk about two of their projects, the Costa Rica Treehouse and Rio House.Costa Rica Treehouse is a property built entirely of locally harvested teak wood. It is inspired by the jungle of its densely forested site on the Pacific Coast and rises above the tree canopy to provide views of the surf at nearby Playa Hermosa beach.Rio House is a steel and glass box that hovers above the land, supported by two concrete piers. The property provides a discreet hideaway for the owner couple to retreat from the distractions of city life. The elevated living space provides spectacular views of Rio de Janeiro, the sea and the famous Christ the Redeemer statue.In the interview we discuss the similar and the contrasting themes across the two projects. Both homes are elevated from the ground,  designed to respond passively to their environments and  are very open to the elements, yet both of them are totally unique to their context and to their owners.At the end of the episode, I ask Tom the three questions I ask all my podcast guests;– what really annoys him about his home?– what house has he visited that has really inspired him?– and, if he could choose anyone to design him a new house, who would he choose?I hope you enjoy listening!

En esta Semana Santa 2022, de las 290 playas revisadas por la Comisión Federal para la Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios (Cofepris), sólo Playa Hermosa, en Ensenada, Baja California, no es apta para bañarse en ella, mientras que 99.6% de las playas son clasificadas como aptas, de acuerdo con los resultados del primer muestreo del programa Playas Limpias 2022.Los análisis de laboratorio realizados en más de mil novecientas muestras de agua de las playas de mayor afluencia pública de los principales destinos turísticos del país, casi todas tuvieron menos de 200 puntos de enterococos por cada 100 mililitros de agua.La mayoría de las playas estuvieron por debajo de 100 puntos de enterococos por cada 100 mililitros de agua, pero hubo algunas que estuvieron por encima, como son Playa Rosarito II (175), Zihuatanejo playa principal (166) y Playa Mocambo (112), en Baja california, Guerrero y Veracruz, respectivamente.

Tara grew up on the beaches in Southern California. She loved the ocean very much. Often, it would be a real struggle to get her out of the water at sunset. Even when she moved to Costa Rica for a study abroad from her university, Tara's longing for the ocean was like a fire she couldn't put off. Every so often, she finds herself sitting with and listening to her surf instructor friends. However, surfing seems to be off her options. Then, she decided to just go for it and eventually, formed a lasting bond with the waves.Tara shares more of her story and how her supposedly, four months of study turned into 14 years of journey towards sustainable surf tourism. She also shares her motivation behind this project and provides a wider perspective around the impact of tourism on the environment and the local community.
