On January 8, Portland Brewing, one of Oregon’s original craft breweries, took to Facebook to announce that it would be closing its doors forever in early February. And one of our favorite Pacific Northwest craft beer sites, the New School, took the opportunity to reach out to current and former owners and brewers of Portland Brewing for their memories and reflections.Everybody’s take on this sad event is 100% worth your time. But we found Art Larrance, who founded the brewery in 1986 along with two friends), overtly political reflections particularly impassioned, whether you agree with him or not.Join your host Sean Reynolds, owner of Summit Properties NW and Reynolds & Kline Appraisal as he takes a look at this developing topic.Support the show (https://buymeacoff.ee/seattlepodcast)

On February 5, 2021, Portland Brewing will close its doors for the last time. The brewery’s closure marks the end of that scrappy, DIY era of craft brewing. And while it’s sad, a review of what Portland Brewing accomplished also reveals what a success its 35-year run was.

Craft Brew News – 11/29/19(Stories Courtesy of Brewbound – www.brewbound.com)Hopworks Urban Brewery Opens Mug Club to Members of Closed Portland Breweries’ ClubsAfter a spate of craft breweries and cideries closing in the Portland, Oregon, Hopworks Urban Brewery announced it will extend its mug club membership to members of similar clubs at any now-closed businesses. The craft brewery also invited former workers to apply at its taprooms.Hopworks founder Christian Ettinger said in a press release “When we heard about the recent closures of Portland institutions, we felt a void in the community,” “A lot of livelihoods and social occasions are affected by these closings, and we want to help, whether it’s honoring closed establishments’ mug clubs or helping people who have lost their jobs get back on their feet.”Former employees of closed businesses are invited to apply for jobs at Hopworks’ locations in Portland and Vancouver, Washington. The offer is valid through December 31 and provides consumers with 21 oz. pours for the cost of 16 oz. pours and 10% off merchandise and growler fills. In the past year, Portland has seen the following businesses close: Cider Riot, Coalition Brewing, Rock Bottom Brewery & Restaurant, Lompoc, Bridgeport and Burnside. Widmer Brothers, Portland Brewing and Alameda closed taproom locations, though their brands continue.Asahi Bets Big on BeerAsahi Group Holdings has doubled down on acquisitions of breweries outside its home market of Japan.CEO Akiyoshi Koji told reporters that his goal is for Asahi to lead the premium beer segment in every market it’s in, according to a report on Yahoo Finance. Koji helped propel his company to growth through a blockbuster $11 billion deal in July to acquire Melbourne, Australia’s Carlton & United Breweries from Anheuser-Busch. Under Koji, Asahi has spent more than $20 billion making other acquisitions across the globe. These moves are antithetical compared to how other global brewers are facing beer’s slowdown; many, such as Constellation Brands, are expanding into industries like cannabis or launching different beverage products like hard seltzers.Minnesota Remains Last State for 3.2 BeerMinnesota remains the last state in the nation to limit beer sales at grocery and convenience stores to beer with an alcohol by weight (ABW) of 3.2% or lower, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.Earlier this month, Utah loosened its laws to permit sales of beer that’s 4% ABW (about 5% alcohol by volume), leaving Minnesota as the last 3.2 beer state.Shady Oak Barrel House Under Fire for Derogatory PG&E Beer NameSanta Rosa, California-based brewpub Shady Oak Barrel House was overwhelmed with negative online reviews and phone calls from consumers after it named a beer “Fuck PG&E” to disparage executives of Pacific Gas & Electric, the utility company whose lines have allegedly sparked wildfires in California over the past several years.Negative reviews poured in from public utility employees and their supporters from across the country who took umbrage with the name. Shady Oak Barrel House posted an apology letter to its Facebook page last week, explaining the intent behind the name.“The name was not intended to go after honest hard-working people that have been and still currently are helping our community,” the post said. “It is not to undercut or attack those that have been away from their families in order to serve others in times of recent disasters. The name doesn’t suggest anything remotely like this; however, some people chose to read it this way.”To combat the deluge of one-star ratings, Shady Oak Barrel House has offered to discount beer purchases by $1 for any customers who leave “an honest Yelp, Google or Facebook review.”PG&E was found to be at fault by Cal Fire for 2018’s Camp Fire, which killed 85 people and destroyed nearly 20,000 structures, and is facing trial for its role in the 2017 Stubbs Fire, and is being questioned about last month’s Kincaid Fire, according to SFGate.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craft-beer-storm-podcast-30776075/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Support ACS In NYC MarathonI ran the NYC Marathon through the American Cancer Society and I am aiming to raise $32,000 ($3,200 Minimum X 10X) - please follow link below to donate what you can - $25, $50, $30K! - Onward... - Here is link –http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=94035&pg=personal&px=49477898&fbclid=IwAR2mBEvhF1wMA_BbHPhkavichNSFrE9Y9gi2RVZzfQ_4Da5Sht7gvH9rY_k*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? PDXISH's latest guest is one of the Portland’s most beloved icons, The Unipiper! The flame-throwing, unicycling bagpiper, who is actually a cute, married, nerd named Brian Kidd, shared his newest initiative, Weird Portland United (WPU), ushering in a whole new chapter of Portland weirdness. Kidd also shared his unique collaboration with Portland Brewing, Unipiper Hazy IPA. Through its beer sales Portland Brewing. Unipiper Hazy IPA represents the first of Portland Brewing’s “Keep Portland Weird” year-round series of collaborations. The series features distinctly Portland collaborative brews with the aim of highlighting each collaborator’s contribution to keeping Portland weird. Since 2007 The Unipiper has been riding his unicycle around uniquely Portland attractions and festivals dressed as a variety of famous characters, from Darth Vader to Bigfoot, while playing a set of flame-throwing bagpipes. For this first beer in the series Portland Brewing will donate $5,000 to help kickstart Weird Portland United. WPU is a new nonprofit organization that will discover, support, and cultivate up-and-coming and long-standing purveyors of weird through official Weird Awards, an official register of Weird Historic Places, the Weird Portland Museum, tours of Weird Portland, a Weird Portland Festival, and more.
Today: Sarah won a major award and is very excited about it, how does one act when they have found out how prestigious they are, and we were joined by the delightful Brian Kidd (aka The Unipiper) to talk about his upcoming beer release with Portland Brewing, 'keeping Portland weird', and his new non-profit Weird Portland United, which focuses on creative folks & projects in Portland that continue to make the city as unique as it is. Have a great afternoon all!

Welcome back to another installment of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast. Inspiring Oregonians to Get Active, Have Fun, and Give Back. We host family-friendly, 5K fun runs that start and end at some of Oregon's best breweries. In today's show, Nathan reflects on our 2017 season, thank a bunch of people who made it happen and hear from a few of our participants. We'll also give you a sneak peek into the 2018 season! 2017, By The Numbers In 2017, we hosted 18, 5k fun runs, at 16 different breweries. We were at Portland Brewing twice (once for the Hoppy Earth Day Brewfest), and at two of the Hopworks locations (Powell and Vancouver). In 2017, we had 2,061 participants, and based on our best guessitmation, nearly 1,300 different people ran at least one event, meaning, a whole bunch of you ran more than one. People like Kim C, Kim W, Mark (there are three of them, you know who you are), Robert, Chris, Bill, and Laura (to name a few), ran in 5 or more events, which is pretty impressive. We also kept track of the number of pints of beer you all drank, or at least the ones we purchased. Between all participants, volunteers, partners and our musical guests, that number is, approximately, 2,466. You also ran 5,111 miles or 8225.4K. We raised just over $4,000 for the Oregon Brewshed Alliance, The Portland Parks Foundation, and Life Vest Inside. Thank you for making our second season such a memorable one. The participants, you, are indeed an inspiration. Hearing some of your stories helped Drew and I realized the diverse backgrounds we all have. From those working in the medical profession to creative types, teachers, lawyers, insurance providers, entrepreneurs, active military personnel and so many more. We all share a deep love for running and beer. But it's not really about the beer and running for us. It's about bringing people together as part of a community. Many of our participants ran their very first organized 5K this year, and we feel so honored they did so with us. Whether or not they run in a whole bunch more of our events, we hope that running and being active becomes a lifestyle for all of you. We also know that some of you are hardcore runners, doing other timed races in the area. We appreciate you too and love that you chose one of our events to take it easy for a day. We hope that bringing together these two different types of runners inspires everyone to stay active, have fun, and give back as we all discover and enjoy the intricacies of craft beer in this great state of ours. After our last event of 2017 at Stickmen Brewing in Tualatin, Oregon on November 11, I walked around and interviewed some of our participants. I wanted to get a sense of why they decided to spend a Saturday morning with us. Here are a few of my favorite quotes: It's laid back, low key, no pressure! Running and beer...what else is there to say? Easy way to get back into running after an injury. Feel like family..like that it's a small group of people. It's just really fun! And a lot more, so listen now!
In 1984, BridgePort Brewing (initially Columbia River Brewery) opened in an old rope factory in what is now the Pearl district of Portland, Oregon. Back then, they produced a whopping 600 barrels (these day's they have a capacity around 100,000). This was shortly before the law changed allowing brewpubs to sell alcohol in the same place it was made. Dick and Nancy Ponzi, BridgePort's founders (who you may recognize more for their vineyard), teamed up with a few other local brewing legends to get the law changed. Names you may recognize like Kurt and Rob Widmer, Mike and Brian McMenamin as well as and Art Larrance, Fred Bowman, and Jim Goodwin, of Portland Brewing. Their goal was to legalize the brewpub, a place where breweries could make and sell their beer, something not happening at the time in the United States. Well, good news, it passed! The rest is history of course and the craft beer revolution had begun, with BridgePort sitting at the center of it. No matter what you think about BridgePort today, the significance of their role in helping to establish Oregon as a beer mecca is undeniable. On this episode of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast, I'm talking with Jeff Edgerton, Brewmaster at BridgePort Brewing. If this is your first time hearing about what we do, we host 5K fun runs that start and end at Oregon's best breweries. Register here and join us for our next run! Back in February of 2017, we hosted a 5K fun run with BridgePort as part of our winter series. At that time, I had the opportunity to sit down with Jeff and pick his brain about all things BridgePort beer. He's been there since 1998 and has been in the beer business longer than that, so there was a lot of wisdom to absorb. Jeff and I talked about a bunch of topics related to BridgePort, as well as what's changed over the years in the craft beer scene here in Oregon. He also shared some beer tips with me, like why you shouldn't drink it too cold, the reasons they choose specific ingredients for their recipes and some of the science behind it (Jeff's background is in biology). Jeff also describes, in detail, the stories behind the three beers we shared together. Notes: BridgePort Homepage. Register for our next 5K fun run. Full video interview.
