It is a pleasure to welcome back Nick Bisley, an international relations expert from La Trobe University in Melbourne. We were keen to sit down with him in the virtual studio to examine Australia’s response to the global pandemic. We were most interested to understand the relative success of the Australian effort to flatten the curve of infections of the virus when it was clear that Australia had suffered a crisis of competence in dealing with the bush fires that had ravaged Australia in its summer. (Please listen to the ‘Now’ Series Ep. 18: an interview with Steven Slaughter ‘Australia Burning’: The politics of Climate Change in Australia”). The answers Nick provides are quite revealing of how Australia is well and badly governed. Nick is currently Head of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at La Trobe University in Melbourne and Professor of International Relations. Previously Nick served as the Executive Director of La Trobe Asia at La Trobe University. Nick is the author of many works on international relations, including Issues in 21st Century World Politics, 3rd Edition (Palgrave, 2017).

Scale Up Your Business Podcast
What Every Business Can Learn From The Turnaround Process

Scale Up Your Business Podcast

If you are in a business trying to grow and scale, some of the key principles in turnaround are applicable to you! Previously Nick was the ‘turnaround guy’ – going into privately backed equity businesses, usually when it wasn’t going where it should and turning the businesses around. In this episode he shares his expertise and experience of what it actually takes to successfully turn around a business and why the principles and strategies of a turnaround are also applicable to scale up. When a business is in turnaround everyone is galvanised and focused and that same principle is a superpower for a business, in scale-up. The 2 critical components of a turnaround are cash and time management, listen in to hear how to get them into your business and the vital importance of being present and focused.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Business development Key customers – visit all your customers and reinforce your relationships. Bundle up sales to make them attractive and sell more. Lapsed (past) customers - Most small businesses are only serving around 10-20% of the customers they have acquired over the years they have been in business Going back to past customers and re-engaging can be a good way to quickly get business because there is already a relationship in place JV and affiliate partners -  You have value in your customer base and if you can partner with someone who has a product your customers will choose then you can quickly get money coming in. Promotion - You should use free or low-cost media vehicles to promote you, your personal brand and your business. social media is a quick way of getting your message out there. The more leads you have, the more conversations you can have that may lead to a sale. Costs The opportunities to outsource are huge and there are many ways to use the expertise and experience of freelancers with specialist skills to work towards the result you want. Delete all the costs that are not critical to the business and re-negotiate all contracts. Rent is a big cost in any context – Asking for a ‘rent holiday’ could save your business. Review your credit terms – the length of time you take to pay your suppliers, 30 days should be a minimum – it’s about time and cash. Cash strategies You may have excess inventory that could be sold or you can liquidate some debtors through offering a discount for paying in a very short time frame – it’s not about losing money it’s about getting cash into the business. grant funding – potentially free money because you fit the criteria of what a government wants to support,  but it takes some time to apply and secure this type of funding. Cash can be sourced from angel investors, family, friends and crowdfunding. Often HMRC will agree to deferment – because ultimately they want their money but you must agree on an repayment schedule. The cashflow forecast You need to be looking at this at least weekly. You have to understand exactly where your cash is going on a finite and intricate level and you need to know in advance if you have to take massive action to get yourself above the red line.   BEST MOMENTS ‘They are key customers because you have been able to solve a problem for them’ ‘Every business I go into I build some sort of referral program’ ‘The reason I feel confident and congruent in scaling up any business is because I’ve been through the pain of turnaround’   VALUABLE RESOURCES Scale Up Your Business Podcast 90 Day Business Growth Accelerator website Nick Bradley LinkedIn   ABOUT THE HOST My name is Nick Bradley. On this week’s episode of the Healthy Wealthy and Smart Podcast, Nick Lucius and I chat about physical therapy wellness services. Nick is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist working with Barwis Methods as an Applied Coach in Port St. Lucie, Florida. In this episode, we discuss: -How to transition from episodic care to wellness services -The role of strength and conditioning in physical therapy services -Nick’s thoughts on the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist -How to develop a therapeutic alliance in a biopsychosocial model framework -Advice for #FreshPTs -And so much more!   When communicating desired outcomes to patients, it is important to stress the long-term wellness and quality of life aspects. He states, “have them understand that the goal is not to run you through the ground and to make you hurt, it’s really to empower you to live the rest of your life in the most positive and healthy way possible.”   In contrast to the biomedical approach to patient care, the biopsychosocial model can allow you to empower the patient and ultimately develop buy in for future wellness needs. He believes, “it really would benefit us to not look at us as a lifelong PT or lifelong clinician insinuating the mechanic, ‘Oh yeah, just come back to me and I'll fix you up.’ It's not like a car, you have feelings and emotions and thought processes, it muddies the water really fast, and that’s what really benefits having that wide range of education from strength conditioning to pain science to traditional physical therapy and that ties it all back in together.”   As a new graduate, Nick offers some advice for fresh PTs to, “Keep the hunger for knowledge and the hunger to really make substantial and life changing change for these individuals. When you get a couple of cases that might be discouraging or make you feel uncomfortable, everyone feels uncomfortable and at some point they got comfortable being uncomfortable, they got very used to having that hunger to try to keep driving to be better and better.”   For more about Nick: Nick graduated from the University of Michigan with a Doctor in Physical Therapy in 2015.
