Steelers insider Nick Farabaugh from Penn Live dot com joined the show. Nick said his money is on the Steelers taking Shedeur Sanders 21st overall in a few nights. Nick said he heard his meeting with the Steelers went well. Nick's belief is that the Steelers did not expect Sanders to fall to them, but now that it's more realistic, it's becoming very clear how much they like his bravado and confidence. Nick said QB mobility is not a big thing to them since they are clearly pursuing Aaron Rodgers. How much can Sanders move? Nick the mechanics are the things to work on with Sanders – he has it figured out above the shoulders. Nick thinks the plan for Sanders would be to start the guy in 2025 at some point. But how much changes if Rodgers is here? How much do the Steelers like Jaxson Dart? What has changed with the Steelers brass since the Senior Bowl and combine? Out of middle round QBs, Nick likes the idea of Will Howard being the Steelers selection at 83rd overall. Nick doesn't see Tyler Shough happening. Nick confirmed what he has heard about Derrick Harmon, who has some medical red flags going into the draft, which could result in him falling a bit in the 1st round. Poni went through some of the defensive line class and Nick explained why the Steelers should double-dip. More w/ Nick – Nick said the 2026 QB class will be better than what we see this year and that he personally wouldn't draft Shedeur Sanders on Thursday night. Nick said the Steelers clearly value the ‘high-floor' that Sanders has, but questioned how much better that makes them in the AFC. Nick doesn't think there is a ton of blue chippers in this draft, so trading back will all depend on who is on the board. Nick is pretty adamant that the Steelers are not going to trade George Pickens and they will wait until after the draft to talk contract. Nick thinks 3rd round or later is the spot for WR, but doesn't think there's a guarantee that one gets picked early. Where does Roman Wilson fall into things on offense? Poni asked Nick about some guys that could fall to them on Thursday. More w/ Nick – The guys talked about the concerning idea of the Steelers drafting Shemar Stewart on Thursday night, who Nick compared to DeMarvin Leal. Nick doesn't like the idea of the team taking a big safety in the 1st round either. Nick expects the 3rd or 4th round pick to be a runner. Nick isn't sold on the Steelers signing a veteran RB unless they come away without one this weekend. Nick said the Steelers really like Kenneth Gainwell in that backfield as the third man. How could it work if the Steelers have a trade back scenario?

Steelers reporter Nick Farabaugh from Penn Live dot com joined the show. Nick told the guys about his trip to the Senior Bowl last week. Nick said the Steelers are not interested in the QB crop in this year's draft, at least they didn't show it in any of the group he saw. He thinks the team is a lot more interested in the 2026 QB class. Nick brought up the defensive line group because that was the crew that garnered the most attention from Steelers brass. Nick described the DL group as an all-time deep position group. How much does Keeanu Benton have to step up? Nick talked about how involved Mike Tomlin is in the Senior Bowl activities. More w/ Nick – Nick talked about the overall draft class in 2025 and how some scouts think the middle part of it is flush and there aren't a ton of elite players. Nick doesn't understand the hype over Jaxson Dart as he climbs up the ranks. How are some of these QBs? Nick is interested in some of the tools that guys can offer, but he thinks there will be some better players slipping into the middle rounds. Nick does not see Quinshon Judkins being a Steeler because he is too similar to Najee Harris as a player. Nick thinks Emeka Egbuka is a very high-floor player, but the ceiling may not be sky-high. More w/ Nick – Nick said it's so hard to tell if George Pickens will be a Steeler by Week 1, but he expects him to follow the Brandon Aiyuk playbook in training camp. The key to Pickens' performance banks on the team getting him involved early. Nick talked about the Steelers current QB situation and why he still likes Justin Fields back as the team's starting QB. But how much will they hold him back in the offense or cater to his strengths? Nick described the offense under Arthur Smith as a disaster in the first year. He speculated that Russell Wilson could get, maybe, $15M per year.

Today we have Nick. He is 41 and lives in Richfield, MN. He took his last drink on November 8th, 2023.   In one week, registration for one of our best international sober travel itineraries opens, as we are going back to Peru October 4th – 15th, 2025. We are starting off in Cusco, then head into the sacred valley, and of course we're doing the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.   Next Monday our first ever AF Songwriting Course starts at 8pm EST. Connect with other sober musicians and improve your own song writing skills.   Sponsors for this episode include:   Better Help – 10% off of your first month   [03:19] Thoughts from Paul:   Imagine if aliens were cruising the universe and made a stop on planet Earth and they saw human beings drinking a substance that appeared to be damaging their lives.   But first, this is revealing of the power of the unconscious mind, or the paradigms in our society. If you take crack, cocaine, heroin and meth and right off the bat it's like, yeah, that will fuck your life up. But with alcohol, which has the data to show it's the most dangerous drug on the planet, it's flipped. Thankfully the correct messaging is starting to come out, but we have a way to go still.   Paul shares what he imagines would be the conversation between aliens and humans as they begin to ask questions about why we humans are consuming a toxic substance that has no health benefits and leaves them incapacitated the next morning.   [08:24] Paul introduces Nick:   Nick is married with three young children. He says he is a pop culture aficionado. He enjoys hunting, fishing, camping and spending time at their cabin a few hours away. Nick is big into fitness as well.   Being around alcohol was a normal thing for Nick growing up. He drank some in high school but hit the ground running in college with all the typical vices. He says he never had any major consequences and did well in school. The “work hard, play hard” mentality ran strong even after college.   Nick met his wife on a flight and soon after they began a long-distance relationship. Around this time Nick says his drinking was causing some negative behavior and people were noticing. A comment from his dad had Nick feeling some embarrassment so he started trying to moderate his drinking by limiting his consumption while socializing but drinking more at home alone. After attempting to moderate with the use of an app, Nick found himself drinking more in secret. He and his wife would have conversations about it, but he wasn't ready to quit. Nick was hiding bottles of alcohol throughout the house and drinking daily and going out less, so it wasn't as obvious to others that he had an issue. It was a constant battle in his mind.   One afternoon, Nick drove with his wife to pick up their daughter from preschool. When he came out of the school, his wife had taken the driver's seat. He had driven to the school drunk, and she decided enough was enough. She took them to the police station and had him arrested. When he came by the house the next day he expected her to kick him out but instead she hugged him and shared she just wanted him to get better.   Nick was able to stay sober for three months, but wasn't doing it for himself so it didn't stick. His drinking ended up worse than ever after that until he finally hit rock bottom. He wasn't doing well physically or mentally at this point. He woke one morning and decided to go to treatment that week.   Nick threw himself into treatment and experimented with several modalities. In the past he was resistant to AA but now embraces it as an abundant resource and enjoys the community. Nick's health has greatly improved, and he has been able to get off of all medications in addition to ditching the booze. Fitness is his medicine now, Nick says.   Nick's parting piece of guidance: You can do it. Do it for yourself, don't do it for someone else.   Recovery Elevator Alcohol is shit and we both know it. On this Earth Day special I'm delighted to be joined by Nick, who founded his business Wooden Journey 5 yrs ago on Earth Day. Earth Day, is an annual celebration on the 22nd April that brings together people from around the world to celebrate the Earth & share their commitments to support the environment. My conversation with Nick was the perfect way to celebrate the intention of this day. Nick is one of those beautiful, kind, compassionate & inspiring people, who's courage, enthusiasm & passion is both infectious & impactful & I hope that hearing his story will leave you all feeling re-invigorated & empowered to know that it's a lot easier than you think to be part of the solution, to help bring to life the vision of a better future where we return to right relationship with the earth & the positive news outweighs the bad.Nick had an experience we will all relate to, feeling a sense of profound despair due to the state of the environment, that left him with the question, what can I do? He took this question & from it sprung an amazing idea, to find a way to have an impact & that allowed others to join him on the journey. Alongside his friend, working in their spare time & on a bootstrap budget, they taught themselves to roast coffee & created several speciality roasts from Organic, Fair Trade beans. With the profits from the sales of their coffee they invest in restoring the earth, supporting tree planting organisations & other wildlife initiatives, their impact is already tangible.Nick is a wonderful example of Active Hope in action & reminds us that there is power in following your dreams, not giving up even when it feels insurmountable & never doubting  that it is possible for you to make a difference.Learn more about Nick:Nick is the founder of Wooden Journey and is a coffee roaster, specializing in Fair Trade, Organic coffee with a portion of his sales going towards both reforestation and conservation movements with the organizations that he has partnered with. Nick has a humble beginning at the start of his journey. As he started learning about all of the terrible things happening globally on the planet we all call home, he had a very empty feeling he has said he'll never forget. It all started there on his journey to make it accessible to someone to stand behind his mission and cause for people that felt the same way that may know how to help. To date, he is proud to have already planted over 35,000 trees and fully conserved 200+ acres of wildlife habitat.Website:  www.woodenjourney.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/woodenjourney/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@woodenjourneyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/mywoodenjourney/Other Useful Links: Earth Day: https://www.earthday.org/Support the showThank you for being part of this journey with me, please Subscribe so you don't miss our future episodes, leave a review & share with friends to help these messages ripple out across the world. The Fed has put the American economy under extreme pressure to lower inflation. Mortgage rates are now at twenty-year highs, job openings are starting to fall, “cautious consumers” return, and a 2024 recession is still in the cards. Everything the Fed wanted is finally happening…but it's not happening fast enough. Can anything solve the inflation we're up against?

In today's conversation, I am joined by Dr. Nick Epley, Director of the Center for Decision Research at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. I was introduced to Nick by the amazing Ayelet Fishbach, who has been on The Brainy Business twice before. Nick studies social cognition—how thinking people think about other thinking people—to understand why smart people so routinely misunderstand each other. He teaches an ethics and well-being course to MBA students called Designing a Good Life (sounds like a perfect fit around here, and we do talk about this in the episode). His research has appeared in more than two dozen empirical journals, been featured by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, Wired, NPR, and more.  As Nick will share with us today...you may not realize it, but you were born with an extraordinary ability to understand what others think, feel, believe, want, and know. You are a mind reader! It's a sixth sense you use every day, in every personal and professional relationship you have. Today, Nick will share a bit of what scientists have learned about our ability to understand others and the surprising mistakes we so routinely make. Show Notes: [00:45] In today's conversation, I am joined by Dr. Nick Epley, director of The Center of Decision Research at the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business. Nick studies social cognition. [02:52] You may not realize it, but you were born with an extraordinary ability to understand what others think, feel, believe, want, and know. You are a mind reader.  [05:02] Nick shares about himself and his background. He is a professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago.  [07:32] There are systematic gaps between our beliefs about someone else and reality. If we can understand what those gaps are we can understand why they exist.  [09:38] The quality of our social relationships is a critical determinant of our happiness, probably the most important. Other people are the single biggest source of our happiness as well as our misery.  [11:55] One of the big barriers to people being more social in their daily lives is that they underestimate how social others are.  [13:35] We get that risk-reward trade-off with other people wrong. We think it is riskier to reach out and engage than it is.  [15:05] Failing to realize that other people are social is a barrier to us. [17:43] One of the common things we find is that people are often surprised at how much they learned, how enjoyable the conversation was, and how much they have in common with the other person.  [20:22] Conversations have a magnetic quality to them. It draws people together and surprises people.  [22:02] If you don't like small talk…stop having it. When you take an interest in other people they reveal interesting stuff and take an interest in you.  [24:18] Take an interest in another person - that is how you have good conversations.  [26:26] If you care about somebody then you ask them questions that matter to them. Treat other people like they are good friends.  [28:09] When people imagine having a meaningful conversation with a stranger, they think the other person is not going to want to hear about it or care about it. When they get into it and open up to each other it generally goes way better than people expect.  [29:56] Having a culture where people are open, honest, and willing to engage and connect with one another, they feel connected to the place because they are connected to each other is the kind of culture that every organization wants to have and helps get the job done.  [31:56] People's reluctance to reach out and engage with others is exactly the kind of barrier that organizations would want to get rid of.  [33:38] The things that basic psychology has to teach people in business is the same thing we have to teach people in their everyday lives.   [36:02] If you are bringing people into your organization, think about interviewing with your culture in mind.  [38:46] When you make connection activities routine, common, easy, and part of the habits so people aren't thinking about it, you design it with the context so it just happens this way that is how they spread through organizations and you sustain them.  [41:30] Often organizations don't choose to make these types of opportunities a priority.   [43:52] Typing and texting lack the emotion and the thinking behind those words that you get from a person's voice.  [45:32] Share kind thoughts with other people.  [46:35] Think about somebody you feel grateful to and write them a note. Try to connect with a stranger. [49:17] Melina's closing thoughts [50:36] Take the time for real human connections, even small ones each day and see what happens.  Thanks for listening. (A homage to the wizard of Oz) From Above & Beyond, a flock of Cosmic Creatures in flight spot a golden glimmer from afar; they descend dimensions-- to get a closer look; Closing in on the universe within the confines of a massive structure, which propels itself seamlessly through galaxies faster than the speed of light and sound, though she appears as a large golden space station, slowly drifting through the atmosphere. Manned by yet unseen beings, the golden ship descends upon Skrillex, almost silentl— a swishing whir as the ship, more similar to a futuristic building, an ovaline rounded structure seemingly structured in brass, gold, and silver as it docks to the soft soil of planetary terrain. The landing is soft enough not to have awaken Ū, still sleeping; but an immense light pours from the openings of the ship, waking her--and blinding Sonny as he finally approaches from behind, having been searching for her. She is drawn into the light; he shields his eyes as the beings emerge from their massive station. Monologue/Montage I fell in love with you...it was an accident. I fell in love with you, because I had to; I hadn't thought about it before, but i've been thinking about it ever since. Had I succeeded in my attempted suicide, we wouldn't have come face-to-face… Had I succeeded in my attempted suicide, I'd have no reason to write something so pathetic as this, pititul letter, which you will probably never read. Probably, anyway. I've spent a majority of my lifetime very deeply troubled, yearning for all the attention one could ever crave--until suddenly, I no longer craved any at all. Solitude, rather than isolation, became sacred, and safe to me; It was in the solace and quiet of my very own world, that you entered my kingdom...and it became ‘ours'. Silence. Nature. Astrology. My greatest found pleasures, in a cavalcade of endless self-doubt, self-loathing...a tiresome collection of all the hatred I've harbored for myself in my twenty-something years. I fell in love with you...I didn't mean to. I didn't mean to do anything, except be. Another festival, another escapade...another chance to dance, in the sunlight--the moonlight, under stars… And under the stars, is where I was forced to find you. Now, it seems, can't escape your presence--or lack-thereof. Unrequited? Perhaps. But, not unprovoked. I love you because it is in me to do so. I will always love you, always. There is a world where you're in love with me, as I am you; All I can do now, is hope that this is that same very world, and that as days go by, we draw closer to one-another, rather than further apart. In truth, friendship, in the very least, would serve as a worthy reward...for all the worry, all the wonder, and all the willing I've done for you; in honesty...I'm ashamed in my inability to let go--yet also proud, that I am able to love this much, this hard. To see you with someone else, now, would be a gentle relief; to know that you are kept in love, with graciousness...a subtle gift, an answer to a prayer I asked. Loneliness, I wouldn't wish upon you for anything--love is, in fact, my whole wish for you--be it mine, or not. While I can wish that it will be mine, I've also wished for you, the very best--I would want not for my flaws to burden you. Flaws are what create our perfection; God is, as I am. Losing you, the flame of fear that set my heart and soul to fire; Cancerous, weakened, plagued--premonitions impolitely penetrated my fragile, eggshell mind… the death of a friend, fast-forwarded and reflected into my mind's-eye; How could I forget a face like yours--eyes like those? How could I not know you, as I have? Tears bearing your name roll over my nose, like the rain on a rose...the burden of belonging to one, rather than some; To all, rather than none. So now, I keep my favorite photo of you in my phone...a comfort, to the weary and wounded heart I carry. I can pretend that your sweet voice accompanies mine, as I sing to soothe myself, as I sway in solitude; A gentle kiss, I imagine to give, if ever the chance. I love you, without reason to--and with every reason to, I love you. Find me, again As the ship departs, charging to go into warp speed, Sonny is left alone on his own planet; as a slight panic falls over him, A key-like object falls from the ship as it dissappars at warp speed into a portal. As his hands clap together, catching the object, the sound rings outward--this clapping pages The Skrillex, which lands promptly beside him, exclaiming-- "I AM SKRILLEX"; he has never seen this ship before, however proceeds onto the ship as though familiar with extra terrestrial phenomena all together. We only see him enter the ship; we do not follow him inside, but instead cut to Ū on the Interdimensional SpaceTime Station. On God. I need you to fix the Everything. Everything; The Machine What's wrong with it? We don't know. So, how can I fix it without knowing what's wrong? The Everything, Sir. What's she doing? The Federal Reserve is a misunderstood arm of the government. Is it public? Is it private? Does congress have any control over it? Most Americans don't know. Because of this constant confusion surrounding this shadowy subsection of the government, Americans are struggling to understand what's going on with interest rates, mortgage rates, bond yields, and more. But there's one person who knows the Fed better than the rest.Nick Timiraos, reporter at The Wall Street Journal, has been tracking every move the Federal Reserve makes. Whether it has to do with inflation, interest rate hikes, job growth and decline, or anything in between, Nick knows about it. As the foremost expert on the Fed, we took some time to ask him some of the most critical questions on how the Fed's decisions could affect investors in 2023. With so many variables up in the air, Nick helps pin down precisely what the Fed is thinking, their plans, and whether we're on the right economic track. You'll hear how the “overcorrection” of inflation could pose a massive threat to the US economy, the significant risks the Fed faces today, the three “buckets” that the Fed is looking at most, and why we're targeting a two percent inflation rate in the first place. We also get into when the Fed could stop raising interest rates, how investors should react, and whether or not we'll see three and four-percent mortgage rates again. In This Episode We CoverHow the Fed's 2022 moves affected the US economy (and whether they'll pay off in 2023)Massive money printing and why this time was designed not to repeat 2008's mistakes The Fed's “overcorrection” on inflation and how it could send us into a more brutal recessionThe three “phases” we must get through to see lower mortgage rates Interest rates, federal funds rates, and when the Fed could halt their rate hikes Employment, the labor market, and why excessive wage increases could hurt the economy The 2023 outlook for real estate investors and when we'll see low interest rates againAnd So Much More!Links from the ShowFind an Investor-Friendly Real Estate AgentBiggerPockets ForumsBiggerPockets AgentBiggerPockets BootcampsJoin BiggerPockets for FREEOn The MarketJoin the Future of Real Estate Investing with FundriseConnect with Other Investors in the “On The Market” ForumsSubscribe to The “On The Market” YouTube ChannelDave's BiggerPockets ProfileDave's InstagramKathy's BiggerPockets ProfileKathy's InstagramHear Our 2022 Interview with NickBook Mentioned in the ShowTrillion Dollar Triage by Nick TimiraosConnect with Nick:Nick's TwitterWSJCheck the full show notes here: https://www.biggerpockets.com/blog/on-the-market-68Interested in learning more about today's sponsors or becoming a BiggerPockets partner yourself? Dollar-cost averaging is advice we've all been given. But, during a crash, or even a dip, it can be enticing to throw all your savings into an investment with hopes that it'll quickly skyrocket back up. Is this a smart move, or would this ruin the “consistent investing” advice altogether? To help clear things up, we've brought on Nick Maggiulli, author of Just Keep Buying: Proven ways to save money and build your wealth. Nick, just like Dave, has been a spreadsheet freak for a long time. They bond over their love of data and how looking at the numbers can help you make much better investing decisions. In a time where FOMO-investing, financial freak-outs, and anxious feelings toward inflation run rampant, Nick provides some soothing words on how any investor in any asset class can successfully start building wealth with little-to-no effort.Dave, Nick, and expert guest Henry Washington also riff on REITs (real estate investment trusts), real estate investing, and advice for new investors. Whether you prefer stocks, bonds, rental properties, crypto, or a mix of all four, this episode will provide some much-needed advice for you to make it through the recession with far less stress. In This Episode We CoverDollar-cost averaging and whether this investing strategy works for real estateFOMO investing and why so many people buy at the top The two different definitions of dollar-cost averaging and which is the better bet Investing during an economic crash and how even uninformed investors can make moneyAdvice for brand new investors and why now may be the best time to investAnd So Much More!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets ForumsBiggerPockets AgentJoin BiggerPockets for FREEOn The MarketJoin the Future of Real Estate Investing with FundriseConnect with Other Investors in the “On The Market” ForumsSubscribe to The “On The Market” YouTube ChannelFind an Investor Friendly Agent in Your AreaDave's BiggerPockets ProfileDave's InstagramHenry's BiggerPockets ProfileHenry's InstagramBooks Mentioned in the ShowReal Estate by the Numbers by Dave Meyer and J ScottJust Keep Buying by Nick MaggiulliConnect with Nick:Nick's WebsiteNick's TwitterNick's InstagramCheck the full show notes here: https://www.biggerpockets.com/blog/on-the-market-44Interested in learning more about today's sponsors or becoming a BiggerPockets partner yourself? The Fed and interest rates—what one does, the other follows. Over the past two years, we've seen interest rates crash to all-time lows, only to skyrocket back up to decade-long highs at the start of this month. This turbulence has swept the legs of many prospective homebuyers and has caused the housing market to go from red-hot to lukewarm in only a matter of weeks. What's causing these rapid fluctuations and are rising interest rates the new norm? There's arguably no one better to ask this question than Nick Timiraos, reporter and economic correspondent at The Wall Street Journal. Nick keeps a tight pulse check on The Federal Reserve at all times. In his newest book, Trillion Dollar Triage, he discusses why The Federal Reserve made the shocking moves they did in 2020, and how their decisions affect every American today.Dave Meyer and James Dainard use today's interview with Nick as a chance to ask the how, why, and when questions about The Federal Reserve, inflation, interest rates, and the housing market as a whole. Nick discusses the warning messages that The Fed has been sending over the past few months that should give investors an inkling of what is to come in the second half of 2022. If you're a real estate investor or casual homebuyer, these signals could dramatically shift when and how much you offer on a home.In This Episode We CoverThe main goals of The Federal Reserve and how they change markets to achieve themHow the 2008 housing market compares to the 2022 housing marketWhere The Fed thinks we're going in 2022 and how interest rates will affect thisThe biggest factors influencing today's high inflation rates and when we can expect to see a more normal economyThe silver lining behind a slower housing market that real estate investors should pay attention toHow investors can increase their chance of investing success in the coming yearsAnd more economic obscurities!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets ForumsThe Wall Street JournalOn The MarketDave's InstagramDave's BiggerPockets ProfileJame's BiggerPockets ProfileJame's InstagramConnect with NickNick's Twitter ProfileEmail Nick: Nick.Timiraos@wsj.comNick's Wall Street Journal ProfileCheck the full show notes here: https://www.biggerpockets.com/blog/on-the-market-4See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The only difference is that one does it with science and the other with magic. There's actually a really compact and on-topic Nostalgia Blinded ep in the first half of this one, and you're completely in your right to bail before the Nicks begin shouting about “Scoob!”. Of course, that would make you a coward, and I know you're not a coward dear listener. Not only are you not a coward, but you actively WANT to hear about Yogi Bear finally snapping. I may be projecting a bit. This week, those meddlin' Nicks solve yet another podcasting mystery by talking about Scooby-Doo! Follow Andy Huber (@yafroglog on Instagram) for amazing art stuff!
