Former 49ers director of player personnel and, most recently, general manager of the Tennessee Titans Ran Carthon sat down with "49ers Talk" co-host Jennifer Lee Chan to dissect the most pressing needs on San Francisco's offseason agenda. As a former front-office stalwart, Carthon takes us behind the scenes of the 49ers' braintrust and provides a unique perspective on how they evaluate talent and negotiate contracts, as well as their overall vision for roster construction. Next, Jennifer and NFL broadcaster Andrew Siciliano discuss the ways the 49ers could approach their biggest needs this offseason -- whether through free agency or the draft -- and how the 49ers can reconcile the rise in the NFL salary cap and players' salary demands with their overall strategy of getting younger and more affordable at impact positions throughout their roster. Also, Matt Maiocco and Jennifer break down the curious market for backup QB Mac Jones and which NFL teams could be in line for a new starting quarterback. -- (4:00) Where does Mac Jones fall into NFL starting QB carousel for this coming season? (6:00) Looking around the league, which QB starting situations might require a player of Jones' caliber to come in and compete (12:30) The differences between Sam Darnold and Mac Jones, and why the system and situation has to be right for Mac (16:00) 49ers and Trent Williams have a successfully established relationship; it's mutually beneficial for Trent and 49ers to move forward together (25:30) With Mac Jones not necessarily being shopped on the market, it will take a big deal to entice the 49ers to move him given his impact last season (26:00) Carthon on Purdy's development since his debut -- Shanahan had to call three different offenses with three different QBs in Purdy's first season (30:00) How Fred Warner's development from a big nickel into a box MIKE LB deserves credit from the defensive visions of Robert Saleh, DeMeco Ryans (32:00) From the top down -- Carthon said the 49ers as an organization were buttoned up in what types of players they sought and acquired Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. https://api.spreaker.com/v2/episodes/70303105/download.mp3 In their first major move of the offseason, the New York Jets have shipped defensive end Jermaine Johnson off to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for massive nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat. Johnson, a former first-round pick and true fan favorite, will be reunited with Robert Saleh who now has the head coaching job for the Titans. By adding T’Vondre Sweat, the Jets bring in a 350+ pound nose tackle who has not disappointed since entering the league two years ago out of the University of Texas as a second-round pick. Graded by the folks at PFF at 83.4 for his overall grade, and 79.3 against the run. That’s where the Jets hope he’ll pay off most as their defense was consistently steamrolled by opposing running backs last season. The deal also appears to answer one very important question for the Jets this offseason. By adding T’Vondre Sweat and moving on from Jermaine Johnson, one would assume Gang Green will be shifting to a 3-4 base defense. That’s not to say Sweat couldn’t dominate in a 4-3, but this is the perfect first move a team would make if they were looking to add a true space eater to anchor a 3-4. The move may also give us some idea as to what Gang Green will look to do in the draft, as any undersized defensive ends may not be in the picture while the priority on adding bigger linebackers and ends comes in to focus. Making the switch from Johnson to Sweat will also add roughly $10 million in cap space for the Jets as free agency approaches. On a Hey, Mary Kay! edition of the Orange and Brown Talk podcast, Mary Kay Cabot and Dan Labbe dive into the Browns' hiring of new defensive coordinator, Mike Rutenberg. They start by discussing why the Browns opted for a first-time coordinator and how Rutenberg's experience under coaches like Robert Saleh will allow him to run a system similar to Jim Schwartz's. Mary Kay and Dan also explore the importance of keeping the defensive staff in place for a smooth transition and the challenge Rutenberg faces in earning the trust of veteran players who were loyal to Schwartz. Then, the conversation shifts to offseason roster questions. They look at the future of cornerback Martin Emerson Jr., who is recovering from a ruptured Achilles, and whether there's a place for him with the emergence of Tyson Campbell. Finally, with the NFL Draft on the horizon, they answer a subscriber's question about whether the Browns might trade down from the No. 6 overall pick to accumulate more draft capital.
