We pick up where we left off with Jorah Mormont stealing a boat to navigate with his captive, Tyrion. Aboard a merchant ship, Jaime and Bronn sail to Dorne to rescue Myrcella and getting betrayed and caught up while doing so. Cersei has the Iron Bank on her ass and they want 10% of what's owed to them...and she ain't got it. She sends Mace Tyrell to go talk to them as well as getting him out of the way.  Cersei also plots with the High Sparrow to try and manipulate the faith to do her dirty work. The faith attacks the bars and brothels and takes Loras as captive for being gay. We also see Ellaria and the sandsnakes decide to do what Oberyn's brother won't do...avenge his death against the Lannisters. The Red Priestess tried to throw that hotbox on Jon and he refuses. We've made it to yet another midpoint, and boy is this one a doozy. Building off the last couple episodes, this is where the tension and the action really takes off, with the episode ending with a shocking, out of nowhere battle as we witness the end of the Three Eyed Raven & the Children of the Forest, the beginning of Bran's ascent to the new position of Three Eyed Raven, the death of another Direwolf, and beloved Hodor. Oh Hodor. While it does raise a few logistical questions as this episode famously introduces time travel, the way it provides a perfect open and shut case of Hodor's condition as a result of Bran's meddling plays out poetically. Elsewhere, Sansa receives news from Littlefinger and her & Jon set out on their expedition to bring the fight to Ramsay's door. Daenerys says goodbye to Jorah, but orders him to find a cure to the greyscale, in a touching tribute to their time spent together. On the Iron Islands, the long awaited Kingsmoot takes place, with Yara losing rather easily to Euron, forcing her & Theon to go on the run. In Meereen, Tyrion enlists the help of a Red Priestess to start spreading the good word of Daenerys across the city, much to Varys' chagrin. In Braavos, Arya is given her first assignment since getting her eyesight back: to kill an actress named Lady Crane who's participating in a play satirizing the War of the 5 Kings. On Dragonstone, King Stannis Baratheon's entourage debate how to actualize his claim. Stannis' unforgiving nature makes allies hard to come by. There's some infighting, culminating in an attempted poisoning that backfires. Simon and Mackelly take a careful sip. Chapter Review: Maester Cresson ruminates on various omens and portents: a white raven signifying the end of summer, the red comet, the growing influence on Dragonstone of Melisandre the Red Priestess of R'hllor, his aching old bones, and so on. He has a friendly chat with Stannis' daughter princess Shireen and her creepy fool Patchface. He meets with Stannis but every idea for bolstering their numbers or courting allies is rebuffed by the king. The only concession seems to be the idea of marrying Shireen to Lord Robert Arryn of the Vale. Stannis' grievances now include his own younger brother Renly claiming the throne, Robb Stark styling himself as King in the North, his dead brother Robert for favoring Ned Stark over him, and so on. Stannis' open mindedness is not helped by Melisandre, who claims to have seen his ascension to the throne in the flames. Stannis feels his future is set, he need not compromise. Cresson decides to do away with Melisandre. As a peace offering, he offers her a goblet of poisoned wine. She is suspicious but drinks most of it down, Cresson swallows the rest. As he chokes and dies, she informs him that her Lord of Light really does have power, as she is unaffected by the toxin. For episode eleven Suzy speaks to Iris van Herpen and Game of Thrones actress Carice van Houten as they collaborate for a digital presentation for this season's Autumn/Winter 2020-21 Haute Couture Week. The fashion industry has had to rethink how to present the collections, and each house has turned to submitting digital presentations instead of the traditional live-show format.One such designer on the couture schedule I have been lucky enough to catch up with is Iris van Herpen. Here she talks to me about the short film she has submitted to the Fédération de la Haute Couture and how she called upon her fellow Dutch friend and Game of Thrones actress, Carice van Houten, as muse, inspiration and collaborator on her fashion film, “Transmotion”.Van Houten plays a far more gentle character in Iris’s fashion performance than she does on GOT. “Iris’s work feels like it lifts you up and completes something in you, like a second skin and another dimension,” Carice says.In our interview, Iris describes the “Transmotion” couture dress that Carice wears as “a diaphanous bloom of silver white organza, and translucent layers within an undulating form, tracing the fluid outline of the creation”. Made by Iris under lockdown, its name refers to “visionary or creative perceptions of the seasons and the visual scenes of motion in art and literature”.“I believe fashion has a big influence on who we are today and really reflects where we are heading, inspiring us to recreate ourselves and to re-see our identities and even how we perceive ourselves,” Iris says.“The red hair was 50 per cent of my character,” Carice says of her GOT role as Melisandre, the Red Priestess. “I felt so empowered, and in fact the dress – which is the opposite of Iris’s dresses – was really restricting, but it definitely helped me to build that character.”Iris’ couture film, directed by Ryan McDaniels, references Dutch graphic art and at the same time mirrors the Iris spirit, which mixes high modernity with history. Iris has called upon her Dutch heritage not only by using Carice – but also by referencing Dutch artist Escher as an influence.Iris began showing in Paris in 2007 and I watched her quickly move from Ready-to-Wear to Couture – which she unofficially calls “tech-couture” – where in her hands delicate embroideries and traditional techniques are “replaced by code”. The designer is even known for stating, “Tech just can’t keep up with me!”Her extraordinary skill is in melding the soft and tough elements of the natural world with the forces of technology and innovation, merging art and science with craftsmanship and technology. Using a diaphanous bloom of white silk organza, like fronds frozen in time, and delicate crystalline filaments that sprout from the centre, the “Transmotion” dress is a masterpiece of couture. Combining the futuristic with the naturalistic, “branches” of satin are laser cut, but hand stitched, to form central roots like mycorrhizal networks.With her knowledge of fashion, her understanding of science and her skill in melding the two different characters, Iris’s work links to creation, growth and regeneration. The second episode, Stormborn, kicked the door down with swift elaboration on Azor Ahai.   Wut?   That’s the Song of Fire and Ice’s version of Jesus that is going to send the Night King and his army of the dead to somewhere very, very warm. This is huge in the theory land of book fandom, like R+L = J big. At some point soon, Dany and John will meet. Fangirl hearts are pitter pattering everywhere, this episode of the podcast included.   Just as high as the episode takes us, it also thoroughly grosses us out. Thanks again Citadel and your witchy ways. Then when you think you’re going to vomit, it washes you over with joy and sorrow when we see Nymeria again. Yes. 605 Game of Thrones "The Door" was epic! There's plenty of Red Priestess to go around! It seem like everyone has one of their own! Sansa is no longer the little girl Littlefinger left with the Boltons. She lets Littlefinger know she does not need his protection anymore. We find out Euron Greyjoy have plans for Daenerys... wedding bells maybe!
