Islington Baptist is a church for the Islington and wider Newcastle community sharing the life-changing message of Jesus. Our sermon / Bible teaching is a central part of our gatherings. Luke 1:35-49 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.” 38 “I am the Lord's servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. 39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” 46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name.

Biddy Early (1798-1874) was born in Killanena and lived most of her life in Feakle in Co. Clare. She was a ‘bean feasa' or wise woman (literally a ‘woman of knowledge'). She was famous as a woman of otherworldly knowledge and the power to cure people's ills, whether physical, psychic, spiritual, or even economic. In more recent times she has been casually called a witch, but that word and concept belong to other cultures. This notion did not really exist in the Gaelic culture of 19th century West of Ireland and it is inaccurate to apply it to Biddy Early. These stories are told mostly by local people Paddy O' Malley, Peggy Hogan, Mary O' Connor, May Tuohy, Rita Flaherty, Kevin Dunleavy and Joe Tuohy, with two from West Clare (Francie Kenneally, Catherine Talty). The interviewers are Tomás McConmara, Paula Carroll and Tara Sparling.Find transcript of the story told by Francie Kenneally hereMany Cuimhneamh an Chláir oral history collections are available in the Digital Repository of Ireland. The being that occupies the body has two qualities—presence and attention—which is all that is needed to awaken. Attention has will and can place itself anywhere inside or outside the body. The present is the domain of the Divine and of love, which is not the emotional, sexual, or romantic love that we are taught and programmed to believe in. To be in service to the Divine, attention has to be present. If we're not aware of the body, we're identified and not present. Masculine energy holds attention in place, allowing the feminine to emerge by being receptive. When we're present we can see what's going on in the inner world. A distinction can be made between mechanical attention and conscious (or second) attention. Presence and attention in the inner world, which wears ego down, are like wind and water acting on stone in the outer world. We can watch the action of the ego structure, which slowly gives up its energy to the being, to attention and presence, but this is difficult because attention is weak. The great majority of humans live a life of constant distraction, identification and imagination. “There is only God” is a profound teaching. If God is love, then why is there violence and evil? In its mechanical state, the egoic structure alters love to assert its own desires. Conscience is easily overrun by the will of ego. Present attention corrects whatever is out of alignment with the love of God. Love—not my will, but Thy will—is the supreme intelligence which works through us. Ego does not want present attention; it wants identified attention. Effortless effort can only be unraveled by direct experience. Super effort does not come just from me but the being in harmony with the Divine. Red Hawk is an acclaimed poet and the author of 13 books, including Self Observation, Self Remembering, The Way of the Wise Woman, Return to the Mother, and Book of Lamentations.

People simply dialled a number to reach a story, each story was broken up into parts, so if they wanted listens could create story mash-ups.The project included a live, family-friendly performance which launched the exhibition in each venue.Sounds Used in This EpisodeWoodland ambience: Woodland Atmos 05 03-06-2022.wav by apintofmild -- https://freesound.org/s/640188/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Gavel: Judge Hammer Courtroom by Moulaythami -- https://freesound.org/s/735101/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Thumping wall: Fight_scene.wav by ProxValor -- https://freesound.org/s/684909/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Bubbling water: water bubbling by ultraaxvii -- https://freesound.org/s/591151/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Crows: Crows Bird Squawking Fight by JackMenhorn -- https://freesound.org/s/236307/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Fight: Fight_scene.wav by ProxValor -- https://freesound.org/s/684909/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Gate squeak: Foley_Gate_Metal_Squeak_Stereo.wav by Nox_Sound -- https://freesound.org/s/566398/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Coins: Counting Me Shillings.mp3 by husky70 -- https://freesound.org/s/161315/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Fabric ripping: Fabric Rip.wav by fotoshop -- https://freesound.org/s/93346/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Farm ambience: Farmyard Ambience Revisited.wav by Benboncan -- https://freesound.org/s/69648/ -- License: Attribution 4.0Door shutting: shut the door by jerkysynth -- https://freesound.org/s/473540/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Chopping veg: Cutting a Carrot by Erbsland-Music -- https://freesound.org/s/634119/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Smash: Bottle Smash.aif by MegaPenguin13 -- https://freesound.org/s/118198/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Pigs: R01-69-Long Pig Squeals.wav by craigsmith -- https://freesound.org/s/479660/ -- License: Creative Commons 0Intro/Outro music for podcast episode: Folk Guitar Music Track by Dvideoguy -- https://freesound.org/s/246315/ -- License: Creative Commons 0
11-10-24 Biblical-Literacy Mark continued in the series Lesser-Known Women of the Bible. Today's woman was a "wise woman” from 2 Samuel 20, who helped save her city by turning over Sheba to Joab and his army. The storyline: Sheba was a worthless man who encouraged the northern tribes of Israel to rebel against King David. Worthless in those days meant not living for God, did not know God, and didn't use what he had to honor God. The woman termed wise was shrewd, crafty, and cunning. The contrast: Worthless leads to death, and wise leads to life. Points for home included these three passages: Prov 10:8 Prov 12:18 Prov 14:16 Listen to Mark teach on the culture and setting of this lesson's time. The nation under King David was a loose confederation of twelve tribes, not united. Mark's explanation of worthless and wise show us a better understanding of the people then and how we should live today.

On the Secret Witch Show today our guest is Maude Hirst. Maude is a Meditation Specialist, Founder, Speaker, Coach, and Author of the Intuitive Whispers Oracle Deck specialising in making meditation and its life-changing benefits accessible to all. Maude was an actress best known for playing Helga in the hit TV show Vikings before becoming a leading wellness practitioner and founder of the bespoke meditation company EnergyRise. In this episode we dived into the importance of connecting to our ‘intuitive whispers' in the journey of healing transformation - and how to deepen into our wisdom so we can embrace our true selves. Exploring Maude's personal journey of navigating darkness in her life, she highlighted the four stages of healing and how she journeyed from a career in acting - where she felt disconnected - to her spiritual awakening and how she learned to trust her intuitive nudges to embrace who she is, and create an Oracle Deck that helps others access their own intuition. Listen to the end for our perfect card pull! What You'll Learn from this Episode: We are all ‘actresses' in life; most of us need to learn how to stop wearing masks and playing ‘character roles' and truly embrace our authentic selves - and we can begin this journey by tuning into our intuitive whispers The process of healing transformation requires four stages - Listening (to our intuition), Clearing (our limiting beliefs), Rebuilding (consciously creating our true self), and Action (taking aligned steps) Fear can come up in the journey of connecting to our intuitive whispers - and it's important to welcome and embrace that, moving through it, rather than avoiding it - darkness is part of the journey to ourselves Tuning into our intuition is a daily practice - connecting to our bodies and grounding into nature can really help us to hear ourselves - as can intuitive journaling, or pulling Oracle cards It can be challenging to own who we are - especially as healer witches - because there is societal conditioning to overcome - that's just another layer of the onion to be healed, and an invitation into the next spiral around the stages of healing transformation. The message empowers individuals to cultivate inner strength, set healthy boundaries, and foster peace in their relationships and personal lives.
On the Secret Witch Show today, Nicole explores one of the biggest challenges most Secret Witches face: how we can overcome the challenge of balancing our busy lives with our deeper calling to being a healer. She dived into the crucial topic of how to create space for our healer witch, offering a practical ‘workshopy' episode and guided meditation for women who feel a deep spiritual calling to become healers, but struggle with self-doubt and burn-out - and don't feel they have space to delve into the deep work. In this episode, as part of her #HundredHealers vision, Nicole provided both practical steps for time-management, mental and physical space creation and advice on how to integrate magic into our daily life - and a healing journey with an Archetypal Remedy for activation of the part of you that knows how to manifest a magical life: your inner Creatrix, also exploring what resistance to that really means for our healing. What You'll Learn from this Episode: The fear and doubt that arises as part of becoming a healer is normal - and not a sign you're not cut out for it (it's the ‘Secret Witch' wound - and just means there's healing to do of your wounded healer) Feeling we are lacking time and space to do the deep work in our busy mundane lives is part of this wound - and wants some loving healing (the practical workshop and journey in this episode was potent for helping that) Cultural views often label necessary healing work as ‘selfish,' ‘self-indulgent' or ‘non-essential' - a perspective that gets internalised by many women, making it harder to prioritise our spiritual growth Resistance is a healing invitation. It is showing us there's something butting up here against what we know - and we want to go into that with loving curiosity. Like: “why am I feeling resistance? What is my belief here?” There are some very practical steps we can take to create space for our witch - and, if we have resistance to those, it's a sign there's more healing to do around choosing ourselves and claiming our purpose as a healer - we can do this by journeying with Archetypal Remedies (and particularly the Creatrix, who knows her manifesting power) Resources and things that we spoke about: Join our upcoming 5 week journey with Archetypal Luna: www.nicolebarton.co.uk/luna Listen to the show on the “How, What and Why of Archetypal Remedies” : www.nicolebarton.co.uk/secret-witch-podcast/episode-68 Download our Starter Pack - www.nicolebarton.co.uk/sign-up Social: Tiktok - @archetypalapothecary Instagram - @iamnicolebarton Instagram - @archetypalapothecary You Tube - https://www.youtube.com/@secretwitchsociety Join our Secret Witch Society: www.facebook.com/groups/secretwitch Website: www.nicolebarton.co.uk Thank you for listening, we'd love to know what comes alive for you in this week's episode, so please let us know. Going after your dream, vision, business, the thing you were put on this earth to do, can be very vulnerable....especially when putting your work out into the world, and you don't see the results you want (and know you should have). When the sales aren't happening, it's easy to go into a spiral of, "What is wrong with me?" "What is nothing working" "Am I not enough"...But when you can stop making a lack of sales mean something is wrong with you, and instead begin asking some powerful questions, this changes everything.I have watched way too many women give up or pivot every 5 seconds or create new offers when 1 isn't working (and burn out because of it), when what's needed it being able to ask the questions that will lead to results. In this episode I share what you can begin to do instead of falling down the "spiral of death" as I call it, and instead tap into the Wise Woman within you to make your dream and vision happen...and to get your incredible work into the hands of those who need it!Enjoy!TatianaP.S. I'm doing something new to help you take an offer that is not selling/not selling like you know it should and turn it into an offer that sells. So often I see someone put out and offer and I can tell right away if it will sell or not, and what to refine to have it sell.I will look over your offer, along with sales page, website, socials, emails, etc and record a custom-and-tailored-to-you video sharing what you need to shift in your offer to open up a floodgate of sales and clients! You can find all the details of the Offer Breakthrough HERE.If you have any questions, or would like to share aha's, send me an email to tatiana.amico@gmail.com
In his parable The Wise Woman, George MacDonald tells the story of two girls, whose selfishness brings misery to all, including themselves, until a Wise Woman puts them through a series of tests to help them become “lovely” again. After the girls fail each test and suffer shame and isolation, one of them, Rosamond, finally realizes she can’t change herself. “Couldn’t you help me?” she asks the Wise Woman. “Perhaps I could,” the woman replied, “now that you ask me.” And with the divine help symbolized by the Wise Woman, Rosamond begins to change. She then asks if the woman would forgive all the trouble she’s caused. “If I had not forgiven you,” the woman says, “I would never have taken the trouble to punish you.” There are times when God disciplines us. It’s important to understand why. His correction isn’t driven by retribution but by a fatherly concern for our welfare (Hebrews 12:6). He also desires that we may “share in his holiness,” enjoying a harvest of “righteousness and peace” (vv. 10–11). Selfishness brings misery, but holiness makes us whole, joyful, and “lovely” like Him. Rosamond asks the Wise Woman how she can love a selfish girl like her. Stooping to kiss her, the woman replies, “I saw what you were going to be.” God’s correction too comes with love and a desire to make us who we’re meant to be.
Today's conversation on Back Porch Theology took place very recently at The Kerygma Summit here in Franklin, TN and this particular conversation was kind of the “chips and queso” moment of the whole weekend for me because I had the undeserved privilege of sitting down with some of my favorite female Christian leaders from around the country and gleaning from their collective wisdom. I framed the question that I posed to all of them like this: At sixty I know much less about God than what I thought I knew about Him at forty and what I pretended to know about Him at twenty. But what I now know to be true of God – namely His unconditional love and immutable faithfulness – I know in the very marrow of my bones. Then I asked each of them – many of whom are leading large ministries – what they now know to be true of God in the marrow of their bones. Their answers were gut-level honest, deeply encouraging, appropriately convicting at times, and always God and others honoring. This conversation was a living example of Psalm 68:11 - the Lord announces the word, and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng. Plus, since these saints came from various streams of the church, it was also a master class in unity and it reminded me of Jesus's response to John's question in Mark 9: “Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop because he was not one of us.” “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us. Christian unity is not the same thing as uniformity, y'all. We don't have to agree on every, single jot and tittle of what is theologically nuanced, but if we can agree on the fact that faith in Jesus Christ is the only way sinners like us can be reconciled with God, as well as the authority of God's Word, we're family. Remember the Bible also reveals that a divisive spirit is one of the six things that God hates (Proverbs 9) and whenever possible He calls us to be at peace and harmony with each other (Romans 12). Today's conversation is going to be like spiritual Gorilla Glue, it's going to fasten us tighter to our Creator Redeemer and tighter to the community of faith so please grab a cup of coffee or a glass of sparkling water with a wedge of lime or a thimbleful of wheatgrass juice and your Bible – unless you're trimming your roses, of course; mine have sprouted out with more enthusiasm than Einstein's eyebrows during the past few weeks of warm weather – and come hang out on the porch with us. Welcome to a new episode of The Literary Life podcast and an interview with special guest Dr. Vigen Guroian, retired professor of Religious Studies and Orthodox Christianity at the University of Virginia and author of twelve book and numerous scholarly articles. Angelina Stanford and Thomas Banks discuss with Dr. Guroian the new edition of his book, Tending the Heart of Virtue. They start out talking about how the first edition of this book came about, which leads into a discussion about the current approach to fairy tales and children's stories in both academia and the publishing industry. Other topics of conversation include the problem with reducing stories down to a moral, story as mystery, the place of fairy tales in classical education, and the Biblical literacy of the authors of fairy tales. Dr. Guroian also shares his thoughts on people like John Ruskin and Rudyard Kipling. Finally, he shares some suggestions on finding good editions of fairy tale collections. (Scroll down for links to his book recommendations.) Commonplace Quotes: It seems to me appropriate, almost inevitable, that when that great Imagination which in the beginning, for Its own delight and for the delight of men and angels and (in their proper mode) of beasts, had invented and formed the whole world of Nature, submitted to express Itself in human speech, that speech should sometimes be poetry. For poetry too is a little incarnation, giving body to what had been before invisible and inaudible. C. S. Lewis, from Reflections on the Psalms Reason is the natural organ of truth, but imagination is the organ of meaning. C. S. Lewis Inertia has served them so well that they did not know how to relinquish it. E. M. Forster, from Pharos and Pharillon “Happy children,” say I, “who could blunder into the very heart of the will of God concerning them, and do the thing at once that the Lord taught them, using the common sense which God had given and the fairy tale nourished!” The Lord of the promise is the Lord of all true parables and all good fairy tales. George MacDonald, from The Elect Lady The Spring By Thomas Carew Now that the winter's gone, the earth hath lost Her snow-white robes, and now no more the frost Candies the grass, or casts an icy cream Upon the silver lake or crystal stream; But the warm sun thaws the benumbed earth, And makes it tender; gives a sacred birth To the dead swallow; wakes in hollow tree The drowsy cuckoo, and the humble-bee. Now do a choir of chirping minstrels bring In triumph to the world the youthful Spring. The valleys, hills, and woods in rich array Welcome the coming of the long'd-for May. Now all things smile, only my love doth lour; Nor hath the scalding noonday sun the power To melt that marble ice, which still doth hold Her heart congeal'd, and makes her pity cold. The ox, which lately did for shelter fly Into the stall, doth now securely lie In open fields; and love no more is made By the fireside, but in the cooler shade Amyntas now doth with his Chloris sleep Under a sycamore, and all things keep Time with the season; only she doth carry June in her eyes, in her heart January.
