How to navigate miscarriage as a healing rite of passage

On the Secret Witch Show today our guest is Siân Marie Pilkington. Siân is The Wild Mama who has raised her babies and has landed shakti-based, goddess-devoted, and in service to the taboos of blood, birth, sexuality and death. A queer celt, Magdalene, radical birth worker, herbalist, and ceremonialist, she guides femmes back to the Great Mother, blending primal intelligence with embodied, Earth-honoring magic.  Siân now works purposefully to decolonize the rites of passage we've been taught to fear, reclaiming birth, postpartum, eros, and endings as sacred. Mentoring doulas and space holders in altered states, ecstatic birth, and collaborative community care, her work is a love letter to those ready to remember, rewild, and bring initiations home. In this beautiful episode about death we explore Siân's sacred and unique perspective around miscarriage as a natural, ancient healing ‘rite of passage' - rather than the taboo, over-clinicalised, sanitised, dissociative experience it can be created as by our world.  Sharing the healing transformation she was able to reclaim from her own miscarriage, and the ancient wisdom passed down from elders, Siân shines a light on the interconnectedness of grief and initiation - and the role of ritual and ceremony in alchemy.  Providing practical advice on holistic practices, herbs and remedies to support healing, she illuminates the powerful remedy that can be found (for us all) in learning how to see and hear ourselves and share our stories - touching on shame, rage and grief - and how the witch can help heal the societal avoidance of death and grief. What You'll Learn from this Episode: Miscarriage is over-sanitised in our patriarchal culture - which has it commonly not seen as the significant ‘peak experience' and transformative rite of passage that it can be, similar to live childbirth and other life transitions Miscarriage can be a deeply emotional and spiritual journey where we learn how to meet ourselves, face and process intense emotions, including grief and loss - and even pleasure - yet it is also often seen as ‘taboo' and shameful Left alone, and if we can allow ourselves to sit patiently, whilst allowing everything to move through us, the body has a natural wisdom in how to process miscarriage - and we can attune to our bodies to navigate this.  We are broken in the process - we are giving birth to death - and, often, it is also the path to reclaiming our wisdom. If we have had an over-clinicalised miscarriage, we can still journey with reclaiming this rite of passage - this threshold - through ritual and ceremony, reclaiming parts of ourselves that have felt lost to this process. Telling our story - and being seen and held in sisterhood - is a deeply crucial step in our healing journey, for personal closure. Sharing it with others also offers a remedy for them, too. We are remedies for those like us. One minute everyone's getting engaged, the next they're having babies, and just when you think you've got this adult thing figured out, there's a whole new transition waiting around the corner. I'm turning 40 this year, and suddenly menopause has appeared on my radar. Not because I'm experiencing it yet, but because I'm starting to realize it's this massive life event that nobody talks about until it's happening. And by then, most women are completely blindsided. It's wild when you think about it. We get the puberty talk. We have baby showers. But menopause? Complete radio silence. Like we're all supposed to just silently suffer through one of life's biggest transitions because... periods are icky and aging is scary? Give me a break. Half the population goes through this, and we still can't talk about it without whispering. Today our guest is Tamsen Fadal. She's a news anchor who found herself collapsed on a bathroom floor from symptoms nobody had warned her about, only to discover she was in menopause. After being left to figure it out alone, she's now fighting to change how we handle this universal female experience. This coincided with the dates when Lucia wanted to get her new tarot deck, the Elysian Tarot, photographed, for its Kickstarter campaign. Together, Anne and Lucia discuss the origins and creation of The Elysian Tarot, starting with Lucia's meet cute with Tarot. She explains how the project is both a personal odyssey and a tool for self-discovery. Lucia shares how a health crisis got her to reconnect with her body, spirit, and creative essence. The Clare Oral History Podcast

Biddy Early (1798-1874) was born in Killanena and lived most of her life in Feakle in Co. Clare.  She was a ‘bean feasa' or wise woman (literally a ‘woman of knowledge'). She was famous as a woman of otherworldly knowledge and the power to cure people's ills, whether physical, psychic, spiritual, or even economic. In more recent times she has been casually called a witch, but that word and concept belong to other cultures.  This notion did not really exist in the Gaelic culture of 19th century West of Ireland and it is inaccurate to apply it to Biddy Early. These stories are told mostly by local people Paddy O' Malley, Peggy Hogan, Mary O' Connor, May Tuohy, Rita Flaherty, Kevin Dunleavy and Joe Tuohy, with two  from West Clare (Francie Kenneally, Catherine Talty). The interviewers are Tomás McConmara, Paula Carroll and Tara Sparling.Find transcript of the story told by Francie Kenneally hereMany Cuimhneamh an Chláir oral history collections are available in the Digital Repository of Ireland.  Contributors above that you can explore in more detail in the DRI are Peggy Hogan, Mai Tuohy and Catherine Talty.BOOKS REFERRED TO:Biddy Early, The Wise Woman of Clare by Meda Ryan GLOSSARY OF TERMS‘Sí Gaoithe' (fairy wind):  A mysterious strong gust of wind that seems to whip up from nowhere on an otherwise fine day.  Said to be caused by the fairies.Baker's Bread: Bread bought in a shop (yeasted), rather than made at home (unleavened).‘Terrible Make Way':  A big fuss. Piseogs: A form of folk magic, always malevolent. The being that occupies the body has two qualities—presence and attention—which is all that is needed to awaken. Attention has will and can place itself anywhere inside or outside the body. The present is the domain of the Divine and of love, which is not the emotional, sexual, or romantic love that we are taught and programmed to believe in. To be in service to the Divine, attention has to be present. If we're not aware of the body, we're identified and not present. Masculine energy holds attention in place, allowing the feminine to emerge by being receptive. When we're present we can see what's going on in the inner world. A distinction can be made between mechanical attention and conscious (or second) attention. Presence and attention in the inner world, which wears ego down, are like wind and water acting on stone in the outer world. We can watch the action of the ego structure, which slowly gives up its energy to the being, to attention and presence, but this is difficult because attention is weak. The great majority of humans live a life of constant distraction, identification and imagination. “There is only God” is a profound teaching. If God is love, then why is there violence and evil? In its mechanical state, the egoic structure alters love to assert its own desires. Conscience is easily overrun by the will of ego. Present attention corrects whatever is out of alignment with the love of God. Love—not my will, but Thy will—is the supreme intelligence which works through us. Ego does not want present attention; it wants identified attention. Effortless effort can only be unraveled by direct experience. Super effort does not come just from me but the being in harmony with the Divine. 11-10-24 Biblical-Literacy Mark continued in the series Lesser-Known Women of the Bible. Today's woman was a "wise woman” from 2 Samuel 20, who helped save her city by turning over Sheba to Joab and his army. The storyline: Sheba was a worthless man who encouraged the northern tribes of Israel to rebel against King David. Worthless in those days meant not living for God, did not know God, and didn't use what he had to honor God. The woman termed wise was shrewd, crafty, and cunning. The contrast: Worthless leads to death, and wise leads to life. Points for home included these three passages: Prov 10:8 Prov 12:18 Prov 14:16 Listen to Mark teach on the culture and setting of this lesson's time. The nation under King David was a loose confederation of twelve tribes, not united. Mark's explanation of worthless and wise show us a better understanding of the people then and how we should live today.

On the Secret Witch Show today our guest is Maude Hirst. Maude is a Meditation Specialist, Founder, Speaker, Coach, and Author of the Intuitive Whispers Oracle Deck specialising in making meditation and its life-changing benefits accessible to all. Maude was an actress best known for playing Helga in the hit TV show Vikings before becoming a leading wellness practitioner and founder of the bespoke meditation company EnergyRise. In this episode we dived into the importance of connecting to our ‘intuitive whispers' in the journey of healing transformation - and how to deepen into our wisdom so we can embrace our true selves. Exploring Maude's personal journey of navigating darkness in her life, she highlighted the four stages of healing and how she journeyed from a career in acting - where she felt disconnected - to her spiritual awakening and how she learned to trust her intuitive nudges to embrace who she is, and create an Oracle Deck that helps others access their own intuition. Listen to the end for our perfect card pull! What You'll Learn from this Episode: We are all ‘actresses' in life; most of us need to learn how to stop wearing masks and playing ‘character roles' and truly embrace our authentic selves - and we can begin this journey by tuning into our intuitive whispers The process of healing transformation requires four stages - Listening (to our intuition), Clearing (our limiting beliefs), Rebuilding (consciously creating our true self), and Action (taking aligned steps) Fear can come up in the journey of connecting to our intuitive whispers - and it's important to welcome and embrace that, moving through it, rather than avoiding it - darkness is part of the journey to ourselves Tuning into our intuition is a daily practice - connecting to our bodies and grounding into nature can really help us to hear ourselves - as can intuitive journaling, or pulling Oracle cards It can be challenging to own who we are - especially as healer witches - because there is societal conditioning to overcome - that's just another layer of the onion to be healed, and an invitation into the next spiral around the stages of healing transformation.   Resources and things that we spoke about: Maude's Links: Maude's Website: www.maudehirst.co.uk Maude's Intuitive Whispers Oracle Deck (new release): https://maudehirst.co.uk/intuitive-whispers-oracle Maude's The members Club for the Mind: https://maudehirst.co.uk/membership Maude's 121 Mentorship: https://maudehirst.co.uk/mentorship Maude's Social:   Twitter - https://twitter.com/maudehirst Instagram -  https://www.instagram.com/maudehirst You Tube - https://www.youtube.com/c/maudehirst/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/maudehirstyoga/ Our Social: Tiktok - @archetypalapothecary Instagram - @iamnicolebarton Instagram - @archetypalapothecary You Tube - https://www.youtube.com/@secretwitchsociety Join our Secret Witch Society: www.facebook.com/groups/secretwitch  Website: www.nicolebarton.co.uk Thank you for listening, we'd love to know what comes alive for you in this week's episode, so please let us know. Today's conversation on Back Porch Theology took place very recently at The Kerygma Summit here in Franklin, TN and this particular conversation was kind of the “chips and queso” moment of the whole weekend for me because I had the undeserved privilege of sitting down with some of my favorite female Christian leaders from around the country and gleaning from their collective wisdom. I framed the question that I posed to all of them like this: At sixty I know much less about God than what I thought I knew about Him at forty and what I pretended to know about Him at twenty. But what I now know to be true of God – namely His unconditional love and immutable faithfulness – I know in the very marrow of my bones. Then I asked each of them – many of whom are leading large ministries – what they now know to be true of God in the marrow of their bones. Their answers were gut-level honest, deeply encouraging, appropriately convicting at times, and always God and others honoring. This conversation was a living example of Psalm 68:11 - the Lord announces the word, and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng. Plus, since these saints came from various streams of the church, it was also a master class in unity and it reminded me of Jesus's response to John's question in Mark 9: “Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop because he was not one of us.” “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us. Christian unity is not the same thing as uniformity, y'all. We don't have to agree on every, single jot and tittle of what is theologically nuanced, but if we can agree on the fact that faith in Jesus Christ is the only way sinners like us can be reconciled with God, as well as the authority of God's Word, we're family. Remember the Bible also reveals that a divisive spirit is one of the six things that God hates (Proverbs 9) and whenever possible He calls us to be at peace and harmony with each other (Romans 12). Today's conversation is going to be like spiritual Gorilla Glue, it's going to fasten us tighter to our Creator Redeemer and tighter to the community of faith so please grab a cup of coffee or a glass of sparkling water with a wedge of lime or a thimbleful of wheatgrass juice and your Bible – unless you're trimming your roses, of course; mine have sprouted out with more enthusiasm than Einstein's eyebrows during the past few weeks of warm weather – and come hang out on the porch with us.
