Frits Bolkestein bijvoorbeeld. Of Ronald Plasterk.

'This Was A Demonic Crime' Former FBI Agent On Release Of Leslie Van Houten

Dark Side of Wikipedia | True Crime & Dark History

The chilling events surrounding the infamous Manson Family murders still resonate, over half a century later. At the center of the terrifying tableau was Leslie Van Houten, a young woman whose part in these heinous acts has forever stained her life. Jennifer Coffindaffer, a former FBI agent, recently weighed in on the debate around Van Houten's possible release from prison. In her view, the nature of the crime was nothing short of demonic, and granting Van Houten freedom could set a dangerous precedent for society.   A Brief Recap: The Manson Family Murders To understand the gravity of the situation, we must delve into the horrifying events of 1969. The Manson Family, led by the charismatic and manipulative Charles Manson, embarked on a two-day killing spree in Los Angeles. Leslie Van Houten, a part of this murderous cult, was deeply involved in the murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. She was just 19 at the time.   The Crime: A Demonic Undertaking Jennifer Coffindaffer doesn't mince words when describing the Manson Family's actions. Labeling them as a 'demonic crime', she emphasizes the chilling cold-bloodedness that marked these murders. The cruelty and callousness displayed by the perpetrators, including Van Houten, showed a level of depravity that goes beyond the realm of everyday understanding.   The Argument for Keeping Van Houten Behind Bars Van Houten has spent the majority of her life in prison, where she has reportedly been a model prisoner, completing college degrees and acting as a mentor for other inmates. However, Coffindaffer insists that these commendable actions should not overshadow the demonic crime that put her behind bars in the first place.   Allowing Van Houten back into society could inadvertently send the wrong message. It could suggest that even the most horrific crimes can be redeemed over time, undermining the severity and seriousness of such acts. The release of a former cult member involved in heinous crimes can also open old wounds for the victims' families, causing them undue distress.   Societal Implications of Van Houten's Release From a societal perspective, releasing someone involved in such a disturbing crime raises questions about our justice system's efficacy. What does it say about our collective values if we grant freedom to individuals who have committed unspeakable acts against their fellow humans?   Moreover, it sets a precedent that might be hard to reverse. If Van Houten walks free, it paves the way for other criminals with similar pasts to seek and potentially secure their release.    Conclusion: Demonic Crimes and Lifelong Consequences  In the case of Leslie Van Houten, the demonic crime she committed as a young woman has defined her entire life. Despite her apparent transformation in prison, the severity of her actions in the past continues to weigh heavily on her present. As Jennifer Coffindaffer rightly points out, the nature of these acts necessitates a hard look at the potential implications of granting freedom to those who have wrought such devastation. For the good of society, some crimes must carry lifelong consequences. Want to listen to ALL our Podcasts AD-FREE? Can A Follower Of Charles Manson Ever Be Rehabilitated?

The news of Leslie Van Houten's release, a former follower of the infamous Charles Manson, has stirred up a storm of debate and concern, prompting many to ask: can someone so deeply influenced by a cult leader like Manson ever genuinely be rehabilitated?    Van Houten, once the youngest member of the Manson "family," was a central figure in the gruesome murder spree that horrified America in the late 1960s. Her subsequent incarceration, repeated parole rejections, and eventual release have sparked discourse about the effectiveness of rehabilitation for individuals involved in such severe criminal acts.    Rehabilitation within the criminal justice system is premised on the belief that individuals can change, acknowledging the potential for personal growth and transformation even among those who have committed heinous acts. However, public sentiment often clashes with these ideals when considering high-profile cases like Van Houten's.    The nature of Van Houten's crimes, carried out under Manson's influence, has been a significant factor in skepticism about her potential for rehabilitation. The Manson "family" operated much like a cult, with members demonstrating an alarming level of commitment and obedience to their leader, Charles Manson. This loyalty was on gruesome display in the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders, which Van Houten participated in at Manson's behest.    The capacity for someone as deeply indoctrinated as Van Houten to rehabilitate depends heavily on their ability to break free from the cult's influence and confront their actions. It involves a profound deprogramming process, psychological therapy, self-reflection, and sincere remorse.    According to prison reports, Van Houten has apparently made significant strides toward rehabilitation during her incarceration. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees, led self-help groups for fellow inmates, and worked as a tutor. Moreover, she has consistently expressed remorse for her actions, acknowledging the pain and suffering she inflicted.    However, the shadow of her past looms, casting doubt over whether her rehabilitation is genuine or an orchestrated attempt to secure parole. Rehabilitation is inherently a deeply personal process, difficult to evaluate objectively. It's especially challenging in high-profile cases like Van Houten's, where public opinion and the media often sway perception.   The concept of rehabilitation assumes an individual's potential for change, but public skepticism increases when dealing with high-profile violent crimes. For some, Van Houten's violent past is insurmountable, and her release sends a troubling message about accountability for serious crimes. For others, her case represents the power of rehabilitation and the potential for redemption.    At the heart of this debate is the broader question of what society wants from its criminal justice system: strict retribution or a chance for rehabilitation and eventual reintegration. These differing perspectives reflect fundamental tensions in our views about justice, punishment, and the human capacity for change.   In the case of Leslie Van Houten, only time will tell if her rehabilitation is genuine and whether she can navigate life outside of prison successfully. As we observe her journey, we are reminded of the complexity and challenges inherent in the rehabilitation process, particularly for those with a history as charged and violent as Van Houten's. Leslie Van Houten: Has Justice Been Served?

In an ill-conceived twist of judicial decisions that have left many cynical and aghast, Leslie Van Houten, former acolyte of the notorious Charles Manson, has been set free, leaving us questioning whether justice has truly been served.    Van Houten, convicted for her part in the notorious Manson family murders, has been paroled after almost half a century behind bars. This decision represents a dangerous precedent, a slap in the face to the memory of the victims, and a stark reminder of a justice system that can often seem more concerned with the welfare of the criminal than the pain and suffering of the victims and their families.    Van Houten, just a teenager when she participated in the brutal slayings of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in 1969, has reportedly been a "model prisoner." She earned two college degrees during her imprisonment and even chaired the prison's self-help programming. Admirable accomplishments, perhaps, if one can momentarily forget the bloody legacy she left outside the prison walls.    The parole board's decision to release Van Houten appears to be grounded in the belief that she has been rehabilitated. She apologized, expressed remorse, and evidently turned her life around. Yet, one cannot help but ask, does a transformed life in prison wipe the slate clean? Can any number of prison programs or degrees earned absolve someone of such gruesome crimes?    The board's decision has been met with a chilling reception, understandably so. It's as though the gruesome memories of the Manson family's reign of terror have been dismissed, relegated to mere footnotes of the past. It's a move that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth and a cold pit in the stomach, fueling a nagging sense of disquiet and disillusionment with the system.   Families of the victims are left with the raw, open wound of their loss, only further aggravated by Van Houten's release. They must grapple with their ongoing grief and the painful reality that the woman who played a role in the violent death of their loved ones now walks free. And what of the broader societal implications? The message this sends to victims of violent crime is chilling. It signals that even the most heinous criminals can walk free and that the horrors they've inflicted can be seemingly forgotten.    If Van Houten has truly changed and truly regrets her actions, then perhaps her freedom is her worst punishment. She will now have to live in a world that knows what she has done and will never forget or forgive. Yet, the fact remains: for the families of the LaBiancas and for those who still shudder at the memory of the Manson family's bloody rampage, this is not justice. This is a macabre parody of it.    In the end, the cynical echo of Van Houten's release underscores a disturbing reality: in our judicial system, it seems, even the most brutal crimes can be forgiven, the most horrifying pasts rehabilitated, and justice, it appears, can be a woefully malleable term. In a controversial and widely debated decision, Leslie Van Houten, a former follower of the infamous Charles Manson, has been granted parole after more than five decades behind bars. This decision has ignited discussions on the effectiveness and consequences of the justice system's treatment of individuals who have committed heinous acts. Among the voices rising in this crucial discourse is that of ex-FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit expert Robin Dreeke, whose analysis of the case brings a unique perspective to the unfolding narrative.    Van Houten, a participant in the horrifying Manson Family murders that rocked the nation, has been incarcerated for her crimes since the late 1960s. Her recent parole release has triggered a wave of concerns about the balance between rehabilitation and punishment in our penal system. Dreeke's viewpoint, stemming from years of experience in criminal behavioral analysis, presents an intriguing insight into these concerns.   With his extensive knowledge of criminal behavior, Dreeke could argue that the decision to parole Van Houten might set a concerning precedent, implying that even those involved in extreme acts of violence can eventually gain freedom. This perception could lead to public questioning of the judicial system's approach to severe crimes.   While the legal system does support the potential for rehabilitation, it is also crucial to consider the magnitude and heinous nature of the crimes committed. Van Houten's involvement in the brutal Manson Family murders is a chilling reminder of this balance. According to experts like Dreeke, the parole decision could inadvertently convey a message of leniency towards serious criminal acts, affecting future judicial proceedings.   Such viewpoints reflect a shared concern about the treatment of high-profile cases. The Manson Family murders represent a deeply distressing period in American history. To see Van Houten, one of the key players in these gruesome murders, walk free, can stir societal anxiety and debate about justice, punishment, and rehabilitation.   This debate's complexity highlights the need for ongoing discourse about how the justice system handles individuals convicted of severe crimes. Can they truly be rehabilitated? And if so, should they reintegrate into society? While these questions may not have definitive answers, they underline the intricate nature of criminal justice in cases such as Van Houten's.   The decision to parole Van Houten brings to light the broad consequences of such rulings on society's perception of justice. It reminds us that the echoes of past atrocities continue to resonate and that these decisions can shape our future justice system's trajectory.    With the release of Van Houten, we are reminded of the importance of maintaining a critical dialogue about our justice system's decisions. As we grapple with the complexities of such cases, perspectives like those of Dreeke remain critical in ensuring we continue to evaluate and question the decisions that shape our societal perception of justice. In a shocking twist that has left victims' families aghast, Leslie Van Houten, a former member of the infamous Manson Family, has been released from prison. Van Houten, who was convicted for her role in the notorious Manson Family murders that rocked the nation in 1969, was granted parole recently after serving more than five decades behind bars.    Van Houten, once a homecoming princess, was just 19 years old when she became embroiled in the brutal killings masterminded by Charles Manson. The slayings, known as the LaBianca Murders, marked a dark chapter in American history, sending shockwaves of horror and disbelief throughout the country.    Van Houten's release has drawn sharp criticism, particularly from the families of the victims, who had to relive the nightmarish ordeal each time her parole was considered. They have expressed their profound disappointment and fear at the decision to release someone involved in such horrific crimes.    Van Houten was the youngest member of the Manson cult and participated in the murder of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, a day after other Manson followers murdered Sharon Tate, who was eight months pregnant, and four others. Van Houten was convicted of stabbing Rosemary LaBianca over a dozen times after she was already dead.    The decision to grant parole to Van Houten has also been met with a flurry of criticism from the law enforcement community and the public. Critics argue that the magnitude of the crimes committed by the Manson Family, and Van Houten's participation in them, should outweigh any efforts she made to rehabilitate herself in prison.    Despite her good conduct in prison, earning bachelor's and master's degrees, and her work in prison programs, many argue that the severity of her crimes cannot be overlooked. As one critic noted, "Her actions, driven by a malevolent ideology, resulted in the senseless and brutal death of innocent people. This cannot be undone by good behavior in prison."    As the news of Van Houten's release reverberates, the memory of the Manson Family murders returns to the public consciousness, reigniting the debate about justice, rehabilitation, and the possibility of redemption. The horrifying nature of the Manson Family crimes remains etched in the nation's memory, underscoring the pain and trauma endured by the victims' families. Their voices echo the chilling reminder that justice for such monstrous acts should never be diluted by the passage of time. Want to listen to ALL our Podcasts AD-FREE? The Cold Hard Truth About White Collar Crime: With Kelly Richmond Pope

This week, helping us get Set For Sentencing is Dr. Kelly Richmond Pope.  She's a fraud expert, a filmmaker, and an accounting professor at DePaul University in Chicago.  Her latest book, “Fool Me Once: Scams Stories and secrets from the Trillion Dollar Fraud Industry," is burning up the charts nationally.  Why do people commit fraud?  What is the appropriate punishment? What is the public perception underlying and animating all of it?  This was a lively discussion that really struck at the heart of the goals of punishment and the truth about how justice is "served" in America. The discussion touches on many topics, but at the center of it all is one of the largest municipal fraud cases ever, that of Rita Crundwell, the subject of Dr. Pope's incredible documentary, "All the Queen's Horses."   Ms. Crundwell, was the comptroller of a small city in Illinois when she embezzled millions from the town coffers.  When Ms. Crundwell received early “compassionate” release from the federal Bureau of Prisons, her victims and those following the case were outraged.  They believed that because she only ended up serving 8.5 years of her 20 year sentence that a grave injustice occurred.   This episode, quite unintentionally drops amidst a wave of publicity about two other very high profile offenders.  The first is Elizabeth Holmes.  It seems the media somehow figured out for the first time, that Ms. Holmes, like EVERY OTHER FEDERAL DEFENDANT EVER, will not have to serve her full sentence.  She will literally earn YEARS off her sentence for good behavior and participating in programming.  This too seems to outrage those who might otherwise have a surface level view of the many complicated layers of federal sentencing. Virtually the same day all the Elizabeth Holmes faux outrage click-bait machine revved up, we heard the news about Leslie Van Houton's parole.   She was responsible, among others, for the brutal murders of Rosemary and Leo LaBianca in 1969.  She was a 19-year-old runaway at the time, and under the influence of career criminal, psychopath, cult leader Charles Manson.  She was sentenced to life in prison, but was paroled after serving fifty-three years.  Now, compare the crimes of Van Houten (53 years for 2 heinous murders) and Holmes (11.5 years for hundreds of millions of dollars) with Crundwell (over 20 years for 50 million).  Does that put Crundwell's record-setting sentence in any better perspective?  Do we feel any better about the fact that she "only" served 8.5 years in federal prison? IN THIS EPISODE: The importance of storytelling to achieve empathy; The “3 forces of fraud” – Opportunity, Pressure, and Rationalization; Unpacking the Rationalization component of the fraud triangle; The “three categories” of fraud offenders:  Intentional, accidental, and righteous; Dr. Pope's take on Elizabeth Holmes as “righteous perpetrator”; Dr. Pope's take on Edward Snowden as “righteous perpetrator”; The role of race and gender in sentencing; The goals of punishment and whether justice was served in Rita Crundwell's case. Why Did We Just Release Convicted Manson Murder Conspirator Leslie Van Houten?

In a decision sparking heated debate across the nation, former Charles Manson follower and convicted murder conspirator, Leslie Van Houten, was recently granted parole, marking her fourth recommendation for release since 2016. The recommendation, made by a California parole panel, brings into focus the dichotomy between punishment and rehabilitation, raising the question: why was Van Houten released?    Van Houten, now 73, was just 19 when she joined Manson's cult, "The Family," and participated in the brutal murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in 1969. In what became one of the most infamous criminal cases in American history, she was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. While her crimes were horrifying, her recent release hinged on a significant factor: her behavior and growth in prison.    During her over five decades of incarceration, Van Houten has been described by prison officials as a model inmate. She earned college degrees, participated in self-help programs, and even counseled fellow inmates. Supporters argue that her transformation and remorse demonstrate the potential for rehabilitation, even in the most dire circumstances. The parole board's decision, however, isn't merely an endorsement of her personal transformation; it also underscores a wider shift in the criminal justice system, gradually steering away from the draconian 'tough on crime' approach and recognizing the potential for reform.    Nevertheless, the decision has met with considerable backlash, mainly from the victims' families and members of the public who believe that Van Houten's involvement in the brutal Manson murders should preclude her from ever walking free. They argue that some crimes are so heinous, the toll on victims so heavy, that releasing the perpetrator undermines the very notion of justice. The dichotomy between these contrasting viewpoints raises difficult questions about the purpose of incarceration, balancing societal safety, justice for victims, and the potential for individual redemption. In an unprecedented move that has sparked widespread debate, former Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten has been released from prison. Van Houten, who played a significant role in the notorious Manson family murders, is now free, raising profound questions about societal consequences and potential implications for the American criminal justice system. This shocking decision has thrust the issue of reintegrating convicted murderers into society into the limelight, reigniting discussions on crime, punishment, rehabilitation, and societal safety.    Leslie Van Houten, once a key member of the infamous Manson family, was convicted for her role in the gruesome LaBianca murders that rocked the nation in the late 1960s. Her release after over five decades behind bars has caused a significant stir, not only among the surviving families of her victims but across society at large. The impact of this decision reverberates through various societal strata, from public safety concerns to the broader question of whether our penal system effectively rehabilitates violent offenders.    From a public safety perspective, the release of a convicted murderer poses potential risks. The community may fear the presence of an individual associated with such heinous crimes, fostering unease and insecurity. The Manson murders were some of the most chilling in American history. Van Houten's freedom can serve as a distressing reminder of these horrific events, particularly for those who lived through that tumultuous time.    Moreover, Van Houten's release raises important questions about the efficacy of the criminal justice system in rehabilitating violent offenders. While the justice system's goal is to reform convicts and prepare them for reintegration into society, public opinion often questions whether individuals who committed atrocious crimes can genuinely be reformed.    On the other hand, advocates of prison reform argue that even those convicted of the most severe crimes should have the opportunity for redemption. They posit that decades spent behind bars, coupled with rehabilitation efforts, can bring about a transformation, even in those who once followed the dark path of someone like Charles Manson.    Van Houten's release may also influence the debate surrounding parole for elderly prisoners. At 72, Van Houten's age and her time spent in prison could be factors that weighed in favor of her parole. With a rapidly aging prison population, this case might set a precedent, leading to more paroles being granted to elderly inmates who have served long sentences.    The societal impact of releasing convicted murderers like Leslie Van Houten back into society is vast and multifaceted. It forces us to grapple with uncomfortable questions about crime, punishment, and redemption. As a society, we must consider whether individuals who have committed horrendous crimes can change and whether they should have the chance to reintegrate into society after serving their sentences.    This moment in criminal justice history serves as a catalyst for discussions on the future direction of our justice system. The dialogue it prompts may lead to significant changes in policies and perceptions surrounding crime, punishment, and rehabilitation. Regardless of individual opinions on the Van Houten release, the societal impact of this decision is undeniable and will likely continue to resonate in the years to come. On this day in history, in 1991, Boris Yelstin was elected Russia's first popularly elected president. Boris Yeltsin, a Soviet and Russian politician, served as the first president of Russia from 1991 to 1999. Initially a member of the Communist Party, he later distanced himself from the party and aligned himself with liberalism and Russian nationalism. Yeltsin was born in Butka, Ural Oblast, and after studying at the Ural State Technical University, he worked in the construction industry. Rising through the ranks of the Communist Party, he became known as an anti-establishment figure when he resigned from the Politburo in 1987. In 1990, he was elected chair of the Russian Supreme Soviet and then as president of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) in 1991.Yeltsin played a crucial role in the dissolution of the Soviet Union, leading to the establishment of the independent Russian Federation. During his presidency, Yeltsin pursued economic reforms that shifted Russia from a command economy to a market economy. This included implementing shock therapy, introducing a market exchange rate for the ruble, privatizing state-owned enterprises, and lifting price controls. Yeltsin was reelected in the controversial 1996 election, which was criticized for widespread corruption. While his presidency was marked by significant political and economic changes, it also faced challenges and criticism for its handling of reforms and corruption allegations.A white postal employee who sued the US Postal Service for race bias has lost the case. James Halbauer claimed that he was treated unfairly for wearing a MAGA hat while his fellow co-worker faced no consequences for wearing a Black Lives Matter hat. The court ruled that the Hatch Act, which restricts political activity for civil-service employees, played a role in the decision. The judge stated that the other employee's hat was not campaign-related but associated with a social movement, whereas Halbauer's MAGA hat violated the Hatch Act. Other claims of unequal treatment regarding dress code violations were also dismissed, as Halbauer failed to provide statistical proof or demonstrate suspicious background circumstances required for a reverse discrimination case. The court concluded that Halbauer didn't exhaust pre-suit remedies and didn't raise race discrimination in his internal EEO complaint.MAGA-Hat-Wearing White Postal Employee Loses Race Bias LawsuitLaw firm Greenberg Traurig and other major firms are shifting their focus to the growing private credit market as traditional M&A opportunities dwindle. Private debt has increased from around $300 billion in 2010 to approximately $1.5 trillion globally as of September 2022, with projections estimating it to reach $2.2 trillion by 2027. Private credit deals are gaining popularity as an alternative to traditional lending, given bank failures and stricter standards. Greenberg Traurig has been hiring lawyers specializing in private credit across multiple locations, recognizing the potential in this area. The firm attributes its long-term success to its early focus on private equity work, and it aims to follow the trajectory of the market by investing in private credit expertise. For the uninitiated private credit is a type of investment that involves lending money to private companies – that is, those that are not listed on stock exchanges. This asset class has been gaining popularity in recent years, as fewer companies have gone public and the number of private firms looking for capital has grown. Private credit can offer investors higher returns than traditional investments, but there are also some risks involved. In brief, these include transparency (you may not know what you are investing in) and illiquidity (you may have difficulty finding someone to buy shares you want to unload). Greenberg Traurig Eyes $2.2 Trillion Private Credit MarketThe IRS is changing its approach to target potentially abusive transactions by issuing proposed rules to identify them as listed transactions. This shift comes after court opinions ruled that the agency must follow the formal regulatory process with notice and a comment period. The proposed rules aim to address syndicated conservation easements, micro-captive insurance transactions, and transactions involving Maltese retirement plans. The Biden administration's unified agenda also includes proposed rules on charitable remainder annuity trusts and monetized installment sales. Listing transactions as suspect subjects them to additional reporting requirements, with penalties for non-compliance. The change in approach provides more transparency and ensures that court rulings do not hinder the agency's efforts to combat abusive transactions. The IRS is expected to continue targeting transactions involving promoters and heavy marketing in its enforcement efforts.IRS Shifts Tactics on ‘Dirty Dozen' Suspected Tax DodgesSVB Financial Group has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC) in an attempt to recover $1.93 billion that was seized during the FDIC's takeover of failed Silicon Valley Bank in March. SVB Financial argues that the lack of access to these funds is hindering its reorganization efforts, and the money should be generating over $100 million in annual interest. The FDIC has stated that it can legally hold the seized funds while determining SVB Financial's share of the rescue costs, which the FDIC estimates to be around $16 billion. SVB Financial claims that the FDIC has not provided any specific claims to justify its refusal to pay despite having multiple opportunities to do so. A California appeals court has ruled that Leslie Van Houten, a former member of the Charles Manson cult who participated in two murders in 1969, should be released on parole. This ruling overrules previous decisions by Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Gov. Jerry Brown, who denied Van Houten's parole due to their belief she still poses a danger to society. However, the judges of the appellate court argue that Van Houten has shown considerable rehabilitation and remorse over the years. The final decision on Van Houten's release might still be reviewed by the state Supreme Court, following a request by California's Attorney General. Want to listen to ALL our Podcasts Ad-Free? A California appeals court said Tuesday that Leslie Van Houten, who participated in two killings at the direction of cult leader Charles Manson in 1969, should be let out of prison on parole. The appellate court's ruling reverses an earlier decision by Gov. Gavin Newsom, who rejected parole for Van Houten in 2020. She has been recommended for parole five times since 2016. All of those recommendations were rejected by either Newsom or former California Gov. Jerry Brown. State Farm General Insurance Co. last week became the latest insurer to retreat from California's homeowners market. The culprit isn't climate change, as the media claims in parroting Sacramento talking points. The cause is the Golden State's hostile insurance environment. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
