I don't think he really spoiled anything big in Starfield, but if you really care about having every aspect of that game UNSULLIED for your laborious playthrough, we stop spoiling things at 38:20. Daenerys has taken Meereen, but Astapor and Yunkai are backsliding. She forgives Barristan Selmy for his failures to protect her family, but banishes Jorah Mormont from her sight. She'll stay in Meereen and rule. Mackelly and Simon settle in to watch some dragons grow.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen surveys Meereen from the great pyramid. She's bothered by flies who've gathered to feast on the many dead, including the 163 she crucified as payment for what they did to the slave children. She meets an envoy from Astapor. The council she appointed have all lost their heads, literally, and a former (and apparently current) butcher Cleon, has made himself King. He offers his hand in marriage. Dany is distinctly disinterested. The second petitioner is a Qartheen trader. He has goods he wants to trade for slaves. He's surely barking up the wrong tree. Only Daario Naharis confirms that many freed slaves are down at the docks offering to reenter slavery. Dany begrudgingly allows it and imposes a tax on the trade to swell her own coffers.Next she sees Ser Barristan Selmy and Ser Jorah Mormont. The former gives it to her straight. Her father was mad, Viserys had the hallmarks too. Robert Baratheon was a great knight, and could have been a good king. She appreciates the candor and reinstates him to her service. Mormont tries a similar tack. He spied for Varys for a pardon, as recently as Qarth. But this is too much for Dany. She banishes Jorah forever.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. She makes a possible new friend, berates an old one, and gets a history lesson about her brother Rhaegar. Simon and Mackelly ponder buyer's remorse with sellsword armies.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen surveys the host awaiting her own outside the gates of Yunkai. She asks Ser Jorah Mormont to invite the leaders of the three factions of the force to meet her in her tent, spreading out the meeting times so she can meet with each group separately. She offers the sellsword company the Stormcrows an alliance, wanting an answer the next day. She offers the leader of the sellsword company the Second Sons a wagon of wine to consider joining her side, again wanting an answer the next day. Finally, she offers the Yunkai envoy three days to send out every slave in the city loaded down with goods and gold. If they do as asked, they and their city will be spared. When the men have left, she tells her council that they'll attack an hour after midnight, while the enemy are distracted by her offers.Later that night, Daario Naharis one of the leaders of the Stormcrows is found in camp. He tells Dany the Stormcrows are hers, as is he. Jorah is uncertain of the man's intentions. Dany disregards Ser Jorah and sends Daario back to prepare his men to turn their cloaks when the battle begins. She then lashes out at Jorah for pushing all other men away. She loves and respects him, but does not desire him.As the battle begins, Dany and Arstan Whitebeard pass the time discussing her brother Rhaegar. Their conversation is cut off by the news of their victory against the Yunkish force. The Stormcrows fought on Dany's side, as Daario promised. Three days later, the slaves of Yunkai are freed. Daenerys buys the Unsullied army that she needs but pays a huge cost. Not only the three ships and all their contents, but also her dragon Drogon. However, she has a nasty surprise in store for the slavers. Simon and Mackelly consider the economic crimes that pave Daenerys' path to the Iron Throne.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen is willing to pay any price to get her Unsullied slave army. Ultimately, she and the masters of Astapor agree upon the sum: the three ships she sailed into Slaver's Bay on, all of their contents, and… Drogon. Arstan Whitebeard pleads with Dany not to agree to that last bit, but she has him removed from her presence. In return, Dany gets all 8,600 fully-trained Unsullied, along with the partially trained, the recently-cut boys, and the translator slave named Missandei. That night, on board her ship Balerion, she has a vision of Quaithe repeating the riddle she told Dany in Qarth. The next morning she rides to the meeting place among her meager force, including all three dragons. She hands the chain attached to Drogon's neck to Kraznys mo Nakloz and receives the ceremonial whip indicating she now has control over the Unsullied. While Kraznys and the other masters struggle controlling Drogon, Dany rides past the Unsullied shouting to them in High Valyrian that she now owns them and they'll do as she says. She turns back to Drogon and shouts "Dracarys." The dragon bathes Krasnys in flame. The other two dragons are released and all three begin pouring fire down on the Astapori elite in attendance. She commands the Unsullied to kill anyone wearing a tokar, free all slaves, but leave any children unharmed. She then tells the Unsullied soldiers that they are now free.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Viserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon - Daenerys' dragons.Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. Daenerys lays her eyes upon the Unsullied slave army with mixed emotion. She then takes her frustrations of the day out on Ser Jorah. She confronts Irri about a late-night tryst between the two women. Finally, she asks Jorah if buying the slave army is more of a Rhaegar or Viserys move. Simon and Mackelly hug their dogs.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen has made it to Astapor in Slaver's Bay. She meets with slave master Kraznys mo Nakloz to see his Unsullied eunuch slave soldiers. Dany and Arstan Whitebeard are aghast at the terrible training process the Unsullied must endure. She decides to think on whether she wants to purchase the slaves to create an army for herself. On her way back to the ships, Dany thinks of Jorah's kiss and how inappropriate it was. However, as much as she found it unwanted, the kiss has stirred something within her she thought died with Drogo. When she and Arstan arrive at the ships, she lashes out at Jorah, punctuating her feelings with a slap across his face.Later that evening, she confides to Jorah that the act of buying a slave army doesn't feel in-line with what her brother Rhaegar would've done. Rhaegar had free men fighting for him. Jorah confirms that Rhaegar did have free, noble, and brave men. However, it all amounted to nothing, as Rhaegar lost the war and the Iron Throne. We're already halfway through Season 7, as we approach one of the best episodes that occured in the latest part of the show's run, Season 7, Episode 3, "The Queen's Justice." This was a monumental episode for several different reasons, the most notable one being that this episode finally saw the long awaited first meeting between Jon Snow & Daenerys Targaryen, with Jon arriving at Dragonstone to treat with Daenerys and attempt to explain to her the threat from the dead, only to discover that Daenerys is hell bent on conquering all of the seven kingdoms, including bringing the North back into the fold. This episode also contains Cersei Lannister's most gangster moment since blowing up the Sept of Baelor, with Euron presenting the Sand Snakes to her as his gift to her, and Cersei getting to exact her long awaited revenge on Ellaria for Myrcella's murder in a scene that is equal parts jaw dropping as it is horrifying. The episode is just filled from top to bottom with incredible moments, characters reuniting and more. Bran finally arrives home in Winterfell and reunites with Sansa, only to shake her with his newfound powers. Jorah is cured of Greyscale and bids goodbye to Sam, who's both rewarded and punished for it. Tyrion enacts his plan to have the Unsullied seize Casterly Rock, only for them to be waylayed and trapped inland as Jaime has taken the full force of the Lannister army to Highgarden, taking out yet another one of Daenerys' allies, but not before Olenna gives him one last revelation before she departs from the world and the show. It's yet another high stakes episode as we inch even closer to the battle for the throne. Daenerys is sailing the Summer Sea watching her dragons grow. She receives ambiguous reports of the kind of men her father and eldest brother were, advice from Ser Jorah as to her next move, and possibly unwanted advances from Mormont. Simon and Mackelly weigh up the suitors and their suits.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen watches her dragons play above the three ships that bear her west towards Pentos, slowly. The dragons are growing, but remain more of a liability than an asset. In her honor, the three ships have been renamed for dragons of Aegon the Conqueror and his sister wives: Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar.Arstan Whitebeard provides some dragon-lore from his time in King's Landing where he knew both her father and her brother Rhaegar. He treads carefully, but it's not hard to see his true feelings about King Aerys. And unlike most people, he has a nuanced view of Rhaegar. “Able above all else” is not the most ringing endorsement.Ser Jorah warns her to beware of Arstan - something's not right about him. But Dany has too few friends to doubt those who've saved her life. Ser Jorah proposes a plan to both test Illyrio Mopatis' loyalty to Dany, and to ensure it. They'll redirect for Astapor, sell all Mopatis' goods on the ships, and use that money to buy an army of Unsullied - the finest warriors in Essos - with whom they'll march to Pentos.Dany likes the plan and Ser Jorah celebrates by kissing her unbidden. A tense moment ensues.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Viserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon - Daenerys' dragons. The size of small dogs.Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. Daenerys' Lord Commander of her Queensguard and loyal advisor.Illyrio Mopatis - Wealthy merchant of Pentos who cared for the young Daenerys and her brother Viserys.Strong Belwas - Fighter sent by Mopatis to bring Daenerys safely to Pentos.Arstan Whitebeard - Westerosi squire to Strong Belwas. Seems to know a lot about King's Landing and the Targaryens.Pentos - City on the west coast of Essos.Summer Sea - Sea to the south of Essos.Unsullied - Eunuch slave soldiers. We've reached the point of no return with this week's episode, Season 5, Episode 4 entitled "Sons of the Harpy." This is the episode where a lot of stupid stuff happens with little to no return, because unlike last week's episode where the story was actually pretty engaging despite the lack of payoff, here we're provided with stupid moment after stupid moment with little in-between to tie it all together. It's the real beginning to me of Benioff & Weiss' downfall with their critical reception, because this is the first of a series of episodes that are just poorly written with very little to actually excuse or justify it. Cersei enacts the plan to take over the city by restoring the Faith Militant, completely confusing poor Tommen & us the audience who are baffled by Cersei's lack of foresight as to the Sparrow's future actions. Melisandre attempts to seduce Jon with poor results, Tyrion realizes Jorah kidnapped him for nothing since they're both going to the same place, Jaime & Bronn arrive in Dorne, we're introduced to the Sand Snakes and Sansa says goodbye to Littlefinger, who conveniently tells her that Stannis is marching on Winterfell. We also get the next worst action sequence with the Sons of the Harpy's ambush of Grey Worm's troupe of Unsullied, wherein they proceed to kill everyone of them but Grey Worm, who has now inherited Ramsay Bolton's plot armor from last season. It unfortunately doesn't extend to Ser Barristan though, who meets his tragic end this episode attempting to help Grey Worm and his soldiers, a death that was so stupid even the actor who played Ser Barristan, Ian McElhinney, voiced his complaints with how he thought the character's death was poorly thought out. On the next episode of Talkin' Thrones, we hit the halfway point of Season 3, with one of the best episodes of the show and Dom's favorite episode up to this point, Episode 5 of Season 3, entitled "Kissed by Fire." The second episode directed by Alex Graves and the 3rd episode of 11 written by series mainstay Brian Cogman, this is an episode filled from top to bottom with amazing character and action moments. Arya witnesses The Hound face Beric Dondarrion in a trial by fire, and is surprised when he is returned to life after the Hound initially kills him. North of the Wall, Jon's vows are put to the test when Ygritte makes a move on him. Jaime & Brienne are brought to Harrenhal, where Jaime finally reveals why he killed the Mad King. On the next episode of Talkin' Thrones, Professor Pat & Dom "The Movie Nerd" examine the fourth episode of Season 3 of this hit show, entitled "And Now His Watch is Ended." Directed by Alex Graves and written by David Benioff & DB Weiss, this episode is a peculiar beast, because it has some very iconic and amazingly well done sequences, in contrast to the vast majority of the plot being very minimalistic and slow paced. The phrase itself is in reference to whenever a brother of the Night's Watch dies. North of the Wall, the tension finally reaches the breaking point with the starving brothers murdering Craster and Lord Commander Mormont, forcing Sam & Gilly to go on the run. Arya meets Beric Dondarrion, the leader of the Brotherhood without banners, who challenges the Hound to trial by combat. Theon finds himself right back where he started, while Bran continues to dream. Jaime ruminates about what life is like without his greatest assett. Daenerys achieves her first true victory as a conqueror by murdering the slavemasters and gaining the ultimate alliance of the Unsullied. In King's Landing, more meddling is afoot as Varys makes his move against Littlefinger, while Margaery proposes marriage ideas to Sansa. It's an interesting episode, but another memorable one. On tonight's episode of Talkin' Thrones, it's the continuation of Season 3 with the next part of the set up of the season with Season 3, Episode 3, Walk of Punishment! One of only three episodes directed by the series creators, this one by David Benioff, this episode starts to see all the storylines established in the first half of this season coalesce. First there's Robb, who's moved his forces to Riverrun for the funeral of his grandfather, Hoster Tully's funeral, where we're introduced to his badass great uncle Brynden "Blackfish" Tully & his incompetant uncle, Edmure Tully, both characters that seemed poised to have a big role in the show, and then promptly disappeared post the Red Wedding until they needed to wrap the storyline up in Season 6. Elsewhere in the Riverlands, Arya says goodbye to Hot Pie as her, Gendry & the Hound are now all prisoners of the Brotherhood without Banners, while Jaime attempts to barter for Brienne's innocence, but learns what over-reliance on his father's name will get him as his journey truly begins with the loss of his hand. In the North, Theon is led on a cat and mouse goose chase by his captors, all apart of Ramsay Bolton's larger game. On Dragonstone, Melisandre departs for parts unknown. North of the Wall, Mance learns of the attack on the Night's Watch, and orders Jon to attack his former brothers, while Sam and company arrive back at Craster's, with things looking grim all around. In King's Landing, Tyrion is made Master of Coin in Littlefinger's place, while Podrick Payne gets some much deserved R&R with the ladies. In this week's episode, Dany's chapter takes this series to a whole other level. Raven sobs at the awesomeness of purchasing the Unsullied, we question Jake on his reaction when he first read the book to the deal Dany makes, and we break down the differences between this chapter and the scene in the show. A mysterious character makes a reappearance and we try to solve their riddle. Sansa's chapter also takes a turn when she is forced to marry a Lannister. We are saddened by her chapter and deeply disturbed by the duties of a medieval 12-year old girl. Jess talks about her recent experience getting black-out drunk and we give an update on what's new on our Patreon. Character perspectives in this episode: Daenerys and Sansa... Dr. Enric Sala was a lauded professor until he quit his job because, in his words, "I was doing was writing the obituary of ocean life." Thus began his journey in ocean conservation which would lead him to found the Pristine Seas project and become National Geographic's Explorer-in-Residence. In this episode of Who's Saving the Planet we discuss Dr. Sala's transition from the halls of academia to the (maritime) trenches of activism, his ongoing fight to preserve the aquatic wilderness, and how humans have disrupted the interconnected harmony of nature. The Pristine Seas project began in 2008 as an idea: what if we could protect 1/3 of the ocean from exploitation, commercial fishing, pollution and, really humans? Unsullied, wild parts of the ocean are fast becoming extinct, but all the more important to protect because "these unique ecosystems are a window into the past, revealing what the ocean looked like before overfishing and pollution took their toll. It is essential that we let the world know that these places exist, that they are threatened, and that help is needed to protect them." In what he describes as his "loveletter to the planet," Dr. Sala has encapsulated the lessons he's learned (and taught) about human's relationship with the natural world in his forthcoming book, The Nature of Nature. The hardcover comes out August 25, and we'd encourage you to look for it at your local bookstore!

“ I assume you’re here to bend the knee?” Daenerys asks Jon Snow expectantly. Jon Snow replies “I am not.” Season 7 conclusion begins in suspense as Jon Snow and Ser Davos arrive at Dragonstone to meet with Daenerys Targaryen. Upon their arrival, Varys and Melisandre have a conversation about each other’s future in Westeros. “Oh I will return dear spider. One last time. I have to die in this strange country just like you.” Melisandre tells Varys knowingly. Jon and Daenerys converse for the first time and Jon tells her and Tyrion about the army of the dead. They argue and trade facts about history and loyalties with neither backing down. “So many men have tried to kill me, I don't remember all their names. I have been sold like a broodmare. I've been chained and betrayed, raped and defiled. Do you know what kept me standing through all those years in exile? Faith. Not in any gods. Not in myths and legends. In myself. In Daenerys Targaryen.” Daenerys boasts to Jon. Varys interrupts this interaction with grave news about the Greyjoys and the Sand Snakes. At King’s Landing Euron Greyjoy brings Cersei the priceless gift he promised. Euron and Jaime have a less than friendly interaction while Cersei gets her revenge for Myrcella’s death. Cersei meets with Tycho Nestoris from the Iron Bank of Bravos and they discuss the Lannister. Back at Dragonstone Tyrion and Jon talk of the White Walkers with Jon asking Tyrion if he believes him. “I trust the eyes of an honest man more than I trust what everyone knows.” Tyrion says in response. Jon asks Daenerys to allow him to mine the dragonglass. While in Winterfell, Sansa is growing into her own and making executive decisions as the Lady of Winterfell. Meera brings Bran to Winterfell and Sansa and Bran see each other for the first time since Season 1. Bran tries to describe to Sansa the role of the Three-Eyed Raven in unsettling fashion. In the Citadel, Jorah Mormont has been cured of Grayscale and is ready to return to his Queen. Meanwhile, the Unsullied take Casterly Rock only to find out they were tricked. High Garden falls to Jaime and the Lannister army, Olenna drinks the poison and gives Jaime a confession. Jaime leads his army back to King’s Landing with all of High Gardens’s gold and harvest crops. Meanwhile, Cersei gets an interesting proposition from Tycho. In Winterfell, Petyr Baelish approaches Bran where he finds that even with all of his wits, he can’t fool someone who literally knows everything. Arya arrives in Winterfell for the first time since Season 1 and reunites with her sister and brother, and Bran gives Arya an important gift. Back at Dragonstone, Jon shows Daenerys the dragonglass and some interesting hieroglyphics that provide evidence to the existence of the Night King. Daenerys learns of latest failure at Casterly Rock and is ready to burn it all down. Before she makes a decision, she asks Jon his advice to which he tells her “If you use them to melt castles and burn cities, you’re not different. You’re just more of the same.” In Winterfell, Arya and Brienne have an epic spar while at Dragonstone, and Jon and Theon see each other for the first time since Jon left for the Night’s Watch. Randyll Tarly informs Jaime and Bronn that all of the gold is safely secured in King’s Landing, but that relief is short lived as Daenerys arrives to show them who the real Queen is. Upon her return to Dragonstone, an old knight pledges himself to her once more, and Tyrion devises a plan to make Cersei believe in the threat to the North. In Winterfell, Sansa is tempted by The Northern houses. Tyrion meets with Jaime to convince him to have Cersei agree to armistice, and Ser Davos collects an old friend from Flea Bottom. In the Citadel, Gilly comes across perhaps the most important discovery in Maester Maynards’ records, while Arya in Winterfell makes a shocking discovery of her own. At The Wall, the A-Team of Westeros go beyond to bring back a wight. After dangerous encounters with creatures of the dead, Jon and company catch a wight only to be surrounded by the Night King and his army. Is this the end for them? Or will someone come to save the day? If they do survive, will Cersei have a change of heart when presented the proof or was it all for naught? The Night King adds the most dangerous ally to his army, while in Winterfell, the Stark sisters rid themselves of a dangerous ally of their own. Bran and Sam together fit the final pieces together about Jon’s true lineage, while two relatives are rocking the boat. Meanwhile unbeknownst to anyone except the men holding The Wall at Eastwatch By The Sea, Winter is officially coming to Westeros. Take a dive with the Riddikulus Crew into the conclusion of Season 7 in our 3 and ½ hour special as things begin to come full circle, while other questions are raised. Where does Jon Snow go from here? In the words of Bran Stark “He’s never been a bastard, he’s the heir to the Iron Throne.”

However, given that you cover film news, spoilers come with the territory of the job so I do understand how you might have developed into that position.  I feel that there were 2 topics discussed and should be treated separately from each other.  1: The film is no good if you know key elements of it going in.  I agree with both you and HT that the quality of the film doesn't change. A well crafted film is what it is. Spoilers do not change that.   However...  Keeping a lid on spoilers is about preserving the experience, which lead to:   2: Knowing a death or twist is coming doesn't matter. Disagree with this completely. Knowing major elements going into a film changes how you view the movie. The context changes. Watching The Sixth Sense a second time after you know the twist, is a totally different experience. Rather than watching things unfold, you're instead watching for clues/interactions as to how the twist works or is justified. Circling back to preserving the experience...  Magic. I know you are a huge fan of magic and practice it.  How would you feel if the veil of secrecy around every single magic trick that exists was lifted?  Would it still be magic if the whole audience knew what was coming or how it was done? Sure, if done well, it's still a great trick as with a great film. When the viewer knows what's coming though, the wonder and magic are just less special.   Would love to hear your thoughts on this, whether by podcast response or reply email.”   To submit questions to the mailbag, send them to peter@slashfilm.com.
