Bhuwan Pyakurel, a former refugee from Bhutan, resettled in the United States in 2009. He and his family moved to Ohio in 2014 and he became a U.S. citizen in 2015. They bought their first home in Reynoldsburg and immediately became involved in the community. Bhuwan and his wife, Dil, have been married for 14 years and they have two children, Aditi and Dev, both who attend Reynoldsburg Public Schools. Aditi loves reading and volunteers her time to raise funds to protect the environment. Dev loves sports and plays basketball and soccer, and enjoys skateboarding, karate, chess, and solving the Rubik's Cube. As a community leader, Bhuwan has worked with the Reynoldsburg Police Department and residents ever since he moved to the city. He believes education is the most important tool to bridge the gap and build trust between those in public safety and the community. Since 2015, Bhuwan has been a manager of interpretive services for Primary One Health, which operates 10 clinics in Central Ohio, and he also serves on the Board of the new Reynoldsburg YMCA. He has also served as President of the Bhutanese Community of Central Ohio (BCCO). For Ward 3 residents and all of Reynoldsburg, Bhuwan's plans include: helping keep Reynoldsburg residents safer by fixing sidewalks, roads and infrastructure and improving lighting, increasing the number of code enforcement officers in the City, boosting communications and transparency between City Council and citizens by using modern technologies, and making City government work better for the people of Reynoldsburg by holding regular town hall forums with constituents. Bhuwan, who has a Bachelor of Science degree from North Bengal University in India, and the City of Reynoldsburg made history in November 2019 when he became the first Bhutanese American to be elected to public office in the United States. After he and 120,000 fellow Bhutanese-Nepali's were forcibly pushed out of Bhutan and their civil, human and political rights stripped away, Bhuwan says he will “always be grateful to this nation for giving me a second chance to live my life and enjoy these freedoms in the greatest country in the world.” Bhuwan deeply values his American citizenship and its inalienable protected rights, and he now works to “pay it forward” and create new opportunities for the people of Reynoldsburg.

Next November, Columbus voters may be asked to approve a 0.5% sales tax increase to generate $6 billion of the estimated $8 billion cost the massive long-term transit improvement project known as LinkUS. LinkUS promises to better connect parts of Columbus though significant transit improvements that include new bus rapid transit (BRT) lines and infrastructure improvements for pedestrians that include new trails and sidewalks. BRT is a mass transit alternative that can deliver some of the amenities associated with light rail – dedicated lanes, easy boarding at stations, fast and frequent service – without the higher cost and longer construction time of rail projects. Three new LinkUS transit corridors are now on the horizon – a West Broad Corridor from Prairie Township to Downtown Columbus, an East Main Corridor from Downtown to past Reynoldsburg close to Etna, and a Northwest Corridor from downtown Columbus along Highway 315 to Bethel Road on a route that includes The Ohio State University and major employers. If voters approve, work would begin on the West Broad Corridor as early as 2025, and it could be operational as soon as 2028. Will Columbus voters see the value of investing in these corridors to finally give Columbus commuters new mobility options that could serve as models for the entire region? Featuring introductory remarks by Andrew J. Ginther, Mayor, City of Columbus With panelists: Shannon Hardin, President, Columbus City Council William Murdock, Executive Director, Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission Stevie Pasamonte, Chair, Transit Columbus Monica Tellez-Fowler, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, COTA The host is Curtis Jackson, Evening Anchor, Spectrum News 1 The sponsors of this forum were COTA, The Robert Weiler Company, and HNTB. Before 1870, the tomato was a wild plant that most found hard, ugly and inedible. Most homes that had a plant just kept it as an ornamental curiosity. But after 15 years of work, A. W. This week on the pod, we're commemorating Juneteenth. After catching up on news, Amanda Weinstein, Jasmine Clark, and Rachel Vindman talk about what Juneteenth is, why we celebrate it, and what conversations and events they've been a part of in their communities this week. With the right-wing outrage over Critical Race Theory and teaching accurate history in classrooms, it's more important than ever to remember our past… the good, the bad, and the ugly. The hosts are then joined by Meredith Lawson-Rowe, a suburban mom in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. After winning her race for city council, Meredith has been organizing Juneteenth celebrations in her town. Then Jasmine interviews Jo Banner, who founded a nonprofit along with her twin sister called The Descendants Project. Their organization is dedicated to uplifting and protecting the descendants of enslaved people in Louisiana river parishes. Jo and Jasmine discuss Juneteenth, plantations, the legacy of slavery and how Black lives are still being disregarded in the present day. Finally, Amanda, Jasmine and Rachel raise a glass to community events, living in the moment, and a really meaningful interaction with a constituent in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”If you're ready to join the Great Troublemaker Turnout, please sign up here! Featured guest: Rob Niedermeyer, innovation teacher, Reynoldsburg City Schools This is Mr. Niedermeyer's eleventh year teaching. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology from The Ohio State University and a Master of Science in Education from Ashland University. Niedermeyer developed the STEM Middle at Baldwin Road Junior High Sustainable Outdoor Innovation Learning (SOIL) Lab. The SOIL Lab was the district's first middle level, science-based elective course that focuses on sustainability, urban agriculture, and eliminating food insecurity. Niedermeyer is now launching a new engineering and design class at Reynoldsburg's Hannah Ashton Middle School (HAMS) Innovation Lab makerspace. In the Innovation Lab, he pushes students to become producers, not just consumers. Students use the tools on hand to develop solutions to real problems within their own community. Niedermeyer believes that real problems are more important to learning than isolated content standards, and works with his team to develop authentic learning experiences for students through a transdisciplinary problem based learning (TPBL) model. Because of his commitment to authentic learning experiences for his students, Niedermeyer was named the Columbus Parent and ThisWeek News' 2019 Middle Level Teacher of the Year Award winner, 2020 State Board District 9 Teacher of the Year, and 2020 Ohio Teacher of the Year State Finalist. Check it out: Click here to see photos of Niedermeyer's Innovation Lab makerspace at Hannah Ashton and Soil Lab at STEM Middle, as well as some of the projects his students have been working on.In this episode:"The biggest problem was, how are we going to take a class that was 90% hands-on with tools and other pieces of equipment and do that in a virtual world." 1:45 - Makerspace basics: Traditional shop class tools with a high-tech twist 2:20 - Designing for others and creating projects that liven up the school space 3:15 - Teaching life-long 'soft skills' 4:00 - Focusing on the design cycle with digital tools 4:45 - The 'Aha' moment in hands-on learning through remote and hybrid education models. 5:40 - "The kids who are working at home, I am then their hands here." 6:30 - Re-thinking best practices in light of the COVID curveballs for a hands-on class 7:25 - The successes and failures figuring out how to make virtual hands-on learning work 8:30 - The unexpected opportunities created by teaching in a pandemic: Communication and collaboration 9:30 - Creating the Urban Agriculture and Environmental Science Lab (aka the Soil Lab) at STEM Middle 10:45 - Letting students design the Soil Lab 11:45 - Teaching the problem solving and critical thinking with hands-on lessons in the Soil Lab 12:40 - The role of agriculture in Reynoldsburg students' lives 13:15 - Shaping students' world views through urban agriculture and growing food for those in need during the pandemic 14:30 - Awards and recognition: Building on the new connections to improve experiences for students 16:30 - Looking ahead to the future of the Innovation Lab at Hannah Ashton "I think I really focus on the 'soft skills' here - the critical thinking, the problem solving. It's great to know how to use a laser cutter, but I'm more interested in can they actually problem solve if they don't know what's happening. If they have a mistake in their design, if the machine isn't working correctly, how can they problem solve and use the resources they have to get the machine up and running again to actually make the physical product? Creating their physical product is great, they love seeing it; but for me, the best part is seeing them work through the process of actually getting to the end product."Connect with us: Email educationmatters@ohea.org with your feedback or ideas for future Education Matters topics Like OEA on Facebook Follow OEA on Twitter Follow OEA on Instagram Get the latest news and statements from OEA here Learn more about where OEA stands on the issues Keep up to date on the legislation affecting Ohio public schools and educators with OEA's Legislative Watch About us: The Ohio Education Association represents more than 120,000 teachers, faculty members and support professionals who work in Ohio's schools, colleges, and universities to help improve public education and the lives of Ohio's children.
