Whether you live in the heart of one of Ohio's big cities or in the rolling hills of Appalachia - or anywhere in between - what happens in the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus make a huge difference in your life and what happens in our public school classrooms every day. That's why it's so important to have pro-public education lawmakers in the General Assembly and to hear from them about the big issues on the horizon for our public schools. OEA members were able to hear from a bipartisan panel of state lawmakers in December, 2024, about education priorities heading into the final days of the 135th General Assembly and looking ahead at what's coming in the 136th General Assembly as it gets underway in 2025.SUBSCRIBE | Click here to subscribe to Public Education Matters on Apple Podcasts or click here to listen on Spotify so you don't miss a thing. Today, we change things up a bit. While we usually focus on the full Hoffman Process, today's episode illuminates our 2-day Hoffman Essentials program. Join Drew and Jessie, Tiffany, Katy, and Marta, for this in-depth reflection on their journey through the Hoffman Essentials program. They each have a moving story that brought them to the Essentials program and each came for different reasons. What you will hear from them is how this powerful virtual work brings profound gifts of healing we hadn't yet heard articulated in such beautiful ways. In the early days of the Pandemic, Hoffman faculty and staff got to work creating. We were clear that the work of transformation afforded by the Process must continue even as the world was shutting down. But, after over 5o years of the Process being done in person, could elements of the Process and the promise of transformation they hold, work in a virtual setting? Could people, strangers in real life, come together and, after two days, realize how much they have in common and lean on the essentials of the Hoffman Process and their commonality for personal inner growth? As you'll hear Drew say, the answer is a resounding, YES! Our guests speak to many of these. They mention the Quadrinity and how to access each of the four parts. They share how they've transformed conditioned ways of reacting and thinking. Self-compassion is a key piece to this weekend of learning and growing. Some speak of the healing they found in the specific places in their home where they did the course, or outside during the Self-forgiveness guided exercise they were given. You can hear self-kindness and self-acceptance in their stories. There is a clear sense of love for where they are in their healing journey and their lives. The Hoffman Essentials program Hoffman Essentials is a live, virtual 2-day Hoffman Essentials program where Hoffman teachers guide students through experiential activities, individual assignments, and engaging discussions to bring more understanding, love, and aliveness to your life. The experiences and learning from this program are designed to provide useful tools and practices you can carry with you for a lifetime. As Marta shares, the Essentials program is a "great way to ask for help." With a consistent 5-6 month waiting list to attend the week-long Process in the US, our Hoffman Essentials program supports those who cannot or don't want to wait to begin the work of change. We are grateful to our guests for sharing their stories of transformation through this program. February 23, 1946. Grandview Heights, Ohio. 24-year old Lola Celli leaves her parents' residence in order to walk to the bus stop, but she soon vanishes without a trace. An eyewitness later reports seeing a woman struggling with a man inside a moving vehicle before a red shoe is thrown out the window. Since Lola was wearing shoes like that when she went missing, it is suspected that she was the victim of an abduction. Ten years later, the Grandview Heights police chief announces that the case has been closed because Lola was found alive in another town, but he never produces any evidence to confirm this and it eventually comes out that he may have been mistaken. Did Lola Celli disappear voluntarily or was she the victim of foul play? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore an older missing persons case known as “The Red Shoe Mystery”. Looking Forward Our Way

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 21, 2022 58:36

We continue our look at small business owners in this episode, but with a twist. We talk about the value of our local chambers of commerce in supporting local businesses. These organizations can create not only successful entrepreneurs but also lend to successful communities with a thriving economy! https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-polakowski-b8252a35/ (David Polakowski) is the President/CEO of the Tri-Village Chamber Partnership. His background includes business ownership being a business owner, working in government in economic development, and in the nonprofit world. The https://chamberpartnership.org/ (Tri-Village Chamber Partnership (TVCP)) represents the https://marblecliff.org/ (Village of Marble Cliff), the https://www.grandviewheights.gov/ (City of Grandview Heights), and the https://upperarlingtonoh.gov/ (City of Upper Arlington, Ohio). These three suburban communities, located in the west/northwest area of Columbus, constitute a total population of around 40,000 residents. They are dynamic communities with great school systems, libraries, and active governments. Five years ago two chambers representing this area combined to form a new entity, and today the TCVP has over 400 members. David gives a better picture of what was going on and how this combined effort of the TVCP leads to greater economic progress in the area. The role of a business owner takes on so many different forms in today's economy. Individuals can open their own shop, buy a franchise, sign on to companies as independent workers, or become consultants. All of these options show potential, even in our new normal. We talk about the overall skills David sees as most important for business owners. We have gone through many changes in our economic landscape over the past two decades. We came back from 9-11, made it through a major recession, and now trying to conquer a pandemic. All of these had a major impact on businesses. David gives some insight into 2022 and how businesses should prepare. One major change over the past year or so was the quick but constant need to pivot to new circumstances in businesses. Technology played a huge role. Everyone learned Zoom. Restaurants had to change their products and services. Other employers had to deal with online ordering and delivery. And still, others still had to figure out how to market their business and stay relevant. How was the TVCP supporting local businesses during this time? The Tri-Village Chamber Partnership is a great opportunity to network with business leaders throughout Central Ohio, all are welcome! Watch the TVCP events page for details and registration on https://business.chamberpartnership.org/events (https://business.chamberpartnership.org/events) If you are outside of the Central Ohio area, here are some ideas on where to network: Check your nearest Chamber of Commerce (see links below to find local chambers) for their networking opportunities – you may not have to be a member to attend, although there could be a fee. Think about volunteering with a local organization of professionals. Here in Central Ohio we have 2 groups you may want to check: Columbus Gives Back https://columbusgivesback.org/ (https://columbusgivesback.org/) or BESA https://www.besa.org/ (https://www.besa.org/) Check local nonprofits that provide networking events. In Central Ohio you may want to check Networking Professionals of Columbus  https://www.networkingprofessionalsofcolumbus.com/ (https://www.networkingprofessionalsofcolumbus.com/)  Columbus Young Professionals Group https://www.cypclub.com/ (https://www.cypclub.com/) EVOLE Women's Networking https://www.evolvewomensnetwork.com/ (https://www.evolvewomensnetwork.com) Check online event groups like MeetUp http://www.meetup.com/ (www.meetup.com) Google is a great resource to find your local organizations! How does a company that started in another state, eventually decide to move to Columbus? How do you start networking, basically from scratch? Jamie talks about how SHE is doing it, and it starts with working with the TriVillage Chamber Partnership! PolyPay is a recognized woman-owned provider of merchant processing services based out of San Luis Obispo, California. The company opened its doors in 2013 and ever since then they have continued to grow their footprint throughout California and beyond to over 10 other states. Now Jamie Barlett, the founder of PolyPay, is moving back to Ohio, and I talk with her about why she chose Columbus. The merchant processing industry is rife with companies who put their monetary goals before the well being of their merchant. PolyPay will never do that. Jamie founded PolyPay to turn those previous negative images into positive ones. Her goal is to do the right thing, always with their merchant in mind. As they continue to grow their merchant base and their capabilities, Jamie ensures that will never change. YOUTH SPORTS ARE IN NEED OF REINVENTION Team sports are a dress rehearsal for life. In fact, there is no better tool to teach kids the skills necessary to succeed in life than sports. Yet, something has gone terribly wrong. Youth sports have been hijacked by adults, and kids are literally losing out. Learn more about our youth sports leagues and the i9 Sports difference. Our mission is to Help Kids Succeed in Life Through Sports.® When parents register their child under the age of 15 for a youth sports program, we think the program should fit their lifestyle, not the other way around. Parents should have the right to expect that their child will get quality instruction and be given an equal opportunity to develop their skills to the best of their ability… but in a format that doesn't require the child and family to put everything else in their lives second. Families seeking a highly competitive format with a win-at-all-cost culture will not feel at home in our leagues. Our format is unabashedly recreational as we reclaim youth sports for the millions of kids across the nation who just want to play sports as they should be… fun. That's the i9 Sports difference. "Feed Like You Give A Damn" This is the motto of Fangs & Fur owners Danielle and Anthony Santilli. Fangs & Fur features a raw-food diet for your pet. That's what nature intended for dogs and cats, Santilli says. Over the past century, the introduction of dry food meant most pets are being given carbohydrate-rich, low-moisture diets, Santilli said. Most of the dry food is 45% to 75% carbs, and that's causing all kinds of bad results, like obesity in our pets, tooth decay and a lot of gut issues.Fangs & Fur offers fresh-frozen pet food, as well as meat-based dry food. “We understand a raw-pet-food diet is not for everyone, so we do offer some healthier dry-food options,” Santilli says, including brands that do not use any synthetic material. “But I think you should include at least some raw, high-moisture food, even if it's just treats, to accompany your pet's main food.” The store also carries raw goat's milk and bone broth to use as meal toppers and to add moisture and nutrients to pets that eat dry food. The store's “raw bar” offers freeze-dried treats, including duck heads, necks and hearts; pig snouts and ears; and turkey necks. As they state on their website... Fangs & Fur is a local, independent, and owner-operated shop that is committed to providing the dogs and cats in their hometown of Columbus, Ohio with the best possible foods, supplements, and gear available. They are continuously striving to learn more about our pets' health and nutrition and they only provide products that they have feverishly researched and trust. Around 10:20am on December 11th, 1987 two utility workers found the body of a young woman in a small field in Grandview Heights, Ohio. Her body was found near the intersection of Burrell Ave and Higgs Ave, she was wearing a bright red sweater, jeans, and tennis shoes. No identification was found on or around the body. Authorities were notified, and since there was no ID, the woman was labeled as a Jane Doe. The police turned to the public for help identifying the young woman, describing her as a white female, 5 foot 5 inches tall, 97 pounds, with shoulder length light brown hair and blue/gray eyes. The medical examiner determined she had died from strangulation and had likely been placed in the field early on the eleventh. A few days later, on Monday, December 14th, a young man contacted police stating that his ex-girlfriend hadn’t been in contact and that the Jane Doe could be her. He wasn’t allowed to see her because he wasn’t family, so he tentatively identified her through photographs. The authorities then asked the woman’s father to come down to the morgue and he confirmed that it was his daughter. The young woman was Margaret Durant. Part 2 of this episode:Margaret Durant was found raped and murdered in December of 1987; her case has been open and closed multiple times. The more I learn about this case, the angrier I get that it hasn’t been solved. Shirley Cooper, Margaret’s sister, joins me on this week’s episode. Shirley has become an advocate for her sister’s murder. She is trying to raise awareness and get justice for her sister who was taken from this earth too soon. Again, the more you hear about the case…the more upset you will become that this injustice has been unsolved for this long. The content below has been pulled from the Ohio Attorney General’s website: On Friday, December 11th, 1987, at approximately 10:15 A.M., 21-year old Margaret Durant's body was discovered in a vacant lot at Higgs and Burrell Avenues in Grandview Heights, Ohio. Ms. Durant was last seen on December 10th, 1987 at 11:30 P.M, leaving her place of employment at the Limited Distribution Center on Morris Road in Columbus, Ohio. Central Ohio is home to more than 50 breweries, the vast majority of which opened in the last six years. But there are a few that have been in the business for decades — Columbus Brewing, Barley's Brewing and Smokehouse Brewing, which is only a few years old under that brand, but once was part of Barley's. Elevator Brewing Co. is part of that class as well, marking 20 years of business in 2019. Founded by Dick Stevens, who still owns it to this day, it began as a brewery in Marysville supplying the downtown Columbus restaurant of the same name. The brewery relocated to 165 N. 4th St. in 2007 and eventually added a taproom once Ohio law changed to allow such spaces. For this week's News & Brews we opened the 380 IPA, a newer offering from old Columbus brand, and discuss the difficulties some older craft brewers may face as they try to keep up with the ever-expanding and evolving industry that is beer. In alcohol/food/restaurant news, the team discusses the closing of the Three-Legged Mare and why the Arena District has been a tough spot for some restaurants over the years. Over in Grandview Heights, Spagio has a new owner after 38 years of business. What's staying the same and what's changing? I ask if anyone remembers the Mr. Happy and Little Miss children's book series (it makes sense in context, I swear) and Editor-in-Chief Doug Buchanan returns from a few weeks abroad with craft brewing job leads for anyone willing to travel to Asia.

Wally Cash of Hilliard, Ohio: U.S. Navy, World War II

Wally Cash, 93, of Hilliard is among the ever-shrinking ranks of World War II veterans in the United States. Cash spent two years and 10 months in the U.S. Navy and concluded his active service before he was 21 years old. He was a 17-year-old senior at Grandview Heights High School when he enlisted in the Navy in August 1943. He later earned his high school diploma after his military discharge. “My parents encouraged me to (join the military), but when I brought home the papers for them to sign, they didn’t want to, (but) they reluctantly signed,” Cash said. Cash said he was motivated to enlist after hearing stories from some of his classmates who had graduated several years earlier, as well as from neighbors who had returned home after service. “(Grandview Heights was) a close community,” he said. After enlisting, Cash was sent to the Naval Station Great Lakes near Chicago. “The first thing they told us was to shave every day, and I thought, ‘Why do I need to shave? I wasn’t growing hair yet,’ ” said Cash, adding that he and other recruits also had to work around a Hollywood film shoot while they completed basic training. After eight weeks at the training station, Cash was sent to sonar school in San Diego. “I took tests (at the training center), and the Navy determined I was best suited for sonar school, he said. “You didn’t have a choice; you go.” Although Cash might have been well-suited for hunting submarines, he soon learned he was not so well-suited for the sea. “I got seasick,” he said. Cash spent five weeks in sonar school in November and December 1943. “We hunted a World War I submarine the Navy still had,” he said. Cash said he had learned how to recognize submarines from other underwater objects and how submarines were moving but missed too many maneuvers. “But I missed (some training) because I was seasick (and) was dropped,” Cash said. In lieu of tracking submarines, Cash was sent to a naval ship-repair station, also in San Diego, where he spent most of 1944. “Because I already had security clearance from my time in sonar school, I worked with electronics,” filling orders for parts and delivering them to ships that made the request, he said. In November 1944, Cash was assigned to the U.S. Naval Advance Base Personnel Depot in San Bruno, California, for a one-month stint. The Navy crafted the base from a former horse racetrack, he said. For the ensuing five months, Cash participated in combat training. “We drilled, (ran) an obstacle course (and learned to) strip a rifle,” Cash said. In December 1944, Cash was sent to a naval repair base on the island of Guam. By then, Allied forces had advanced west far enough across the Pacific Ocean to make it a challenge to get damaged ships to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii for repair. To that end, the Navy had sent through the Panama Canal the material to build a naval repair base on Guam. It was an arduous five-week journey from San Bruno to Guam (via Pearl Harbor), Cash recalled. It was a troop ship to Guam without air-conditioning, and the bunks were five decks below, he said. “So we would go up at night and sleep on the (top). ... It was a lot cooler up there than it was five decks below,” said Cash, adding that sometimes passing Marines on board would startle them with orders to put on life belts. While on Guam, when Cash wasn’t working at the naval repair base, he would work in the galley. But he also found time to explore the island and make friends, including, to some extent, Japanese prisoners of war. “It was frowned upon” to do so, but Cash said he still mingled with Japanese POWs. “They weren’t trying to run away,” he said. “They had three meals a day.” Cash said he had learned to speak a little Japanese, including how to count, for the purpose of bartering. “I would trade things with them and even buy a few things,” including drawings and artwork that Cash said he wished he had kept. He still has one drawing, he said. The POWs recognized him, Cash said, and even raised the eyebrows of guards when on his approach one day, the POWs bowed their heads and said to him, “Kon’nichiwa, changey boy.” Kon’nichiwa means “good afternoon.” “Changey boy” was the name the POWs gave him for trading and bartering, Cash said. Although he was stationed in a remote expanse of the South Pacific Ocean, a radio station on Guam kept Navy personnel up to date with news from the war, he said. In June, on what would become V-E Day (Victory in Europe), when the war in the European theater ended, Cash recalled the commissary officers ordered the cooks to prepare steaks for everyone who had worked in the galley. Cash was sent home in July 1946, a little earlier than he had expected. “I thought I was in until I was 21 (because I had enlisted as a minor), but someone realized that I should have (already) been discharged and I was sent home,” said Cash, who arrived back in the United States via San Francisco. Five weeks later, he was in Columbus via a train. But his time in the U.S. Navy wasn’t quite finished, he said. Cash subsequently served 44 years in the U.S. Navy Reserve, achieving the rank of master chief petty officer, the highest possible rank among enlisted personnel. His decorations include the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. As a civilian, Cash and his wife, Barbara, a U.S. Navy Reserve veteran, operated the Hilliard Food Pantry for 20 years. Cash is a member of the Hilliard Kiwanis Club, American Legion Memorial Post 614 and the Hilliard United Methodist Church. This week on the City Voice Podcast: I hope this is the first of many conversations that explore, record and reveal interesting aspects of the lives of people. People that we stand next to in line at the grocery store or pass in traffic often have stories we will never know. This weeks conversation is with Bob Cosgrove. Bob is my neighbor. He also happens to be a former navigator on one of America's first nuclear submarines.  Bob is also an author. His recently published book Vincent Van Gogh: A Poisoned Life: A Novel is just out and available on Amazon.com. More than those things I wanted to hear his stories and get his perspective on what they neighborhood we live in (Historic Grandview Heights) was like almost a decade before I moved there. The blight, the drug houses, Howard Park, the neighbors.
