Louisville's Waterfront Botanical Garden is growing.Yeah, that's a pun — but it's also a true statement, considering the massive expansion project taking place there. This week Philip Koester, CEO at Waterfront Botanical Gardens, joins LBF's Access Louisville podcast to tells us about everything happening place there. Waterfront Botanical Gardens, 1435 Frankfort Avenue, is an urban botanical garden just east of Downtown Louisville, built on the site of a former landfill that was closed in the 1970s. The project opened to the public in October 2019.The first phase of a four-phase masterplan has been completed, representing the development of approximately five acres of the 23-acre site. Phase 2 will include the addition of the Bonsai House and Display Gardens, an approximately $8 million project. The garden already has about 50 trees in its collection. "Over the next several years we plan to have a total of 150 bonsai trees," Koester says on the show. One of the trees — found at the top of a mountain in Wyoming — is estimated to be 1,100 years old."That tree is gonna be the centerpiece of the fifth outdoor room [in the bonsai house exhibit]," he said. The five rooms will each hone in on one of the elements of Japanese Buddisst philosophy— fire, water, wind, earth and void (space)."It's going to be a huge selling point, a huge curiosity," he said. You can hear more from Koester in the interview, which is available in the player above. Waterfront Botanical Gardens had 2024 revenue of $7.4 million, up from $5 million the year prior, according to federal tax filings. It had net assets approaching $25 million. It welcomed 64,000 visitors last year.Waterfront Botanical Gardens is free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of $10.Access Louisville, sponsored by Baird, is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. Join us live: Our next live podcast, "Access Louisville: The State of Dining Out," is set for 4 p.m. April 21 at 500 West Jefferson. We chat about it on this week's Access Louisville podcast.Louisville-based spirits giant Brown-Forman and Paris-based Pernod Ricard have confirmed they're in discussions about a potential merger. LBF Bourbon reporter Stephen P. Schmidt is on this week's show to talk about the size of the company this would create and how it would stack up in the industry. Brown-Forman (BF.A, BF.B) is Greater Louisville's fifth-largest public company, with most recent annual revenue of $3.98 billion. It's key brands include Jack Daniel's, Woodford Reserve and Old Forester. Meanwhile, Pernod Ricard, which had net sales of €10 959 million in fiscal 2025 (roughly $12.6 billion) has more than 200 brands, including Absolut Vodka, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Chivas Regal and The Glenlivet just to name a few.We also talk about the philanthropic and sponsorship impact that Brown-Forman has around Louisville. With news of the potential redevelopment of the Humana Building and surrounding property, we've all been wondering what would happen to this venerable Louisville restaurant that's on the site. Reporter Michael L. Jones, who interviewed the brothers behind the restaurant, explains that a lot is still up in the air. Brothers Agostino and Vincenzo Gabriele opened the authentic Northern Italian restaurant in May 1986 after David Jones Sr., then chairman of Humana, invited Vincenzo to take over the former Columns location in the Humana Conference Center at 150 S. Fifth St. in Downtown Louisville. But they're now celebrating the restaurant's 40th anniversary at a time when the future of the Humana Building is in flux. LBF previously reported that Louisville-based Poe Cos. has signed a letter of intent to purchase the 26-story Humana Building at 500 W. Main St. and convert it into a 1,000-room hotel. Later in the show this week, we chat about the closing of Sharetea, a family-owned business in Middletown. We'll talk about issues facing the industry, including food costs, changing neighborhood dynamics and more. Tickets are available here.Hollywood is shining a spotlight on Louisville with HBO's true crime documentary "Murder in Glitterball City."The doc, which released a few weeks ago, was based on the book "A Dark Room in Glitterball City" by local author David Dominé. And he joins us on this week's show. Dominé is also the owner of Louisville Historic Tours, which gives architectural and ghost tours in the city. We give our impressions on the 2-part series, which — in spite of the heinous crime at the center of it — somehow manages to paint Louisville in a charming light. That was core to the book as Dominé explains, as he wanted the Old Louisville neighborhood to feature like a character in the book.As Dominé notes on the show, the book and the documentary are two different things. But he was very happy with HBO's take on it. It's not everyday an author gets his work translated to the screen in such a way. "Just a fact that it attracted attention and made it to the screen was very gratifying," he said. Six permits were filed detailing the construction of five apartment buildings and one clubhouse building at the site. The Valor building looks like a castle, which of course gets us joking around about this actual castle being listed for sale in Charlestown, Indiana. We also talk about a new 61-home development near Downtown Jeffersonville, Indiana and plans for an AirBnB development in Downtown Louisville, called the Colt Club. After a break, we chat about restaurant news, including Papa John's plans to close 300 underperforming locations around the country. Organizations strive to stay true to their mission. The Watauga Land Trust was formed in 1995, established by Appalachian State University students concerned with protecting Howard Knob, a mountain adjacent to the Town of Boone. The new organization raised local awareness about the unprecedented pace of development not just around Boone, but across North Carolina's northwestern mountains. These concerns galvanized the local community and in 1997 the Watauga Land Trust changed its name to High Country Conservancy and expanded its jurisdiction to include Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties. The organization's mission was “to protect the natural resources of Appalachia by conserving land with significant ecological, cultural, recreational, or scenic value in the North Carolina High Country.”In May of 2010, Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust based in West Jefferson, North Carolina and High Country Conservancy, based in Boone merged to create Blue Ridge Conservancy, a private, non-profit organization that has protected over 22,000 acres in Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey Counties. In early October 2025, Blue Ridge Conservancy announced after 30 years of effort, it has secured the opportunity to purchase 73 acres on the north and east side of Howard Knob. This property adjoins the existing 5-acre park owned by Watauga County, and will protect the land forever and provide public access for nature-based recreation, including hiking and rock climbing. On this week's Mind Your Business, we speak with Eric Hiegl, BRC's Senior Director of Land Protection and Conservation Planning. We'll hear about how the organization's persistence saw them achieve their founding objective. We'll also discuss BRC's plans to enhance public access to this property in a manner that enhances outdoor recreation opportunities in storied area of Watauga County.Mind Your Business is written and produced weekly by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce. In this pilot episode of Best Part of the Book, a personal nod is given to the small rural town of Ashe County where McFarland has called home since it was founded in 1979. Host Mark Perzel talks with Janet Pittard, author of A Hospital for Ashe County: Four Generations of Appalachian Community Health Care. Janet shares favorite stories she uncovered in the extensive research and over 100 interviews she performed in the writing of the book. You don’t have to be from Ashe County, North Carolina to appreciate these hometown stories surrounding a small hospital in a rural Appalachian community. BOOK DESCRIPTION: When Ashe County Memorial Hospital opened in November 1941, it was the realization of a dream for the poor, sparsely populated county in the mountains of northwestern North Carolina. Building a hospital is a major undertaking for any community at any time. Accomplishing this in the waning days of the Great Depression and on the brink of World War II, while scant local resources were taxed by catastrophic floods and severe snows, was a remarkable feat of community organization. This is the story of the generations of supporters, doctors, nurses, emergency personnel and others whose lives are interwoven with regional health care and the planning, building and operation of (the “new”) Ashe Memorial Hospital. This legacy, brought to life through 114 photographs and personal interviews with 97 individuals, traces the development of health care in a remote Appalachian community, from the days of folk remedies and midwives, to horseback doctors and early infirmaries, to the technological advances and outreach efforts of today’s Ashe Memorial Hospital. Her love of stories came from her father, who entertained his little girl with stories he thought up while driving the state’s winding mountain roads for his job. That is where Janet’s love of western North Carolina originated. Now she combines her love of writing with her love of her mountain home in West Jefferson, generating stories and books set in the High Country. Janet began her career as a freelance writer after retiring from the North Carolina Governor’s Office with 30 years of service. She wrote over 100 stories for Our State Magazine from 2003 to 2009 and also wrote for several projects with UNC-TV’s Our State program. Later she contributed stories to two published anthologies related to Ashe County and wrote for an online newspaper called Ashe County Line. Janet is a regular participant in Wordkeepers, a local writing group. Positive connections between communities make a region like the High Country stronger. Partnership on one project can lead to future dialogue about other collaborative opportunities. The more we work to connect our local towns, counties, and their governmental entities, the better the chance for businesses and individuals to find similar ways to work with one another. The Blue Ridge Conservancy works each day to protect and preserve the places we love throughout the High Country. Unique projects like the Middle Fork Greenway, which will connect Boone and Blowing Rock with 6.5 miles of greenway trail along the middle fork of the New River, bring a physical connection to two towns that already work with one another on a variety of projects. The physical linkage between the two will only enhance the case for future partnerships between Watauga County's two largest municipalities. On this week's Mind Your Business, we learn more about a similar project, the Northern Peaks State Trail, that will one day connect Downtown Boone to Downtown West Jefferson. This project includes the permanent protection of an important High Country viewshed and will foster more access points to public lands that include several of the area's most scenic settings. Jordan Sellers, Northern Peaks State Trail for Blue Ridge Conservancy, tells us how the project came together, how environmental stewardship plays into the trail's development, and how the trail will positively impact the towns of Boone and West Jefferson. Mind Your Business is produced weekly by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce and is made possible through the sponsorship support of Appalachian Commercial Real Estate.Support the show

Counting up all of my musical endeavors, I have written, recorded, produced, and released two full-length albums,  two EPs, and 19 singles. The most recent being the “A Brief Cosmic Cinematic Experience” EP, where I wrote each song, played all the instruments, recorded and produced the whole thing; all from my one bedroom apartment's living room. I've played shows all over the state, from Ashe County to Raleigh to Charlotte, fronted my own band and have even been signed by two small labels during this wild ride! Under the heavy influence of the masters such as The Beatles, Elvis , and many more modern artists like–fellow North Carolinian musicians–The Avett Brothers, I have crafted a new but uniquely nostalgic sound, that blends together my surroundings and experiences. My hope is that my music will resonate with people, that when someone listens to one of my little songs that I've recorded in my living room, huddled over my guitar and computer, that they feel something, or think about things that maybe they wouldn't have ordinarily considered. So if you're feeling like your ears need a good wiggle and your toes need a good tap, look me up, wherever you get your tunes, and maybe you'll find what you've been itching for.     An Original band out of Raleigh, NC, WhoIAre's style is a blend of Psychedelic, Funk, Soul and Rock. Their latest release, “Paradox”, was mixed and mastered by Dwarf Star Studios (Carrboro)
