Imagine your daughter as a rising star for years in the Army is suddenly demoted fromE6 to E1 after reporting a toxic work environment and sexual assault? Now imagine that same daughter passing away just six weeks later after being denied a medical board and receiving an other-than-honorable discharge, out of money, facing failing health, and leaving behind two children. Join me this Wednesday as we talk to Felicia Cavanagh, the Mother of Allison, and my dear friend Sandy Duchac, from the non-profit Veteran Sisters, an advocacy group assisting with her case. Felicia Cavanagh is a USAF Veteran and mother of Sgt. 1st Class Allison Bailey. Since the passing of Allison in March 2023, Felicia has devoted herself to the pursuit of justice and accountability for her daughter. Felicia has been in multiple news articles and featured in the KTNV “Guarding the Guardsmen” series where she tells Allison's story of retaliation which ultimately led to her death.Felicia has researched Allison's military records; her medical and medical board request, as well as her legal file which, according to Felicia, violates numerous Constitutional rights along with a myriad of other legal concerns. Due to the severe nature of Allison's mistreatment, Felicia requested Nevada Senators Rosen and Cortez-Masto initiate an outside investigation. Felicia was granted this request and currently, a DoD IG investigation is taking place, looking into Allison's sexual assault and discharge.Felicia is also working to change NRS 412.2879 for all Nevada soldiers to grant the right to request and receive a Court Martial if charged with a serious offense. Felicia has earned the support of a State Senator on this endeavor.Ultimately, it is Felicia's goal to have this change made for all military members in every state and the nation. Felicia is also pursuing reform of the medical board system. Allison was deemed both mentally and physically not fit for duty, but yet denied her request for a medical board. This decision removed her required care and benefits at discharge, leaving her to die just six weeks later without any disability benefits. Before the loss of her daughter, Felicia was a retired Operations Manager. Felicia began her career in Logistics when she joined the USAF in 1987. Felicia managed facilities for UPS, Henry Schein, and Cardinal Health, supervising upwards of 150 employees, and managing inventory of up to one billion.Felicia is a graduate of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Technical Management and Accounting.Visit my website: https://thehello.llc/THERESACARPENTERRead my writings on my blog: https://www.theresatapestries.com/Listen to other episodes on my podcast: https://storiesofservice.buzzsprout.com

Desiree Batiste is a newly emerging published poet and author. She has been writing poetry since she was 9 years old, when she was first published in a small locally distributed newspaper for children. She had one of her poems published in Poetry.com's "Best Poems and Poets of 2003" compilation. Her goal is to become a full-time author, focusing on the genres of poetry, psychological thriller fiction and the finalization of her autobiography. She also hopes to take a story she wrote when she was a child, and refine it into a children's book that they would be delighted to read. She was inspired to start writing poetry regularly just before a dark time in her life, and continued to write and create poems throughout that time and forward through the last 27 years. She has survived child abuse, a suicide attempt, multiple domestic violence relationships and the passing of her father...and walked away from all of it stronger. She was told by many professors in college that she was destined to be a writer and had the gift of the written word. She graduated summa cum laude with her Bachelors of Science in Technical Management with Criminal Justice specialization in October of 2020. Desiree is a life-long native of Arizona, and currently lives in Buckeye. She lives with her husband, Michael, her daughter Kaylee and their 3 cats. She enjoys writing, and uses it as her primary form of emotional expression. Poetry should be as much of a stress reliever for the reader as it is a stress release for the writer. Desiree also enjoys singing, dancing, playing the drums, keyboard and guitar. Her one hope as she builds her writing career is that she can achieve a true human connection with her readers that profoundly affects them in a positive way. Desiree feels that to uplift, inspire, enlighten and entertain are some of the best things which authors are privileged enough to share with the world.

On this week's episode of the Architecture Social Podcast, my guest is the fantastic Stephen Glands who is Director of the Architecture Team at the recruitment consultancy Macdonald & Company.Stephen and I both worked together for over three years, the perception of a recruitment consultant is not always glowing - however, I admired Stephen Glands' candid and helpful approach to finding the right position for people mid-career onwards. In our conversation, Stephen shares valuable insight into the traits and techniques he has seen successful people use that have gone onto successful careers as well as what it takes to rise above adversity.Stephen Glands's Biography"Hello! I've been recruiting in the design and development space since 2000. Does that make me 'old and wise' in recruitment terms? You decide!I'd hope that at the very least it means I know what I am talking about. I am fortunate enough to receive lots of referrals and recommendations from both hiring clients and the people I am assisting to find a new job, so I'll take that as reassurance that I am doing something right!I have two main streams that I operate in. The first is senior and executive appointments for people from design backgrounds. Anything from Associate up to Partner or Managing Director. The second stream is jobs for people who want to work outside of mainstream design, usually with a developer, main contractor, investor or property consultancy. These roles tend to be Design Management, Technical Management or Head of Design roles.I seek input and information from others in order that I may advise them correctly. I don't dress things up to be anything they are not so you'll always get an honest and useful response from me. I take pride in having an informed perspective on the market so I am able to advise people on the best route to take. After all these years in recruitment, I still love my work! I enjoy putting people in positions where they can have a positive impact on our built environment. I particularly like working on strategic hires.Outside of work I like mountain biking, playing badminton, scuba diving, travelling to interesting places and eating out. All of which has come to a distinct halt whist I focus on bringing up two boys!"

This week we are staying with metrics and Manning Publications for a chat with Christopher W H Davis, author of Agile Metrics in Action, How to Measure and Improve Team Performance. Why more metrics?  Well first, the M in SPaMCAST is for metrics. Secondly, metrics are important tools for teams and organizations when used wisely. Many in the agile world hear the term metric or measure and run screaming from the room. I asked Chris if he thought combining 'metics' and 'agile' was an oxymoron - he thinks not.  After you have listened, buy a copy of Chris’s book using the link http://mng.bz/r2Og Don’t pay full price by using the discount code podspam20 to get a 40% discount code (good for all Manning products in all formats). Chris’s Bio: Christopher Davis has been working as an engineer, manager, author, and consultant focused on innovation since the 20th century. Since coming to Microsoft 4 years ago Chris has been focused on retail innovation with Fortune 500 companies. Prior to that he worked at Nike where he designed the platform behind the Nike+ Fuelband and running apps, helped redesign their ecommerce system, and led their initial push to go cloud native, while writing the influential book on measuring software development teams, Agile Metrics in Action. Currently finishing his Ph.D. in Technical Management designing state of the art working models for human-AI collaboration, Chris also enjoys playing classical guitar and building robots with his kids. Re-Read Saturday News  This week the re-read of  Great Big Agile, An OS for Agile Leaders by Jeff Dalton dives into chapter 2. Chapter 2 begins Part 2 which is focused on the six Performance Circles.  Leading is first.  Jeff points out that this is the most important of the circles because an organization without strong leadership will not allow teams to self-organize.  Remember, buy a copy and read along.  This week’s installment  Week 3: Performance Circle: Leading - https://bit.ly/2K3poWy  Previous installments: Week 1: Re-read Logistics and Front Matters - https://bit.ly/3mgz9P6  Week 2: The API Is Broken - https://bit.ly/2JGpe7l Next SPaMCAST The next Software Process and Measurement Cast will feature a reprise of a panel interview originally recorded in March and aired on SPaMCAST 597  just as the pandemic was re-writing the landscape of the workplace.  Paul Laberge, Susan Parente, Jo Ann Sweeney, John Voris, and I reconvene to reflect on an interesting year and the challenges of today’s workplace.
