International Comics Expo (ICE) 2015, The Geek Syndicate 'Is It Time For Dredd To Take The Long Walk?' Panel (5th Sept 2015) On Saturday 5th September, AEISD attended the International Comics Expo in Birmingham, UK, and was intrigued by the title of a panel that was scheduled: I was planning on moving on but the next panels title intrigued me: 'Is It Time For Dredd To Take The Long Walk'? Really? That's what The Geek Syndicate (Barry 'Nuge' Nugent and David 'Monts' Monteith) had the balls to ask? In Birmingham, one of the biggest selling demographics of 2000AD in the UK?? Many people, when faced down with the hungry, rapacious fan base of a character that many assume belongs in the annals of comics history, are gobsmacked by how many will come out of the woodwork when it comes to Dredd - Nuge and Monts certainly gave it the 'rabbit in the headlights' when they glanced and were struck that they were now talking to a full room, standing room only, all of whom were adamantly against the idea of their anti-hero disappearing any time soon. Thankfully, Judge Dredd creators themselves, John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, with writer Robbie Morrison and current artist Greg Staples, all voiced the opinion that the Judge, Jury And Executioner - whilst being published today in an age which most resembles the Mega City One of Dredd's 1970's storylines - still had a relevant place in the world. Enjoy!
This week, Under the Comic Covers discuss the latest issue of Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson's always creepy and entertaining Nailbiter and John Layman and Rob Guillory's tragically delicious final issue of Chew's Chicken Tenders arc. Along the way we cover some strange and often tangential topics. In our news segment there are name changes and assault charges, we take a brief look into Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's Just the Tips, a sexual manual for those so inclined (those being fictional people with more than a few mental issues), a patriotic tribute to one of the comic worlds greatest fallen hero, and in our Top of the Stack segment we (meaning Mr. Blahg) talk at great length about the entire Planet of the Apes franchise as Grace picks Michael Moreci and Dan McDade's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comic from BOOM Comics, and Mr. Blahg makes a very sober selection with Robbie Morrison and Charlie Adlard's White Death from Image Comics. And of course... as always... we answer your emails and blather on for ages about a whole lot of nothing... but dag nabbit, we do hope you find it to be entertaining.
